• Safely dual-boot XP and Ubuntu 12.04 Desktop?

  My netbook Acer AOD255 has three primary partitions in it by default - PQSERVICE/recovery (NTFS), Android x86 1.6 (FAT32), and the main WinXP Home SP3 (pre-installed, dual-booted with Android from inside WinXP). I was able to resize all three partitions to give 9GB of unallocated space for a future Ubuntu installation, which can already be booted from a pendrive. Here's my problems: 1.) I don't know how to install Ubuntu on that 9GB space (even if I create an unformatted partition for it) 2.) I currently have no means of reinstalling my XP, or backing-up any data (so I don't want to accidentally wipe out my whole HDD at all) 3.) I want XP and Ubuntu to be dual-booted thru a boot manager like GRUB or something more practical (but google searches confuse me) 4.) When I boot to try Ubuntu, GParted displays my whole drive as unallocated space. It also says "can't have overlapping partitions" or something.

  I am developing a multiplayer game for the web, android and ios. For the web and android i can instantly push out new versions of my game because they support executing remotly loaded code. But with IOS i need to wait for an Apple approval taking about 10 days. I want to push updates more then weekly. What if my server code changes so the client MUST update? Run an old version of the server code just for IOS? How do other multiplayer devs handle this ?

• How do I update wine in one wineprefix?

  Does anyone know how I can go about updating the version of wine that one prefix uses without self-destructing everything in it? I want to bring it from 1.4 to 1.5.5 - I read on a forum that someone got the microphone working in Rosetta Stone with Ubuntu 12.04 and wine 1.5.5. Thanks to zuberuber I was able to approach the issue in a different light. :) I made a new prefix called "test" in PlayOnLinux. I compared the new prefix with the Rosetta prefix. It contained a PlayOnLinux.cfg file along with the reg files. It contained: ARCH=x86 VERSION=1.5.0 I copied this over to the Rosetta prefix and adjusted it: ARCH=x86 VERSION=1.4.1 After doing that, I was able to change it from 1.4.1 to 1.5.0. I confirmed it in the prefix's winecfg's About tab.

• Building Enterprise Smartphone App &ndash; Part 2: Platforms and Features

  This is part 2 in a series of posts based on a talk I gave recently at the Chicago Information Technology Architects Group.  Feel free to leave feedback. In the previous post I discussed what reasons a company might have for creating a smartphone application.  In this installment I will cover some of history and state of the different platforms as well as features that can be leveraged for building enterprise smartphone applications. Platforms Before you start choosing a platform to develop your solutions on it is good to understand how we got here and what features you can leverage. History To my memory we owe all of this to a product called the Apple Newton that came out in 1987. It was the first PDA and back then I was much more of an Apple fan.  I was very impressed with this device even though it never really went anywhere.  The Palm Pilot by US Robotics was the next major advancement in PDA. It had a simple short hand window that allowed for quick stylus entry.. Later, Windows CE came out and started the broadening of the PDA market. After that it was the Palm and CE operating systems that started showing up on cell phones and for some time these were the two dominant operating systems that were distributed with devices from multiple hardware vendors. Current The iPhone was the first smartphone to take away the stylus and give us a multi-touch interface.  It was a revolution in usability and really changed the attractiveness of smartphones for the general public.  This brought us to the beginning of the current state of the market with the concept of an online store that makes it easy for customers to get new features and functionality on demand. With Android, Google made this more than a one horse race.  Not only did they come to compete, their low cost actually made them the leading OS.  Of course what made Android so attractive also is its major fault.  It is so open that it has been a target for malware which leaves consumers exposed.  Fortunately for Google though, most consumers aren’t aware of the threat that they are under. Although Microsoft had put out one of the first smart phone operating systems with CE it had to play catch up and finally came out with the Windows Phone.  They have gone for a market approach between those of iOS and Android.  They support multiple hardware vendors like Google, but they kept a certification process for applications that is similar to Apple.  They also created a user interface that was different enough to give it a clear separation from the other two platforms. The result of all this is hundreds of millions of smartphones being sold monthly across all three platforms giving us a wide range of choices and challenges when it comes to developing solutions. Features So what are the features that make these devices flexible enough be considered for use in the enterprise? The biggest advantage of today's devices is network connectivity.  The ability to access information from multiple sources at a moment’s notice is critical for businesses.  Add to that the ability to communicate over a variety of text, voice and video modes and we have a powerful starting point. Every smartphone has a cameras and they are not just useful for posting to Instagram. We are seeing more applications such as Bing vision that allow us to scan just about any printed code or text to find information.  These capabilities have been made available to developers in the form of standard libraries for reading barcodes of just about an flavor and optical character recognition (OCR) interpretation. Bluetooth give us the ability to communicate with multiple devices. Whether these are headsets, keyboard or printers the wireless communication capabilities are just starting to evolve.  The more these wireless communication protocols grow, the more opportunities we will see to transfer data between users and a variety of devices. Local storage of information that can be called up even when the device cannot reach the network is the other big capability.  This give users the ability to work offline as well and transmit information when connections are restored. These are the tools that we have to work with to build applications that can be leveraged to gain a competitive advantage for companies that implement them. • Is there a way to emulate pinch-zoom?

