• Mac Book Refuses to Boot

  I have a Macbook that has unfortunately died on me. I randomly got a pop up message that said I needed to restart my computer, and once I did, I was greeted with the blinking folder question mark start up screen. I've tried everything, including running Disk Utility repair and reformatting the hard drive and reinstalling OS X. All of my data is backed up and safe, I just need my computer to start again. Before I go off and buy a new hard drive, I wanted to see if there is anything I might have forgotten.

• Tell me what&rsquo;s wrong! &ndash; An XNA sample demonstrating exception handling and reporting in

  I’ve always enjoyed using Nick Gravelyn’s exception handling in all of my games. You’re always going to encounter those unhandled exception that your players are going to ferret out and having a method to display them rather than just crashing to the dashboard is definitely more of an elegant solution. But the other day I got to thinking…what if we could do more? What if instead of just displaying the error, we could encourage the players to send us the error. So I started playing with that an expanding upon Nick’s sample code to see what I could come up with. I got close to what I envisioned, but unfortunately there were some limitations to just what the XNA API could do. In my head I was picturing the players hitting “Send Message” and a 360 message would just be sent to the XBLIG developer. Unfortunately, you can only send messages in an XNA game to someone you’re currently in a network session with. Since I didn’t want to have a 360 server running all the time, virally connecting to players just to get error messages, I did the next best thing and just open up a 360 message and encourage them to manually enter the gamertag. Maybe someday we’ll be able to do that a little better, but this works for now. In the sample, players can hit the “A” button or key to generate in an exception. If the debugger is not attached, then the Exception message screen will be shown explaining what has happened and giving the player a chance to send a 360 message to the gamertag provided or maybe even just send an email. Nick’s code has been changed just a bit. It now accepts any PlayerIndex (no longer hard coded to just PlayerIndex.One) and it no longer uses a MessageBox to get the users selection. The code has also been modified so that it works both for the 360 and for the PC. Check out “Tell me what’s wrong!” and let me know if you have any thoughts or suggestions. • How to zero out a drive?

  I'm currently running Ubuntu 12.04 and want to completely format my laptop so I can install Windows 7 (replace Ubuntu). When I put in my bootable USB with the OS it just shows a black screen with a white blinking cursor on the top left corner. I wait for hours (to be specific 5 whole hours) waiting for something to happen but I get nothing, so I pull out the USB and my Ubuntu 12.04 loads up. Repeated this several times with putting different boot priority options on top-est that relate to USB but the results are same. I go and visit some sites on the net like this http://www.techspot.com/community/topics/cant-replace-ubuntu-with-windows.175716/ that say I have to zero out my hard drive. My question is how? Note: Erasing out all my data is no problem cause I have nothing important to backup. If I have to lose my primary OS (Ubuntu 12.04) in the process I am ready to as my aim is just to install Windows 7 successfully. Please don't answer that there is something wrong with my USB or my USB reader/port/hardware or the content inside the USB cause they all works fine on my brothers PC as it boots up flawlessly.

• QR Codes for Files on Google Code

  Hi, When you download files from Google Code now (example), in addition to the text version of the SHA1 hash, it includes a QR code of it. The device that the file was downloaded to is the one that has to hash the file. But, if it can download the file (ie, has access to the webpage), it also has access to the text version of the hash, so the QR code seems completely useless—and more work to decode when the raw text is available. How would reading the hash into a mobile phone allow you to verify the file you download to the computer? Or if you download the file to the phone, how would you use the phone to take a picture of the QR code displayed on the webpage on its own screen? Does anyone know what the point to the QR code is or how you would use it to verify the downloaded file (I don’t mean QR codes in general, but specifically in this context).

• BlitzMax - generating 2D neon glowing line effect to png file

  Originally asked on StackOverflow, but it became tumbleweed. I'm looking to create a glowing line effect in BlitzMax, something like a Star Wars lightsaber or laserbeam. Doesn't have to be realtime, but just to TImage objects and then maybe saved to PNG for later use in animation. I'm happy to use 3D features, but it will be for use in a 2D game. Since it will be on black/space background, my strategy is to draw a series of white blurred lines with color and high transparency, then eventually central lines less blurred and more white. What I want to draw is actually bezier curved lines. Drawing curved lines is easy enough, but I can't use the technique above to create a good laser/neon effect because it comes out looking very segmented. So, I think it may be better to use a blur effect/shader on what does render well, which is a 1-pixel bezier curve. The problems I've been having are: Applying a shader to just a certain area of the screen where lines are drawn. If there's a way to do draw lines to a texture and then blur that texture and save the png, that would be great to hear about. There's got to be a way to do this, but I just haven't gotten the right elements working together yet. Any help from someone familiar with this stuff would be greatly appreciated. Using just 2D calls could be advantageous, simpler to understand and re-use. It would be very nice to know how to save a PNG that preserves the transparency/alpha stuff. p.s. I've reviewed this post (and many many others on the Blitz site), have samples working, and even developed my own 5x5 frag shaders. But, it's 3D and a scene-wide thing that doesn't seem to convert to 2D or just a certain area very well. I'd rather understand how to apply shading to a 2D scene, especially using the specifics of BlitzMax.

