    - by Troy Kitch
Join us, December 12 at 10am PT/1pm ET, to hear about a new Oracle product that monitors Oracle and non-Oracle database traffic, detects unauthorized activity including SQL injection attacks, and blocks internal and external threats from reaching the database. In addition, this new product collects and consolidates audit data from databases, operating systems, directories, and any custom template-defined source into a centralized, secure warehouse. This new enterprise security monitoring and auditing platform allows organizations to quickly detect and respond to threats with powerful real-time policy analysis, alerting and reporting capabilities. Based on proven SQL grammar analysis that ensures accuracy, performance, and scalability, organizations can deploy with confidence in any mode. • Vector reflect problem

    - by xdevel2000
    I'm testing some vector reflection and I want to check what happens when a ball collides with a paddle. So if I have: Vector2 velocity = new Vector2(-5, 2); position_ball += velocity; if (position_ball.X < 10) { Vector2 v = new Vector2(1,0); // or Vector2.UnitX velocity = Vector2.Reflect(velocity, v); } then, correctly, velocity is (5,2) after Reflect, but if I do: if (position_ball.X < 10) { Vector2 v = new Vector2(1,1); velocity = Vector2.Reflect(velocity, v); } then velocity is (1,8) and not (5, -2) that is the solution of reflection equation R = V - 2 * (V . N) Why is that?

  • How to reduce the time it takes to load my web game? [closed]

    - by Danial
I created a puzzle game with Unity and uploaded it to one server. This works fine, but I bought a new server and uploaded my game to it as well. There, the loading time is much longer. These are the servers: http://pinheadsinteractive.com/Mozzie/ (fast) http://operation-mozzie-free.com/ (slow) The Unity files are exactly the same from one server to the next. My client is dissatisfied with the new, slow loading time. So, how can I reduce the time my Unity game takes to load? Even in some cases they faced the problem that they could not load the game at all. For the the moment, I'm using an iframe on the new sever as a workaround, but the issue still remains unsolved.

  • Does Ubuntu 12.04 supports for B75 boards?

    - by rail02000
I want to build a new computer with Intel G840 CPU and Gigabyte B75M-D3H motherboard and install Ubuntu (or Kubuntu) 12.04 64bit on it. However, I'm worried about whether the chip is too new and whether that Linux Kernel now has support for it. According to the article [Phoronix] Intel Core i7 3770K Ivy Bridge Linux Performance Review ,the Linux kernel is ready to work on the chip. Existing Intel Sandy Bridge motherboards/chipsets are compatible with Ivy Bridge processors, but earlier this month Intel launched the new Panther Point chipsets that are already compatible with Linux too: the B75, H77, Z75, Z77, HM75, HM76, UM77, and HM77. But I didn't find further information or cases about running Ubuntu on the chip. So,is it OK to run Ubuntu on the board? Do I need to upgrade the kernel to a newer version (3.4 or 3.5 etc.) to get the system more smoothly? Or should I choose boards with H61 chip? Thank for your response!

  • StreamInsight 2.1 Released

    - by Roman Schindlauer
The wait is over—we are pleased to announce the release of StreamInsight 2.1. Since the release of version 1.2, we have heard your feedbacks and suggestions and based on that we have come up with a whole new set of features. Here are some of the highlights: A New Programming Model – A more clear and consistent object model, eliminating the need for complex input and output adapters (though they are still completely supported). This new model allows you to provision, name, and manage data sources and sinks in the StreamInsight server. Tight integration with Reactive Framework (Rx) – You can write reactive queries hosted inside StreamInsight as well as compose temporal queries on reactive objects. High Availability – Check-pointing over temporal streams and multiple processes with shared computation. Here is how simple coding can be with the 2.1 Programming Model: class Program {     static void Main(string[] args)     {         using (Server server = Server.Create("Default"))         {             // Create an app             Application app = server.CreateApplication("app");             // Define a simple observable which generates an integer every second             var source = app.DefineObservable(() =>                 Observable.Interval(TimeSpan.FromSeconds(1)));             // Define a sink.             var sink = app.DefineObserver(() =>                 Observer.Create<long>(x => Console.WriteLine(x)));             // Define a query to filter the events             var query = from e in source                         where e % 2 == 0                         select e;             // Bind the query to the sink and create a runnable process             using (IDisposable proc = query.Bind(sink).Run("MyProcess"))             {                 Console.WriteLine("Press a key to dispose the process...");                 Console.ReadKey();             }         }     } }   That’s how easily you can define a source, sink and compose a query and run it. Note that we did not replace the existing APIs, they co-exist with the new surface. Stay tuned, you will see a series of articles coming out over the next few weeks about the new features and how to use them. Come and grab it from our download center page and let us know what you think! You can find the updated MSDN documentation here, and we would appreciate if you could provide feedback to the docs as well—best via email to [email protected]. Moreover, we updated our samples to demonstrate the new programming surface. Regards, The StreamInsight Team