  I'm looking for a way to emulate pinch zoom in either an android emulator(android SDK-less desirable) or a (preferred) native Ubuntu web browser that I can resize to a specified size for initial testing of HTML5 applications. This is would be useful for first round testing during cross-platform application development. Note: I'm trying to do this with no real touch-device only a mouse. So the best answer would be something like "Install this chromium plug-in and use this hotkey to set pinch points" or something similar. We already have this for getting dual mouse working(thanks AmithKK). The browser that supports multi-touch is the hard part. Something to note is that I start getting screen artifacts using multiple mice via that guide. They're mild and tolerable, but they are there.

• How to reset setting of Wine, avoiding uninstalling all applications in it?

  Foobar2000 volume slider stopped working in Wine Sound is good but volume cannot be changed from the player's slider anymore. Is there a setting in Wine that might have entailed this? I have tested [Vineyard][1] (also) and then gave it up on which occasion some setting in Wine might have been altered but cannot see which. Edit: This affects the main installation (v.1.1.15) made in Wine, and also portable installations of the same version (as well as portable installations of v.1.1.14 and 1.1.17b that I tested) but does not affect older versions like 1.0.3. After testing more versions, it seems that the newest version without this problem is 1.1. (That is, before the version that changed the classic white-on-black Foobar2000 icon with the new white one.)

• JCP.Next Progress Updates

  JSR 355, JCP Executive Committee Merge, is currently nearing the end of the Public Review period.  Review the current draft here and provide feedback here.  The review closes on 12 June 2012.  The JCP Executive Committee met face to face in Sao Paulo, Brazil earlier in May, and has published a revision (version 2.1) of the EC Standing Rules.  The EC Standing Rules were introduced in October 2011 with the launch of JCP version 2.8 (JSR 348).  Version 2.1 of the EC Standing Rules will modify rules for attendance at EC face-to-face meetings. Remote observers will be permitted in "read-only" mode but unless a member attends in person they will be counted as absent.  The review period for these changes will close on June 30 2012.  Please comment on the proposed changes by logging an issue in the JCP EC issue tracker.

• design practice for business layer when supporting API versioning

  Is there any design pattern or practice recommended for business layer when dealing with multiple API version. For example, I have something like this. http://site.com/blogs/v1/?count=10 which calls business object method GetAllBlogs(int count) to get information http://site.com/blogs/v2/?blog_count=20 which calls business object method GetAllBlogs_v2(int blogCounts) Since parameter name is changed, I created another business method for version 2. This is just one example but it could have other breaking changes for which it requires me to create another method to support both version. Is there any design pattern or best practice for business/data access layer I should follow when supporting API Versioning?

• Kernel panic when booting from USB

  I downloaded ubuntu-11.04-desktop-amd64.iso and used Universal-USB-Installer-1.8.6.3.exe to format my USB stick und put the ISO on it. When I tried to install from it, I've got a kernel panic just like here, except for the version number (mine was 2.6.38-8-generic #42-ubuntu). My ISO image seems to work, as I installed it into a VMWare player without problems. Booting Linux from USB works surely too, as I did it some time ago with an older Ubuntu version. I can imagine things to try out, e.g., write the image again, try another version, pray, look for patches, etc. However, I'm looking for a time-efficient solution, something what most probably works. An advice of the sort "wait two weeks until it's surely fixed, then download again" is acceptable, I'm determined to switch to Linux, but it can wait a bit.

  Current version of GCC in Ubuntu 11.04 is 4.5.2. For certain C++0x features, I need GCC version 4.6, but would like to avoid compiling from source. Is there hope that Ubuntu will update GCC in the package repository before the next release in October (11.10). This question asks a similar thing except for an earlier version of Ubuntu and GCC. A second part of the question, if the answer is "no" to the first, then can I hope to see it appear in Ubuntu's unstable repository?

  I plan to make a set of classic socket functions to simplify their usages. Since i work under windows and linux indifferently i usually make it portable (it's not my first version of this set of functions), but i want to do something different this time and dedicate one version to windows, and one other to linux. With that i wonder for the windows version, if the WSA* functions can have any interest using them instead of the psock ones. I have found nothing about a comparison between them, so if any of you have any idea, suggestion, link or benchmark ?
