• How do I usb tether my Cyanogen modded G1's internet connection to my Toshiba Tecra 8000 running Xub

  I have usb-tethering enabled in my phone. It works fine with Vista. When I plug my phone into my Tecra 8000 laptop running Xubuntu, dmesg shows: "usb 1-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 8". I see that the OS has detected it as a storage device, but I can't get it to function correctly as a network device. /dev/us* shows no usb0, but it does show /dev/usbdev1.1_ep00 /dev/usbdev1.1_ep81 /dev/usbdev1.8_ep00 ... usbdev1.8_ep83. I could just use the wireless tether app for android, but I can't get my Netgear wg511 v2 (made in China) wireless card to work in this laptop either. But that's another post for later.

• Windows 7 won't read from NAS on LAN

  I've got a Linkstation NAS drive on a local network. Having just got a new laptop with Windows 7 Home Professional, I can no longer read anything of the drive. I've tried accessing the drive using \192.168.1.55\share, using ftp programs such as WinSCP, filezilla and even using firefox to hit ftp://192.168.1.55. The really annoying thing is that through these methods I can see the files on the drive, counting out any kind of connection issues. I can navigate through the NAS file system, but as soon as I try and copy a file off the NAS, things just stop working. Accessing the drive through a Windows XP machine works fine. So far I've tried: Disabling firewalls Adding the LmCompatibilityLevel key to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa Using the 40 - 56 bit encryption instead of the 128 bit. Has anyone got any suggestions of what I can check or try? This is driving me crazy and I'm totally out of ideas?

• Unable to setup ssh tunnel on mac

  On my office windows XP laptop I use a program called Bitvise Tunnelier to establish ssh tunnel to a in-house MySQL database. In the Tunnelier program I also need to provide address of corporate http proxy server in order to establish tunnel. On my personal mac laptop, I use Cisco Anywhere client to establish a VPN connection to my corporate network. But i'm unable to establish ssh tunnel to mysql database using ssh. How do I specify the proxy server address in the ssh command? As additional info when i'm using office laptop (whether in home or office) I can successfully ping to the server address specified in the Tunnelier program. But i cannot ping the same server using my mac machine (even after connecting via VPN). So basically i'm unable to understand what's going on and what steps i can take to debug this problem .

• vmware server end of life, where to go now?

  We have some virtual machines on vmware server 2.x running on 64 bit hardware and quite happy with it. As vmware server will no longer be offered we are thinking to migrate to ESXi, which seems is free. We will have to install the specialized network cards but that's a minor problem. But once left alone with a quite silently discontinued product there is some resistance to vmware. VirtualBox seems to work: http://blogs.oracle.com/virtualization/2010/06/migrating_from_vmware_to_virtu.html What other free (of licencing cost) options are there? We have windows server 2003 32 bit VMs and also linux 32 and 64 bit VMs to migrate. So xen does not seem an option, which does not run microsoft OSes.

• CentOS running inside VMware as WebServer times out on outside connection

  I have a CentOS machine running inside VMware, and I have got PHP and Apache set up on it, so if I open a browser (on the VM) and go to either localhost, or 192.168.0.3, I get a phpinfo page I made in /var/www/html/index.php, but, if on the host (Windows 7), in my browser I go to 192.168.0.3, it times out. I can ping the IP address from Windows and get a response, I just can't through the browser. Does anyone have any ideas what I need to do to get this working? This is my first time using a VM and I'm getting lost in the network settings.

