• What are some strategies for maintaining a common database schema with a team of developers and no D

  I'm curious about how others have approached the problem of maintaining and synchronizing database changes across many (10+) developers without a DBA? What I mean, basically, is that if someone wants to make a change to the database, what are some strategies to doing that? (i.e. I've created a 'Car' model and now I want to apply the appropriate DDL to the database, etc..) We're primarily a Python shop and our ORM is SQLAlchemy. Previously, we had written our models in such a way to create the models using our ORM, but we recently ditched this because: We couldn't track changes using the ORM The state of the ORM wasn't in sync with the database (e.g. lots of differences primarily related to indexes and unique constraints) There was no way to audit database changes unless the developer documented the database change via email to the team. Our solution to this problem was to basically have a "gatekeeper" individual who checks every change into the database and applies all accepted database changes to an accepted_db_changes.sql file, whereby the developers who need to make any database changes put their requests into a proposed_db_changes.sql file. We check this file in, and, when it's updated, we all apply the change to our personal database on our development machine. We don't create indexes or constraints on the models, they are applied explicitly on the database. I would like to know what are some strategies to maintain database schemas and if ours is seems reasonable. Thanks!

  Hi, We are developing an application which consists of: a source code base given to us by a partner infrequently. This is a somewhat working code, "final" version of something. They have their own release cycle and version tracking. on the code base above we make our changes. These can be either bugfixes or development of new features. Till now, we managed to create some code mayhem, as a result we would like to put all this in a SVN repository. I would like to ask you what you think is the best practice for this to happen with the less pain. The followings are our things that we consider important: We would like to track our bugfixes/changes since we cannot send back bugfixes to our software vendor, but we can report a bug (and they might or might not fix it). All we develop on their code remains "in-house" they are not interested in our changes. As long as we don't get a new codebase from the vendor, we consider their latest version to be the stable one we are working on. This might be branched down further, but the result is always a stable trunk, the build is done based on this "stable" trunk. When the vendor releases a new version we would like to merge our "stable" trunk (which contains a lot of changes) with their changes, thus creating a new "stable" trunk. For each version we deploy (to clients) we should be able later to fix bugs only on that version, for clients who have installed our system using that specific version There are more developers working on the codebase... I know I can add custom message to the "onbeforeunload dialog" this way: window.onbeforeunload = function() { return 'You have unsaved changes!'; } (Source) but I want to display the dialog only where there really are some unsaved changes. • Doubts About Core Data NSManagedObject Deep Copy

  Hello everyone, I have a situation where I must copy one NSManagedObject from the main context into an editing context. It sounds unnecessary to most people as I have seen in similar situations described in Stackoverflow but I looks like I need it. In my app there are many views in a tab bar and every view handles different information that is related to the other views. I think I need multiple MOCs since the user may jump from tab to tab and leave unsaved changes in some tab but maybe it saves data in some other tab/view so if that happens the changes in the rest of the views are saved without user consent and in the worst case scenario makes the app crash. For adding new information I got away by using an adding MOC and then merging changes in both MOCs but for editing is not that easy. I saw a similar situation here in Stackoverflow but the app crashes since my data model doesn't seem to use NSMutableSet for the relationships (I don't think I have a many-to-many relationship, just one-to-many) I think it can be modified so I can retrieve the relationships as if they were attributes for (NSString *attr in relationships) { [cloned setValue:[source valueForKey:attr] forKey:attr]; } but I don't know how to merge the changes of the cloned and original objects. I think I could just delete the object from the main context, then merge both contexts and save changes in the main context but I don't know if is the right way to do it. I'm also concerned about database integrity since I'm not sure that the inverse relationships will keep the same reference to the cloned object as if it were the original one. Can some one please enlighten me about this?

• Experience migrating legacy Cobol/PL1 to Java

  ORIGINAL Q: I'm wondering if anyone has had experience of migrating a large Cobol/PL1 codebase to Java? How automated was the process and how maintainable was the output? How did the move from transactional to OO work out? Any lessons learned along the way or resources/white papers that may be of benefit would be appreciated. EDIT 7/7: Certainly the NACA approach is interesting, the ability to continue making your BAU changes to the COBOL code right up to the point of releasing the JAVA version has merit for any organization. The argument for procedural Java in the same layout as the COBOL to give the coders a sense of comfort while familiarizing with the Java language is a valid argument for a large organisation with a large code base. As @Didier points out the $3mil annual saving gives scope for generous padding on any BAU changes going forward to refactor the code on an ongoing basis. As he puts it if you care about your people you find a way to keep them happy while gradually challenging them. The problem as I see it with the suggestion from @duffymo to Best to try and really understand the problem at its roots and re-express it as an object-oriented system is that if you have any BAU changes ongoing then during the LONG project lifetime of coding your new OO system you end up coding & testing changes on the double. That is a major benefit of the NACA approach. I've had some experience of migrating Client-Server applications to a web implementation and this was one of the major issues we encountered, constantly shifting requirements due to BAU changes. It made PM & scheduling a real challenge. Thanks to @hhafez who's experience is nicely put as "similar but slightly different" and has had a reasonably satisfactory experience of an automatic code migration from Ada to Java. • Combining Hg Commits Before Pushing?

