• Writing a Virtual Printer in .NET

- by David Osborn
I'm looking to create a virtual printer that passes data to my .NET application. I want to then create an installer that installs both the printer and the .NET application. It would we really nice to be able to write it all in C#, but I have a feeling that this will require a printer driver to be written is unmanaged code. Does anyone know of a fairly clean tutorial or example of how to do this?

• How to Instantiate ObjectFrame in VB.NET

- by Suman
I am trying to reach methods and properties of ObjectFrame through vb.net. But when I declared this as Dim objOLEObject As ObjectFrame and then trying to instantiate it as ObjOLEObject = New ObjectFrame it shows error like: "429: Retriveing the COM class factory for component with CLSID {3806e95d-e47c-11-cd-8701-00aa003f0f7} failed due to the following error: 80040154" To resolve this we re-installed both MS-Office 2003 and VS-2005, but could not get the solution. Could anyone suggest me how to declare and use this in vb.net? Thanks.

• Default .NET exception handler

- by ajs410
So the other day my C# application crashed. Usually, with a .NET application, if you have an unhandled exception you get a nice error message with a stack trace. However, this time, I got a different dialog that just told me there was an error and offered to attach a Debugger, but there was no stack trace in the dialog and the machine it was running on had no debugger installed. What gives? Why don't I see the default .NET exception handler?

• Convert between python array and .NET Array

- by dungema
I have a python method that returns a Python byte array.array('c'). Now, I want to copy this array using System.Runtime.InteropServices.Marshal.Copy. This method however expects a .NET array. import array from System.Runtime.InteropServices import Marshal bytes = array.array('c') bytes.append('a') bytes.append('b') bytes.append('c') Marshal.Copy(bytes, dest, 0, 3) Is there a way to make this work without copying the data? If not, how do I convert the data in the Python array to the .NET array?

• .NET Automated Build Server Software

- by KevinDeus
What good .NET Continous Integration and Automated Build and Deployment Software is out there? We have been using CruiseControl.NET but it is really starting to get on our nerves with the amount of maintenance it needs. We're looking for something that virtually anybody can manage, and it would also really be good to not have to write a NAnt build script. We use Subversion for Source Controll

• Executing Password Change over Ruby Net-SSH

- by tesmar
Hi all, I am looking to execute a password change over Net-ssh and this code seems to hang: Net::SSH.start(server_ip, "user", :verbose => :debug ) do |session| session.process.popen3("ls") do |input, output, error| ["old_pass","test", "test"].each do |x| input.puts x end end end I know the connection works because using a simple exec I can get the output from ls on the remote server, but this hangs. Any ideas? The last message from debug is that the public key succeeded.

• .NET Regex Instance Caching

- by jvenema
I've read this article, which describes how instance vs static methods get called with a .NET regex. However, what about if the instance itself is static? Does anyone know if .NET does any sort of caching that could potentially cause a memory leak?

• What .NET framework "shipped" with Windows XP

- by Jani
Could you tell me what .NET framework installed by default on Windows XP system? Because I wanted to write a C# application that does not require anything else to be installed. If none is there any way not to force users to download .net framework (for example 3.5) but install it?

• Field symbol and Data reference in SAP-ABAP

- by PDP-21
If we compare field symbol and data refernece with that of the pointer in C i concluded that :- In C language, Say we declare a variable "var" type "Integer" with default value "5". The variable "var" will be stored some where in the memory and say the memory address which holds this variable is "1000". Now we define a pointer "ptr" and this pointer is assigned to our variable. So, "&ptr" will be "1000" and " *ptr " will be 5. Lets comapre the above situation in SAP ABAP. Here we declare a Field symbol "FS" and assign that to the variable "var". Now my question is what "FS" holds ? I have searched this rigorously in the internet but found out many ABAP consultants have the opinion that FS holds the address of the variable i.e. 1000. But that is wrong. While debugging i found out that fs holds only 5. So fs (in ABAP) is equivalent to *ptr (in C). Please correct me if my understanding is wrong. Now lets declare a data reference "dref" and another filed symbol "fsym" and after creating the data reference we assign the same to field symbol . Now we can do operations on this field symbol. So the difference between data refernec and field symbol is :- in case of field symbol first we will declare a variable and assign it to a field symbol. in case of data reference first we craete a data reference and then assign that to field symbol. Then what is the use of data reference? The same functionality we can achive through field symbol also.

