• LightScythe Creates Huge Light Paintings

  Earlier this year we showed you how an LED POV staff could be used to visualize network data. This build takes it to another level and allows you to imprint entire words and images into photos. Gavin, a hardware hacker from Sydney, built an open-source POV (persistence of vision) staff after the Wi-Fi visualizer inspired him to begin playing with large POV builds. He built his POV staff using LED strips, wireless controllers, and a laptop to send the signals at the proper intervals to the staff.   Wired has article that western games are seen as "bad games". Why is that? If that is true, than what do they see as bad? This article, i think, is biased towards western games: “The other day,” says Q Entertainment’s Mielke, “I was having lunch with a friend and I said, ‘Have you ever played StarCraft?’ And he said, ‘What’s StarCraft?’ Sometimes it’s just really shocking that their gaming vocabulary isn’t as extensive as it could be. • How do I get Catalyst 11.10 with ATI Radeon Mobility HD 5470 working on an HP DV7?

  I have a HP DV7 with a HD 5470 512M card. Installation of the Catalyst 11.10 is repeatedly failing on a fresh install of Ubuntu 11.10. Catalyst 11.8 proprietary drivers were working well with Ubuntu 11.04. I have tried installing directly from the .run and generating the distribution specific packages. Nothing has worked. After installation which goes through successfully, the system hangs on reboot after the flashing dots. I have to replace the /etc/X11/xorg.conf to get the X working. I have followed instructions as per the http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Main_Page wiki. Request for support to ATI/AMD gives the response that this model is unsupported on Linux by HP :). Updated 14-Nov I have reverted back to the open source drivers which work well enough for me.

• bad practice to create a print friendly page to remove the use of pdfs?

  the company I work for has a one page invoice that uses the library tcpdf. they wanted to do some design changes that I found are just incredibly difficult for setting up in .pdf format. using html/css I could easily create the page and have it print very nicely, but I have a feeling that I am over looking something. is it a good practice to set up a page just for printing? and if not, is it at least better than putting out a ugly .pdf? I could also use the CSS inline so that if they wanted to download it and open it they could.

• Ubuntu Gnome 14.04 - 100% CPU usage alternating between cores

  I've noticed my Ubuntu Gnome 14.04 has been getting a bit sluggish lately - things like Gnome Shell overview animation are jerky where they were lightning fast, Elder Scrolls Online is stuttering and dropping to low FPS where I previously had a solid 50-60 fps. Out of interest I looked at the CPU History, and when running nothing but the system monitor, I was getting this: That was 15 minutes ago. The 100% load seemed to be alternating between the cores. PC specs: i3 2130 processor. 8gb DDR3 RAM. ASUS P8-Z77M motherboard. Samsung 128gb SSD I've been trying to reproduce the problem, and while I'm not getting the 100% any more at idle, the system monitor is showing an average load of about 20-30%, that's with just Chrome and the System Monitor open. Oddly, if I touch nothing, it'll average out to about 20% - if I start moving the mouse around and do some typing, it's closer to 40%. Is this normal? Any help appreciated, I wouldn't even know where to start here..

• Looking for full web based booking system

  I've searched around here but could not find any booking system that would suit my need. I hope maybe you can help me out. I've already seen question #11379 over here. Solutions provided there are not helping and scripts not interesting. I'm looking for a booking system that support infinite number of hotels/rooms/pricingschemes. There should be unlimited number of hotel owner/users, who can access control panel and set availability for their hotel. Or create seasonal prices and adjust them. I should be able to have 15% booking fee paid through credit cart. I can work on integration with my system, it just needs to have correct APi/functionality to support this. I love wordpress so if there are some nice plugins for that, I'm open for suggestions. But this is not a must. It should be php/mysql based as I'm not good at anything else :)

• Terminal shows menu in panel but window is missing

  I upgraded from 10.10. Then everything worked well except very important one -- my terminal. I try to open my terminal, but no any window popup. I press alt+tab and the windows switcher appears in which there is the terminal. I switch to it, however, nothing happens. I can see the word terminal in my top bar. When I move cursor on it I see the file edit view and so on. But they are useless unless I can find my terminal window. I have no problem with chrome, firefox, eclipse, ubuntu software center, pidgin and many more applications. But without terminal, I'm using a disabled linux.

