• Use an unsigned driver in Windows 7 x64

  I'm trying to use the RBC9 SpaceNavigator TEST x64 build drivers for my SpaceNavigator 3d joystick so that it can work as a normal joystick in games like Quake. Unfortunately, I get the error "This version of windows requires all drivers to have a valid digital signature" and in the "Device status" in device manager, I get "Windows cannot verify the digital signature for the drivers required for this device. A recent hardware or software change might have installed a file that is signed incorrectly or damaged, or that might be malicious software from an unknown source. (Code 52)". Is there a way to work around this issue?

• Incremental backups from Rackspace Cloud Files to Amazon Glacier

  Is there a software product/module (open-source or commercial) that can provide incremental backups from Rackspace Cloud Files to Amazon Glacier? We are looking for something that will provide the following functionality (or achieve the same result, i.e. a cost-effective backup strategy for files stored in Rackspace Cloud Files): Work out which files have been added to or modified in a Rackspace Cloud account (since the last backup). Create a ZIP (or similar) of these files and store them in Amazon Glacier. Keep a record of which files are in which ZIPs. Ideally, restore either a single file or all files from Glacier back into Rackspace.

• Manager keeps changing requirement specification after every demo.

  Background of my working environment My manager has no background or understanding of computers or software whatsoever. It is highly likely he hasn't seen code in any form (not even from a physical distance of 10 feet or less) in his life. There is no one who understands the complexity of what I am asked to implement. To the point that if I semi-hardcode no one would know. On Joel's test we score an unbelievable score 0. The problems The manager and at times other "senior" keep changing the requirement specification. Changes which, if good engineering be done and not patchy "fixes", require change in the underlying design. There is absolutely no one who looks at code (probably because no one knows how to, or even if it should be done) which means no one will ever be able to: Appreciate the complexity of the problem or the elegance of the solution. Suggest improvement to the approach. Appreciate the quality of the code. Point out where the code can be improved. A lot of jargon is used which makes sense grammatically but fails to make any sense any other way. Doesn't feel, behave or work like a software company. The question What should be done? Especially regarding there being no one who would point out improvements in my code. Update To answer HLGEM's (and possibly others) question about what I've done to try and fix it. I offered to set up Redmine and introduce source control to everyone. I said I would recommend distributed (git or mercurial) but will also talk about centralized ones and let the team decide. Response was that things are being done and will be done within weeks. Haven't seen that nor am I aware if other parts of the company use it.

• SSIS Reporting Pack – a performance tip

  SSIS Reporting Pack is a suite of open source SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) reports that provide additional insight into the SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) 2012 Catalog. You can read more about SSIS Reporting Pack here on my blog or had over to the home page for the project at http://ssisreportingpack.codeplex.com/. After having used SSRS Reporting Pack on a real project for a few months now I have come to realise that if you have any sizeable data volumes in [SSISDB] then the reports in SSIS Reporting Pack will suffer from chronic performance problems – I have seen the “execution” report take upwards of 30minutes to return data. To combat this I highly recommend that you create an index on the [SSISDB].[internal].[event_messages].[operation_id] & [SSISDB].[internal].[operation_messages].[operation_id] fields. Phil Brammer has experienced similar problems himself and has since made it easy for the rest of us by preparing some scripts to create the indexes that he recommends and he has shared those scripts via his blog at http://www.ssistalk.com/SSIS_2012_Missing_Indexes.zip. If you are using SSIS Reporting Pack, or even if you are simply querying [SSISDB], I highly recommend that you download Phil’s scripts and test them out on your own SSIS Catalog(s). Those indexes will not solve all problems but they will make some of your reports run quicker. I am working on some further enhancements that should further improve the performance of the reports. After spending a lot of time searching for this, I thought that some SuperUser gurus might know the answer :) I'm searching for an open source application to compute an FFT, that could: * Import a list of points from a text file (in any format, I could write conversion scripts if needed), for example 0,1; 1,2; 4,5 * Compute the associated discrete transform, and output the list of coefficients Ideally, it would also display the plot and the associated fourier decomposition on the same graph, to allow comparison, but this is not absolutely needed. It can be either on Windows or on Linux/Unix. Can you think of a solution? Thanks, CFP.

