• how do you document your development process?

  My current state is a mixture of spreadsheets, wikis, documents, and dated folders for my input/configuration and output files and bzr version control for code. I am relatively new to programming that requires this level of documentation, and I would like to find a better, more coherent approach. update (for clarity): My inputs are data used to generate configuration files with parameter values and my outputs are analyses of model predictions. I would really like to have an approach that allows me to associate particular configuration(s) with particular outputs, so that I can ask questions of my documentation such as "what causes over/under estimates?" or "what causes error 'X'"?

• ATI proprietary driver performance?

  I'm about to (at least, want to..) buy a laptop with an ATI Radeon HD 4250, and I haven't a good opinion on ATI's drivers. How is the actual performance of the open/proprietary driver (currently I have nVidia, and I'm very satisfied)? The intended use for the laptop is: watching videos, programming in Java/PHP/maybe Qt... but, I like to know if Compiz runs well. Yes, I'm a hardcore (?) programmer that uses Compiz. :P Someone has this GPU? Experiences? Thoughts? Thanks! :D

So far I have only been through a few chapters but I have been favourably impressed. In the chapter on Exceptions, I have posted an errata regarding the custom exception in  listing 14-17; it is missing an overload required by FXCOP     private CustomException(SerializationInfo info, StreamingContext context) : base(info, context)     {     } Aside of this minor point, I have no hesitation to recommending this book to anyone who wishes to learn C#.

• Independence Day for Software Components &ndash; Loosening Coupling by Reducing Connascence

  Today is Independence Day in the USA, which got me thinking about loosely-coupled “independent” software components. I was reminded of a video I bookmarked quite a while ago of Jim Weirich’s “Grand Unified Theory of Software Design” talk at MountainWest RubyConf 2009. I finally watched that video this morning. I highly recommend it. In the video, Jim talks about software connascence. The dictionary definition of connascence (con-NAY-sense) is: 1. The common birth of two or more at the same time 2. That which is born or produced with another. 3. The act of growing together. The brief Wikipedia page about Connascent Software Components says that: Two software components are connascent if a change in one would require the other to be modified in order to maintain the overall correctness of the system. Connascence is a way to characterize and reason about certain types of complexity in software systems. The term was introduced to the software world in Meilir Page-Jones’ 1996 book “What Every Programmer Should Know About Object-Oriented Design”. The middle third of that book is the author’s proposed graphical notation for describing OO designs. UML became the standard about a year later, so a revised version of the book was published in 1999 as “Fundamentals of Object-Oriented Design in UML”. Weirich says that the third part of the book, in which Page-Jones introduces the concept of connascence “is worth the price of the entire book”. (The price of the entire book, by the way, is not much – I just bought a used copy on Amazon for $1.36, so that was a pretty low-risk investment. I’m looking forward to getting the book and learning about connascence from the original source.) Meanwhile, here’s my summary of Weirich’s summary of Page-Jones writings about connascence: The stronger the form of connascence, the more difficult and costly it is to change the elements in the relationship. Some of the connascence types, ordered from weak to strong are: Connascence of Name Connascence of name is when multiple components must agree on the name of an entity. If you change the name of a method or property, then you need to change all references to that method or property. Duh. Connascence of name is unavoidable, assuming your objects are actually used. My main takeaway about connascence of name is that it emphasizes the importance of giving things good names so you don’t need to go changing them later. Connascence of Type Connascence of type is when multiple components must agree on the type of an entity. I assume this is more of a problem for languages without compilers (especially when used in apps without tests). I know it’s an issue with evil JavaScript type coercion. Connascence of Meaning Connascence of meaning is when multiple components must agree on the meaning of particular values, e.g that “1” means normal customer and “2” means preferred customer. The solution to this is to use constants or enums instead of “magic” strings or numbers, which reduces the coupling by changing the connascence form from “meaning” to “name”. Connascence of Position Connascence of positions is when multiple components must agree on the order of values. This refers to methods with multiple parameters, e.g.: eMailer.Send("[email protected]", "[email protected]", "Your order is complete", "Order completion notification"); The more parameters there are, the stronger the connascence of position is between the component and its callers. In the example above, it’s not immediately clear when reading the code which email addresses are sender and receiver, and which of the final two strings are subject vs. body. Connascence of position could be improved to connascence of type by replacing the parameter list with a struct or class. This “introduce parameter object” refactoring might be overkill for a method with 2 parameters, but would definitely be an improvement for a method with 10 parameters. This points out two “rules” of connascence:  The Rule of Degree: The acceptability of connascence is related to the degree of its occurrence. The Rule of Locality: Stronger forms of connascence are more acceptable if the elements involved are closely related. For example, positional arguments in private methods are less problematic than in public methods. Connascence of Algorithm Connascence of algorithm is when multiple components must agree on a particular algorithm. Be DRY – Don’t Repeat Yourself. If you have “cloned” code in multiple locations, refactor it into a common function.   Those are the “static” forms of connascence. There are also “dynamic” forms, including… Connascence of Execution Connascence of execution is when the order of execution of multiple components is important. Consumers of your class shouldn’t have to know that they have to call an .Initialize method before it’s safe to call a .DoSomething method. Connascence of Timing Connascence of timing is when the timing of the execution of multiple components is important. I’ll have to read up on this one when I get the book, but assume it’s largely about threading. Connascence of Identity Connascence of identity is when multiple components must reference the entity. The example Weirich gives is when you have two instances of the “Bob” Employee class and you call the .RaiseSalary method on one and then the .Pay method on the other does the payment use the updated salary?   Again, this is my summary of a summary, so please be forgiving if I misunderstood anything. • html/css vs CMS

