  • Efficient way to calculate byte length of a character, depending on the encoding

    - by BalusC
What's the most efficient way to calculate the byte length of a character, taking the character encoding into account? In UTF-8 for example the characters have a variable byte length, so each character needs to be determined individually. As far now I've come up with this: char c = getItSomehow(); String encoding = "UTF-8"; int length = new String(new char[] { c }).getBytes(encoding).length; But this is clumsy and inefficient in a loop since a new String needs to be created everytime. I can't find other and more efficient ways in the Java API. I imagine that this can be done with bitwise operations like bit shifting, but that's my weak point and I'm unsure how to take the encoding into account here :) If you question the need for this, check this topic.

  • How to cycle through matrix blocks?

    - by luiss
I have some matrix which I want to cycle through blocks, the matrix could be of many different sizes, but I can know the size, is there a way to fast cycle through blocks? i.e: to fast output the indexes of the blocks, suppose a matrix of 4*4 I should have: Block1: (0,0),(0,1)(1,0)(1,1) Block2: (0,2),(0,3)(1,2)(1,3) Block3: (2,0),(2,1)(3,0)(3,1) Block4: (2,2),(2,3)(3,2)(3,3) Where the indexes are (row, col). For blocks I mean a submatrix of size sqrt(matrixSize)* sqrt(matrixSize) where matrix is a matrix of matrixSize*matrixSize. For example a matrix of 4*4 has 4 blocks of 2*2, a 9*9 has 9 blocks of 3*3... I'm workdeing in C, but I think that the pseudocode is useful also, I only need the loop on the indexes... Thanks

  • Does a System.Collection.Collection<T> wrap a IList<T> or enumerate over the IList<T> or simply wra

    - by Brian Triplett
If I am exposing a internal member via a Collection property via: public Collection<T> Entries { get { return new Collection<T>(this.fieldImplimentingIList<T>); } } When this property is called what happens? For example what happens when the following lines of code are called: T test = instanceOfAbove.Entries[i]; instanceOfAbove[i] = valueOfTypeT; It's clear that each time this property is called a new reference type is created but what acctually happens? Does it simply wrap the IList<T> underneath, does it enumerate over the IList<T> and to create a new Collection<T> instance? I'm concerned about performance if this property is used in a for loop.

  • [C#] Onpaint events (invalidated) changing execution order after a period normal operation (runtime)

    - by Luke Mcneice
Hi all, I have 3 data graphs that are painted via the their paint events. When I have data that I need to insert into the graph I call the controls invalidate() command. The first control's paint event actually creates a bitmap buffer for the other 2 graphs to avoid repeating a long loop. So the invalidate commands are in a specific order (1,2,3). This works well, however when the graphed data reaches the end of the graph window (PictureBox) where the data would normally start scrolling, the paint events begin firing in the wrong order (2,3,1). has anyone came across this before? why might this be happening?

  • Is writing to a socket an arbitrary limitation of the sendfile() syscall?

    - by Sufian
Prelude sendfile() is an extremely useful syscall for two reasons: First, it's less code than a read()/write() (or recv()/send() if you prefer that jive) loop. Second, it's faster (less syscalls, implementation may copy between devices without buffer, etc...) than the aforementioned methods. Less code. More efficient. Awesome. In UNIX, everything is (mostly) a file. This is the ugly territory from the collision of platonic theory and real-world practice. I understand that sockets are fundamentally different than files residing on some device. I haven't dug through the sources of Linux/*BSD/Darwin/whatever OS implements sendfile() to know why this specific syscall is restricted to writing to sockets (specifically, streaming sockets). I just want to know... Question What is limiting sendfile() from allowing the destination file descriptor to be something besides a socket (like a disk file, or a pipe)?