  The Portable Document Format (PDF) is a popular file format for documents. Due to their ubiquity and layout capabilities, it's not uncommon for a websites to use PDF technology. For example, an eCommerce store may offer a "printable receipt" option that, when selected, displays a PDF file within the browser. Last week's article, Filling in PDF Forms with ASP.NET and iTextSharp, looked at how to work with a special kind of PDF document, namely one that has one or more fields defined. A PDF document can contain various types of user interface elements, which are referred to as fields. For instance, there is a text field, a checkbox field, a combobox field, and more. Typically, the person viewing the PDF on her computer interacts with the document's fields; however, it is possible to enumerate and fill a PDF's fields programmatically, as we saw in last week's article. This article continues our investigation into iTextSharp, a .NET open source library for PDF generation, showing how to use iTextSharp to create PDF documents from scratch. We start with an example of how to programmatically define and piece together paragraphs, tables, and images into a single PDF file.   I kind of screwed up the Apache "stuff" on my Mac. Usually when I visit http://localhost/, I would see the "It Works!" but now it just lists the directory and files inside /Library/WebServer/Documents. When I try to stop/start/restart the server with sudo apachectl stop, I get: httpd: Syntax error on line 68 of /etc/apache2/httpd.conf: Cannot load /usr/libexec/apache2/mod_disk_cache.so into server: dlopen(/usr/libexec/apache2/mod_disk_cache.so, 10): Symbol not found: _apr_file_info_get$INODE64\n Referenced from: /usr/libexec/apache2/mod_disk_cache.so\n Expected in: flat namespace\n in /usr/libexec/apache2/mod_disk_cache.so I don't want to do the MacPorts install, I tried it earlier but... I just want to do it via source code with the usual ./configure, make, make install. Any ideas on how to get this working? Is there a way to totally remove Apache and then reinstall a fresh version? • Need help with Microsoft Access 07 & Reports

  I'm finding it difficult to get MS reporting working to what I'd like to show. What I'm trying to do is: a) In my database store a URL file (HTTP external file), that is a .jpeg. I'd like to use that URL to call the image on the report sheet. I have tried to use 'Control source' on the data panel, but with no success. Any way I can get Dynamic Images to show up on each database. Also, I have a couple of Relational Databases. One Defines Values: For Example: DefinePets('petID','Name of Pet') The other one links the Main DB with the 'DefinePets' database. Eg: connect('petID','mainID','extraFeild') I'd like my report to Go into the "connect" Table, where the the currently viewed Record Value = mainID, then find petID and return Name of Pet. There is a many to many link between definePets and the main Table. (Therefore connect is joining them up) Or is that too much to ask from a simple package like Access?

• How can I deskew and crop PDFs made from scanned pages *automatically*? [closed]

  I have several PDFs made up of book pages' scans. The scans are made from two pages at a time and some of these scans are skewed, making text appear slightly tilted. I'm looking for a tool that could allow me to do an automatic optimization by deskewing the scans without losing readability. I've found the GPL software briss to crop the scans in order to have a 1:1 page ratio instead of 2:1, but I don't have any tool to deskew the pages. I stumbled upon unpaper, another open source tool that seems perfect for what I want to do, but that tool is Linux only and it doesn't work on PDF files directly. Any hint is appreciated.

