  …I’m becoming more of an addict of writing about my experiences, here in Kolkata! Today we started a bit of late at around 8 AM, did our breakfast and reached in class a bit late at around 9:50 AM, and here goes the surprise…. Today we had two lectures on “Managing Self” and two lectures on “Sustainable Development and Climate Change” (SDCC). Some of us got few self discipline lessons the moment they entered class and asked to “get out” :D So frankly speaking it was a nostalgic moment, which reminded us of Collage ;) We did a FIRO-B test as and got very good tips on managing ourselves and differentiate between “manager” and “leader” After the lunch we had our session on SDCC, in which the prof started by explaining “Credit Crisis”, and moved on to Sustainable Development and few great examples from industry and life~! After the class we went for shopping at Garihat Market, we ate Pani Puri and Moodi :P ..one more surprise…my room got flooded with lot of my new ePBM friends to take the copy of the pictures and we did lot of chit chat around anything and everything :D …so far so good…it’s an amazing experience for me and hopefully for others….who came out of their daily chores and went back to the nostalgic lanes of friendship, learning and most importantly “Happyness” ~~~ Cheers, ram :) EPBM 14 pics : http://epbm14.shutterfly.com/pictures

However, you can not split a test so I do not want the next test to begin if there is not enough time within the specified working hours of the day to complete it. Also, I would like to begin each day with a set-up period before the actual testing can begin. Is there a way to automatically begin each day with a setup period and have tasks that can not complete before the end of the specified work day defer starting until the next day?

  In yesterday’s blog post we learned the importance of the operational database in Big Data Story. In this article we will understand what is Hive and HQL in Big Data Story. Yahoo started working on PIG (we will understand that in the next blog post) for their application deployment on Hadoop. The goal of Yahoo to manage their unstructured data. Similarly Facebook started deploying their warehouse solutions on Hadoop which has resulted in HIVE. The reason for going with HIVE is because the traditional warehousing solutions are getting very expensive. What is HIVE? Hive is a datawarehouseing infrastructure for Hadoop. The primary responsibility is to provide data summarization, query and analysis. It  supports analysis of large datasets stored in Hadoop’s HDFS as well as on the Amazon S3 filesystem. The best part of HIVE is that it supports SQL-Like access to structured data which is known as HiveQL (or HQL) as well as big data analysis with the help of MapReduce. Hive is not built to get a quick response to queries but it it is built for data mining applications. Data mining applications can take from several minutes to several hours to analysis the data and HIVE is primarily used there. HIVE Organization The data are organized in three different formats in HIVE. Tables: They are very similar to RDBMS tables and contains rows and tables. Hive is just layered over the Hadoop File System (HDFS), hence tables are directly mapped to directories of the filesystems. It also supports tables stored in other native file systems. Partitions: Hive tables can have more than one partition. They are mapped to subdirectories and file systems as well. Buckets: In Hive data may be divided into buckets. Buckets are stored as files in partition in the underlying file system. Hive also has metastore which stores all the metadata. It is a relational database containing various information related to Hive Schema (column types, owners, key-value data, statistics etc.). We can use MySQL database over here. What is HiveSQL (HQL)? Hive query language provides the basic SQL like operations. Here are few of the tasks which HQL can do easily. Create and manage tables and partitions Support various Relational, Arithmetic and Logical Operators Evaluate functions Download the contents of a table to a local directory or result of queries to HDFS directory Here is the example of the HQL Query: SELECT upper(name), salesprice FROM sales; SELECT category, count(1) FROM products GROUP BY category; When you look at the above query, you can see they are very similar to SQL like queries.   Whenever I start a new project or come in during a hectic time to help salvage a deliverable – there is always a backlog. Generating the backlog can be a daunting exercise, but worth the effort. Once I have a backlog, I feel in control and the chaos begins to quell. In your everyday life, you too should keep a backlog. Here is how I do it; 1. Always carry a notebook 2. Start each day marking a new page with today’s date 3. Flip to yesterday’s notes and copy every task with an empty checkbox next to it, to the new empty page (today) 4. As the day progresses and you go to meetings, do your work, or get interrupted to do something…jot it down in today’s page and put an empty checkbox next to it. If you get it done during the day, awesome. Mark it complete. Keep carrying and writing every task to each new day until it is complete. Maybe one day, you will have an empty backlog and your sprint will be complete!

