  • Windows Phone Developer Spotlight: Nikolai Joukov

For my first spotlight post, I interviewed Nikolai Joukov, who is a regular attendee at my local area .NET User Group (CTTDNUG), and has also participated in many of the Mobile and Cloud workshops we have hosted over the past few years. Nikolai stood out immediately, because of his passion for developing mobile apps, his interest in continuous learning, and his drive to publish quality apps that people will find useful and entertaining. Background: Nikolai immigrated to Canada in 1995, and has been working in IT since 1997. He moved on to become an independent contractor in 2005, and has worked at various large scale organizations over the course of his career, including BMO, Enbridge, Economical Insurance, Equitable Life, Manulife and Sun Life. Nikolai is an accomplished Windows Phone and Windows Store publisher, with 11 published Windows Phone apps, and 8 published Windows Store apps. He has almost 6000 downloads and favourable reviews. Q & A with Nikolai How many years have you been developing Windows Phone apps? 2 years When did you develop your very first Windows Phone app, and what was it about? Actually, the very first app I wrote was for the Microsoft “Smart Phone” back in 2004. This phone was given to me by Microsoft during the Developers Days Conference in Toronto. It was some kind of experimental model named Smart Phone, but you had to use VB 3 to develop the applications. Needless to say, this was not very successful at that time. My app was a Stock Trades Calculator. Very primitive, but it was working for me. The phone was heavy and the battery barely lasted 4 hours. Microsoft stopped supporting it few months later and the phone stopped working shortly after, but I still have it as a souvenir. For Windows Phone, my first app was “Trip Packing Assistant”. This is a simple trip packing check list that allows you to list items by category, set required quantity of items, and mark off the item in the list when it is packed. I designed it for me and my wife Galina, since we love to travel and this program helps manage our list for us. How did you get started in Windows Phone development? I have to say thanks to our .NET User Group for introducing me to Windows Phone development. I was intrigued and decided to give it a try. In October 2012 during a 2 day training event that ObjectSharp hosted in London, I met Bruce Johnson. On his advice, I registered for Developer Movement, and it is was a good push to actually complete the apps that I started. You have a great series of travel guide apps both for Windows Phone and Windows Store. Tell us about how you came up with the idea to develop those apps and what process you went through to put it all together. Like I said earlier, my wife and I love to travel. Before I created Trip Packing Assistant, every time we were planning to travel somewhere new, Galina would spend 3-4 weeks doing research. She would create a Word document with all of the information. We didn’t want to have to carry our laptop with us all the time, so we printed out the Word document she created, and would take it with us. After we returned from the trip, we would bring back tons of pictures and materials. Then our friends started to ask us about our materials before they planned their trips to the same places we had visited. So I decided to give it a try and started making apps for Windows Phone and for Windows 8. I hope these applications will help people who are planning to travel. So, all of the pictures used in the travel apps you created were actually taken by you during these amazing trips? Yes Do you have another Windows Store/Windows Phone project in development right now? If so, can you give us a hint at what it will be about? I want to stay with travel apps for now. But this time I will try to write an app for us (Galina and I). Usually we go on the trip, then I write the apps after we have all this beautiful pictures in our hands. We are planning a trip to Rome. This app will not have the pictures, but I want to add a map with points of interest and all information that can be useful for us. Then we will go on our trip and test it on location. As well I am planning to work on my existing apps to make them better. What learning resources would you recommend for other developers that want to get started in Window Store and Windows Phone development? I would start with dev.windowsphone.com to get all tools and samples, also links to training materials. I like MVA (Microsoft Virtual Academy). Their videos are really useful and it is free. Pluralsight is good too but it is not free and I do not have a subscription anymore. Our .NET User Group meetings give good insights too. I went to all meetings and full day training events. When you start to develop your app, you need to do research for specific questions that arise during development. The Developer Portal and Nokia Developer are good resources too. Wrap Up Thanks Nikolai for participating in my first Spotlight blog post! Shown below is Nikolai’s publisher page in the Windows Phone Store and his publisher page in the Windows Store. Simply click on it to be taken to there to check out his portfolio of apps. Be sure to download his apps and try them out! They are all free! • Google OpenID changes?!?!?

    - by Andrea
I'm trying to implement OpenId login for a web application. Whenever new user who logs in via OpenId I create a new user on the sustem, and among the data I store their openid URL, so that next time they login with that user. I'm testing this with my Gmail OpenID, and the problem is that everytime I do this, Google sends a different openid URL, that is, https://www.google.com/accounts/o8/id?id=SomethingThatChangesFromTimeToTime Of course I'm then not able to tell wheter this is or not a new user. I'm a bit puzzled: shouldn't the openid identifier always remain the same?

