• Porting Symbian C++ to Android NDK

  I've been given some Symbian C++ code to port over for use with the Android NDK. The code has lots of Symbian specific code in it and I have very little experience of C++ so its not going very well. The main thing that is slowing me down is trying to figure out the alternatives to use in normal C++ for the Symbian specific code. At the minute the compiler is throwing out all sorts of errors for unrecognised types. From my recent research these are the types that I believe are Symbian specific: TInt, TBool, TDesc8, RSocket, TInetAddress, TBuf, HBufc, RPointerArray Changing TInt and TBool to int and bool respectively works in the compiler but I am unsure what to use for the other types? Can anyone help me out with them? Especially TDesc, TBuf, HBuf. Also Symbian has a two phase contructor using NewL and NewLc But would changing this to a normal C++ constructor be ok? Finally Symbian uses the clean up stack to help eliminate memory leaks I believe, would removing the clean up stack code be acceptable, I presume it should be replaced with try/catch statements?

• AJAX/JSONP Question. Access id denied using IE while requesting corss domain.

  Ok, Here we go. I have already searched the Stack for the answer i have found some useful info but i want to clear up some more things. I also search the net for the answer but no real help. I have worked with some api (yelp, ouside.in). In yelp i use to inject the script to head with the url request to the api with a callback funcion. I worked fine in all browsers. But while using outside.in api when i call the url the callback in not working. In yelp they have a url field can be used like that callback=callbackfuncion so the callback will automatically called. But in outside.in there is not such field available. Is there are any standard command for callback function which will work regardless of any server/api? I also tried a standard ajax request using jQuery $.ajax() function. It worked for my local pc for both IE and other browser but did not working in IE showing the error: access denied, other borwser seems ok. Firebug in my FF also don't notice any errors. • Qt: QStackedWidget solution

  I'm building a Qt application that have about 30 different views (QWidgets). My idea is to use a QStackedWidget to make it easy to switch between the different views in the application. I have two different solutions of how to implement this and use as little memory as possible when the user navigates through the application. Solution 1: Everytime I need to show a view I check if it is already in the stack. (The user might open the same view many times, maybe a view showing an item from a database). If the view is in the stack already it doesn't need to be created again and I can just show the view. The good thing with this solution is that I reuse the views (widgets) so they only need to be created once. This is good as the UI and other stuff should look the same everytime the user show a view, so why not reuse it? The problem with this solution is that every view has childrens. Maybe an object, a QList with objects or other things. A good thing with Qt is that you can use the parent-children mechanism so that the children will be deleted when the parent is deleted. As I never delete the parent (view) I need to handle this myself as the children might need to be deleted from different times when the view is shown. (Maybe the view show a list with objects and the list should be updated from a database each time the view is shown.) Solution 2: Everytime I need to show a QWidget I create a new one and show it. When it is not shown anymore, I delete it from memory. This is a quite easy solution. And as I delete the views when they are not shown both the view and it's children should be deleted from memory so it shouldn't increase memory, am I right? Which one of the solutions do you recommend?

• Doesn't this defeat the whole purpose of having read-only properties?

  I know how to use properties and I understand that they implicitly call underlying get and set accessors, depending on whether we are writing to or reading from a property. static void Main(string[] args) { A a = new A(); (a.b).i = 100; } class A { private B _b = new B(); public B b { get { return _b; } } } class B { public int i; } What code (a.b).i = 100; essentially does is that first property’s get accessor returns a reference to an object _b, and once we have this reference, we are able to access _b’s members and change their values. Thus, in our example, having read only property only prevents outside code from changing the value of a reference variable _b, but it doesn’t prevent outside code from accessing _b’s members. So it seems that property can only detect whether we are trying to read from or write to a variable ( in our case variable _b ) located on the stack, while it’s not able to detect whether we’re trying to also write to members of an object to which the variable on the stack ( assuming this variable is of reference type ) points to. a) But doesn’t that defeat the whole purpose of having read-only properties? Wouldn’t it be more effective if properties had the ability to also detect whether we’re trying to access members of an object returned by get accessor( assuming backing field is of a reference type )? thank you

• View Controller Question

  First off I'm new at programming. I'm creating an app with one navigation bar controller. The app is pretty basic except for a quiz section that is comprised of 12 xibs. As the users takes the quiz a new xib is pushed onto the stack. I want to create a button that takes the user back to the home screen if they do not want to complete the quiz. The back button takes them to the previous xib which could be 11 deep. Is it possible to dismiss the modal views and reload the rootView controller? • Tools for debugging when debugger can't get you there?

