  • Ubuntu 12.04 edit grub

    - by J. R. Crocker
I just install Ubuntu 12.04. I want to change the boot order of grub. Previous versions of grub.cfg I was able to change the permissions and the do a gedit. After reloading 12.04, I was able to change permissions for grub.cfg, but gedit will not let me save it. I am a little irritated that Ubuntu is suppose to be open source. However someone has chosen to lock one out of a file. I do realize that some people have no business doing a edit on grub. I am a long time user of Unix and Linix.

  • C++ game architecture

    - by rxc
I'm trying to make a game, but I'm not sure of the best way to set up the main loop and classes. For really small games, I could put everything in the main() loop, including event handling, collision checking, etc. However, for large games, that's seems like a highly inefficient way to get things done. The architecture I want is kind like the way the Minecraft coders did it (I quote Minecraft code because I've seen the source code when downloading MCP). They have objects entity classes EntityCow and EntityChicken and they have methods like onDeath(), onLivingUpdate(); and item classes like ItemSword have methods like onItemUse(). I've never seen these methods get called directly, but apparently, they get stored in a class called DataWatcher, which, I think "watches" all the data (as the name implies) and calls the appropriate methods in the objects. Is that how most games do it? If so, how is the DataWatcher class implemented? Any help or alternate suggestions is really appreciated.

  • New Development Snapshot

I finished all the .NET 4.0 security model changes. If you build from source, you can now (optionally) build on .NET 4.0 and get native .NET 4.0 assemblies that use the new .NET 4.0 security model (and also experimental class gc support). The .NET 2.0 binaries also work on .NET 4.0. This is probably the final development snapshot before the first 0.44 release candidate and it has been tested more than a typical development snapshot. Please start testing ...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? We already have over 80 articles in several categories including Silverlight. • locale: What is the LANGUAGE variable used for? (and when?)

    - by seya
I am trying to understand the locales used in Linux. On my Ubuntu 11.10 system locale puts out the following: LANG=en_DK.UTF-8 LANGUAGE=en_GB:en LC_CTYPE=en_GB.UTF-8 LC_NUMERIC="en_DK.UTF-8" LC_TIME="en_DK.UTF-8" LC_COLLATE=en_GB.UTF-8 LC_MONETARY="en_DK.UTF-8" LC_MESSAGES=en_GB.UTF-8 LC_PAPER="en_DK.UTF-8" LC_NAME="en_DK.UTF-8" LC_ADDRESS="en_DK.UTF-8" LC_TELEPHONE="en_DK.UTF-8" LC_MEASUREMENT="en_DK.UTF-8" LC_IDENTIFICATION="en_DK.UTF-8" LC_ALL= (en_dk is for using international day format, continental European number formatting (1.234,56) etc.) I think I understand what the LC_* family does, that LANG is the fallback if one of them is not set and that LC_ALL sets all of the LC_* variables to its value. What I don't know yet, is what LANGUAGE is used for. The notation en_GB:en reminds me of the Accept-Language HTTP header. With the settings above it would mean, British English is used, if a translation for it exists. Otherwise any existing English translation (en_US, en_AU, ..., whatever) would be used. Am I right so far? Also what programs actually obey the LANGUAGE setting? In how far is it different from LC_MESSAGES? Unfortunately, man locale only documents the LC_* family. And searching the web for 'linux locale LANGUAGE' or similar is a mute point. (Of course language is a word often used when talking about locales, and it may also be shown just in the output of locale without being discussed). Does anybody of you can help me out there?

Possible Duplicate: I need an open source php social script, minus the social features I am looking for a web script in which users can register and create a simple profile page; something like a CV. When users log in they will be able to fill out a simple form with details like name, dob, etc. and it displays in a simple fashion on the profile page like domain.com/username Is there any simple script available for this maybe free or open sourced? An example is prairie identity server (openID). I need something similar but more customizable.

    - by user285982
I am using Ubuntu 10.10 64 bit, and I can browse the internet fine. I am typing this using the machine. When I attempt to use the Ubuntu Update Manager to update to 11.04, I get this error message: Failed to Fetch Fetching the upgrade failed. There may be a network problem. And when I try to change servers, here is what I get: Failed to fetch http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/maverick/main/source/Sources.gz 404 Not Found [IP: 91.189.91.15 80] It repeats with other lines, 404 not found. • Grouping GridView on Windows 8

    - by nmarun
It took me a few minutes to get the grouping working on the GridView on my Windows 8 app. I’m sharing what I did just so others can get it working sooner and go by the rest of their work. In VS 2012, I added a Grouped Items Page to my Windows 8 application project. By default, the template will add some sample data, so you can just run it to see how things look. Let’s see what it takes to show our custom data on the page. I’ll stat with the data source. 1: public class Team 2: { 3: public Team( string...(read more)

