• Ubuntu 12.04 won't shut down - stopping winbind daemon

  My Precise Pangolin sometimes won't shut down - the screen is black with text on it. Mostly last line says something like "stopping winbind deamon" (sometimes also virtualbox, which is above winbind daemon; edit: sometimes the last line says "running unattended updates") and it stays like this for about ten miutes. Then I usually hold the power button for 5s to shut it down. It's very unpredictable - sometimes the computer shuts down without problem and sometimes it hangs. I've tried many ways to shut it down: HW button, panel applet, sudo shutdown -h now, sudo poweroff, sudo halt, etc. even sudo reboot or restart from panel applet have this problem. Sometimes it works ok but every method named hung at least once on the same (damned) line. My specs: FUJITSU SIEMENS LIFEBOOK E8310, Intel Core2 Duo T7300 @ 2.00GHz, 3GB RAM, GPU: Mobile Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset Family Ubuntu 12.04.2 32bit, 3.5.0-41-generic kernel (but it did it on older kernels and 12.04.x systems too). • How Can I Edit Google Chrome's 'History Provider Cache' File?

  I'm interested in editing (not completely deleting) contents of some of Google Chrome's cache files. In particular, the 'History Provider Cache' (found in ~/Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome/Default on Mac). As this other question suggests, it appears to simply be a SQLite file. Unfortunately, when I try to open it using a SQLite browser (MesaSQLite) I'm asked for an encryption key. So, I'd welcome any suggestions on how to either (1) determine the encryption key, or (2) an alternate way to edit this file. The end goal is to be able to remove specific annoying suggestions in the Omnibar. I've read countless other techniques, but none seem to remove suggestions that have the clock icon next to it. Some say deleting this file entirely will do the trick (and I imagine it will), but I don't wish to trash my entire browsing history. I find most of the suggestions to be useful and helpful, and I'd like to preserve that.

  My idea of a text overlay has the following timeline: In-transition Static display Out-transition For this project, I am particularly fond of iMovie's Organic Main text overlay. I want it to display for an extended period. The problem is, when I set its display time for 3:20 (minutes:seconds), it performs its transition over the whole period. The text would won't be fully seen until the next 3 minutes. This is what I want: In-transition for 1 second Static display for 3:18 minutes Out-transition for 1 second Is that possible with iMovie?

• PhysX Capsule Character Controller floating above ground

  I am using PhysX Version 3.0.2 in the simulation package I'm working on, and I've encountered some bizarre behavior with the capsule character controller. When I set the controller's height and radius to the appropriate values (r = 0.25, h = 1.86)it behaves correctly (moving along the ground, colliding with other objects, and so on) except that the capsule itself is floating above the ground. The actor will then bump his head when trying to get through a door, since the capsule is the correct height but also floating above the ground. This image should illustrate what I'm going on about: One can clearly see that the rest of the scene has their collision bodies wrapped correctly, it's just the capsule that's going wrong! The stop-gap I've implemented is creating a smaller capsule and giving it an offset, but I need to implement ray-picking for the controller next so the capsule has to surround the character model properly. • powershell Read-host does not stop for input

  I thought this would be fairly basic, but i'm stuck. I have 3 lines of powershell script in which I want to collect a mailbox name from user input, then create names based on that mailbox name. (later the script proceeds to create the groups in AD, etc) my problem is that when I run all 3 of these lines by pasting them into powershell window, I don't get a change to enter the response to read-host. • How to disable Utility Manager (Windows Key + U)

  How do I disable the Windows Key+U hotkey in Windows XP? Alternatively, how do I stop the utility manager from being active? The two are related. The utilty manager is currently providing a potential security hole and I need to remove it*. The system I'm developing uses a custom Gina to log in and start a custom shell. This removes most Windows Key hotkeys but the Win+U still pops up the manager app. Update: Things I've tried and don't work: NoWinKeys registry setting - this only affects explorer hotkeys; Renaming utilman.exe - program reappears next login; Third party software - not really an option, these machines are audited by the clients and additional, third party software would be unlikely to be accepted. Also, the proedure needs to be reasonably straightforward - this has to be done by field service engineers to existing machines (machines currently in Russia, Holland, France, Spain, Ireland and USA). * The hole is via the internet options in the help viewer the utility app links to.

  I am looking to buy numbers in bulk on DIDx.net. After I purchase the numbers in a particular area code, I want to forward those numbers to other numbers that are outside of that area code. This way it will be seen as a local call versus long distance. I have the customers but I don't have the system I need. I have read about Asterisk, VOIP, SIP, and BYOH. But I have no clue what will be the best system for me. Does anyone have any idea what my next step should be when it comes to hardware and software? Or what type of operating system I should use? I basically want to set up a system like GoogleVoice & Phonebooth.