  I have a fairly complex (approx 200,000 lines of C++ code) application that has decided to crash, although it crashes a little differently on a couple of different systems. The trick is that it doesn't crash or trap out in debugger. It only crashes when the application .EXE is run independently (either the debug EXE or the release EXE - both behave the same way). When it crashes in the debug EXE, and I get it to start debugging, the call stack is buried down into the windows/MFC part of things, and isn't reflecting any of my code. Perhaps I'm seeing a stack corruption of some sort, but I'm just not sure at the moment. My question is more general - it's about tools and techniques. I'm an old programmer (C and assembly language days), and a relative newcomer (couple/few years) to C++ and Visual Studio (2003 for this projecT). Are there tricks or techniques anyone's had success with in tracking down crashing issues when you cannot make the software crash in a debugger session? Stuff like permission issues, for example? The only thing I've thought of is to start plugging in debug/status messages to a logfile, but that's a long, hard way to go. Been there, done that. Any better suggestions? Am I missing some tools that would help? Is VS 2008 better for this kind of thing? Thanks for any guidance. Some very smart people here (you know who you are!). cheers.

• Variable Scoping in a method and its persistence in C++

  Consider the following public method that adds an integer variable to a vector of ints(private member) in a class in C++. KoolMethod() { int x; x = 10; KoolList.Add(x); } Vector<int>KoolList; But is this a valid addition to a vector ??? Upon calling the method, it creates a local variable. The scope of this local variable ends the moment the execution control leaves the method. And since this local variable is allocated on a stack(on the method call), any member of KoolList points to an invalid memory location in deallocated stack which may or may not contain the expected value of x. Is this an accurate description of above mechanism ?? Is there a need for creating an int in heap storage using "new" operator everytime a value needs to be added to the vector like described below ????: KoolMethod() { int *x = new int(); *x = 10; KoolList.Add(x); } Vector<int*>KoolList;

• How can pointers to functions point to something that doesn't exist in memory yet? Why do prototypes have different addresses?

  To my knowledge, functions do not get added to the stack until run-time after they are called in the main function. So how can a pointer to a function have a function's memory address if it doesn't exist in memory? For example: using namespace std; #include <iostream> void func() { } int main() { void (*ptr)() = func; cout << reinterpret_cast<void*>(ptr) << endl; //prints 0x8048644 even though func never gets added to the stack } Also, this next question is a little less important to me, so if you only know the answer to my first question, then that is fine. But anyway, why does the value of the pointer ( the memory address of the function ) differ when I declare a function prototype and implement the function after main? In the first example, it printed out 0x8048644 no matter how many times I ran the program. In the next example, it printed out 0x8048680 no matter how many times I ran the program. • NHibernate: Collection was modified; enumeration operation may not execute

  Hi All, I'm currently struggling with this "Collection was modified; enumeration operation may not execute" issue. I have searched about this error message, and it's all related to the foreach statement. I do have the some foreach statements, but they are just simply representing the data. I did not using any remove or add inside the foreach statement. NOTE: The error randomly happens (about 4-5 times a day). The application is the MVC website. There are about 5 users operate this applications (about 150 orders a day). Could it be some another users modified the collection, and then occur this error? I have log4net setup and the settings can be found here Make sure that the controller has a parameterless public constructor I do have parameterless public constructor in AdminProductController Does anyone know why this happen and how to resolve this issue? A friend (Oskar) mentioned that "Theory: Maybe the problem is that your configuration and session factory is initialized on the first request after application restart. If a second request comes in before the first request is finished, maybe it will also try to initialize and then triggering this problem somehow." Many thanks. • How do I rotate only some views when working with a uinavigationcontroller as a tab of a uitabbarcon

  Here is a flow that I can not figure out how to work. ( when I state (working) it means that in that current state the rules for orientation for that view are working correctly) First View: TableView on the stack of a UINavigationController that is a tab of UITabBarController. TableView is only allowed to be portrait. (working) When you rotate the TableView to landscape a modal comes up with a custom UIView that is like a coverflow (which i'll explain the problem there in a moment). A Selection made on tableview pushes a UIScrollview on to the stack. UIScrollView is allowed all orientations. (working) When UIScrollView is in landscape mode and the user hits back they are taken to the custom UIView that is like the coverflow and only allows landscape. The problem is here. Because the UIScrollView allows full rotation it permitted the TableView to rotate as well to landscape. I have a method attached to a notification "UIDeviceOrientationDidChangeNotification" that checks to see if the custom view is the current controller and if it is and if the user has rotated back to portrait I need to pop the custom view and show the table view. The table view has to rotate back to portrait, which really is okay as long as the user doesn't see it. When I create custom animations it works pretty good except for some odd invisible black box that seems to rotate with the device right before I fade out the customview to the tableview. Further inorder to ensure that my tableview will rotate to portrait I have to allow the customview to support all orientations because the system looks to the current view (in my code) as to whether or not that app is allowed to rotate to a certain orientation. Because of this I many proposed solutions will show the customview rotating to portrait as the table view comes back to focus. My other problem is very similar. If you are viewing the tableview and rotate the modalview of the customview is presented. When you make a selection on this view it pushes the UIScrollview onto the stack, but because the Tableview only supports portrait the UIScrollview comes in in portrait while the device is in landscape mode. How can I overcome these awful blocks? This is my current attempt: When it comes to working with UITabBarController the system really only cares what the tabbarcontroller has to say about rotation. Currently whenever a view loads it reports it supported orientations. It is responsible for poping the customview and showing the tableview. There are two different versions in place that originally were for two different versions of the SDK but both are pretty close to solutions. The reason the first is not supported on 3.0 is for some reason you can't have a view showing and then showen as a modal view. Not sure if that is a bug or a feature.   I've seen this question and this article on how to debug a native Java crash. The article is with respect to Windows. What are the equivalent debugging aids on Linux? Note: All I have is this crash log from a user in the field. I do not have access to the machine on which the crash occurred. Update: I am pretty sure the crash is due to JNI code we have. I never meant to imply that it was the JVM itself that was faulty.   Hey, I've been building a silverlight application and a WCF service for a while now and recently tried to host them in IIS7. I installed IIS7 on Windows Server 2008 R2 and added these two application to my default website. I am having a number of problems so im hoping one of you can help out... 1) The silverlight and WCF service applications do not work with pass-through authentication. I need to "connect as" the administrator server account when setting up the application. I read online that you should only need to use the "connect as" field when you are connecting to another computer. If i dont supply the admin credentials i get this error. Do i have to set up permissions somewhere else? HTTP Error 500.19 - Internal Server Error The requested page cannot be accessed because the related configuration data for the page is invalid. • Convert C++Builder AnsiString to std::string via boost::lexical_cast