• VPN networking issue

  I have 2 servers hosted in the cloud. One an application server, one a VPN server, both running Win2008. Both have a local IP address assigned by DHCP in different network subnets, 10.227.55.0 (VPN) and 10.231.5.0 (App Server). These servers can ping each other. My VPN client connects in to the VPN server (using a L2TP connection on a Win7 client). It is assigned an IP Address from the VPN server's static pool (the VPN server takes 192.168.100.1, the client is given 192.168.100.2). The client can ping both the 192.168.100.1 address of the VPN server, and its 'local' IP address (10.227.55.X). What the client can't do is ping the App Server. How can I configure routing so that my client can access the App Server, without hard-coding any of the DHCP IP addresses anywhere? thanks Duncan

  I am setting up a small network and i am stuck at rerouting the Links folder on Windows 7. What i am trying to accomplish is to keep some particular directories stored on a server and all client computers will actually link to those folders, one of which is the Links folder. I took a look at the registry and found most of the things in : HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders But the Links folder isn't there so im wondering if it's possible to sync that folder over several PCs too without moving all the user directories to the server Any hint is appreciated!

Rsyslog has become the default on most linux distro. Requirements have changed (security, software configuration management, ...). I'd like to ask the following questions : How do you centralize, display and archive system logs? How would you like to do it now if you had to? Most linux distro use rsyslog nowadays, which can provide reliable log transport. But some older unices, network devices and maybe windows box still use old udp rfc-style transport. How did you manage to get reliable transport? Storing logs for a few months can represent a huge amount of disk space. How do you store them? rdbms? Compressed and encrypted text files?

• Router stopping my python server

  This was originally posted in stackoverflow.com but it was suggested I move it here after it was realized it wasn't my code that was wrong. So my problem, very simply, is that I cannot get my computers that are connected to my router to communicate. example: If I ping a wireless computer I get no responce and the Request times out If I ping a computer wired to the modem directly it works fine. • OpenVPN not with Windows 7 PCs on client Lan

  I have a setup with a router running OpenWRT with an openvpn client. Windows 7 pc's cannot access the vpn. They time out trying to access servers on the VPN. The mystery to me is that the setup works fine for my laptop running ubuntu. I can access the VPN without any issues. I previously had a router running Tomato with the same openvpn setup and all the computers could access the VPN. What could account for the difference in behaviour? Is there something I am missing in the OpenWRT setup that is required for windows networking that is on by default with tomato? To clarify the OpenVPN client is on the OpenWRT router. The client connects to the OpenVPN server. But when I try to access the VPN from Windows computers on my network I cannot.

  I'm trying to build a laptop system that can connect to just about any network you might come across in a large enterprise. I realize I can use a media converter to go from twisted pair to fiber but prefer to have a NIC instead of a converter. Is there a vendor out there that actually makes a gigabit ethernet fiber adapter for laptops? Edit: A year after I asked this question, apparently Allied Telesis came out with the AT-2872SX ExpressCard which has an SC connector for Gigabit Ethernet. See syneticon-dj's answer below.

  Why every change in Asus UX50v causes screen resolution get lost? Installing a new application, connecting to another wireless network, change some settings, ... causes this problem. For example after installing an application, UX50v needs to restart. And when it got restarted, resolution would be set to 640x480(or 600x800) and Hibernate and Sleep options are disappeared from shutdown menu! (I have other problems with this Asus UX50v crap too - like I can't update windows 7 because it crashes on Asus UX50v crap - but this one is absolutely ridiculous and stupid!)

I don't want the users to download files with bittorrent (mainly used) and other p2p apps. I've also found some solutions about lowering p2p traffic priority using QoS. • Windows 8 Pro Remote Desktop issue

  I have a weird issue here. I'm running Windows 8 Pro. The client computer is also running Windows 8 Pro. Remote Desktop works when I'm in the same network. I tried connecting using my external IP Address and my DynDNS account, neither works. I disabled Windows Firewall and setup DMZ for my computer on the router, still can't get remote desktop to work. I verified www.canyouseeme.org, port 3389 is open, which is obvious since I'm running DMZ! My ISP, Bell Canada (modem/router: Sagemcom F@st 2864), blocks port 80 and 25, but I don't need those for RDP, do I? The funny thing is RDP rejects the connection instantaneously for my IP or DynDNS while it takes a while for another address. Thank you, Michael