• How to view multiple log files as one file in unix/linux

  Hi, I was wondering if there is a convenient way in linux/unix to read multiple log files as one. More specifically, I would like to view a sequence of log files (app.log, app.log.1 app.log.2, etc) as one big file using normal unix tools (vi, less, etc). When the EOF is read the tool will automatically move to the beginning of the next file. During my work I have to analyze uat/prod logs to investigate and solve problems. The fact that I need to traverse many log files disturbs my work and causes delays. Any ideas?

• Bind is updating DNS with wrong resolver info after rndc flush expires

  I'm running Bind 9 on a small office server (Centos 5) with a local mailserver. There's a domain we need to email - it shows wrong DNS info for the MX servers using the local bind, so an RNDC flush updates this correctly - but then, after some time - it reverts back to the wrong resolver. I would have thought that 'rndc flush' just clears the local cache and pulls all the authoritative info down - so why is it being overwritten (by what seems like the next update)? where do I need to look? Presumably there's some named logging(?) to determine where it's getting the [new or cached] updates from?

  This post is my daily summary of activities that I am going to take to reduce my overall weight by 15 lbs. I am not an overweight person as per my height of 5.11 I have decent weight of 178.4 and good body build. But from a long time(approx 3 month) I am thinking of getting 2-3 abs (note not 6 abs) and reducing my weight to below 170 ( which I was 2 years ago). This post will work as my daily diary of what I ate, what exercises I did, what apps/software I used to monitor my weight loss. Sometime it will not contain much information but some time when I will research will contain information for people who really want to reduce weight. My current target for next few week is to run 2.5 miles everyday under 30 minutes. Eat a lot of fruits and vegetable. No burger or tacos. No meat either fat or lean. And checking body weight after every four hour. Here are reading for today10:00 AM  - 178.22:00 PM    - 178.4I have already ran for 2 miles in 25 minutes, did a little bit of shoulder exercise and had eaten small bowl of vegetable biryani and two bread.I hope this post and all coming post will give the reader the first hand experience of a person who had read every blog and articles related to reducing weight and now trying to do it by implementing all of them by self. My approach will be a healthy way of reducing weight, I am not going to starve my self or going to eat only fruits all day. I will enjoy all the food item that I like to eat and will work hard on my body. This way I will / reduce the weight naturally and will increase the flexibility, durability and immunity of my system /body.

To test it out, I immediately edited my .profile to define this variable: export HISTIGNORE=ls I tested it out and this is great! It excludes plain 'ls' commands from my history without excluding more interesting commands with lengthy paths, but having recently harvested a great deal of wisdom from SU I am eager to know what other commands superusers might recommend or other lessons learned. What can you share about using the HISTIGNORE variable in bash? (Note: I'm about to board my next flight and I have obligations upon arrival, so I will be absent for a number of hours before I can respond to comments...)

• Symantec Backup exec 2012 for SBS - moving data to offsite drives

  Can anyone advise how best to run the following strategy, or even if it is possible/sensible strategy? I am looking to backup an SBS server using BE2012 where the data is backed up on a weekly full backup, with subsequent daily incrementals till the end of the week, a fresh full backup will then be taken the next weekend, and the cycle repeats for 4 weeks, thus 4 full backups with incrementals. This months worth of backups will then be moved off to an offsite store via USB drive for safe keeping. Is this viable, sensible, or am i just a bit crazy? All ideas are welcome.

• Access Control Service: Programmatically Accessing Identity Provider Information and Redirect URLs

  In my last post I showed you that different redirect URLs trigger different response behaviors in ACS. Where did I actually get these URLs from? The answer is simple – I asked ACS ;) ACS publishes a JSON encoded feed that contains information about all registered identity providers, their display names, logos and URLs. • Intermittent sound on an Medion Akoya S5610

  The sound on my machine (Medion Akoya S5610) works intermittently. If I reboot enough times I do get sound. This happened before I upgraded, when running Oneiric too. I have fiddled around with alsa-base.conf, putting in different values for model in options snd-hda-intel model=but still the issue persists (although I get the impression that I am more like to have sound on the next reboot if I have edited that file although I can't be sure of this). Adding index=0 does not help the situation either. I have been thinking that this problem could be related some how to the order that driver modules are loaded. The snd-hda-intel module is also used for the sound card (ALC888) in my graphics card. Could it be that these are some how competing? If so, how do I add a preference when they are using the same module? • How do I debug xorg/fglrx related system freezes on Ubuntu 12.10?

  My brand new system is randomly freezing and I don't know how to debug the issue. I have tried using the latest fglrx and fglrx-beta. I have loaded 3.6.x kernel. I do not see anything relevant in dmesg, kern.log, syslog, .xsession-errors or Xorg.log. I cannot ssh into the machine when frozen from another machine. I know that system resources not being stressed when the crashes happen. It seems that video and any gaming (very simple graphics games) contribute to the freezes most frequently. However, I have experienced the crash before when just using Chrome. I suspect the crashes are xorg/fglrx related, but I have no evidence to back that up. Where should I look? What should I grep for? What should I try next?