  • Floodfill with "layers"

    - by user146780
What I want is to create a vector drawing program with layers, but to avoid using transparency / opacity, I want to draw each shape from lowest layer to highest layer onto a single bitmap. For the filling, I want to floodfill the shape. My issue is that, if I have a shape that is drawn then floodfilled, then the next shape overlaps it a bit and that new shape's border is the same as the other one's then floodfill will only partially fill it. Is there a way given a shape's coordinates that I can find the actual bounds for floodfill rather than use a target color? Thanks

  • UITableView, force to snap to whole UITableViewCell at top of table

    - by Adam Eberbach
I have a need to make a UITableView only display whole cells at the top of the cell, so when the table is moved or scrolled it should animate to make a whole cell visible at the top of the table if it has happened to stop with a cell partially off the top. This can be easily done using visibleCells and scrollToRowAtIndexPath methods of UITableView, BUT the cell should not always scroll down to move the partial cell into view - if the cell at top is more than 50% gone it should go completely with the next cell (i.e. index 1 in the array returned by visibleCells) moving to the top of the table. I've tried a few things to make this happen but I don't think I am understanding the way frame and bounds work between a UITableView and its UITableViewCells. Any help?

  • WPF UC in Winforms occasionally has an odd border to the left / visually corrupted

    - by Ryan ONeill
I have a WPF user control I created that is used to show the state of tasks in my UI. I get the odd report back that the control sometimes has a nasty looking border to the left and I cannot reproduce it. The control looks like this (when working) (grey tick=not run, green=OK,red cross=fail, hourglass=running); It looks like this when the problem occurs; It may have something to do with the layering of those icons, when the state changes the others are made invisible and the relevant icon is made visible. The four icons are all stacked on top of each other. It could also be the background in theory, which I'll look at next. Problem is reported on both flat panel and CRT displays. Any guidance greatly appreciated. Update: 1) SnapsToDevicePixels does not affect the issue. 2) Grid is not used, only a canvas.

  • Hadoop 0.2: How to read outputs from TextOutputFormat?

    - by S.N
My reducer class produces outputs with TextOutputFormat (the default OutputFormat given by Job). I like to consume this outputs after the MapReduce job complete to aggregate the outputs. In addition to this, I like to write out the aggregated information with TextInputFormat so that the output from this process can be consumed by the next iteration of MapReduce task. Can anyone give me an example on how to write & read with TextFormat? By the way, the reason why I am using TextFormat, rather Sequence, is the interoperability. The outputs should be consumed by any software.

  • What is needed to get Delphi back on top?

    - by Jim McKeeth
Delphi 2009 is due in the next couple months, which is its 12th release since Turbo Pascal became Delphi in 1995. Despite continued innovation it has not returned to its level of popularity before the Inprise fiasco. Many developers with Delphi backgrounds are moving to C# and many Delphi legacy applications are being rewritten in C#, despite the fact Delphi supports .NET and in many cases the existing application could be ported without rewriting. Is it just a losing battle to compete against Microsoft's tools on their platform? Is there something Code Gear / Delphi can do now that they are under new management to regain market share? What can enthusiasts do to help? Why do you do Delphi programming? or Why are you not doing Delphi programming?

  • Rails: Cannot add :precision or :scale options with change_column in a migration?

    - by Josh Pinter
This seems to have been asked before: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1402547/rails-decimal-precision-and-scale But when running a change_column migration for :precision or :scale they don't actually affect the schema or database, but db:migrate runs without errors. My migration file looks like this: class ChangePrecisionAndScaleOfPaybackPeriodInTags < ActiveRecord::Migration def self.up change_column :tags, :payback_period, :decimal, { :scale => 3, :precision => 10 } end def self.down change_column :tags, :payback_period, :decimal end end But my schema (and the data) remains as: t.decimal "rate" # previous column t.decimal "payback_period" t.string "component_type" # next column Anybody else have this issue? Thanks, Josh

  • iPhone dev question: "No provisioned iPhone OS is connected" error, I don't know what else to try fo

    - by dsobol
Howdy, I am trying to compile and install my first application onto my iPhone after setting up a profile and certificate. At this point I am getting the "No provisioned iPhone OS is connected" error when I Build & Go. I am using iPhone OS 3.1.3, and Xcode 3.2.2 on 10.6.3. • I have verified that my iPhone is connected to my development machine (it is seen on the computer by both iTunes and Xcode Organizer (in Organizer, it has the green dot next to it)). • I have rebooted the iPhone and restarted Xcode multiple times. • I have verified that the Bundle Identifier in my appname.plist is set to com.. (with the appropriate values between the angle brackets). I have looked the error message up on the web, and so far have not found a hint that has gotten me over the hump.... Thanks for any and all assistance! Regards, Steve O'Sullivan