  I am currently a CS student and an aspiring programmer/web developer. I am wondering whether it is worth taking the time to master html and css to make websites when these CMS services/wysiwyg editors (wordpress, squarespace) seem to be becoming more and more functional. Does anyone think these publishing services might eventually make the need to design websites from raw code unnecessary? If not, please explain why. If designing a website eventually becomes as simple as using Photoshop I would much rather invest my time in programming languages.

• Microsoft Townhall, An Example for Azure and MVC

  Microsoft just released an example named Microsoft Townhall which was built and deployed on Azure. It uses ASP.NET MVC as its webiste framework and the SQL Azure plus LinqToSQL as its the database and the ORM framework. You can download the source code at the MSDN Code Gallery. Basides the Azure it might be more useful to us to learn how they utilized ASP.NET MVC. • Learning computer architecture as a programmer

  I typically run across gurus at SO and other places (instructors, book authors etc.) that would say something along the lines "This will cause alignment issues" or other low level tidbits. I want to learn about all these tidbits that are relevant to programming. Now usually when I see low level books (computer architecture books for example) they are too low level and geared towards people whose primary area of interest is computer architecture and not software design. Do you have recommendations for books that go through low-level stuff that is relevant to programmers?

• How do I install only the KDE desktop (and not apps) on Unity?

  My question is pretty simple. I have Ubuntu 12.04 with Unity and I want to login with KDE. I have seen recommendations to: 1- run the three commands: $ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports $ sudo apt-get update $ sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop 2- run just the command: $ sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop 3- run the command: $ sudo apt-get install kde-standard 4- run the command: $ sudo apt-get install kde-full 5- run the command: $ sudo apt-get install plasma-desktop 6- run the command: $ sudo apt-get install kde-plasma-desktop 7- etc ... This question is very related to this one, but the answer there is not clear enough to me. There seems to be quite a number of quasi-identical commands one could use to install the KDE desktop. I just want the desktop, no KDE apps since I'll just use the ones I'm already using in Unity. Of course I also want the needed repositories added so the KDE desktop will be kept updated. How would I go about doing that?

  Hello there, I'm new to Game programmming and SDL, and I have been following Lazyfoo's SDL tutorials. My question is related to time based motion and frame rate based motion, basically which is better or appropriate depending on situations?. Could you give me an example where each of these methods are used?. Another question I have is that, in lazyfoo's two Motion tutorials (FPS based and time based) The time based method showed a much smoother animation while the Frame rate based one was a little hiccupy, meaning you could clearly see the gap between the previous location of the dot and its current position when you compare the two programs. As beginner which method should I stick to?(all I want is smooth animations).

• How can you learn to design nice looking websites?