    - by Eratosthenes
    I'm trying to get these fireBalls to drop more often, im not sure if im using Math.random correctly also, for some reason I'm getting a null reference because I think the fireBalls array waits for one to leave the stage before dropping another one? this is the relevant code: var sun:Sun=new Sun var fireBalls:Array=new Array() var left:Boolean; function onEnterFrame(event:Event){ if (left) { sun.x = sun.x - 15; }else{ sun.x = sun.x + 15; } if (fireBalls.length>0&&fireBalls[0].y>stage.stageHeight){ // Fireballs exit stage removeChild(fireBalls[0]); fireBalls.shift(); } for (var j:int=0; j<fireBalls.length; j++){ fireBalls[j].y=fireBalls[j].y+15; if (fireBalls[j].y>stage.stageHeight-fireBall.width/2){ } } if (Math.random()<.2){ // Fireballs shooting from Sun var fireBall:FireBall=new FireBall; fireBall.x=sun.x; addChild(fireBall); fireBalls.push(fireBall); } }

  • What significant lost steps forward in side tracks should be revived in the main stream of software?

    - by C.W.Holeman II
In reading Alan Kay's question on Significant new inventions I was coming up with answers that were not new ideas but old ones that have been passed by in the main stream. So, what significant lost steps forward that happened in a side track should be revived in the main stream of software? These would be ideas that worked well in their context but a different context appeared and became dominant the context, even though it lacked the idea. It maybe that in the new dominant context one just cannot do something or it requires great effort to be exerted.

  • Why do I need to republish a file when I update it?

    - by user13089
The story is: I am coding a program and at the same time, i want to share it with my group members using ubuntu. They don't have an Ubuntu One account and what I do is to publish the file and my friends just get the link and the file. But, strangely or not, every time I upload a new version of this file (I add more code and save it), the used link seems to be "outdated" and I need to publish the same file again and to get a new link every time i modify the same file. Couldn't it be possible to save a new version of your file and the same link just "points" to the newer version?

  • Monitor aspect ratio; Does the difference matter?

    - by Craige
So, I'm looking ordering myself a new development desktop soon and setting up a PROPER office environment by the end of this year. To boost productivity, I'm going to purchase three new monitors. I find that two just isn't enough when I'm debugging or doing something intensive. That said, I had something pointed out to me the other day that I never really noticed nor cared about before - is the difference between a 16:10 and a 16:9 monitor noticeable when programming? Do you really miss those few extra lines, or is it something that you don't notice at all. I notice HP only seems to sell 16:9 monitors (as far as I have found). Is this becoming something of a new standard with the recent growth and cleaver marketing of of "HD 16:9"? To summarize: Has anybody made the switch from 16:10 to 16:9 (or vise-versa) and actually noticed the difference while programming?

  • Ubuntu Software Center is crashing while trying to install psychonauts

    - by GonzoDark
I am having a problem installing Tim Schafers epic platform video game Psychonauts trough the Ubuntu Software Center. I have bought the game on http://www.humblebundle.com/ and I have used the new redeem option introduced in this bundle: "redeem your bundle on the Ubuntu Software Center." When I have downloaded approximately 2.1 GB of Psychonauts then Ubuntu Software Center starts to repeatedly crash and pop-up with a new crash report dialog every few seconds (before previous ones are closed and that will crash the computer after a few min, unless I stop the download). I also have a file-size bug, where Ubuntu Software Center tells me that I have downloaded 880,2 MB out of 133,3 MB I use the new Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and Ubuntu Software Center version 5.2.2.2 (©2009-2011 Canonical <--- That is also a bug, should be 2012 I guess) I hope someone can help me.

