• How to explain to a developer that adding extra if - else if conditions is not a good way to "improv

  Recently I've bumped into the following C++ code: if (a) { f(); } else if (b) { f(); } else if (c) { f(); } Where a, b and c are all different conditions, and they are not very short. I tried to change the code to: if (a || b || c) { f(); } But the author opposed saying that my change will decrease readability of the code. I had two arguments: 1) You should not increase readability by replacing one branching statement with three (though I really doubt that it's possible to make code more readable by using else if instead of ||). 2) It's not the fastest code, and no compiler will optimize this. But my arguments did not convince him. What would you tell a programmer writing such a code? Do you think complex condition is an excuse for using else if instead of OR?

  I'm having problem displaying UIImage in UIImageView. I looked all over stackoverflow for similar questions, but none of the fixes helped me. The image is indeed in my bundle File Inspector - Target Membership is checked for the image IBOutlet is connected (I have tried both using IBOutlet and doing it programmatically) Both png nor jpg works Here's the code for using Interface Builder - //@property and @synthesize set for IBOutlet UIImageView *imageView - (void)viewDidLoad { [super viewDidLoad]; NSAssert(self.imageView, @"self.imageView is nil.   My class inherit from UITableViewCell, i have make some custom transitions to push a new detail view when an image get selected. [UIView transitionWithView:self.masterView duration:0.5 options:UIViewAnimationOptionShowHideTransitionViews animations:^ { [self.masterView addSubview:self.detailImage]; } completion:nil]; My code works fine, the detailImage subview is shown with a transition, but this transition is not what i want exactly. What i want to perform is a simple transition from bottom to up. The list of UIViewAnimation doesn't contain such animation. Is there any way to use that transition without changing my class inheritance to UINavigationController ?

• Convert sets to frozensets as values of a dictionary

  I have dictionary that is built as part of the initialization of my object. I know that it will not change during the lifetime of the object. The dictionary maps keys to sets. I want to convert all the values from sets to frozensets, to make sure they do not get changed. Currently I do that like this: for key in self.my_dict.iterkeys(): self.my_dict[key] = frozenset(self.my_dict[key]) Is there a simpler way to achieve this? I cannot build frozenset right away, because I do not how much items will be in each set until i have built the complete dictionary.

• Jquery .text() seems not to work on XML in IE7

  My PHP backend sends XML response to the client (ajax): <response> <code>0</code> <message>OK</message> </response> in the javascript I'm trying to get CODE value in this way: var errorCode = $('code', xml).text(); and then depending on errorCode value I do processing. It is working fine in all browsers I tested except IE7. Instead of CODE value - it is giving me the empty string. The problem is not in 0 value, because I tried to use 5 as a code for example - the result was the same. Any ideas, because I'm stuck with :(( Thanks.

  Dear Everyone, I am currently using mysqldb. What is the correct way to escape strings in mysqldb arguments? Note that E = lambda x: x.encode('utf-8') 1) so my connection is set with charset='utf8'. Why Columnstore? If we’re looking for a subset of columns from one or a few rows, given the right indexes, SQL Server can do a superlative job of providing an answer. If we’re asking a question which by design needs to hit lots of rows—DW, reporting, aggregations, grouping, scans, etc., SQL Server has never had a good mechanism—until columnstore. Columnstore indexes were introduced in SQL Server 2012. However, they're still largely unknown. Some adoption blockers existed; yet columnstore was nonetheless a game changer for many apps.  In SQL Server 2014, potential blockers have been largely removed & they're going to profoundly change the way we interact with our data.  The purpose of this series is to share the performance benefits of columnstore & documenting columnstore is a compelling reason to upgrade to SQL Server 2014. App: MSIT SONAR Aggregations At MSIT, performance & configuration data is captured by SCOM. We archive much of the data in a partitioned data warehouse table in SQL Server 2012 for reporting via an application called SONAR.  By definition, this is a primary use case for columnstore—report queries requiring aggregation over large numbers of rows.  New data is refreshed each night by an automated table partitioning mechanism—a best practices scenario for columnstore. The Win Compared to performance using classic indexing which resulted in the expected query plan selection including partition elimination vs. SQL Server 2012 nonclustered columnstore, query performance increased significantly.  Logical reads were reduced by over a factor of 50; both CPU & duration improved by factors of 20 or more.  Other than creating the columnstore index, no special modifications or tweaks to the app or databases schema were necessary to achieve the performance improvements.  Existing nonclustered indexes were rendered superfluous & were deleted, thus mitigating maintenance challenges such as defragging as well as conserving disk capacity. Details The table provides the raw data & summarizes the performance deltas. Summary For DW, reports, & other BI workloads, columnstore often provides significant performance enhancements relative to conventional indexing.  I have documented here, the first in a series of reports on columnstore implementations, results from an initial implementation at MSIT in which logical reads were reduced by over a factor of 50; both CPU & duration improved by factors of 20 or more.  Subsequent features in this series document performance enhancements that are even more significant.