• Small Business HP Virtualisation and iSCSI SAN Options

  We are a small business that hosts our core product on a number of HP servers. Our core production setup is 1x HP DL380, high powered for a SQL Server Database 1x HP DL360, mid powered for our core application server 6x HP DL320, low powered for our front ends We run our training / testing / support systems on a similar setup, the servers are just older and less powerful. Unfortunately this is now causing us issues as the system has grown beyond the capabilities of these older servers. Upgrading these servers would be expensive and we believe that virtualisation is probably the way to go for the future. Locally we run a number of test / dev environments on ESXi using Direct Storoage on a couple of high powered DL360's and these are performing fairly well. We're thinking that instead of replacing all of our test servers that we can implement an iSCSI SAN and one or two high powered hosts. Hopefully looking that when it comes to replace our live servers as well that we can just expand the virual environment to cope. So my question is... Can anyone offer any advice on some suitable options? We have generally always been extremely happy with HP servers, all of our kit is currently HP, therefore our preference would be to stick with HP, however, I'm always happy to hear about other options. I'm hoping that initially a budget of around 15-25k (GBP) would be suitable, this could potentially be increased if I had confidence that the system would pave the way for a cost effective upgrade of our live systems in the future as well. I am new to SAN's and my only real experience is playing with OpenFiler on some old desktops. I think iSCSI should be suitable, but I've not done any research into how SQL server may perform. I've had a browser through HP's sites and see plenty of information about EVA, MSA, LeftHand, etc. However, from looking at all that, I don't see which options would be best and more importantly I don't know exactly what I would need to buy. Any help, links, opinions would be much appreciated. Thanks

  In Microsoft Project 2007, I can't work out why my tasks are scheduled to finish later than I would expect for the Duration I put in. I enter a task with a start date on a Monday and a 1-day duration, and it shows the Finish as Tuesday. Task Name Duration Start Finish Do Something 1 day 12/04/2010 13/04/2010 How can I set this up so a one-day task takes one day, and not one-and-a-bit? I want a one-day task that starts on a Monday to finish on the Monday.

• 2011 The Year of Awesomesauce

  So I was talking to one of my friends, Cathy Dew, and I’m wondering how to start out this post.  What kind of title should I put?  Somehow we’re just randomly throwing things out and this title pops into my head the one you see above. I woke up today to the buzz of a text message.  I spent New Years laying around until 3 am watching Warehouse 13 Episodes and drinking champagne.  It was one of the best New Year’s I spent with my boyfriend and my cat.  I figured I would sleep in until Noon, but ended up waking up around 11:15 to that text message buzz.  I guess my DE, Rachel Appel, had texted me “Happy New Years”, because Rachel is that kind of person.  I immediately proceeded to check my email.  I noticed my live account had a hit.  The account I rarely ever use had an email.  I sort of had that sinking suspicion I was going to get Silverlight MVP right?  So I open the email and something out of the blue happens it says “blah blah blah SharePoint Server MVP blah blah…”.  I’m sitting here a little confused what?  Really?  Just about when you give up on something the unexplained happens.  I am grateful for what I have every day. So let me tell you a story.  I was a senior in high school and it was December 31st, 1999.  A couple days prior my grandmother was complaining she had a cold and her assisted living facility was not going to let her see a doctor.  She claimed to be very sick.  New Year’s Eve Day 1999 my grandmother was rushed to the hospital sometime very early in the morning.  My uncle, my little brother, and myself were sitting in the waiting room eagerly awaiting news.  The Sydney Opera House was playing in the background as New Years 2000 for Australia was ringing in.  They come out and they tell us my grandmother has pneumonia.  She is in the ICU in critical condition.  Eventually time passes in the day and my parents take my brother and I home.  So in the car we had a huge fight that ended in the worst new years of my life.  The next 30 days were the worst 30 days of my life.  I went to the hospital every single day to do my homework and watch my grandmother.  Each day was a challenge mentally and physically as my grandmother berated me in her demented state.  On the 30th day my grandmother ended up in critical condition in the ICU maxed out on painkillers.  At approximately 3 am I hear my parents telling me they don’t want to wake me up and that my grandmother had passed away.  I must have cried more collectively that day than any other day in my life.  Every New Years Even since I have cried thinking about who she was and what she represented.  She was human looking back she wasn’t anything great, but she was one of the positive lights in my life.  Her and my dad and my other grandmother constantly tried to make me feel great when my mother was telling me the opposite.  I’d like to think since 2000 the past 11 years have been the best 11 years of my life.  I got out of a bad situation by using the tools that I had in front of me.  Good grades and getting into a college so I could aspire to be the person that I wanted to be.  I had some great people along the way to help me out. So getting to the point I like to help people further there lives somehow in the best way I can possibly help out.  This New Years was one of the great years that helped me forget the past and focus on the present.  It makes me realize how far I’ve come since high school and even since college.  The one thing I’ve been grappling with over the years is how do you feel good about making money while helping others out.  I’d to think I try really hard to give back to my community.  I could not have done what I did without other people’s help.  I sent out an email prior to even announcing I got the award today.  I can’t say I did everything on my own.  It’s not possible.  I had the help of others every step of the way.  I’m not sure if this makes sense but the award can’t just be mine.  This award is really owned by each and everyone who helped me get here.  From my dad to my grandmother to Rachel Appel to Bob Hunt to Jason Gallicchio to Cathy Dew to Mark Rackley to Johnny Ennion to Lee Brandt to Jeff Julian to John Alexander to Lori Gowin and to many others.  Thank you guys for all the help and support.   Here's a question for all my fellow contractors - I'm paid quite handsomely for my normal contracted hours (any overtime is billed at the same rate) but do you think it fair to bill for travel time to the other end of the country (regional office) when this takes place outside of the normal working day (or overlapping into the evening) as well as actual time holed up in a hotel room when you get there, ready for a normal working day the next day, along with the return journey? Petrol is claimed normally (nominal rate) and hotel is covered by the company I contract for.