  • How to return a code value into a variable

    - by Georges Sabbagh
I have the below case in my report: Receivable: RunningValue(Fields!Receivable.Value,SUM,Nothing) Production: code.SumLookup(LookupSet(Fields!Currency_Type.Value, Fields!Currency_Type1.Value,Fields!Gross_Premium_Amount.Value, "DataSet2")) Rec/Prod: Receivable / Production. Public Function SumLookup(ByVal items As Object()) As Decimal If items Is Nothing Then Return Nothing End If Dim suma As Decimal = New Decimal() Dim ct as Integer = New Integer() suma = 0 ct = 0 For Each item As Object In items suma += Convert.ToDecimal(item) ct += 1 Next If (ct = 0) Then return 0 else return suma End Function The problem is for Rec/Prod, if prod = 0 i receive error. Ive tried to put the below condition: IIF(code.SumLookup(LookupSet(Fields!Currency_Type.Value, Fields!Currency_Type1.Value,Fields!Gross_Premium_Amount.Value, "DataSet2"))=0,0,RunningValue(Fields!Receivable.Value,SUM,Nothing)/(code.SumLookup(LookupSet(Fields!Currency_Type.Value, Fields!Currency_Type1.Value,Fields!Gross_Premium_Amount.Value, "DataSet2")))) but since in the false condition i am recalling code.SumLookup in order to get the value in regetting 0 for production and consiquently i get error for Rec/Prod. how can i call code.sumlookup on time only and save its value into a variable so i dont need to call it everytime i need to check the value. or if there any other solution please advise.

  • Passing data with Rails' link_to helper

    - by mathee
I am implementing a question-and-answer application with Ruby on Rails. I have MVCs for Questions and Answers. In the home view (index.haml), I list the Questions like this: - @questions.each do |q| %tr %td =link_to q.title, q Next to each of those, I want to add a link that will create a new Answer and pass the id of the Question in that row (continued from the above Haml code) : %td #{link_to 'answer me!', new_answer_path, pass q.id here somehow?} I don't know how to properly pass it and then access it in AnswersController. I tried #{link_to 'answer me!', new_answer_path, :question_id => q.id}, but that was just a guess, and I don't know how to access that in AnswersController. I read the Rails API docs, and I know you can add query, too, but I still don't know how to access the value in AnswersController.

  • click feature in Qt

    - by Solitaire
Hi, I just want to clarify, weather the feature is present or not in Qt. The scenario is like this, I have a list view with items, I want to place the icon to the listview when the item is selected. The selection I mean is, first time when I click item should be selected, next time if I click the same item then it should be selected. Please note It is not the double click. So is there any feature which handles this feature by default, any property or flag which I need to set to listview to behave like this or manual implementation Is required for this.

  • CheckboxList to display aligned?

    - by Earlz
Hello, I made a CheckboxList and it will not line up. I don't see any way to control the generated HTML. Right now, the check boxes do not align due to the widths of the <td> of each checkbox label being an automatic width. How can I set the width of this and make all the labels and checkboxes appear in two vertical aligned columns? My code is simple: <div style="text-align: center;"> <p> Here you will tell.. </p> <asp:CheckBoxList runat="server" ID="cbl" Width="300px"></asp:CheckBoxList> <br /> <input type="button" id="next_3" value="Next Page" /> </div> And here is a screen shot

  • Outlook VBA - Find & Replace Incoming Emails

    - by user1912198
Good morning everyone at Stackoverflow, I am trying to find a VBA script that finds and replaces a certain text in incoming e-mails. So far i've been unable to find such a script that is working. I found several scripts to find and replace stuff in the e-mail but these don't work as a rule on incoming e-mails, they only work on outgoing / creating e-mails. Does anyone have such a script that they can share with me? I would like to find & replace a certain text on every incoming e-mail. I would really apreciate it! Regards, Kris ps: I don't know how to program a whole VBA script, that's why I am asking here :) Current Code: Sub testing(MyMail As MailItem) Dim mail As MailItem Dim Inbox As Outlook.Folder Set Inbox = Session.GetDefaultFolder(olFolderInbox) For Each mail In Inbox.Items 'change subject mail.Subject = "TESTING" 'replace body text If mail.BodyFormat = olFormatHTML Then mail.HTMLBody = Replace(mail.HTMLBody, "Test 123", "TESTING") Else mail.Body = Replace(mail.Body, "Test 123", "TESTING") End If Next mail End Sub

  • How to sound audible bell from crontab

    - by user1526251
The command line: /bin/echo -e "\007" in bash will ring the bell. With the line: /bin/echo -e "\007" in my crontab I expected the bell to ring every minute, but it's silent. I know crontab is working because the line: /bin/touch $HOME/jkjkjk updates the file jkjkjk every minute as it should. I found a posting some years ago suggesting that standard output should be directed to /dev/tty1 in crontab. But the line: /bin/echo "\007" /dev/tty1 Still fails. What to try next?

