  • Is the Intel Core i5 mobile processor better than the Intel Core i7 mobile processor?

    I'm shopping for a new laptop from Dell (going to install Ubuntu on it) and I'm currently trying to sort out which processor I want. Based purely on the clock speed, it would seem that the core i5 is better than the core i7. The Intel® Core™ i5-430M has a 2.26GHz clock speed, while the Intel® Core™ i7-720QM Quad Core Processor only has a 1.6GHz clock speed. Would this not indicate that the i5 is faster than the i7?

  • "Could not claim interface on camera: -6" when trying to connect usb camera (Kinect)

    I have installed the freenect library from openkinect.org. With that library there is a demo application which you can run from the terminal to test out the Kinect. However when I run this command I get the following output: richard@behemoth:~$ sudo freenect-glview Kinect camera test Number of devices found: 1 Could not claim interface on camera: -6 Could not open device This particular error is thrown by the library libusb by the function libusb_claim_interface and the error -6 corresponds to the LIBUSB_ERROR_BUSY. So my guess is that it has something to do with mounting the usb, rather than specifically the freenect library or the Kinect itself. So my question is how can I find out what resource is using this interface and how can I free it so that I can access it?     At this point, I'm thinking of just using CSS 3, esp. since I'm a programmer, but I'd like to do this with Photoshop because I think it's nicer since I'm working with images anyway, among other reasons... Before I move on, my first question is: Is there a place like SuperUser for designers (or for Photoshop-like or questions)? What I Want: I want the icons on http://www.mattdipasquale.com/ to look like those on http://about.me/mattdipasquale. About.me has an outdated Twitter icon and does not have icons for GitHub, StackOverflow, etc. So, although I like the look of their icons, I want to be able to create these icons myself instead of using their versions. What I Have: I have different iphone icons, like the Facebook iPhone icon, Twitter iPhone icon, etc., that I got from iTunes, using Firebug to find the URL of the background image. I opened them up in Photoshop and pressed option + command + i to reduce the image size to 32px x 32px with Bicubic Sharper (best for reduction). I now have a square icon layer. Closing the Gap: In addition to the icon layer, I want to have a clipping-mask layer that will apply the 5px rounded-corners, 1px stroke, and 1px bevel. (Note: I just want to apply effects to the edges of the icon because the gloss and other effects are already encoded in the iTunes image. Also, I'm just guessing about the pixel values, but I want it to look good, like the icons on about.me.) What settings should I use for the blend options to make the icons look good, like iphone icons or those used by about.me? Why a Clipping Mask? The reason I want to use a clipping mask is that I want ease of reproducibility. I want to be able to apply the same styling to other square icon layers by simply replacing the square icon layer and then saving for web. If there is a better way to achieve such ease of reproducibility, please suggest it. I've seen Photoshop iPhone icon templates, but I couldn't figure out how to use them with my own images. Thanks!   • Firefox/Google Chrome extension to darken pages & reduce eye strain

    Is there an extension or add-on like Stylish which lets you easily toggle back and forth between affected (Stylish) and standard (or untainted) view? I've tried changing colors in Firefox (Settings Content Colors) but there is no quick toggle between the states. Firefox or Google Chrome, whichever one has the extension. Doesn't matter since I'll switch to using that as my primary development browser.

  • Converting linear colors to SRGB shows banding in FFmpeg

    When I convert an EXR file sequence with x264 using FFmpeg and convert the colorspace from linear to SRGB (with gamma 0.45454545) I get some heavy banding issues (most visible on a dark gradient).   • Windows 7 crashes with STOP 0x101 ("A clock interrupt was not received..") every time the laptop tri

    I have an HP Compaq nc8430 with a new install of Windows 7 (32 bit). Every time I sleep the laptop, it crashes. It also crashes sometimes just during normal use. It does hibernate properly. The only reliable trigger I've found to crash it is sleep mode. It's not overclocked, and only standard drivers are installed. It seems to always be the following error: A clock interrupt was not received on a secondary processor within the time interval. And the following STOP code: STOP: 0x00000101 (0x00000061, 0x00000000, 0x80DBF120, 0X00000001) I'm not sure it's always the same parameters exactly, but always seems to be error 101. Given the text of the error message, I've disabled the Dual Core option in BIOS, and this appears to have fixed it - no crashes so far, and it sleeps ok now. However, I'd love a solution that doesn't involve cutting processor performance in half. Any suggestions?

