  • Advanced find in Rails

    - by jriff
    Hi all I really suck at Rails' finders besides the most obvious. I always resort to SQL when things get more advanced than Model.find(:all, :conditions => ['field>? and field<? and id in (select id from table)', 1,2]) I have this method: def self.get_first_validation_answer(id) a=find_by_sql(" select answers.*, answers_registrations.answer_text from answers_registrations left join answers on answers_registrations.answer_id=answers.id where (answers_registrations.question_id in (select id from questions where validation_question=true)) and (sale_registration_id=#{id}) limit 1 ").first a.answer_text || a.text if a end Can someone create a find method that gets me what I want? Regards, Jacob

  • Using Session Vars in a MVC Domain Model library

    - by 104286623826380127552
    Hello to all. I have a IQueryable function. In that function, I need to store and retrieve data to Session; can you guys point me in the right direction. I've looked at the HttpSessionStatBase where the session is usually taken from HttpContext.Current but this doesnt seem possible to do in the library. Am I missing something? Thanks in advance.

  • How can two programs talk to each other in Java?

    - by Arnon
    I want to ?reduce? the CPU usage/ROM usage/RAM usage - generally?, all system resources that my app uses - who doesn't? :) For this reason I want to split the preferences window from the rest of the application, and let the preferences window to run as ?independent? program. The preferences program ?should? write to a Property file(not a problem at all) and to send a "update signal" to the main program - which means it should call the update method (that i wrote) that found in the Main class. How can I call the update method in the Main program from the preferences program? To put it another way, is a way to build preferences window that take system resources just when the window appears? Is this approach - of separating programs and let them talk to each other (somehow) - the right approach for speeding up my programs?

  • Function naming: sendCharacter or receiveCharacter?

    - by bobobobo
    I'm trying to name a function that runs when a character is received by the object. For the caller, it should be named sendCharacter, so that it can call: object->sendCharacter( character ) ; That looks nice for the caller.. but for the receiver, it implements a method /// Called when this object is do something /// with a character /// from the caller void sendCharacter( char c ) ; So for the recipient class, it looks like this method will actually send a character out, not receive one. So then, I could call the function receiveCharacter /// Called when this object is do something /// with a character /// from the caller void receiveCharacter( char c ) ; But now the caller does this: object->receiveCharacter( character ) ; Which just looks odd. How can I better name this function?

  • How to test that invalid arguments raise an ArgumentError exception using RSpec?

    - by John Topley
    I'm writing a RubyGem that can raise an ArgumentError if the arguments supplied to its single method are invalid. How can I write a test for this using RSpec? The example below shows the sort of implementation I have in mind. The bar method expects a single boolean argument (:baz), the type of which is checked to make sure that it actually is a boolean: module Foo def self.bar(options = {}) baz = options.fetch(:baz, true) validate_arguments(baz) end def self.validate_arguments(baz) raise(ArgumentError, ":baz must be a boolean") unless valid_baz?(baz) end def self.valid_baz?(baz) baz.is_a?(TrueClass) || baz.is_a?(FalseClass) end end

  • Is there an autorelease pool in class methods?

    - by mystify
    I have an class method which generates an UIView, like this: + (UIImage*)imageWithFileName:(NSString*)imgFile { UIImage *img = nil; NSBundle *appBundle = [NSBundle mainBundle]; NSString *resourcePath = [appBundle pathForResource:imgFile ofType:nil]; if (resourcePath != nil) { NSURL *imageURL = [NSURL fileURLWithPath:resourcePath]; NSData *data = [[NSData alloc] initWithContentsOfURL:imageURL]; img = [UIImage imageWithData:data]; // should be autoreleased!! [data release]; } return img; } However, when I use this, the image data is NEVER freed. There is definitely a memory bug with this, although I didn't break any memory management rule I am aware of. My guess is that because this is a class method which gets called from instance methods, There is no active autorelease pool in place or it's one that only gets drained when I quit the app. Could that be right?