• Keyboard doesn't load in windows xp after Alureon infection

  AVAST detected alureon in a number of system files including atapi.sys and kbdclass.sys iple I quarantined those files, and restarted my machine. After restarting, my keyboard and cdrom did not work (I assumed those drivers would be automatically replaced, but was apparently wrong.) I went into device manager, and checked for hardware changes, it fixed the cdrom (which works now) and looked as though it fixed the keyboard as well. It did not. After multiple reboots the keyboard is still not recognized. It works up until the XP login screen loads, after which it is completely unresponsive. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks :)

  Im thinking of replacing my HP Pavilion dv5-1004nr with Acer Aspire AS5738-6444, I'm a CS student... so im torn between screen size (liking the 15in and decent gpu.. but it weight nearly 8 pounds and battery can barely last 2 hours in power saver mode) and wanting something portable to carry to classes/take notes ect (3 pounds and up to 8 hour battery life of the acer) what would you guys suggest? acer any good? i love my hp keyboard.. (or have links to other good laptops, im aiming for 600$ range?)

• Is it possible to interrupt or cancel the trash-delete process?

  I am connected to the company server, onsite not remote, which is Windows based. When, in the OS finder, I go to delete a file or directory that resides on the window-based server, the trash progress panel appears as usual. Not infrequently it will just hang there appearing to be active but no progress occurs on the progress bar. So the X is chosen to stop or cancel the process. A new panel appears, and while appearing to be active, again, just hangs there indefinitely. My lack of reputation prevents posting a screen shot - sorry. The question then is this: Is there a way via the Activity Monitor, Terminal, etc. to interrupt this deleting process in the Mac OS? Currently, I have to force shutdown and reboot to eradicate the ever-deleting panel. Finder relaunch does not solve and only eliminates the finder until I force reboot. Any assistance is appreciated. • AT&T DSL 2701HG-B Modem, port forwarding to RealVNC

  Our old cable modem could easily be set up to forward an "incoming port request" to the RealVNC software. Allowing us to log into our home computer from any location. We don't see any such configuration possiblity with our new AT&T DSL 2Wire 2701HG-B modem. (And it appears to have 2 entirely different 'set up screens'. Why?) Where is the screen that allows "forward incoming request for a certain port", to a certain computer, and direct it towards RealVNC"?

• 1080p playback on external monitor

  My system (netbook) specs: 1.6 GHz dual core atom N2600 2 GB DDR3 RAM Integrated GMA3600 GPU Win 7 Professional 32 Bit Daum Pot Player V-1.5 The issue: I downloaded a 1.33 GB sized 1920 x 1080 HD documentary (file extension: mp4) and it plays without a hitch using pot player. However, when I connected an external display (an LED Full HD 24" monitor) using D-Sub, the video plays fine but the player controls become very unresponsive. For instance, it takes about 40 seconds to exit full screen while playing. I tried: Installed/updated all the latest monitor drivers Updated the VGA drivers for GMA3600 No other programs ran while the video played, with most unwanted services and background processes disabled/killed. CPU usage goes only up to 49% when the video plays Question: What may I do in order to improve the player response/video playback experience? Do I need to play with (or change) Pot Player's default video decoders, etc?

• How to turn off the unity launch bar in ubuntu 11.10

  I would like to use the unity option in ubuntu but without the unity sidebar. I've seen how I can select to use just gnome from the login screen but there are some things I like about the unity interface. E.g. From what I've seen I like the integrated application menu with the ubuntu menu up the top that unity option comes with. So I really just want to turn the launch bar off. • off-the-shelf HDD in Dell Optiplex 755 - Invalid Replacement - Press F1 when rebooting

  I recently put an SSD into my work Optiplex 755. Since then, every time the system boots or reboots, I get prompted to hit F1 to continue with a message like HDD replacement is not valid. The system works just fine. What I am gathering from Dell's website is that I left the original drive internally as a data drive. And apparently the Optiplex does not support 2 drives in the configuration we purchased originally and complains. Any suggestions on how to get rid of this message? some suggested the MEBx or whatever from Intel and to turn it off, but I did not succeed earlier. It's not a big deal 80% of the time, but I regularly work from home and occasionally need to fire a reboot and well, you don't get the BIOS screen remotely :) Regards, Eric.

• Chaotic behavior of a dead pixel on my iMac 24"

  Since I bought my iMac last year, I have a white pixel on the left of my screen. I'm ok with that, one pixel is not much and I know about dead pixels policies. My problem is about understanding this "dead" pixel. But this pixel has a strange behavior. At first, it seems to be always white, but it is actually working ok under certain conditions: the mouse pointer a contextual menu Dock icons a QuickLooks video played in fullscreen other spaces than "1" The "QuickLooks fullscreen video" and "other spaces" are the one that disturb me the most. In these modes, my pixel is working fine, so it must be a software problem since my pixel is working correctly in those modes. Any ideas?