  I am a moderately capable web developer. I can put stuff where I want it to go and put some JQuery stuff in there if I need to. However, if I am making my own website (which I am starting to do) I have no idea how to design it. If someone was to sit next to me a point to the screen and say "put this picture there, text there" I can do that quite easily. But designing my own site with my choice of colours and text will look like a toddler has invented it. Does anyone know any websites/books I can look at or has anyone got any tips on the basics of non-toddler web design?

  I'm in a private game programming school where there also are 3D art classes; sadly, there seems to be a lot more students in those latter classes, something like 50% or 100% more. So I was wondering: in the real video game industry, which of the artist/modeler or the programmer is more likely to be wanted in a company, so who will be paid more ? I'm sure there are artists which are obviously paid better than other programmers and I'm sure there are other sorts of jobs in the game industry (sound, management, testers), but I wanted to know if there is a general tendency for one or the other. And sometime I wonder even if an artist can happen to write scripts...

• Personal | Going For A Long Drive

  This weekend, we were planning on going to Mt. Rushmore, but with the weather the way it is, we decided to head south instead. So what are we going to do? A tour of different restaurants on the show Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives. Not very original I know since there are web sites and iPhone apps dedicated to locating the establishments, but it definitely sounds like it could be some fun. We are going to leave KC tonight and go through St. Louis, Memphis, Little Rock, Dallas, Oklahoma City, and back to KC. The kiddos are excited and we have plenty of movies, coloring books, etc in the car for the trip. This will be the first time we will get to use our turn around seats in the mini-van with our pull out table. I will have my laptop and phone if anything goes wrong with the site while I am gone and John will be back in KC as well. I hope to pushing some photos and reviews of the restaurants as we travel. • The purpose of using a constants pool for immutable constants

  Originally posted at stackoverflow.com/q/23961260 I come across the following code with a lot of frequency: if (myArray.length == Constants.ZERO_INT) or if (myString != null && !myString.equals(Constants.EMPTY_STRING)) Neither of these makes much sense to me. Isn't the point of having a constant pool for ease of code appearance and to allow for modularity? In both of the above cases, it just looks like needless noise that accomplishes neither objective. My question: what is the purpose of using a constants pool for variables like this which will never change? Or is this just cargo cult programming? If so, then why does it seem to be prevalent in the industry? (I've noticed it with at least two different employers I've worked with).

  Me and some friends developing simple 3D rendering engine as practice for the university. We used Ogre 3d as prototype and now we are developing it from base The engine is wrapped up in simple game that asks the user to select shape (circle, triangle, square...), color and dimensions and renders the image to the screen. It also enables to move and rotate the shape on screen using mouse. We would like to test automate the view rendering. I could not find any test framework for this issue and I would like to know how 3D test is done in non manual matter

• Visual Studio 2012 - Express vs Professional

  I'm having trouble finding a feature comparison between Visual Studio 2012 express edition and the professional edition. I'm using the trial Profession version at the moment, but it'll run out soon, so I need to make a decision whether to purchase the full version. Obviously I can just try both initially and see if the express edition is suitable, but the problem is that there are that many features in Visual Studio, there might be a really useful feature that was missing in the standard edition that I didn't even know existed! Or I didn't spot was missing until later down the line. I could really do with a feature comparison list like the one for all non-express editions here. It's a shame that page doesn't include the express edition. (as a side note, there doesn't seem to be a visual-studio-2012 tag, so I had to just use visual-studio. Could someone with enough rep to create tags add a visual-studio-2012 tag?)

• What kinds of low level knowledge matter?

  I realize that this question is similar to Low level programming - what's in it for me, but the answers didn't really address my question well. Part from just an understanding, how exactly does your low level knowledge translate into faster and better programs? There's the obvious lack of garbage collection, but what else is an advantage? Do you really outperform your optimizing compiler? Do you pack your data structures in as tight as possible and be concerned about alignment? There's extra freedom naturally, but does that really translate into a faster program?

• How to tweet automatically when you push a new package to nuget.org

  Wouldn’t it be nice if your followers could be notified whenever you publish a new version of a NuGet package? Currently, nuget.org offers no support for this, but with the following tricks, you can get it working without programming. The essential idea is to use the OData feed that nuget.org exposes to build an RSS feed with new items as you publish them, and have IFTTT do the tweeting from it.
