  • Class; Struct; Enum confusion, what is better?

    I have 46 rows of information, 2 columns each row ("Code Number", "Description"). These codes are returned to the client dependent upon the success or failure of their initial submission request. I do not want to use a database file (csv, sqlite, etc) for the storage/access. The closest type that I can think of for how I want these codes to be shown to the client is the exception class. Correct me if I'm wrong, but from what I can tell enums do not allow strings, though this sort of structure seemed the better option initially based on how it works (e.g. 100 = "missing name in request"). Thinking about it, creating a class might be the best modus operandi. However I would appreciate more experienced advice or direction and input from those who might have been in a similar situation.   • CustomErrors section does not handle 404 properly on production server

    Hi, I'd like my ASP.NET MVC application to redirect failed requests to matching action methods of a certain controller. This works fine on my development machine running Windows 7, but not on my production machine running Windows 2008 R2. I set up my web.config as follows: <customErrors mode="On" defaultRedirect="/Error/ServerError/500"> <error statusCode="403" redirect="/Error/AccessDenied" /> <error statusCode="404" redirect="/Error/FileNotFound" /> </customErrors> This customErrors section works fine on both of my machines (production and development) for 500 Internal Server errors. It also works fine for 404 errors on my development machine. However, it does not properly redirect 404 errors on the production machine. Instead of /Error/FileNotFound, I get the standard 404 page that comes with IIS 7. What could be the problem here?

  • Cross-database transactions from one SP

    I need to update multiple databases with a few simple SQL statement. The databases are configurared in SQL using 'Linked Servers', and the SQL versions are mixed (SQL 2008, SQL 2005, and SQL 2000). I intend to write a stored procedure in one of the databases, but I would like to do so using a transaction to make sure that each database gets updated consistently. Which of the following is the most accurate: Will a single BEGIN/COMMIT TRANSACTION work to guarantee that all statements across all databases are successful? Will I need multiple BEGIN TRANSACTIONS for each individual set of commands on a database? Are transactions even supported when updating remote databases? I would need to execute a remote SP with embedded transaction support. Note that I don't care about any kind of cross-database referential integrity; I'm just trying to update multiple databases at the same time from a single stored procedure if possible. Any other suggestions are welcome as well. Thanks!

    We usually put unnecessary checks in our business logic to avoid failures. Eg. 1. public ObjectABC funcABC(){ ObjectABC obj = new ObjectABC; .......... .......... //its never set to null here. .......... return obj; } ObjectABC o = funABC(); if(o!=null){ //do something } Why do we need this null check if we are sure that it will never be null? Is it a good practice or not? 2. int pplReached = funA(..,..,..); int totalPpl = funB(..,..,..); funA() just puts a few more restriction over result of funB(). Double percentage = (totalPpl==0||totalPpl<pplReached) ? 0.0 : pplReached/totalPpl; Do we again need this check? The questions is: Aren't we swallowing some fundamental issue by putting such checks? Issues which should be shown ideally, are avoided by putting these checks. What is the recommended way?

  • Pass a Message From Thread to Update UI

    Ive created a new thread for a file browser. The thread reads the contents of a directory. What I want to do is update the UI thread to draw a graphical representation of the files and folders. I know I can't update the UI from within a new thread so what I want to do is: whilst the file scanning thread iterates through a directories files and folders pass a file path string back to the UI thread.   • Is it ever OK to throw a java.lang.Error?

    I have a plugin module that goes into a web application. If the module does not load correctly, it does not make sense for the web application to go on, and the web application should probably not load at all, we would prefer this module to initialize correctly always. If I were to throw a runtime exception, it would get into the logs, and just get ignored since the application will continue anyway, and the end users would never know... I know that errors are meant to be thrown only under exceptional conditions, and they generally have to do with situations that the system cannot recover from, but what would you do in such a situation?

  • How to get result size from an SQL query and check size

    Hi I'm trying to write a piece of code for a simple verification method as part of a MVC. At present the SQL is not written as a prepared statement so obviously it is at risk to a SQL injection so any help in regards to writing the SQL as a prepared statement would be really helpful.   • Effective communication in a component-based system

    Yes, this is another question about my game engine, which is coming along very nicely, with much thanks to you guys. So, if you watched the video (or didn't), the objects in the game are composed of various components for things like position, sprites, movement, collision, sounds, health, etc. I have several message types defined for "tell" type communication between entities and components, but this only goes so far. There are plenty of times when I just need to ask for something, for example an entity's position. There are dozens of lines in my code that look like this: SomeComponent comp = (SomeComponent)entity.GetComponent(typeof(SomeComponent)); if (comp != null) comp.GetSomething(); I know this is very ugly, and I know that casting smells of improper OO design. But as complex as things are, there doesn't seem to be a better way. I could of course "hard-code" my component types and just have SomeComponent comp = entity.GetSomeComponent(); but that seems like a cop-out, and a bad one. I literally JUST REALIZED, while writing this, after having my code this way for months with no solution, that a generic will help me. SomeComponent comp = entity.GetComponent<SomeComponent>(); Amazing how that works. Anyway, this is still only a semantic improvement. My questions remain. Is this actually that bad? What's a better alternative?