  • Print all values in a value object

    - by SKDev
I have to debug an issue which requires me to print all the values of a Value Object that is returned by a web service call. The Value object is a complex object in the sense, it has another object as its member which in turn has another object. Printing all the values by using get methods is cumbersome. So was wondering if there is a way to break down the value object by any way to get to a primitive level like String or int or Date and print them all using one API? I had a look at the below question but my prob is that i don't have access to the source code of the value object. The sources are in obfuscated jar. http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2413001/how-to-print-values-of-an-object-in-java

  • 20 1TB drives vs. 10 2TB drives in RAID5/6 server

    - by Hunter
Hi everyone, I will be setting up a server at work and I need some advice on some details. The setup will be one blade-type server (8-core, 16GB RAM) with two subsystems - one for the main storage the other to back it up. I'm shooting for a 20TB array (I know it'll be less after formatting and parity drives). So is there any advantage one way or the other with either 20 1TB drives or 10 2TB drives? I'm not sure right now how many controllers I should have either (in the quote I have is a dual-port controller). I would think two controllers for a server of this size would be a better choice than the dual-port controller (but I really don't know). And would an array of this size have any performance issues in RAID 5 or 6 (I know RAID 5 or 6 are "slower" because of all the parity calculations). Also, these will be either WD RE3 (1TB) or the RE4 (2TB). Oh, also, for the backup array would it be ok to use the WD 2TB green drives (also in RAID5 or 6)?

  • NUnit vs. MsTest: NUnit wins for Unit Testing.

People are still wondering what are the differences between the two most popular unit testing frameworks in the .NET world: the open source NUnit and the commercial MsTest). Heres a short list of what i remember instantly: Nunit contains a [TestCase] attribute that allows implementing parametrized tests. this does not exist in msTest MsTest's ExpectedException attribute has a bug where the expected message is never really asserted even if it's wrong - the test will pass. • Generating CMakeLists.txt

    - by vanna
I got a bunch of C++ sources files and headers. They may use external libraries such as Boost e.g. I am interested in the process of building binaries for Windows and *nix. Makefiles (*nix) and .vcproj (Windows) call compilers with some specifications such as the order of compilation, compilation options and stuff. CMakeLists.txt can be used by CMake to build either makefiles or .vcproj and use very helpful commands such as recursive search of files, automatic linkage with known libraries, installers, variables that can be used in source files... Is there any existing tool that would generate a CMakeLists.txt from specified options ? Options could be like : scan this folder and make a library out of it, then scan this other folder and make an executable and automatically link both with Boost as well along with a user friendly installer with generated INSTALL.txt and README.txt. Something very powerful like that.

  • I finished "Beginning Android Games", should I use its framework?

    - by orod
I've worked through Mario Zechner's "Beginning Android Games" and have made my own pong and asteroids game using the framework used in the book. I have also downloaded the source code for Replica Island and am able to run that. I like Replica Island's framework over the one I made from reading the book. Some differences are that Replica Island uses different activities for each screen instead of Zechner's Screen class and that Replica Island can use a lot of textures and isn't limited to textures with dimensions of powers of 2. If I'm serious about writing games and apps for Android should I learn Replica Island's framework and use that instead of the one I made while reading Zechner's book?

  • Can I exclude files from Rhythmbox library by filetype?

    - by user69245
I use Band-in-a-box ("BIAB") to create backing tracks to practice my guitar-playing, and keep the source files (filetype .MGU) created by BIAB in the same folder as the MP3 files derived from them. Because I share this folder with colleagues via Dropbox, I'm not in a position to move the .MGU files elsewhere. Every time I start Rhythmbox ("RB") it checks my music folders, and reports "Import Errors" on all the .MGU files. RB apparently ignores a number of unplayable filetypes in music folders - is there a way of adding .MGU to this group? I know I can just ignore the Import Errors, but one of these days there will be an error I would have wanted to know about.

  • JEditorPane Code Completion (Part 3)

    - by Geertjan
The final step is to put an object into the Lookup on key listening in each of the JEditorPanes, e.g., a "City" object for the CityEditorPane and a "Country" object for the CountryEditorPane. Then, within the CompletionProviders, only add items to the CompletionResultSet if the object of interest is in the Lookup. The result is that you can then have different code completions in different JEditorPanes, as shown below: I've also included the Tools | Options | Editor | Code Completion tab, so that the code completion can be customized. The full source code for the example is here: java.net/projects/nb-api-samples/sources/api-samples/show/versions/7.2/misc/CustomerApp

  • Make eix available version match emerge

    - by Ryaner
We have out Gentoo hosts using a binhost with EMERGE_DEFAULT_OPTS="--getbinpkgonly --usepkgonly" in the make.conf file so that the host only pulled down the binary hosts. All works well from that side. I use eix to check on software versions for upgrades but have hit a problem where eix will see an available version ahead of what is available on the binserver.