  • Hardware selection for Linux machine

    Hi, I am building a new box, and planning to install Ubuntu 9-04 or Ubuntu 9-10 on it. I am wary of the hardware selection because in the past I struggled with lack of drivers or driver incompatibility with the network card and video card, etc. The last time I built a Linux box was 2007, and I have not kept up to date with the changes since. One notable difference is that I can no longer find motherboards with nVidia chip sets.   • Why does my motherboard go through an endless reboot cycle when 8 GB of memory is attempted vs 6 GB?

    I never got an answer in my googling to this about a year ago and have an extra stick of memory I'd like to be able to use. When is inserted the computer starts, and then reboots immediately in an endless reboot cycle. As soon as the 4th stick is removed, the computer works fine. Right now I have 6 GB of my 8 GB installed. Is there a solution that I am missing to enabling this motherboard to actually boot up with all 8 GB (it supports it). Right now it won't even boot up to BIOS with the 4 sticks... only 3?   • Windows XP SP3 - Upgrade - No longer part of workgroup

    When I woke up this morning I decided to have a really lousy day. For a long time I have been telling auto updater to remind me later about installing SP3. But not this morning... It looked good, until I tried to access my NAS. Can't connect, can't see it, nothing. The other computers can see it, so it is my PC. Oh, and they can no longer see me. It turns out the only thing I can see is the printer. So if you know what wonderful thing Microsoft decided to change during the upgrade (oxymoron in my opinion), I would be grateful. Short of turning on all of the services I have tried so many things, and rebooted so often, that I am just sick of it.

  • Windows 7 and wallpaper folders

    I try to change my desktop wallpaper and I cannot choose a different folder from the one I chose at first... When I first installed W7 I changed the wallpaper by right-clicking in the desktop and choosing Customize (maybe it's not correct because I use the italian version) and then Change Wallpaper in the bottom and finally I browsed for a folder with some images in and chose the wallpaper. When I do the same exact things now, the folder I select in the final pass is not selected: I mean its pictures are not shown and it doesn't appear in the drop-down list. I can put a specific picture as a wallpaper by selecting it through Explorer, and some times (not always) the folder shows in the drop-down list. Is there any possible solution to this?

    Question: What steps can I take to make a touchpad that once worked, work again. Info: I'm running ubuntu desktop on my net book. it has been working more or less fine. There have been some minor issues. but nothing to bad. recently I was messing around with burning a mandriva .iso, and suddenly my touch pad just stops working. every now and then it will work for a brief moment after I bring back from sleep mode. The computer says that there is a touch pad and that it is active. any tips?

    Hi, I have a windows service running under "SYSTEM" account that checks if a specific application is running for each logged in user. If the application is not running, the service starts it (under corresponding user name). I'm trying to accomplish my goal using CreateProcessAsUser(). The service does start the application under corresponding user name, but the GUI is not drawn. (Yes, I'm making sure that "Allow service to interact with desktop" check box is enabled). System: XP SP3, labguage: C# Here is some code that might be of interest: PROCESS_INFORMATION processInfo = new PROCESS_INFORMATION(); startInfo.cb = Marshal.SizeOf(startInfo); startInfo.lpDesktop = "winsta0\\default"; bResult = Win32.CreateProcessAsUser(hToken, null, strCommand, IntPtr.Zero, IntPtr.Zero, false, 0, IntPtr.Zero, null, ref startInfo, out processInfo); As far as I understand, setting startInfo.lpDesktop = "winsta0\default"; should have used the desktop of corresponding user. Even contrary to what is stated here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/165194, I tried setting lpDesktop to null, or not setting it at all, both giving the same result: process was started in the name of expected user and I could see a part of window's title bar. The "invisible" window intercepts mouse click events, handles them as expected. It just doesn't draw itself. Is anyone familiar with such a problem and knows what am I doing wrong?