  • Java, searching through folders to match a name

    - by Nick
Hi folks, I using java to search for a file or folder that matches a specific case. For instance i want to search through all the files and folders and iterate through them as many times as necessary untill i find a result. The catch I searching for files and folders through a binary image of a file system. This means i doubt there are any preexisting classes such java.file.* to do it for me. If it helps i can tell you that i can tell the difference between files and folders easily enough. (a folder is flagged as 0x20) The only way i can think of is to do a standard loop and iterated several times but this limits me if a file or folder is several folders deep. All input greatly welcome

  • How to check all check boxes at a click of a button

    - by LivingThing
I am new to Swing, UI and MVC I have created a code based on MVC. Now my problem is that that in the controller part i have an actioneventlistener which listens to different button clicks. Out of all those buttons i have "select all" and "de-select all". In my view i have a table, one of the column of that table contains "check boxes". Now, when i click the "select-all" button i want to check all the check boxes and with "de-select all" i want to uncheck all of them. Below is my code which is not working. Please tell me what am i doing wrong here. Also, if someone knows a more elagent way please share. Thanks In my view public class CustomerSelectorDialogUI extends JFrame{ public CustomerSelectorDialogUI(TestApplicationUI ownerView, DummyCustomerStore dCStore, boolean modality) { //super(ownerView, modality); setTitle("[=] Customer Selection Dialog [=]"); //setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.DO_NOTHING_ON_CLOSE); custSelectPanel = new JPanel(); buttonPanel = new JPanel(); selectAllButton = new JButton(" Select All "); clearAllButton = new JButton(" Clear All "); applyButton = new JButton(" Apply "); cancelButton = new JButton(" Cancel "); PopulateAndShow(dCStore, Boolean.FALSE); } public void PopulateAndShow(DummyCustomerStore dCStore, Boolean select) { List data = new ArrayList(); for (Customer customer : dCStore.getAllCustomers()) { Object record[] = new Object[COLUMN_COUNT]; record[0] = (select == false) ? • jquery noConflict not working in IE8 only

    - by slik
I have a website using the prootype framework and I am looking to use a jquery plugin. Everything works just not in IE8. It works in ie7 which amazes me. Any idea what maybe wrong? jQuery.noConflict(); function OpenUp(sURL){ window.open(sURL,null,'height=560,width=820,status=yes,toolbar=yes,menubar=yes,location=yes,resizable=yes,scrollbars=yes',false); } jQuery(document).ready(function($) { $("head").append("<link>"); css = $("head").children(":last"); css.attr({ rel: "stylesheet", type: "text/css", href: "/my/docs/jquery.simplyscroll.css" }); $("#scroller").simplyScroll({ autoMode: 'loop', framerate: 1, speed: 1 }); }); I also tired the following: var $j = jQuery.noConflict(); var j = jQuery.noConflict(); everythig works just not in IE8 alone.

  • Why aren't unsigned OpenMP index variables allowed?

    - by Moe
I have a loop in my C++/OpenMP code that looks like this: #pragma omp parallel for for(unsigned int i=0; i<count; i++) { // do stuff } When I compile it (with Visual Studio 2005) I get the following error: error C3016: 'i' : index variable in OpenMP 'for' statement must have signed integral type I understand that the error occurs because i is unsigned instead of signed, and changing i to be signed removed this error. What I want to know is why is this an error? Why aren't unsigned index variables allowed? Looking at the MSDN page for this error gives me no clues.

  • Databind Parent/Child relation with Mysql

    - by e2k
What is the best way to databind parent/child relations? Lets say I have two simple objects: Parent with the following properties, ParentId, Name and Childs and Child with the following properties, ChildId, Name and Parent. I want to write a repository using MySql for this but is failing when I bind both Childs and Parent properties, I have only been able to bind either the Childs property of parent or the Parent property och Child or else I would get a infinite loop. Thinking of it the preferable solution would be to only bind this properties when requested. If I use Linq to sql i would be able to write Parent.Childs[0].Parent.Name but how should I accomplish this with my own repository and with MySql, could anyone point me in the right direction? Looking at the Linq 2 sql generated classes they use EntitySet<Child and EntityRef<Parent could this be used with Mysql? I had a thought of using my IChildRepository in the Parent object and let the Public IEnumerable Childs databind the childs but it seems not right? Best regards E2k

  • CheckboxList not setting Selected with Viewstate disabled

    - by Earlz
I have a CheckboxList that seems to load and do everything right, except for when I do a postback, it will not have the Item.Selected property set. I have viewstate disabled for the entire page. I load it like so(inside Page_Load on every load): foreach (DataRow service in d.Tables[0].Rows) { cblServices.Items.Add(new ListItem((string)service["description"], service["id"].ToString())); } My markup is simple: <asp:CheckBoxList runat="server" ID="cblServices" Width="300px"></asp:CheckBoxList> and then, I use basically something like this(in a _Click serverside event for a button) foreach(ListItem item in cblServices.Items){ if(item.Selected){ MyLabel.Text+="selected: "+item.Value+item.Text; } } and MyLabel never has any text added to it. I can verify with the debugger that it does reach the _Click's foreach loop, but no item is ever selected. What could be the cause of this?