  I have a an excel sheet with: in Col A: week numbers in Col B: dates (timesheet entries) I need to know the number of days worked for each week, so I need to the number of unique date entries per week number. I found formula's (both array as non-array) that handle this for a fixed range, but I want to have the results in another column per week number. • Stable ubuntu distribution for a broadcom bcm4313 wireless driver and an nvidia 630 graphics adapter

  I have been trying to completely shift to ubuntu or a linux distro for almost 2 years now. I have tried all the ubuntu distros starting from 10.04 through 11.10, but there has always been some bugs with the display drivers or the wireless cards not being recognised and the additional drivers suggested from the ubuntu community not doing the trick always. I tried a lot to fix bugs, checked a lot of forums, launch pad, got some of them fixed, but could not really get a neat and complete ubuntu machine set up till now. Now I really like the whole open source community and the linux platform, my pc at home runs ubuntu 11.04 perfectly but there have been some glitches always with ubuntu on my laptop that has forced me to stick with windows only. Now I am currently on an hp dv6 laptop that has the broadcom bcm4313 wireless driver and the nvidia 630gtm graphics(optimus) driver. Now I tried to do some research on the support of these drivers in linux machines but could not get anywhere. So I would really appreciate if you guys could suggest some linux distro that I could use that has full support of these drivers or has stable bug fixes for these kind of issues. I tried precise pangolin (LTS) through a live CD but i still see a problem with wifi networks which is a little frustrating. Please help me find the perfect match for my laptop :P I would gladly provide any other information necessary.

• Thoughts on web development architecture through integrating C++ in the future to a web application

  I'm looking to build a website (it's actually going to be a commercial startup) I saw this question and it really shed some light on a few things that I was hoping to understand (kudos to the op). After seeing that, it would make sense that, unless the website were required to actually have millions of hits per day, it wouldn't be a viable solution to write a C++ backend on the server side. But this got me thinking. what if it in the (unlikely) events of the future, it does go that route? The problem is that, while I'm thinking of starting this all using .Net (in the beginning) just to get something quick and easy up without a lot of hassle (in terms of learning), and then moving towards something more Open Source (such as Python/Django or RoR) later to save money and to support OSS, I'm wondering IFF the website actually becomes big, will it be a good idea to integrate a C++ backend, and use Python ontop of C++ for a strong foundation, and then mitigate HTML/CSS/AJAX/etc ontop of the backend's foundation? I guess, what I'd like to know is that, given the circumstance, if this were to happen, would it be a proper approach in terms of architecture? I'd definitely be supporting MVC as that seems to be a great way to implement a website. All in all, would one consider this rational, or are there other alternatives? I like .Net, and I'd like to use it in the beginning, because I have much more experience with that than, say, Python or PHP, and I prefer it in general, but I really do want to support OSS in the future. I suppose the sentence I'm looking for is, "is this pragmatic?"

  Website is developed on JSF, Servlet, using apache web server. In my website, I accept data submission from few restricted websites using HTTP POST method. We exchange some secure key to ensure that correct source is sending data. But is there any way to ensure that the data is submitted from specific domain / IP address only? In application level I can check request.header('Referer') , but some proxy or firewall might hide the referer. Can this configuration done on firewall or webserver level to authenticate server to server communication? Eg. Say my website is a payment gateway website, integrated with www.abc.com. I want only abc.com to submit data. So a user using abc.com should be able to submit data to my website only through abc.com, and not any other website.

• Indian school boy never misses a class for 14 years. Applies for Gunnies Records

