• What's the easiest way to sort an EF4 EntityCollection<T>?

  I'd love to add some sorting to an EntityCollection that is bound to an ItemsControl (in xaml). I'd also like to do it as simply as possible. It appears that this is not possible. If I wrap the collection in a "sorted" version of the collection property within the Entity I lose collection change notifications. I can't use a CollectionViewSource because the entity collection's BindingListCollectionView does not support sorting for some goddamned reason (note: I've seen the blog post with the "dirty" hack to get around this, so please don't answer with that kthx). Is there a simple (couple lines of xaml, couple lines of code, whatever) way to achieve this??

• Client authentication with RubyLDAP ldap

  Hello all, I'm trying to implement a feature that uses LDAP over SSL (SSL, not TLS), it needs to connect to a SSL-enabled LDAP server (i.e OpenLDAP), bind and then do any additional queries. It also needs to support client-authentication, and this is where things get tricky: The client is a web application written in Ruby, and we are using RubyLDAP (so far we have used it for non-SSL ldap stuff with great success). My question is: Is there a way to load a client certificate and send its data over the wire to the LDAP server when doing a LDAP::SSLConn? I haven't found anything obvious on the API docs (http://ruby-ldap.sourceforge.net/rdoc/) nor while googling around. I know I that I can prevent the server from asking for a certificate by putting the following on slapd.conf (OpenLDAP): TLSVerifyClient never However, this is not an option here. Thanks, Marcelo.

  I'm looking for options that allow very high-level web site development with these special characteristics: not requiring the user to program in a complex programming language not requiring the user to use GUI-like administration areas allow the user to "program" in a lightweight markup language The last point is not only about look and structure of the output but also about creating simple dynamic output. For example: listing pages fetching the content of other pages doing a site search and displaying its output dynamically show or hide parts of the page depending on login status Of course, I am not expecting a solution that provides the same possibilities like a Ruby, Python or PHP web framework. Rather I am looking for support of the "basics" that are common for web sites. Until now, I have found only one piece of software that fulfills these requirements but while it's free, it's not open source: BoltWire at http://www.boltwire.com/. Being open source is required.

• HTML5 video on iPad

  I have a dynamic video gallery and it works great on a computer. When moving to an iPad, the video starts loading and it shows the cannot play icon. Instead of this I'd rather the video not show until it's ready to play. I have tried to add events listeners for "canplaythrough" and "canplay" and when they occur for the video to fade in then play. • Why a very good PHP framework - Qcodo (or Qcubed - its branch) - is so unpopular?

  I am wondering why this framework (QCodo) is almost forgotten and totally unpopular. I've started using it a few years ago and it is the only thing that keeps me with PHP. Yeah ... its development is stuck (that's why there is now more active branch Qcubed) but it is still very good piece of software. Its main advantages: Event driven (something like asp.net) no spaghetti code Powerful code generation good ORM follows DRY very simple AJAX support is fun to write Since then I wanted to be trendy and checked Django but I cannot write normal request-based web application (it just doesn't feel right). Don't believe? chess.com is written with it and surely there are plenty others. My 2 questions are: Have you heard of it (PHP people)? • iphone OS 3.1.3 requires snow leopard upgrade

  itunes asked me to upgrade my iphone's OS to 3.1.3, so I complied naively. then xcode told me that the latest iphone OS version it could support was 3.1.2. So I went to download a new version from https://developer.apple.com/iphone/index.action#downloads, xcode 3.2.2 with iphone SDK. but when i went to install that, i was told I needed snow leopard 10.6.2 or later. so I'm just making sure that I am not misinterpreting anything when I say that, given that it is impossible to downgrade iphone OS versions without jailbreaking, I need to install a new version of the OS just so I can resume testing apps on my iphone?