  • Prim's MST algorithm implementation with Java

    - by user1290164
I'm trying to write a program that'll find the MST of a given undirected weighted graph with Kruskal's and Prim's algorithms. I've successfully implemented Kruskal's algorithm in the program, but I'm having trouble with Prim's. To be more precise, I can't figure out how to actually build the Prim function so that it'll iterate through all the vertices in the graph. I'm getting some IndexOutOfBoundsException errors during program execution. I'm not sure how much information is needed for others to get the idea of what I have done so far, but hopefully there won't be too much useless information. This is what I have so far: I have a Graph, Edge and a Vertex class. Vertex class mostly just an information storage that contains the name (number) of the vertex. Edge class can create a new Edge that has gets parameters (Vertex start, Vertex end, int edgeWeight). The class has methods to return the usual info like start vertex, end vertex and the weight. Graph class reads data from a text file and adds new Edges to an ArrayList. The text file also tells us how many vertecis the graph has, and that gets stored too. In the Graph class, I have a Prim() -method that's supposed to calculate the MST: public ArrayList<Edge> Prim(Graph G) { ArrayList<Edge> edges = G.graph; // Copies the ArrayList with all edges in it. ArrayList<Edge> MST = new ArrayList<Edge>(); Random rnd = new Random(); Vertex startingVertex = edges.get(rnd.nextInt(G.returnVertexCount())).returnStartingVertex(); // This is just to randomize the starting vertex. // This is supposed to be the main loop to find the MST, but this is probably horribly wrong.. while (MST.size() < returnVertexCount()) { Edge e = findClosestNeighbour(startingVertex); MST.add(e); visited.add(e.returnStartingVertex()); visited.add(e.returnEndingVertex()); edges.remove(e); } return MST; } The method findClosesNeighbour() looks like this: public Edge findClosestNeighbour(Vertex v) { ArrayList<Edge> neighbours = new ArrayList<Edge>(); ArrayList<Edge> edges = graph; for (int i = 0; i < edges.size() -1; ++i) { if (edges.get(i).endPoint() == s.returnVertexID() && !visited(edges.get(i).returnEndingVertex())) { neighbours.add(edges.get(i)); } } return neighbours.get(0); // This is the minimum weight edge in the list. } ArrayList<Vertex> visited and ArrayList<Edges> graph get constructed when creating a new graph. Visited() -method is simply a boolean check to see if ArrayList visited contains the Vertex we're thinking about moving to. I tested the findClosestNeighbour() independantly and it seemed to be working but if someone finds something wrong with it then that feedback is welcome also. Mainly though as I mentioned my problem is with actually building the main loop in the Prim() -method, and if there's any additional info needed I'm happy to provide it. Thank you. Edit: To clarify what my train of thought with the Prim() method is. What I want to do is first randomize the starting point in the graph. After that, I will find the closest neighbor to that starting point. Then we'll add the edge connecting those two points to the MST, and also add the vertices to the visited list for checking later, so that we won't form any loops in the graph. Here's the error that gets thrown: Exception in thread "main" java.lang.IndexOutOfBoundsException: Index: 0, Size: 0 at java.util.ArrayList.rangeCheck(Unknown Source) at java.util.ArrayList.get(Unknown Source) at Graph.findClosestNeighbour(graph.java:203) at Graph.Prim(graph.java:179) at MST.main(MST.java:49) Line 203: return neighbour.get(0); in findClosestNeighbour() Line 179: Edge e = findClosestNeighbour(startingVertex); in Prim()