• Project Corndog: Viva el caliente perro!

  During one of my last semesters in college we were required to take a class call Computer Graphics which tried (quite unsuccessfully) to teach us a combination of mathematics, OpenGL, and 3D rendering techniques.  The class itself was horrible, but one little gem of an idea came out of it.  See, the final project in the class was to team up and create some kind of demo or game using techniques we learned in class.  My friend Paul and I teamed up and developed a top down shooter that, given the stringent timeline, was much less of a game and much more of 3D objects floating around a screen. The idea itself however I found clever and unique and decided it was time to spend some time developing a proper version of our idea.  Project Corndog as it is tentatively named, pits you as a freshly fried corndog who broke free from the shackles of fair food slavery in a quest to escape the state fair you were born in.  Obviously it's quite a serious game with undertones of racial prejudice, immoral practices, and cheap food sold at high prices. The game itself is a top down shooter in the style of 1942 (NES).  As a delicious corndog you will have to fight through numerous enemies including hungry babies, carnies, and the corndog serial-killer himself the corndog eating champion!  Other more engaging and frighteningly realistic enemies await as the only thing between you and freedom. Project Corndog is being developed in Visual Studio 2008 with XNA Game Studio 3.1.  It is currently being hosted on Google code and will be made available as an open source engine in the coming months.

  Hello everyone: I am new to the KDE and I am working all the time in a Windows XP environment. So I installed the KDE's Konqueror browser onto my laptop. The only reason for that is to allow me issue man:ls in the browser address bar and to get the man page displayed into the browser rather than printed inside the terminal. The problem is, I then get the error prompt saying that: protocol not supported man I guess something is wrong in the configuration, how to fix this problem? Many thanks in advance. The problem is definitely not the Konqueror browser, but is between the keyboard and the screen...

  I'm trying to debug some issues with my Mac. This machine is used as continuous integration server. It stops responding from time to time. I think it could be some software issue, since the machine is working (so i.e. it's not a kernel panic) - that is when I go to the server room I see the login screen and I can move the mouse. Unfortunately I can't login neither directly nor by VNC or SSH. There is a nice tool that helps in debugging this type of problem called aTop. It's like top but with history. Unfortunately it's Linux-only software. Is there any tool that is similar to aTop for OSX?

  Hi there, I have a ESX3i, build 207095 and i'm having a problem connecting to my VM's using the vmware remote console. On my PC always gives me an error about vmare-remotemks. I can do all of the tasks using VI client, but when a try to open remote console it breaks, the only thing that apears on the black screen is "unknown MKS Event". I can't find a solution to my problem, and i really need to be able to start a remote console from my PC. On my laptop the error doesn't occurs, both machines are Windows 7 x64. Thanks, JGanhão

• Is it me or is developing web based data entry GUIs a big pain?

  Maybe it's me or maybe it isn't. I don't have a huge amount of experience of developing web based data entry software but do have some. I used to do it quite a bit years ago. Used to use Oracle Forms, Visual Studio, various 4th generation languages, and performing the user interface layout used to be a snap. Now doing the user interface for developing web applications seems to be a huge pain in the rear. Just trying to get text entry fields and widgets to go where they are supposed to go on the screen is a total pain. You have to know Javascript, CSS, JQuery, HTML, etc. There must be an easier way to develop data entry forms that produce the needed underlying code for a web page. Maybe I'm just not looking in the right place. There must be some WYSIWYG GUI development tools for the web for developing data entry forms out there. Anybody know of any?

A Data Connection Library in Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 is a library that can contain two kinds of data connections: an Office Data Connection (ODC) file or a Universal Data Connection (UDC) file. Microsoft InfoPath 2010 uses data connections that comply with the Universal Data Connection (UDC) file schema and typically have either a *.udcx or *.xml file name extension. Data sources described by these data connections are stored on the server and can be used in standard form templates and browser-enabled form templates. How to create a SharePoint Server Data Connection Library? 1. Browse to a SharePoint Server 2010 site on which you have at least Design permissions. If you are on the root site, create a new site before you continue with the next step. 2. On the Site Actions menu, click More Options. 3. On the Create page, click Library under Filter By, and then click Data Connection Library. 4. On the right side of the Create page, type a name for the library, and then click the Create button. 5. Copy the URL of the new data connection library. How to create a new data connection file in InfoPath? 1. Open InfoPath Designer 2010, click Blank Form, and then click Design Form. 2. On the Data tab, click Data Connections, and then click Add. 3. In the Data Connection Wizard, click Create a new connection to, click Receive data, and then click Next. 4. Click the kind of data source that you are connecting to, such as Database, Web service, or SharePoint library or list, and then click Next. 5. • Cannot boot from windows 7 DVD

  Hi All, I have just purchased windows 7 64bit. I entered the disk in the drive and it told me I couldn't upgrade as I am using XP so I have tried to boot from CD instead but it doesn't work. It seems to look at the disk for a few seconds and then ends up at a screen saying windows failed to start and then I hit enter and it loads windows XP again. Does anyone know what could cause this?