  Hello. I am having a real headache trying to set a node's local position to match a given world position. I was given a solution but, AFAICS, it only takes into account orientation and position but NOT scaling : node_new_local_position = node_parent.derivedOrientation().Inverse() * ( world_position_to_match - node_parent.derivedPosition() ); The node in question is a child of node_parent; node_parent local and derived properties (orientation, position and scaling) are known, as well as its full matrix transform. All the positions are 3d vectors; the orientation is a quaternion; the full transform is a 4x4 matrix. Could someone please help me to modify the solution to support scaling in the node hierarchy?   i just purchased a new laptop and had some issues with it... I called tech support and they had me run this command in cmd prompt by right clicking the cmd icon and selecting "run as administrator" with root C:\windows\system32: "Net user administrator /active:no" after it was determined that it didn't fix the issue we ran this code "Net user administrator /active:yes" i then rebooted..and was asked for my windows login for my user account "Rees" as usual.. however ALL my settings where gone (including my desktop files) as though it was the first time I booted up. WHAT in the world happened with this command?? I desperately NEED my user accounts and files back to how they were!! (running windows 7) Please help!

• How to superpose two GwtCanvas ?

  Hi, I'm trying to superpose two GwtCanvas (which use an Html5 canvas). I am able to get this effect by using an absolute panel. But by doing this, I can't get my object to fill my panel. I would like to this so I can do a whiteboard in GWT. So far, I'm pretty advance but I would like to have multiple canvas overlay to support undo or preview. For example, if we draw a rectangle, it would be good to preview it as we move the mouse. I have found a javascript tutorial to do this : ex: http://dev.opera.com/articles/view/html5-canvas-painting/ There is a javascript example, but I'm not sure how to do the bridge between GWT and JavaScript. Any ideas ?

• iphone/ipad orientation handling

  This is more of a general question for people to provide me guidance on, basically Im learning iPad/iPhone development and have finally come across the multi-orientation support question. I have looked up a fair amount of doco, and my book "Beginning iPhone 3 Development" has a nice chapter on it. But my question is this, if I was to programatically change my controls (or even use different views for each orientation) how on earth to people maintain their code base? I can just imagine so many issues with spaghetti code/thousands of "if" checks all over the place, that it would drive me nuts to make one small change to the UI arrangement. Does anyone have experience handling this issue? What is a nice way to control it? Thanks a lot Mark

  I have some hierarchical data - each entry has an id and a (nullable) parent entry id. I want to retrieve all entries in the tree under a given entry. This is in a SQL Server 2005 database. I am querying it with LINQ to SQL in C# 3.5. LINQ to SQL does not support Common Table Expressions directly. My choices are to assemble the data in code with several LINQ queries, or to make a view on the database that surfaces a CTE. Which option (or another option) do you think will perform better when data volumes get large? Is SQL Server 2008's HierarchyId type supported in Linq to SQL?

• Chaining CSS classes in IE6 - Trying to find a jQuery solution?