  • [java] Efficiency of while(true) ServerSocket Listen

    - by Submerged
I am wondering if a typical while(true) ServerSocket listen loop takes an entire core to wait and accept a client connection (Even when implementing runnable and using Thread .start()) I am implementing a type of distributed computing cluster and each computer needs every core it has for computation. A Master node needs to communicate with these computers (invoking static methods that modify the algorithm's functioning). The reason I need to use sockets is due to the cross platform / cross language capabilities. In some cases, PHP will be invoking these java static methods. I used a java profiler (YourKit) and I can see my running ServerSocket listen thread and it never sleeps and it's always running. Is there a better approach to do what I want? Or, will the performance hit be negligible? Please, feel free to offer any suggestion if you can think of a better way (I've tried RMI, but it isn't supported cross-language. Thanks everyone

  • javascript trying to get 3rd nested array.length and value

How can i get the 3rd nested array (in this case the array starting with "yellow") the array looks like this: [ ["Large", ["yellow", "green", "Blue"], ["$55.00", "$55.00", "$55.00"] ["Medium", ["yellow", "green", "Blue", "Red"], ["$55.00", "$55.00", "$55.00", "$55.00"] ] ["small", ["yellow", "green", "Blue", "Red"], ["$55.00", "$55.00", "$55.00", "$55.00"] ] ] I am trying to get to the ["yellow", "green", "Blue"] array's length and loop to get the values for(i=0; colorNSize.dataArray[0][0][1].length<i; i++){ alert(colorNSize.dataArray[colorNSize.Sizeindex][0][0][i])// alert's nothing } It actually alerts the length of "Large" which is "5" is there a limit for nested arrays? Can this be done?

  • non blocking tcp connect with epoll

    - by doccarcass
My linux application is performing non-blocking TCP connect syscall and then use epoll_wait to detect three way handshake completion. Sometimes epoll_wait returns with both POLLOUT & POLLERR revents set for the same socket descriptor. I would like to understand what's going on at TCP level. I'm not able to reproduce it on demand. My guess is that between two calls to epoll_wait inside my event loop we had a SYN+ACK/ACK/FIN sequence but again I'm not able to reproduce it. Any clue ? Regards, Seb

  • C# Sharp Windows Application prevents Windows from shutting down / logging off

    - by user299711
I have written a C# Windows Forms application, not a service (it is only used when the user is logged in and has a graphical user interface) that has a background thread running in an infinite loop. When I try shutting down Windows (7) however, it tells me the program is preventing it from shutting down or logging off and asks me whether I want to force a shutdown. Now, is there any possibility for my program to become aware (get a handler) of Windows trying to quit it or to log off? So, what I need is to make the application realize when Windows tries to quit. Thanks in advance.

  • different overlay specification in different beamer modes?

    - by Matthew Leingang
I have a beamer frame with about 150 slides on it. I want article and handout mode to only show frame 92. Reading section 8.6.2 of the beamer manual it seems like I should be able to do something like \begin{frame}<handout:92> ... \end{frame} but that seems to have no effect--all 150 slides are set in handout mode, overlaying (making the result unreadable). I have gotten the effect I want by taking all commands within the frame that have an overlay specification and adding "| handout:0" to make them not appear in handout mode. Annoying, but works. But for my 150-slide frame the different slides are generated by a PGF \foreach loop so I can't code slide 92 differently from the rest. But can I do this at the frame's overlay specification?

  • PHP set timeout for script, set_time_limit not working

    - by tehalive
I have a command-line PHP script that runs a wget request using each member of an array with foreach. This wget request can sometimes take a long time so I want to be able to set a timeout for killing the script if it goes past 15 seconds for example. I have PHP safemode disabled and tried set_time_limit(15) early in the script, however it continues indefinitely. I've given up troubleshooting set_time_limit() and was trying to find other ways to kill the script after 15 seconds of execution. However, I'm not sure if it's possible to check the time a script has been running while it's in the middle of a wget request at the same time (a do while loop did not work). Thanks for any tips!