  For a school assignment I have to implement a project in C++ using Borland C++ Builder. As the VCL uses AnsiString for all GUI Components I have to convert all of my std::strings to AnsiString for the sake of displaying. std::string inp = "Hello world!"; AnsiString outp(inp.c_str()); works of course but is a bit tedious to write and code duplication I want to avoid. As we use Boost in other contexts I decided to provide some helper functions go get boost::lexical_cast to work with AnsiString. Here is my implementation so far: std::istream& operator>>(std::istream& istr, AnsiString& str) { istr.exceptions(std::ios::badbit | std::ios::failbit | std::ios::eofbit); std::string s; std::getline(istr,s); str = AnsiString(s.c_str()); return istr; } In the beginning I got Access Violation after Access Violation but since I added the .exceptions() stuff the picture gets clearer. When the conversion is performed I get the following Exception: ios_base::eofbit set [Runtime Error/std::ios_base::failure] Does anyone have an idea how to fix it and can explain why the error occurs? My C++ experience is very limited. I've also debugged through the code, and in my GET changeUserPassword, the username is populating correctly: [email protected], so I'm thinking it's just the URL that's messing it up? If I type in the URL manually, the changeUserPassword view displays, however the password reset function does not work. An 'Object reference not set to an instance of an object' exception is thrown at the if (mu.ChangePassword(mu.ResetPassword(), password)) line. • How to get predecessor and successors from an adjacency matrix

  Hi I am am trying to complete an assignment, where it is ok to consult the online community. I have to create a graph class that ultimately can do Breadth First Search and Depth First Search. I have been able to implement those algorithms successfully however another requirement is to be able to get the successors and predecessors and detect if two vertices are either predecessors or successors for each other. I'm having trouble thinking of a way to do this.   Hi All I just setup up member ship roles and registration on my website with visual web developer using the tutorial on msdn.   I have been banging my head with this one more the two weeks, and still don't know what the problem is ( I can't narrow it down). The problem is the following. I have a solution with 3 project in it all written in c# and I with LINQ. One project is the main web site, the other is the data layer (communication with the database) and the third one is a custom little CMS. The problem is the following: On a hosting provider when I publish the site it all works perfectly, but this site was needed to be hosted on the client server so I needed to do that. But the problem is that I also needed to configure the client server, because they don't have an Administrator employed (I know, I know ;) ). For the first time I some how managed, to set it up but a problem appear. My main web site is working just as it suppose to be - it reads (communicates with) the database, but My CMS is not. It shows the first log in page, but after that when I try to log in it throws the following error: A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. So far I have tried the following: -setting time out on connection string to a higher value -configuration and after that turning off server firewall -checking the connection string over and over again (they are the same for all three projects and are saved in web.config) Important notes: I have tried executing the project from VS2008 with a connection string to the same database and the results are the same. That's why I think the problem is the SQL Server 2005 and not the IIS7. Any bit of information is more then welcomed.

Any suggestions as to what I should re-install will be much appreciated.

• Is there an effective tab manager for Google Chrome?

  I've tried a few extensions but I wasn't very satisfied, I'm basically looking for an extension that allows me to group sets of tabs in such a way that I'm able to quickly switch between the groups within the same window. That is to say, if I had 5 Wikipedia tabs and 5 Stack Exchange tabs, ideally I would create 2 groups, hide the tabs of one of them, and switch between the Wikipedia and Stack Exchange tabs back and forth as I need without leaving the same window (note that I'm not specifically looking for grouping by site, that was just a simplified example) Does an extension like this exist? PS: No, I don't actually have 5 Wikipedia tabs open while browsing Stack Exchange sites :-)