  Let's say I am working on a feature branch cloned from an hg repository - I make some commits and then push the changes back to the repository as expected. However, is there any way to combine multiple commits into a single changeset for the push? For example, today I committed some changes and then remembered I hadn't updated the README file - which meant a 'single' set of changes actually consisted of 2 commits to my local repository. When I pushed these changes back to the original repository it would of been useful to combine the two as a single entity to save cluttering up the repository history.

• WinForms data binding with a Save button?

  How is data binding in C# WinForms supposed to work when you have a Save button? I don't want the data updated until I press Save! I have two forms (list and detail) backed by a BindingList<T> collection and my custom object from that collection, respectively. I can bind each form to the list or object appropriately. However, any changes made in the detail form are immediately reflected in the list form - I don't want to save the changes and update the details shown in the list until the Save button is pressed. Is data binding designed to support this? Is there a common pattern for doing so? Whichever way I look at it, binding doesn't seem to be able to support this scenario. I've considered the following: Pass a clone of the object to the detail form, but then I have to reconcile the changes on Save - changes may have been made to the copy in the list in the meantime. Implementing IEditableObject and calling EndEdit on save almost works as I can prevent the list being notified of the changes made until Save is pressed, but if something else causes a refresh the list is updated with the interim data. I'm currently left with dispensing with data binding in my detail view, and doing it all manually. Which is rather annoying.

  In an ASP.NET Web Site project, I've always been able to make changes to the underlying C# code and simply refresh the page in the browser and my changes would be there instantly. I can do the same thing when working with Java and Eclipse - edit my Java source and refresh the page and my changes are there. I cannot do this in ASP.NET MVC though and it is a real downer - I have to stop the running process and make my changes, and then restart debugging. This is a huge waste of time. Am I doing it wrong? What is the best approach to ASP.NET MVC development?

  I have a bare repository initialize on my webserver. I code on my workstation and I'm able to push/pull/commit changes to it. Now, I want to deploy this code on the webserver but into my apache directory (/var/www/html). If I wanted to track the changes (only pull no push) from this directory, should I clone the repo first? This way I can make changes locally, then commit and push to "central repo" and then pull from the documentroot folder to see the changes in "prod."

  We are looking to implement a rich-text box in an ASP.NET application and our requirements are specific to using the "Track Changes" features of Microsoft Word. The closest thing we found in the RadEditor by Telerik. This is a nice control that has a "Track Changes" button and will give you the ability to track the changes from the text in the box to now. It does not let you track your changes from the two previous versions. We have used CVSWeb in the past and the display was not great but it did have the ability (in a web page) to diff two different versions of text (source code in this case). Does anyone have any experience or know of any web-based diff tools that work nicely with a rich-text editor in the web?

  I am using git to track content which is changed by some people and shared "read-only" with others. The "readers" may from time to time need to make a change, but mostly they will not. I want to allow for the git "writers" to rebase pushed branches** if need be, and ensure that the "readers" never accidentally get a merge. That's normally easy enough. git pull origin +master There's one case that seems to cause problems. If a reader makes a local change, the command above will merge. I want pull to be fully automatic if the reader has not made local changes, while if they have made local changes, it should stop and ask for input. I want to track any upstream changes while being careful about merging downstream changes. In a way, I don't really want to pull. I want to track the master branch exactly. ** (I know this is not a best practice, but it seems necessary in our case: we have one main branch that contains most of the work and some topic branches for specific customers with minor changes that need to be isolated. It seems easiest to frequently rebase to keep the topics up to date.)

• Problem inserting JavaScript into a CKEditor Instance running inside a jQuery-UI Dialog Box

  Hello Overflowers! Here's what's going on: I'm building an app (using PHP, jQuery, etc), part of which lets users edit various bits of a web page (Header, Footer, Main Content, Sidebar) using CKEditor. It's set up so that each editable bit has an "Edit Content" button in the upper right that, on click, launches an instance of CKEditor inside a jQuery-UI Dialog box. After the user is done editing, they can click an 'Update Changes' button that passes the edited content back off to the main page and closes the Dialog/CKeditor. It's all working magnificently, save for one thing. If someone inserts any JavaScript code, wrapped in 'script' tags, using either the Insert HTML Plugin for CKEditor or by going to 'Source' in CKEditor and placing the code in the source, everything seems okay until they click the 'Update Changes' button. The JavaScript appears to be inserting properly, but when 'Update Changes' is clicked, instead of the Dialog closing and passing the script back into the div where it belongs, what I get instead is an all-white screen with just the output of the JavaScript. For example, a simple 'Hello World' script results in a white screen with the string 'Hello World' in the upper left corner; for more intricate scripts, like an API call to, say Aweber, that generates a newsletter signup form, I get an all-white screen with the resulting form from the Aweber API call perfectly rendered in the middle of the screen. One of the most confusing parts is that, on these pages, if I click 'View Source', I get absolutely nothing. Blank emptiness.