  Right, perhaps I ask the impossible? I consider myself fairly new to Javscript and jQuery, but that being said, I have written some fairly complex code recently so I am definitely getting there... however I am now possed with a rather interesting issue at my current freelance contract. The previous web coder has taken a Grid-960 approach to the HTML and as a result has used chained classes to style many of the elements. The example below is typical of what can be found in the code: <div class='blocks four-col-1 orange highlight'>Some content</div> And in the css there will be different declarations for: (not actual css... but close enough) .blocks {margin-right:10px;} .orange {background-image:url(someimage.jpg);} .highlight {font-weight:bold;} .four-col-1 {width:300px;} and to make matters worse... this is in the CSS: .blocks.orange.highlight {background-colour:#dd00ff;} Anyone not familiar with this particular bug can read more on it here: http://www.ryanbrill.com/archives/multiple-classes-in-ie/ it is very real and very annoying. Without wanting to go into the merrits of not chaining classes (I told them this, but it is no longer feasible to change their approach... 100 hand coded pages into a 150 page website, no CMS... sigh) and without the luxury of being able to change the way these blocks are styled... can anyone advise me on the complexity and benefits between any of my below proposed approaches or possible other options that would adequately solve this problem. Potential Solution 1 Using conditional comments I am considering loading a jquery script only for IE6 that: Reads the class of all divs in a certain section of the page and pushes to an array creates empty boxes off screen with only one of the classes applied at a time Reads the applied CSS values for each box Re-applies these styles to the individual box, somehow bearing in mind the order in which they are called and overwriting conflicting instructions as required Potential Solution 2 read the class of all divs in a certain section of the page and push to an array Scan the document for links to style sheets Ajax grab the stylesheets and traverse looking for matching names to those in class array Apply styles as needed Potential Solution 3 Create an IE6 only stylesheet containing the exact style to be applied as a unique name (ie: class='blocks orange highlight' becomes class='blocks-orange-highlight') Traverse the document in IE6 and convert all spaces in class declarations to hyphens and reapply classes based on new style name Summary: Solution 1 allows the people at this company to apply any styles in the future and the script will adjust as needed. However it does not allow for the chained style to be added, only the individual style... it is also processor intensive and time consuming, but also the most likely to be converted into a plugin that could be used the world over Solution 2 is a potential nightmare to code. But again will allow for an endless number of updates without breaking Solution 3 will require someone at the companty to hardcode the new styles every time they make a change, and if they don't, IE6 will break. Ironically the site, whilst needing to conform to IE6 in a limited manner, does not need to run wihtout javascript (they've made the call... have JS or go away), so consider all jQuery and JS solutions to be 'game on'. Did I mention how much i hate IE6? Anyway... any thoughts or comments would be appreciated. I will continue to develop my own solution and if I discover one that can be turned into a jQuery plugin I will post it here in the comments. Regards, Mike.

  I am trying to understand how Facebook's chat feature receives messages without continuously poling the server. Firebug shows me a single GET XmlHttpRequest continuously sitting there, waiting for a response from the server. After 5 minutes, this never timed out. How are they preventing timeout? An AJAX request can just sit there like that indefinitely, waiting for a response? Can I do this with JSONRequest? I see this at json.org: JSONRequest is designed to support duplex connections. This permits applications in which the server can asynchronously initiate transmissions. This is done by using two simultaneous requests: one to send and the other to receive. By using the timeout parameter, a POST request can be left pending until the server determines that it has timely data to send. Or is there another way to let an AJAX call just sit there, waiting, besides using JSONRequest?

The ActiveX FileSystemObject does not support UTF-8, it seems. I tried UTF-16 encoding the text first but the result was garbled. What is a workaround?

• Acer aspire 5735z wireless not working after upgrade to 11.10

  I cant get my wifi card to work at all after upgrading to 11.10 Oneiric. I'm not sure where to start to fix this. Ive tried using the additional drivers tool but this shows that no additional drivers are needed. Before my upgrade I had a drivers working for the Rt2860 chipset. • Relying on nhibernate's second level cache vs pushing objects into the session

  I have some big entities which are frequently accessed in the same session. For example, in my application there is a reporting page which consist of dynamically generated chart images. For each chart image on this page, the client makes requests to corresponding controller and the controller generates images using some entities. I can either use asp.net's session dictionary for "caching" those entities or rely on nhibernate's second level cache support with using cached queries for example. What is your opinion? By the way I will use shared hosting, is nhibernate's second level cache hosting friendly? Thanks.

A GUI and integration with Clang for static code analysis or git for version control would be convenient, but aren't necessary. I would ideally use two editors: one feature-filled IDE and one with a small memory footprint, but editors like jEdit, Geany, Diakonos, nano, etc. don't satisfy many of my needs, which include: Good support for refactoring and code completion. • Incomplete results with Turkish characters in Indexing Service

  Finally I get to post my i's and I's as promised... I've found that MS Indexing Service returns incomplete results when searching for documents with Turkish content. It seems to choke especially regarding the (incorrectly-named) 4I problem. Apparently, MS has fixed this problem with a Windows 2000 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/325333 service pack, but the bug seems to be resurrected with Windows XP & 2003. Anybody uses Indexing Service in their line of work? Similar problems with other non-English locales? Any solutions?

I googled up for WPF and i get very old links which are 3 years old back when WPF was known as Avalon. They may not be of any use in V4.0.