  My name is Mohammad Raad and I started in the One Year Training program with Oracle on March 1, 2012. I graduated on September 2011 and started searching for a job. Starting your career, as you all know, is hard because some companies see you as a fresh graduate lacking experience and no one is willing to invest in you. I used to check the recruitment websites daily to see if there were openings to apply to, but unfortunately no one wanted to hire a zero year experience fresh graduate. One day I saw Oracle’s 1 year internship program advertised and that was what I needed. I applied but expected nothing to happen because I was used to applying and getting no replies, but they called and that was the start! I had my first interview over the phone and decided to go to Qatar and to continue to search for a job. Two weeks after arriving at Qatar, Oracle called me for a second interview in Lebanon so I booked a ticket on the same day because my interview was the next day I had my interview and went back to Qatar. On January 2012, I heard from Oracle that I was accepted and they choose me for this program, it was a day I will not forget! Starting on 1st March 2012, I was full of energy, willing to do anything to gain experience and prove that I can do it. What really give me a big push is my colleagues’ motivation and support especially from Youssef Halawi, my mentor and Rami Mattar because they believe in me and track my progress day-by-day. At Oracle, I meet customers, attend meetings, demos and presentations, partners’ events and online trainings. • Purple Cows, Copernicus, and Shampoo – Lessons in Customer Experience

  What makes a great customer experience? And, why should you or your organization care? These are the questions that set the stage for the Oracle Customer Experience Summit, which kicked off yesterday in San Francisco. Day 1: The first day was filled with demos and insights from customer experience experts and Oracle customers sharing what it takes to deliver great customer experiences. Author Seth Godin delivered an entertaining presentation that included an in-depth exploration of the always-connected, always-sharing experience revolution that we are witnessing and yes, talked about the purple cow. It turns out that customer experience is your way to be the purple cow. Before everyone headed out to see Pearl Jam and Kings of Leon at the Oracle customer appreciation event, the day wrapped up with a discussion around building a customer-centric culture. Where do you start? Whom does it involve? What are some pitfalls to avoid? Day 2: The second day addressed the details behind all the questions brought up at the end of Day 1. Before you start on a customer experience initiative, Paul Hagen noted that you must understand you will forge a path similar to Copernicus. You will be proposing ideas and approaches that challenge current thinking in your organization. Just as Copernicus' heliocentric theory started a scientific revolution, your customer-centric efforts will start an experience revolution. If you think customer experience is like a traditional marketing approach, think again. It’s not about controlling your customers and leading them where you want them to go. It might sound like heresy to some, but your customers are already in control, whether or not your company realizes and acknowledges it. And, to survive and thrive, you'll have to focus on customers by thinking outside-in and working towards a brand that is better and more authentic. We learned how Vail Resorts takes this customer-centric approach. Employees must experience the mountain themselves and understand the experience from the guest’s standpoint. This has created a culture where employees do things for guests that are not expected. We also learned a valuable lesson in designing and innovating customer-centered experiences from Kerry Bodine. First you make the thing, and then you make the thing right. In this case, the thing is customer experience. Getting customer experience right means iterative prototyping and testing of your ideas. This is where shampoo comes in—think lather, rinse, repeat. Be prepared to keep repeating until the customer experience is right. • Time tracking and payment registration architecture