  • Linear Layout Issue at Runtime

    - by George
Hi all, I am trying to build a layout dynamically which display some text and image for the most part, but has a series of buttons placed next to each other in the bottom. I have a linear layout that carries the text, another linear layout that carries the image. And yet another linear layout that carries the buttons that get created in a for loop. I have a main layout aligned vertical that adds the text, image and buttons layout, in that order. To finally generate something like this: Text .... Image ... Button1 Button2 Button3.... The problem is the number of buttons get decided at runtime, so if there are more than 4 buttons, the 5th button gets displayed really tiny. Also, when I tilt the phone, I get only the text and image showing, but no buttons coz the image covers the entire screen. Layoutting seems to be pretty complicated to me, any help is appreciated! Thanks George

  • recv returns old data

    - by anon
    This loop is supposed to take data from a socket line by line and put it in a buffer. For some reason, when there is no new data to return, recv returns the last couple lines it got. I was able to stop the bug by commenting out the first recv, but then I cant tell how long the next line will be. I know it's not a while(this->connected){ memset(buf, '\0', sizeof(buf)); recv(this->sock, buf, sizeof(buf), MSG_PEEK); //get length of next message ptr = strstr(buf, "\r\n"); if (ptr == NULL) continue; err = recv(this->sock, buf, (ptr-buf), NULL); //get next message printf("--%db\n%s\n", err, buf); tok[0] = strtok(buf, " "); for(i=1;tok[i-1]!=NULL;i++) tok[i] = strtok(NULL, " "); //do more stuff }

  • how i can open different linux terminal to output differnt kinds of debug information in python?

    - by Registered User KC
Hi All, I need output different information to different terminal instances instead of print them in same output stream, say std.err or std.out. for example: I have 5 kinds of information say A-E need to be displayed on different terminal windows on same desktop, looks like [terminal 1] <- for displaying information A [terminal 2] <- for displaying information B [terminal 3] <- for displaying information C [terminal 4] <- for displaying information D [terminal 5] <- for displaying information E I know I can output them into different files, then open terminals read the file in loop, but what I want is python program can open terminal by program itself and print to them directly when it is needed. Is it possible? Thanks! KC

  • Using 'load' in octave

    - by lollygagger
Is there a way to tell the load function to only load until a certain line? I want to read in a data file and assign the numbers to an array, however, I want it to stop after it has created a 200 X 200. Could I also do this with a do-while loop and fgetl? When I try to use fgetl(fid, len) and give it 'len', it does not obey :-/ How can I tell octave to ignore the comment lines in an input file? They are '#' characters, so I figured octave would just automatically ignore them, but not so... Thanks.

  • no match for operator= using a std::vector

    - by Max
I've got a class declared like this: class Level { private: std::vector<mapObject::MapObject> features; (...) }; and in one of its member functions I try to iterate through that vector like this: vector<mapObject::MapObject::iterator it; for(it=features.begin(); it<features.end(); it++) { /* loop code */ } This seems straightforward to me, but g++ gives me this error: src/Level.cpp:402: error: no match for ‘operator=’ in ‘it = ((const yarl::level::Level*)this)-yarl::level::Level::features.std::vector<_Tp, _Alloc::begin [with _Tp = yarl::mapObject::MapObject, _Alloc = std::allocator<yarl::mapObject::MapObject>]()’ /usr/include/c++/4.4/bits/stl_iterator.h:669: note: candidates are: __gnu_cxx::__normal_iterator<yarl::mapObject::MapObject*,std::vector & __gnu_cxx::__normal_iterator<yarl::mapObject::MapObject*,std::vector >::operator=(const __gnu_cxx::__normal_iterator<yarl::mapObject::MapObject*, ``std::vector<yarl::mapObject::MapObject, std::allocator<yarl::mapObject::MapObject> > >&) Anyone know why this is happening?

  • IoC, Containers, and NServiceBus confusion

    - by andy
Hey guys, here's my setup Castle Windsor is my container NServiceBus is itself using it's own container internally, Spring by default I'm implementing the PubSub config. Ok, if I have my Bus.Publish happening within my IWantToRunAtStartup class, then everything is fine. As a test for example on Run() we can start a timer and it'll go into a Service style loop. However, what if I want to abstract NServiceBus from my app, and have my app go: new CustomPulisherClass().Notify(ISomeMessage msg); In this situation, how do I implement CustomPublisherClass. My confusion is coming from the fact that NServiceBus is already running as a Service, it's already been "Started". How to I get at the correct instance of the Bus object? cheers andy