    - by Roy
Hi, I have just migrated an older ASP solution to a windows 2008 server and everything works out fine except for using ADOX.Catalog to list all the worksheets in an uploaded xls file. I use the following code: <% Set objExcelCon = Server.CreateObject("ADODB.Connection") With objExcelCon .Provider = "Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0" .ConnectionString = "Data Source=" & strFilePath & "\" & strFileName & ";Extended Properties=Excel 12.0;" .Open End With Set objAdo = Server.CreateObject("ADOX.Catalog") ' Set ADOX activeConnection objAdo.activeConnection = objExcelCon ' Loop through tables (worksheets) For i = 0 To objAdo.Tables.Count - 1 response.Write objAdo.Tables(i).Name Next Set objExcelCon = Nothing Set objAdo = Nothing % When I run this i get no error message or anything. Anyone got any idea whats causing this? Best regards, Roy

  • Populate JSP dropdown with database info

    - by Cano63
    I'm looking for the way to populate a JSP dropdown. I want that when the JSP loads it fills the dropdown with the info that I have in a database table. I'm including the code of my class that will create the array and fill it with the database info. What I don't know is how to call that class from my JSP and fill the dropdown. // this will create my array public static ArrayList<DropDownBrands> getBrandsMakes() { ArrayList<DropDownBrands> arrayBrandsMake = new ArrayList<DropDownBrands>(); while (rs.next()) { arrayBrandsMake.add(loadOB(rs)); // CARGO MI ARREGLO CON UN OBJETO } return arrayBrandsMake; } // this will load my array object private static DropDownBrands loadOB(ResultSet rs) throws SQLException { DropDownBrands OB = new DropDownBrands(); OB.setBrands("BRAN"); return OB; }

  • jQuery.ajax checking if there is already another xhr

    - by digitalFresh
I have a page when, if the user is near the bottom of the page, loads the next page. I just recently switched it to jQuery, and now use the jQuery.ajax() function to get the data. However, now i cannot check if the xhr is already loading, making the page load multiple xhrs when the user near the bottom. My listener is: $(document).scroll(function () { if(/* scrollbar is near bottom */) loadxhr(dat++); //function that calls jQuery.ajax() } }); Basically, can you track the readyState of the call in a global scope?

  • Archiving an Entire Rails Site

    - by Pygmalion
I have a Ruby on Rails site that was only needed for a short period of time during which users added various objects to a mySQL database, commenting on them, associating themselves with them, etc. etc. etc. The question is this: the site is no longer needed until a week next year around this time when I will clear the database and use it again (starting from scratch). What's the best way to archive the current site so that the existing content is still viewable but no new content can be added? By best way, I mean the method by which the least system resources will be used, the server will be the safest, etc. Any suggestions?

  • Developing for the iPhone outside Xcode

    - by Federico Builes
I'd like to develop and run my iPhone applications from the command line and my personal editor instead of having to use Xcode. So far I've been able to edit all the files in Emacs and run xcodebuild in the project to compile/link/etc. The next step would be to create a Makefile task to launch the iPhone Simulator with my current application. Any ideas of how can I do that? Update: I'm not interested in XCode calling my editor, I just want to forget about the IDE as much as I can.

  • touchesBegan / Ended incorrectly identifying second, third, etc. touch

    - by Rob
    I have an issue where touchesBegan and touchesEnded are incorrectly identifying my second, third, etc touch if I continue to hold down my first touch. If I lift my finger up off the first touch, then it will recognize the next touch just fine. It's only when I hold my first touch down continuously and then try and touch a different area with a different finger at the same time. It will then incorrectly register that second touch as being from the first touch again. Any insights into how I can fix this? - (void)touchesBegan:(NSSet *)touches withEvent:(UIEvent *)event { UITouch* touch = [touches anyObject]; NSString* filename = [listOfStuff objectAtIndex:[touch view].tag]; // do something with the filename now } - (void)touchesEnded:(NSSet *)touches withEvent:(UIEvent *)event { ITouch* touch = [touches anyObject]; NSString* buttonPressed = [listOfStuff objectAtIndex:[touch view].tag]; // do something with this info now }

  • Code working in jsFiddle but not in browser...

    - by Jascination
I'm trying to run the following code, written on my local machine: http://www.jsfiddle.net/WShdx/3/ Functionality-wise (ignore the broken images in the previous and next buttons, and the wrongly-sized main images) the click/hover function is working properly in jsfiddle. However, on my local machine it's not working at all. For all intents and purposes the code is identical, except the local copy has this head section to load in the javascript/css files that are contained within the jsfiddle page: <head> <title>Jquery Wizard</title> <link href="style.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" /> <script type="text/javascript" src="https://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.4.4/jquery.min.js"></script> <script src="wizard.js" type="text/javascript" ></script> </head> Is there some wonderful function of jsFiddle that is making my code magically work, or am I missing something here?