• CruiseControl.NET : Sending email using SVN username to ActiveDirectory mapping

- by matthewpe
Is it possible to configure CruiseControl.NET to send an email to the user(s) that did modifications to a broken build by mapping their SVN username to the corresponding Active-Directory alias (hence retrieving the correct, updated email address). Our SVN server is set-up to allow users of a certain Active-Directory group to read and commit changes: I don't want to have to maintain the CruiseControl.NET config every time a user gets added to our Programmers group in Active-Directory. Thanks a lot!

• .NET Framework versions

- by PintSizedCat
I've had a little search and I was wondering if there is back compatibility for the .NET framework. The real question is, if there's a program that uses .NET Framework 1.1, can I install 3.5 and be done, or do I have to install 1.1 and then if something uses 3.5 I have to install 3.5 as well?

• filtering dates in a data view webpart when using webservices datasource

- by Patrick Olurotimi Ige
I was working on a data view web part recently and i had to filter the data based on dates.Since the data source was web services i couldn't use the Offset which i blogged about earlier. When using web services to pull data in sharepoint designer you would have to use xpath. So for example this is the soap that populates the rows<xsl:variable name="Rows" select="/soap:Envelope/soap:Body/ddw1:GetListItemsResponse/ddw1:GetListItemsResult/ddw1:listitems/rs:data/z:row/>But you would need to add some predicate [] and filter the date nodes. So you can do something like this (marked in red)<xsl:variable name="Rows" select="/soap:Envelope/soap:Body/ddw1:GetListItemsResponse/ddw1:GetListItemsResult/ddw1:listitems/rs:data/z:row[ddwrt:FormatDateTime(string(@ows_Created),1033,'yyyyMMdd') >= ddwrt:FormatDateTime(string(substring-after($fd,'#')),1033,'yyyyMMdd')]"/>For the filtering to work you need to have the date formatted above as yyyyMMdd.One more thing you must have noticed is the $fd variable. This variable is created by me creating a calculated column in the list so something like this [Created]-2So basically that the xpath is doing is get me data only when the Created date is greater than or equal to the Created date -2 which is 2 date less than the created date. Also not that when using web services in sharepoint designer and try to use the default filtering you won't get to see greater tha or less than in the option list comparison.:(Hope this helps.

• JSON parsing using JSON.net

- by vbNewbie
I am accessing the facebook api and using the json.net library (newtonsoft.json.net) I declare a Jobject to parse the content and look for the specific elements and get their values. Everything works fine for the first few but then I get this unexplained nullexception error " (Object reference not set to an instance of an object) Now I took a look at the declaration but cannot see how to change it. Any help appreciated: Dim jobj as JObject = JObject.Parse(responseData) Dim message as string = string.empty message = jobj("message").tostring The error occurs at the last line above.

• Stick with MFC or go to .Net

- by Jon Drnek
We have a largish MFC app that is our main product. This app is being actively developed and there are no plans to stop development. I am new to windows development, but I get the impression that MFC is dead and all the new growth and enhancements are in .net. Is this view accurate? What criteria should we consider when deciding if we should convert this application to .net. Here I'm asking why. I have asked the how question here

• .NET equivalent of httpunit

- by Matt
I will openly admit that I fall on the side of Test Driven Development. I have run into a situation that I would like to test, but I haven't found a good way to do so. I have been working in ASP.NET MVC and I would like to test that the parts of code that I am putting into the view layer (and I know that I need to keep that as minimal as possible). I am looking for an equivalent in .NET to httpunit in Java or something similar.