  • How to clone a model's attributes easily?

    - by Zabba
    I have these models: class Address < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :event attr_accessible :street, :city validates :street, :city, :presence => true end class Event < ActiveRecord::Base has_one :address accepts_nested_attributes_for :address end If I do the below assignment in the Events create action and save the event I get an error: #Use the current user's address for the event @event.address_attributes = current_user.address.attributes #Error occurs at the above mentioned line ActiveRecord::RecordNotFound (Couldn't find Address with ID=1 for Event with ID=) I think what's happening is that all the address's attributes (including the primary key) is getting assigned in the @event.address_attributes = line. But all I really want is the "real data" (street, city), not the primary keys or created_at etc to get copied over. I suppose I could write a small method to do this sort of selective copy but I can't help but feel there must be some built-in method for this? What's the best/right way to do this?

  • twitter share url forgeting the tweet content after login

    - by tpk
    I'm trying to add a "share via twitter" link to our website. I'm aware of the standard http://twitter.com/home?status=TWEET method, and it works good enough for my purposes when the user is logged in to twitter already. If, however, the user is not logged in, twitter displays the login form first (which is only reasonable). After the login, the home screen is displayed without the tweet content. Am I missing something obvious, or is this a know flaw in this method? If so, what is the easiest way (apart from using services like TweetMeme, which I noticed asks for login in advance) to make the share button work as expected?

  • WPF textbox derived control override drag&drop OnPreviewDrop (C sharp)

    - by Petr Klus
    Hi, I have been working on my custom control derived from the TextBox and I have encountered a problem I can not solve right now. Brief description of the problem: my textbox contains plain text which contains tags which I want to keep consistent - so far I have overriden text selection so they can be selected only as a whole tag etc. Right now I have moved to processing of drag&drop. If any text is dropped on the textfield and it is dropped on the tag, I want the insertion to be moved before or after the tag. The actual problem is with setting of the e.Handled=true. If I set it to true, it almost works - the text is inserted via my routine, but it is not removed from the source. If I set it to false, after executing my method the original textbox's insertion method is run. Is there any way to alter event routing? Or am I approaching this wrong from the start? Code of my method: protected override void OnPreviewDragEnter(DragEventArgs e) { base.OnPreviewDragEnter(e); e.Handled = true; // let us draw our very own caret... } protected override void OnPreviewDrop(DragEventArgs e) { base.OnPreviewDrop(e); fieldsReady = false; int selStart = this.SelectionStart; int selLength = this.SelectionLength; string droppedData = (string)e.Data.GetData(DataFormats.StringFormat); // where to insert Point whereDropped = e.GetPosition(this); int droppedIndex = GetCharacterIndexFromPoint(whereDropped, true); if (droppedIndex == this.Text.Length - 1) { double c = GetRectFromCharacterIndex(droppedIndex).X; if (whereDropped.X > c) droppedIndex++; } // only if the source was us, do this: if (this.SelectionLength > 0) // this means that we are dragging from our textbox! { // was there any selection? if so, remove it! this.Text = this.Text.Substring(0, selStart) + this.Text.Substring(selStart + selLength); e.Handled = true; // 2DO!! alter the indices depending on the removed selection // insertion this.Text = this.Text.Substring(0, droppedIndex) + droppedData + this.Text.Substring(droppedIndex); } }

  • Do I need to syncronize thread access to an int

    - by Martin Harris
    I've just written a method that is called by multiple threads simultaneously and I need to keep track of when all the threads have completed, the code uses this pattern: private void RunReport() { _reportsRunning++; try { //code to run the report } finally { _reportsRunning--; } } This is the only place within the code that _reportsRunning's value is changed, and the method takes about a second to run. Occasionally when I have more than six or so threads running reports together the final result for _reportsRunning can get down to -1, if I wrap the calls to _runningReports++ and _runningReports-- in a lock then the behaviour appears to be correct and consistant. So, to the question: When I was learning multithreading in C++ I was taught that you didn't need to synchronize calls to increment and decrement operations because they were always one assembly instruction and therefore it was impossible for the thread to be switched out mid-call. Was I taught correctly, and if so how come that doesn't hold true for C#?