  ?itle might be a little bit incorrect. :) Anyway, I'm building a software where employees input time they worked per day (work hours) and employer "pays" for this time. "Payment" is done outside this system, so employer just "confirms" (checkbox or something like this) which work hours are paid. So the question is - what is the best way (both UI and data storage wise) to implement this? At the moment I have this idea: Employee selects week and manually (with some Javascript helpers, like "fill the same time for all days") inputs work hours in every day of the week. Employer confirms payment the same way employee inputs data (selects week, confirms each day). Data is saved in DB as unix timestamp (one day per table row). Problem is 14 inputs (7 days * ("hours from" + "hours to" input), yet this approach seems kinda easy to implement. Maybe I'm overlooking something and this can be done differently and better? Maybe someone has any example of already working software?

• Google SMTP relay sending limits

  I'm considering using Google Apps for email with my company domain and for sending emails to customers from my website using SMTP. On Google's website it says the following: Limits for registered Google Apps users A registered Google Apps user cannot relay messages to more than 2,000 recipients per day. Limits per domain Per-domain sending limits are determined by the number of users in your Google Apps account. There are two per-domain limits: The maximum number of recipients allowed per domain per day is approximately 130 times the number of users in your Google Apps account. The maximum number of recipients allowed per domain in a 10 minute window is approximately 9 times the number of users in your Google Apps account. Additionally, the maximum number of recipients allowed per domain per day for accounts not yet paid for during the first month of service is 100. If I'm a single user, with a single domain, then does that mean I can only email 130 people a day using SMTP? That limit seems low.

• HP Ambient Light Sensor Adjustment

  I have an HP nc4400 running Windows 7 64 bit. If I have the ambient light sensor enabled, it works well, but, its slightly too dim. I can turn off the light sensor and turn up the brightness manually and its more than bright enough. When I go to the brightness settings in Windows I can make the screen dimmer with the ambient light sensor enabled but cannot make it as bright as if it is disabled. So my question is, is it possible to keep the light sensor enabled but configure it so that the screen is brighter for given "ambient light". At the moment I have to turn it off whenever I'm in the office or outside in sunlight as I need the screen as bright as possible and it seems no matter how light it is, it never goes to full brightness when it's enabled.

• Is committing/checking in code everyday a good practice?

  I've been reading Martin Fowler's note on Continuous Integration and he lists as a must "Everyone Commits To the Mainline Every Day". I do not like to commit code unless the section I'm working on is complete and that in practice I commit my code every three days: one day to investigate/reproduce the task and make some preliminary changes, a second day to complete the changes, and a third day to write the tests and clean it up^ for submission. I would not feel comfortable submitting the code sooner. Now, I pull changes from the repository and integrate them locally usually twice a day, but I do not commit that often unless I can carve out a smaller piece of work. Question: is committing everyday such a good practice that I should change my workflow to accomodate it, or it is not that advisable? Edit: I guess I should have clarified that I meant "commit" in the CVS meaning of it (aka "push") since that is likely what Fowler would have meant in 2006 when he wrote this. ^ The order is more arbitrary and depends on the task, my point was to illustrate the time span and activities, not the exact sequence.

  There has been a flurry of activity on the internet discussing a huge difference between the productivity of the best programmers versus the productivity of the worst.