Reader new to my blog might have wondered why blog lives in a .NZ domain: to make a long story short is because when I started my blog I was soo excited about my relocation to New Zealand that I registered a .NZ domain. Then I came back to Italy, and started to work in Milano. Last autumn I had to chance to go back to New Zealand again, but at the same time the offer to work for an European Institution arrived. • What Do You Think About This Smelly Test?

    - by panamack
I caught a whiff of a smell eminating from one of my tests, in a scenario akin to the following: [TestFixture] public void CarPresenterTests{ [Test] public void Throws_If_Cars_Wheels_Collection_Is_Null(){ IEnumerable<Wheels> wheels = null; var car = new Car(wheels); Assert. That( ()=>new CarPresenter(car), Throws.InstanceOf<ArgumentException>() .With.Message.EqualTo("Can't create if cars wheels is null)); } } public class CarPresenter{ public CarPresenter(Car car) { if(car.Wheels == null) throw new ArgumentException("Can't create if cars wheels is null); _car = car; _car.Wheels.Rolling += WheelsRollingHandler; } } I was struggling to describe what the problem is except that it seems wrong that a CarPresenter should attempt to dictate to a Car whether or not it's Wheels are initialised correctly. I wondered what pointers people here might give me?

  • ACPI Events not triggered after booting

    - by user3208188
I purchased a Convertible (Laptop and Tablet, Ubuntu 14.04 installed) and would like to execute a script when changing from laptop to tablet mode and the other way around. So I created two new files within the /etc/acpi/events folder corresponding to two new scripts in the /etc/acpi folder. Everything works well if I create a new acpid process (e.g "sudo acpid -c /etc/acpi/events -s /var/run/acpid.socket") manually. However, if I do not initiate this process manually the scripts are not executed, even though there is a process running with the same options right after the machine has booted by default. The only difference I can find is the parent pid. If I create the process the parent is "init --user", while the parent of the automatically initiated process is "/sbin/init". Can anyone help me by explaining why this issue happens and how I can avoid to start an acpid process manually every time I boot the device?

  • Why are the proposed BADSIG (on apt-get update) fixes secure?

    - by EvanED
I'm running apt-get update, and I see errors like W: GPG error: http://us.archive.ubuntu.com precise Release: The following signatures were invalid: BADSIG 40976EAF437D05B5 Ubuntu Archive Automatic Signing Key <[email protected]> It's not hard to find instructions on how to fix these problems, for instance by asking for the new keys with apt-key adv --recv-keys or rebuilding the cache; so I'm not asking about how to fix these. But why is this the right thing to do? Why is "oh, I need new keys? Cool, go get new keys" not just defeating the purpose of having a signed repository in the first place? Are the keys signed by a master key that apt-key checks? Should we be doing some additional validation to ensure that we're getting legitimate keys?

  • Fresh start outside Google's crapbox [on hold]

    - by Krzysztof Minister Bytu
I might have been experimenting with my website too much and Google first cut the flow of visitors considerably and now I didn't get one for 4 days already. It's a joke that they've done this, because I've put a lot of work into it, but that's a topic for another day. My question is about further avoiding it. I want to take the partly improved design from that website onto a new one and get a new domain name. The question is: in that case, do I have to change the hosting option (it has my old website name in the address), or is changing the domain enough for Google to treat it as something new from a "fresh user". In other words, does Google get through the domain address and log into the actual hosting address? I'd hate to waste another few months of hard work, so I prefer to take every possible precaution but not paying for another hosting would make things easier on the wallet.

  • Upgrading Ubuntu to 12.04 stuck

    - by Chris Britt
While upgrading from 11.10 to 12.04, I'm stalled at the step: Installing new version of config file /etc/init/udevtrigger.conf The Terminal in the Distribution Upgrade window is expanded, there is no prompt for user input. I've hit enter a few times but it doesn't change anything but add a blank line after the last print statement. It's been sitting for ~6 hours at this stage. No other windows or dialog boxes are open. The upgrade has progressed through "Preparing to Upgrade", "Setting new software channels", and "Getting new packages". Under the progress bar (which estimates 1 day 2 hours remaining, and has for some time), it says Preparing to configure libpcap0.8. I'd take a screen-shot, but it won't let me save the file anywhere. The progress bar is about 1/3 complete.