  • In QT 4.6 w/ Webkit: How to handle popup window requests (WebView::createWindow)?

    - by CM
    Hi all, I'm new to QT and have been trying to create a test browser. What I'm trying to do now is to handle js-based popup requests. After reading the QT documentation, I learned that I need to re-implement the QWebView::createWindow method to do just that. Now I've re-implemented this method, but it seems to be not called when I try to click a link that triggers a popup window. Can any one help me? Do I need to subclass both the WebView and WebPage classes? If so, how do I do that? I'm quite new to QT and I've done tons of searches and found nothing. Thank you all in advance for any hint and advice!

  • Can someone explain Kohana 3's routing system?

    - by alex
    In bootstrap.php, where you set routes, I'm having a hard time getting them to work. I read some documentation a while ago that I can't seem to find again that explains them. Here is one of my examples Route::set('products', 'products/(type)', array('type' => '.+')) ->defaults(array( 'controller' => 'articles', 'action' => 'view_product', 'page' => 'shock-absorbers', )); I thought that would mean a request like products/something would load up the articles controller, and the action_view_product method. But I can't get it to work. Can someone please explain to me exactly how they work, and what all the method parameters are?

  • Best practices to test protected methods with PHPUnit

    - by GrGr
    Hello, I found the discussion on Do you test private method informative. I have decided, that in some classes, I want to have protected methods, but test them. Some of these methods are static and short. Because most of the public methods make use of them, I will probably be able to safely remove the tests later. But for starting with a TDD approach and avoid debugging, I really want to test them. I thought of the following: Method Object as adviced in an answer seems to be overkill for this. Start with public methods and when code coverage is given by higher level tests, turn them protected and remove the tests. Inherit a class with a testable interface making protected methods public Which is best practice? Is there anything else? It seems, that JUnit automatically changes protected methods to be public, but I did not have a deeper look at it. PHP does not allow this via reflection.

  • Forcing LINQ to SQL to make one single call for all child rows

    - by zaph0d
    Let say I have a method (example taken from another post): public IQueryable<CityBlock> GetCityBlocks(){ var results = from o in db.city_blocks let buildings = GetBuildingsOnBlock(o.block_id) //returns Iqueryable select new CityBlock { BuildingsOnBlock = buildings, BlockOwner = o.block_owner }; return results; } In the calling method I add Skip() and Take() methods plus some filtering and then do a ToList(). The trouble is that I am getting dozens of database calls - one for all the city blocks and then a separate one for each building. Is there a way that I can refactor this code to just make two calls: one for the city blocks and one for all the buildings

  • How to blit() in android?

    - by Lo'oris
    I'm used to handle graphics with old-school libraries (allegro, GD, pygame), where if I want to copy a part of a bitmap into another... I just use blit. I'm trying to figure out how to do that in android, and I got very confused. So... we have these Canvas that are write-only, and Bitmaps that are read-only? It seems too stupid to be real, there must be something I'm missing, but I really can't figure it out.

  • Data Validation for Random varying Phone Numbers

    - by baron
    I am storing phone numbers of varying lengths in my WPF (C#, VS 08) App. I store them as strings. My question is about my method AddNewPhoneNo(string phoneNo). In this method, I use Int.TryParse to validate the incoming number (i.e. not null, is numeric...). I've since realized this is probably not the best way to do this, because then I am limited to a number which is ± 2147483647. Definetly this is not always the case with phone numbers. What is a good, easy way to validate phone numbers? I guess the basic rules would be as follows: All numeric All positive Upto 25 chars (could be more, but this will to do for time being) Can't thing if theres any more rules at the moment, that's probably it.