• Ubuntu Server 12.04 LTS on Hyper-V 2012

  I have the following scenario: Hyper-V 2012 server core installation. On top of this i created a virtual machine on which i tried installing Ubuntu Server 12.04 which should not have any compatibility issues according to what Microsoft and Ubuntu are saying (although it is not officially supported). I start, run the installation and everything is ok, no problems detecting the network device or the hard drive (unlike debian which didn't even detect the hard drive). Once the installation is complete it asks me to reboot, it unmounts the "dvd drive" and reboots. Once it tries to start again i get the following error: Boot failure. Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in the selected Boot device. It seems to not be booting up from the virtual hard drive. The hard drive is set up in SCSI mode, nothing mounted on the IDE controller (no iso image or anything else. Does anyone have any ideas on what i can do to solve this?

• Computer Science Degree or Computer Engineering Degree?

  Hello everyone, I'm 23 years old living in Italy and this year I will be getting my high school diploma. I'm interested in pursuing a collage degree and work in the IT field. At the moment I'm self teaching myself Java (I also know python, html, css and mysql). I'm also learning about algorithms and OO design. I'm curious how important a college degree is for me, considering my age and if there is a big difference between computer science and computer engineer. There is a computer science university where I currently live but not a computer engineer one. For some reason universities that offer computer engineering courses are only in bigger cities such as Milan, Bologna, Roma. Cost wise, it would be cheaper for me to study near home at a computer science school. Career wise, would a computer engineering university offer me more work opportunities instead of a computer science degree ? Is it easier transiting from CS to CEN or vice-versa? I'm not exactly sure what type of job I want to pursue in the future since I'm still a bit undecided but definitely not system/network administrator, database administrator, game developer.

DEVICE=eth0 BOOTPROTO=none # have also tried "static" here HWADDR=00:13:72:*:*:* ONBOOT=yes TYPE=Ethernet NETMASK=255.255.255.0 IPADDR=173.*.*.161 GATEWAY=10.1.10.1 /etc/resolv.cnf is also set with the appropriate name servers from our ISP. When I ifdown eth0 then ifup eth0 I get... SIOCADDRT: Network is unreachable When I switch to DCHP, the machine has an IP assigned and there are no connection problems. Any ideas?

  Just like the question states. Is it somehow possible to get the IP address of a network that you don't have access to? For example, if you click the little wifi button on your task bar, and highlight your cursor over one of the options, you get some info. But your external IP address is actually the address of the router, isn't it? Which would mean you would have to connect to the wifi, and then the router to get an IP address, correct? • SQL SERVER – Simple Installation of Master Data Services (MDS) and Sample Packages – Very Easy

  I twitted recently about: ‘Installing #sql Server 2008 R2 – Master Data Services. Painless.‘ After doing so, I got quite a few emails from other users as to why I thought it was painless. The reason was very simple- I was able to install it rather quickly on my laptop without any issues. There were a few requests along with these emails sent to me, which regards to how to install MDS, as well sample databases. Please note that I am the admin of my machine and I installed this MDS as the admin as well. Talk to your network administrator to figure out the best suitable settings for better security of login users. Additionally, since MDS is only supported on a 64-bit machine, I had rebuilt my computer a week before with a 64-bit OS and 64-bit SQL Server to go with it. Here is a quick picture tour of the installation. First of all, go to your SQL Server 2008. Install self-extracted folder and find the .msi file for C:\1033_enu_lp\x64\setup\masterdataservices.msi. Once you clicked on the file, follow the image tour below. You can ask me any questions in case you are still confused with any of the steps of the installation. While searching the internet for a similar installation process, I have landed on the official blog of MDS team where they have many interesting posts about it. If any concept written on my posts are contradictory to the information on the official blog, I suggest that you should follow the advice of official blog.   Hi, I recently signed up to a new hosted email provider. When I send mail (from OWA, OR Outlook) there is a delay of up to 3 minutes from when i send the message, to when it's received (in my gmail account for example) I've listed the headers below. Is there anything I can advise my new email host to do? My previous email host delivers within 5 seconds!!