• What are some techniques I can use to refactor Object Oriented code into Functional code?

  I've spent about 20-40 hours developing part of a game using JavaScript and HTML5 canvas. When I started I had no idea what I was doing. So it started as a proof of concept and is coming along nicely now, but it has no automated tests. The game is starting to become complex enough that it could benefit from some automated testing, but it seems tough to do because the code depends on mutating global state. I'd like to refactor the whole thing using Underscore.js, a functional programming library for JavaScript. Part of me thinks I should just start from scratch using a Functional Programming style and testing. But, I think refactoring the imperative code into declarative code might be a better learning experience and a safer way to get to my current state of functionality. Problem is, I know what I want my code to look like in the end, but I don't know how to turn my current code into it. I'm hoping some people here could give me some tips a la the Refactoring book and Working Effectively With Legacy Code. For example, as a first step I'm thinking about "banning" global state. Take every function that uses a global variable and pass it in as a parameter instead. Next step may be to "ban" mutation, and to always return a new object. Any advice would be appreciated. I've never taken OO code and refactored it into Functional code before.

• Desktop speakers with headphone port and separate volume controls

  I currently use the excellent Logitech X-230 desktop speaker/subwoofer set, which I love for the volume dial on the front which gives me a nice, quick, tactile control of my sound without requiring a remote or keyboard buttons or some awkward software slider. Additionally, there's a very convenient headphone jack right next to the volume dial but the volume dial only controls the speakers, leaving the headphones at full volume. The goal is to be able to adjust the sound in my headphones without having to fumble around and find an inline headphone volume control (and my current favorite pair doesn't even have one). Is anyone aware of a desktop speaker set that has convenient volume controls for both levels?

I would like to edit the code so that instead of using the currently selected folder as the source for the messages, there would be a hard-coded folder - something like Set Messages = NS.Folders("Personal Folders").Folders("Moved"). I'm a VBA rookie and tried just replacing the Set Messages line with this which resulted in a Run-time error '13': Type mismatch which I think refers to a mismatch of the Dim Messages and the Set Messages commands. I've tried using different Dim definitions with no luck. I'm guessing that someone who knows VBA will see the way to do this right away. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

• Can the "Documents" standard folder be rescued and how?

  Anyone who likes their Documents folder to contain only things they place there knows that the standard Documents folder is completely unsuitable for this task. Every program seems to want to put its settings, data, or something equally irrelevant into the Documents folder, despite the fact that there are folders specifically for this job. So that this doesn't sound empty, take my personal "Documents" folder as an example. I don't ever use it, in that I never, under any circumstances, save anything into this folder myself. And yet, it contains 46 folders and 3 files at the top level, for a total of 800 files in 500 folders. That's 190 MB of "documents" I didn't create. Obviously any actual documents would immediately get lost in this mess. My question is: can anything be done to improve the situation sufficiently to make "Documents" useful again, say over the next 5 years? Can programmers be somehow educated en-masse not to use it as a dumping ground? Could the OS start reporting some "fake" location hidden under AppData through the existing APIs, while only allowing Explorer and the various Open/Save dialogs to know where the "real" Documents folder resides? Or are any attempts completely futile or even unnecessary?

• Windows XP/Firewall -- Can't open UDP port 9100 for JetDirect sharing

  I'm setting up my Dad's laptop (Vista) to print to an HP Deskjet printer attached to a Windows XP Desktop box. The XP box is running Windows firewall. Laptop sits on 192.168.1.66, Desktop 192.168.1.65. I set up logging in the firewall, and determined that it is dropping inbound packets on TCP port 9100, used by JetDirect, the printing protocol. I set up an exception on TCP port 9100, allowing access to the local subnet. There's also an entry under the 'allow applications' tab which was marked for the exact printer model. I selected this as well, then tried to print again... I see more dropped packets from 192.168.1.66 to 192.168.1.65 for TCP port 9100. What do I try next?

  How To Cancel Pending Windows 7 Updates? The key is pending. The shutdown button has the windows update symbol meaning that there are updates that were selected to be installed which were download and will be installed upon shutdown. The only thing is that my machine will no longer boot if I let it install those updates! They are incompatible with a driver needed in the system and I did not found out until too late. The system admin used a recovery disk to get back to the previous restore point, only the updates are now pending, so I need to cancel those before the machine shutdowns next.

  I currently have a website and blog and using a limited web hosting plan. When I upload images on my hosting server it consumes a lot of bandwidth and space. So I was thinking of hosting images on some-other image hosting site and direct linking it to my site. I found out few sites like imageshack, photobucket, tinypic, imgur. However, I see all have certain restrictions. The features i am looking for are as follows: 1. At least 10gb space 2. At least 500gb bandwidth (bec I hav very high traffic) 3. Very high speed even during heavy load like 1000 visitors accessing every hour. 4. Ultra reliable servers (99.9% uptime) 5. Privacy control 6. Must not ever delete image if inactive 7.