  Hi, I really really want to find this package. Because after I saw the youtube clip I realized it's just one of those things I must have done before I die. This tutorial would be great if the repository were online. My question is: Where can I find the file, and how can I install it without changing my current desktop? The project was called "project looking glass" and was released in 2007.   I have tried several different ways to achieve reading my amazon purchased e-books on ubuntu without success. Maybe i'm trying to do the impossible? Is there support for kindle-on-pc on ubuntu 12? If so please be so kind as to share with me how to. Please don't suggest kindle cloud, unless you know how to copy paste from kindle cloud... The books seemed to be encoded so that caliber cannot open them/convert them so unless i misunderstand thats out to. new install of ubuntu 12.04, i don't own a kindle so i just need a viewer

• Opening a Gtk.Window that covers Launcher and Panel

  I am trying to create a GtkWindow that would be on top of all the windows. This includes Unity's Launcher and Panel. I am working on Kazam screen recorder and one of the options of the program is recording an arbitrary area of the screen. For this, I open a GtkWindow and let user resize it and move it around the screen to the desired location. The problem is when user wants to resize the window over the Panel (or Launcher). It can't be done. It seems that window manager is preventing this. I can move the window under panel and launcher if I ALT-drag it, but the problem because area selection window stays below Launcher and Panel. Any ideas are more than welcome.

• Joomla Backend running slow on localhost

  I made a local backup of a Joomla site a few months ago to test changes before updating the live site. Everything worked fine. Today I checked the local version after a while but when I open the backend (/administrator) it takes a while until the site is loaded. I tried out different things and accidently disconnected my Network Connection. After that everything loads as fast as before. But when I connect the Network Connection the problem reappears. I am running Joomla 1.5.14 on XAMPP 1.7.0.

  EDIT: I don't think this is a duplicate... I ask for a specific feature, which is Facebook integration. I know this question existed, but I need something more specific than that. That one doesn't outline what I need. What is the best/most compatible forum software which features almost complete integration with Facebook? The main feature I ask is the Facebook Connect feature (user could use Facebook account to register). But it would be more perfect if other Facebook features could be integrated to. Something like, subscribe thread which appears to Facebook notifications, easy sharing to Facebook, etc. I have vBulletin, Invision Power Board, and SMF in my mind, but I'm open to more suggestions..

• VMPlayer does not flush all outputs to serial port

  I am debugging a Linux kernel in the VMPlayer on Ubuntu 12.04 configured a serial port to a file to see the debug information. However, each time when the kernel panics, only the backtrace stack were printed out instead of all the booting messages. This does not happend on VMPlayer Fusion. • Netbeans IDE did work after installation, but doesn't start after restart.

  i installed Netbeans on Ubuntu 11.10 following these instructions: http://pasindudps.blogspot.com/2011/10/installing-netbeans-ide-in-ubuntu-1110.html. It worked perfectly fine (creating projects, open projects, compile, run...) but after restarting netbeans started normally and it is shown as a running application in unity-panel but I can't access the programm. I uninstalled and reinstalled it, it worked once but failed after restart. Has anyone an idea what might be the problem here? Thanks in advance. Regards

  I made a game, and I am currently making a game engine. I want them both to be completely free and open source. What license should I choose? I was reading a bit on GPL, but that seems to be more suited for system code and libraries, AFAIK, as it doesn't permit the use of code for proprietorial software - which, in turn, implies that the code can be used in the first place. I can see that, obviously, game engines can be considered libraries, and therefor be used, but what about game code? Is there an alternative to GPL?

  I'm developing a commercial application that largely depends on the functionality of a library that will be developed with it. I'd like to open-source this library, because it offers functionality that is not found elsewhere and can be useful in other applications. However, I will also use it in my own commercial application. I don't want to publish the source of the main application, but it is definitely not a derived work (think of calculator app using GPL licensed library to calculate sine). And if someone else commercially uses the library, I want to require them to publish any changes made. Is the GPL license suitable for this or is LGPL perhaps what I need?

  first of all, I want to create shell script to start/stop downloads in torrent client. I don't need CLI but if you know how I can do that with CLI using shell script then it is okay.   I am a front-end developer. For many experiements I do I need to have a server that talks JSON with my client side app. Normally that server is a simple server that response to my POSTs and GETs. For example I need to setup a server that saves, modifies and read data from a "library" database like this: POST /books create a book GET /book/:id gets a book and so on... What is the fastest to set up and easiest technology stack for database and server in this case? I am open to use Ruby, Nodejs and anything that do the job fast and easy.   I have seen lots of articles but none really help me. That is because I want to use dapper as a DAL. Should I create repositories with special functions? Like getStaffActive()? If I use repositories I can implement with dapper-extension a generic crud I have no idea how to handle database connection. Where to open the connection? If I do this at every function then how am I supposed to use transaction scope? Somehow the repositories I work with should share a connection in order transaction to work. But how to do this? Openning connection in BLL? If I use queries and execute them directly then still the same thing.