  If you ask the question “What is the most fun activity?” to school or college kids, most of the kids would say “bunking classes”. Many of us are grown up bunking classes in the name of stomachache, relatives marriage, high fever, rain or some other reason. Here is a wonder kid who is an exception of regular school kids. Mohammed Omar, a 17 year Indian school boy, never skipped his classes for the past 14 years. His attendance records shows 100% for all the 14 years of school he attended so far and it’s an unbelievable track record. Omar lives in Kanpur, a suburban in Uttar Pradesh with parents and a younger brother. He attended school even when the area where he lives was once flooded, had high temperature. When flooded and motor vehicles were not able to run on the streets he loaned a bicycle from neighbors. When he was on high temperature he just popped a tablet and headed towards the school.  Whatever may be the adverse situation, he just found a way to attend school instead of bunking. He recently applied for Guinness Book of World Records. The determination of the boy is incredible and inspiration to many young.   One nice feature that code contracts offer is updating of code documentation. If you are using source code documenting features of Visual Studio then code contracts may automate some tasks you otherwise have to implement manually. In this posting I will show you some XML documentation files with documented contracts. I will also explain how this feature works. Enabling XML-documentation in project settings As a first thing let’s enable generating of code documentation under project settings. Open project properties, move to Build page and make check to checkbox called “XML documentation file”. Save project settings and rebuild project. When project is built go to bin/Debug folder and open the XML-file. Messages that I provided with code contracts are also available in documentation. If I wrote very good and informative messages then these messages are very useful also in contracts documentation. Code contracts and Sandcastle Sandcastle knows nothing about code contracts by default. There is separate package of file for Sandcastle that is provided you by code contracts installation. You can read from code contracts manual: “Sandcastle (http://www.codeplex.com/Sandcastle) is a freely available tool that generates help les and web sites describing your APIs, based on the XML doc comments in your source code. The CodeContracts install contains a set of les that can be copied over a Sandcastle installation to take advantage of the additional contract information. The produced documentation adds a contract section to methods with declared requires and/or ensures. In order for Sandcastle to produce Contract sections, you need to patch a number of files in its installation. Please refer to the Sandcastle Readme.txt found under Start Menu/CodeContracts/Sandcastle for instructions. A future release of Sandcastle will hopefully support contract sections without the need for this patching step.” Integrating code contracts documentation to Sandcastle will be one of my next postings about code contracts. Conclusion if you are using code documentation then documentation about code contracts can be added to documentation very easily. All you have to do is to enable XML-documentation for contracts and build your project. Later you can use Sandcastle files provided by code contracts installer to integrate contracts documentation to your output documentation package.

• Compiling PHP 5.3.3 on Ubuntu 8.04: Could not find libevent

  When attempting to ./configure PHP 5.3.3 on Ubuntu 8.04, I get the error: checking for libevent >= 1.4.11 install prefix... configure: error: Could not find libevent >= 1.4.11 in /usr/local/ I tried installing the libevent-dev and libevent1 packages, but same error. I then removed the packages, downloaded and compiled libevent from source. Same error. Locate shows that libevent was installed to /usr/local/lib/libevent.so with all its friends in /usr/local/lib/. I tried configuring with the option: --with-libevent-dir=/usr/local/lib/ Basically the same error: checking for libevent >= 1.4.11 install prefix... configure: error: Could not find libevent >= 1.4.11 in /usr/local/lib/ Any suggestions??

• Cannot FTP without simultaneous SSH connection?

  I'm trying to set up an old box as a backup server (running 10.04.4 LTS). I intend to use 3rd party software on my PC to periodically connect to my server via FTP(S) and to mirror certain files. For some reason, all FTP connection attempts fail UNLESS I'm simultaneously connected via SSH. For example, if I use putty to test the connection to port 21, the system hangs and times out. I get: 220 Connected to LeServer USER lucas 331 Please specify the password. PASS [password] <cursor> However, when I'm simultaneously logged in (in another session) everything works: 220 Connected to LeServer USER lucas 331 Please specify the password. PASS [password] 230 Login successful. Basically, this means that my software will never be able to connect on its own, as intended. I know that the correct port is open because it works (sometimes) and nmap gives me: Starting Nmap 5.00 ( http://nmap.org ) at 2012-03-20 16:15 CDT Interesting ports on xx.xxx.xx.x: Not shown: 995 closed ports PORT STATE SERVICE 21/tcp open ftp 22/tcp open ssh 53/tcp open domain 139/tcp open netbios-ssn 445/tcp open microsoft-ds Nmap done: 1 IP address (1 host up) scanned in 0.15 seconds My only hypothesis is that this has something to do with iptables. Maybe it's allowing only established connections? I don't think that's how I set it up, but maybe?