  • How to use a Proxy with Youtube API? (Python)

    - by Kate
    Hi, I'm working a script that will upload videos to YouTube with different accounts. Is there a way to use HTTPS or SOCKS proxies to filter all the requests. My client doesn't want to leave any footprints for Google. The only way I found was to set the proxy environment variable beforehand but this seems cumbersome. Is there some way I'm missing? Thanks :)

  • comparing int values in android

    - by user1183066
    I am making an android game that is checking the players health value when this method is being runned. But however, it's not reacting. It doesn't do anything, when the value is less than 3, it shouldn't do anything, but when it is equal to 3, it should run a method. Please help me and thanks SO much in advance! This is the code that i am using: private void checkLivesLeftValue() { if (livesLeftValue == 3) { //Message to display: "You lost! onMethod(); } else { livesLeftValue = livesLeftValue + 1; } }

  • Which is the fastest idiomatic way to add all vectors (in the math sense) inside a Scala list?

    - by davips
    I have two solutions, but one doesn't compile and the other, I think, could be better: object Foo extends App { val vectors = List(List(1,2,3), List(2,2,3), List(1,2,2)) //just a stupid example //transposing println("vectors = " + vectors.transpose.map (_.sum)) //it prints vectors = List(4, 6, 8) //folding vectors.reduce { case (a, b) => (a zip b) map { case (x, y) => x + y } } //compiler says: missing parameter type for exp. function; arg. types must be fully known }

  • SVN: Recurisvely add files?

    - by Mark
    I'm trying svn add *.py --force As the documentation suggests, but I know for a fact it's missing files nested in deeper folders. Why? Is there a standard way to do this with other unix commands too? */*.py will nab a few more files, but it's kind of a pain in the butt to do this for every possible depth.

  • Indexing with pointer C/C++

    - by Leavenotrace
    Hey I'm trying to write a program to carry out newtons method and find the roots of the equation exp(-x)-(x^2)+3. It works in so far as finding the root, but I also want it to print out the root after each iteration but I can't get it to work, Could anyone point out my mistake I think its something to do with my indexing? Thanks a million :) #include <stdio.h> #include <math.h> #include <malloc.h> //Define Functions: double evalf(double x) { double answer=exp(-x)-(x*x)+3; return(answer); } double evalfprime(double x) { double answer=-exp(-x)-2*x; return(answer); } double *newton(double initialrt,double accuracy,double *data) { double root[102]; data=root; int maxit = 0; root[0] = initialrt; for (int i=1;i<102;i++) { *(data+i)=*(data+i-1)-evalf(*(data+i-1))/evalfprime(*(data+i-1)); if(fabs(*(data+i)-*(data+i-1))<accuracy) { maxit=i; break; } maxit=i; } if((maxit+1==102)&&(fabs(*(data+maxit)-*(data+maxit-1))>accuracy)) { printf("\nMax iteration reached, method terminated"); } else { printf("\nMethod successful"); printf("\nNumber of iterations: %d\nRoot Estimate: %lf\n",maxit+1,*(data+maxit)); } return(data); } int main() { double root,accuracy; double *data=(double*)malloc(sizeof(double)*102); printf("NEWTONS METHOD PROGRAMME:\nEquation: f(x)=exp(-x)-x^2+3=0\nMax No iterations=100\n\nEnter initial root estimate\n>> "); scanf("%lf",&root); _flushall(); printf("\nEnter accuracy required:\n>>"); scanf("%lf",&accuracy); *data= *newton(root,accuracy,data); printf("Iteration Root Error\n "); printf("%d %lf \n", 0,*(data)); for(int i=1;i<102;i++) { printf("%d %5.5lf %5.5lf\n", i,*(data+i),*(data+i)-*(data+i-1)); if(*(data+i*sizeof(double))-*(data+i*sizeof(double)-1)==0) { break; } } getchar(); getchar(); free(data); return(0); }