  • Windows XP SP3 Keyboard stops working

    Here's the strangest thing I have yet to see in 20+ yrs of computer repairs. My in-laws Windowsx XP SP3 has stopped recognizing keyboards. The keyboards work fine in the BIOS, during the boot select process to boot normally, etc. but once Windows comes up it will not recognize any USB keyboard. The USB mouse works fine, have tried different USB ports, different keyboards, etc. nothing works. I can log into the machine via VNC and use the remote keyboard just fine, but not connected locally. Tried a system restore, it says nothing changed. I am about to just re-install Windoze at this point, except I am afraid it will happen again. I have googled for this and it is not unheard of, but I have not found any solution other than nuking it. Anyone have any ideas? I have re-installed the USB drivers for the M/B. Gone into devices and deleted them for a re-install, etc. Keyboard works off a Linux live boot CD, and in the BIOS setup so it is not a hardware issue, and I have tried a few keyboards all of which I know are good and work fine on other systems.

    I know Windows XP and previous had an rsm.exe file in the <root>\windows\system32 folder that could be used to manage media. I used this command in batch files and from the command line to eject external disks (iPod, CF cardreader, etc.). This utility appears not to be included in Windows 7, and I wonder if there is some replacement utility that will allow the same thing. I've been unable to find any such thing. I'm aware of the 3rd party utilities; this question is only about what is included with Windows 7.

    Since I installed Win7 on my DELL Inspiron 1520 notebook, I frequently experience BSODs. I noticed that those nearly only happen on two occasions disconnecting a Bluetooth DUN connection selecting a file for upload in a browser (i.e. clicking on the button, shortly after the file dialog opened) The BSOD doesn't appear always on these actions. BluescreenView told me that most of the time it is srv2.sys+45883 or srv2.sys+42982 or ntoskrnl.exe+71f00 Now I read that srv2.sys is for NETBIOS sharing, which could be triggered when opening the file open dialog. All unused NICs are deactivated. Any ideas how to fix this?

    I'm installing VMware Workstation on a SLED 11 SP1, and the installation is blocked by an error message "Kernel headers for version 2.6.32.27-0.2-default were not found". If you installed them in a non-default path you can specify the path below. Otherwise refer to your distribution's documentation for installation instructions and click Refresh to search again in default locations. The output of rpm -qa | grep kernel is kernel-default-2.6.32.27-0.2.2 kernel-default-base-2.6.32.27-0.2.2 linux-kernel-headers-2.6.32-1.4.13 kernel-default-extra-2.6.32.27-0.2.2 nfs-kernel-server-1.2.1-2.10.1 I had met this issue in Ubuntu and I installed the required linux header via apt-get then the issue disappeared. But in SLED, I didn't find the rpm package in SUSE's software repository, and I also google "linux-kernel-headers-2.6.32.27" but did not match any documents. Any suggestion will be highly appreciated. Thanks.   • Robocopy unilog output is gibberish

    I tried to get robocopy in Windows 7 to generate a Unicode log, since I have files with Unicode characters. The command I used: robocopy C:\mysource D:\mydest /mir /unilog:backup.log /tee File the copy works and the onscreen output is correct, the log file itself just contains gibberish. This is regardless of whether I use the Command Prompt or the Powershell. What gives? Am I doing something wrong?

  • MacBook Pro with Time Capsule can not see Samsung CLX 3175FW wireless printer on Bonjour

    I have a MacBook Pro running OS X 10.6 and another MacBook Pro running OS X 10.5. Neither see my Samsung printer when I click on Bonjour. Needless to say neither will print. I have a Time Capsule connected wirelessly to my MacBook Pros. I have tried reinstalling drivers for the printer but nothing seems to work. I tried this approach because when Apple replaced my Time Capsule and I went to print the way I had initially been running printing requests would get hung up. Any suggestions would be helpful?

I have the following in a test markdown -document [TOC] -- headings here with # -format --- However, I do not get the table of contents. This suggests me that we need to somehow activate the extensions when we compile by the markdown.py -script. **The problem returns to my first quoted text which I is rather confusing to me.
