• GNU make copy files to distro directory

  I keep my source html (and images etc.) in separate directories for source control. Part of making the distro is to have make copy files to output folder and set the attributes. Today my makefile shows (extract): %.html: /usr/bin/install -c -p -m 644 $< $@ www: $(HTMLDST)/firmware.html $(HTMLDST)/firmware_status.html $(HTMLDST)/index.html $(HTMLDST)/firmware.html: $(HTMLSRC)/firmware.html $(HTMLDST)/firmware_status.html: $(HTMLSRC)/firmware_status.html $(HTMLDST)/index.html: $(HTMLSRC)/index.html This is shown with only three html files, but in reality, there are lots. I would like to just list the filenames (without paths) and have make do the comparison between source and destination and copy the files that have been updated. Thank you in advance Søren

• Get XML from Server for Use on Windows Phone

  When working with mobile devices you always need to take into account bandwidth usage and power consumption. If you are constantly connecting to a server to retrieve data for an input screen, then you might think about moving some of that data down to the phone and cache the data on the phone. An example would be a static list of US State Codes that you are asking the user to select from. Since this is data that does not change very often, this is one set of data that would be great to cache on the phone. Since the Windows Phone does not have an embedded database, you can just use an XML string stored in Isolated Storage. Of course, then you need to figure out how to get data down to the phone. You can either ship it with the application, or connect and retrieve the data from your server one time and thereafter cache it and retrieve it from the cache. In this blog post you will see how to create a WCF service to retrieve data from a Product table in a database and send that data as XML to the phone and store it in Isolated Storage. You will then read that data from Isolated Storage using LINQ to XML and display it in a ListBox. Step 1: Create a Windows Phone Application The first step is to create a Windows Phone application called WP_GetXmlFromDataSet (or whatever you want to call it). On the MainPage.xaml add the following XAML within the “ContentPanel” grid: <StackPanel>  <Button Name="btnGetXml"          Content="Get XML"          Click="btnGetXml_Click" />  <Button Name="btnRead"          Content="Read XML"          IsEnabled="False"          Click="btnRead_Click" />  <ListBox Name="lstData"            Height="430"            ItemsSource="{Binding}"            DisplayMemberPath="ProductName" /></StackPanel> Now it is time to create the WCF Service Application that you will call to get the XML from a table in a SQL Server database. Step 2: Create a WCF Service Application Add a new project to your solution called WP_GetXmlFromDataSet.Services. Delete the IService1.* and Service1.* files and the App_Data folder, as you don’t generally need these items. Add a new WCF Service class called ProductService. In the IProductService class modify the void DoWork() method with the following code: [OperationContract]string GetProductXml(); Open the code behind in the ProductService.svc and create the GetProductXml() method. This method (shown below) will connect up to a database and retrieve data from a Product table. public string GetProductXml(){  string ret = string.Empty;  string sql = string.Empty;  SqlDataAdapter da;  DataSet ds = new DataSet();   sql = "SELECT ProductId, ProductName,";  sql += " IntroductionDate, Price";  sql += " FROM Product";   da = new SqlDataAdapter(sql,    ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["Sandbox"].ConnectionString);   da.Fill(ds);   // Create Attribute based XML  foreach (DataColumn col in ds.Tables[0].Columns)  {    col.ColumnMapping = MappingType.Attribute;  }   ds.DataSetName = "Products";  ds.Tables[0].TableName = "Product";  ret = ds.GetXml();   return ret;} After retrieving the data from the Product table using a DataSet, you will want to set each column’s ColumnMapping property to Attribute. Using attribute based XML will make the data transferred across the wire a little smaller. You then set the DataSetName property to the top-level element name you want to assign to the XML. You then set the TableName property on the DataTable to the name you want each element to be in your XML. The last thing you need to do is to call the GetXml() method on the DataSet object which will return an XML string of the data in your DataSet object. This is the value that you will return from the service call. The XML that is returned from the above call looks like the following: <Products>  <Product ProductId="1"           ProductName="PDSA .NET Productivity Framework"           IntroductionDate="9/3/2010"           Price="5000" />  <Product ProductId="3"           ProductName="Haystack Code Generator for .NET"           IntroductionDate="7/1/2010"           Price="599.00" />  ...  ...  ... </Products> The GetProductXml() method uses a connection string from the Web.Config file, so add a <connectionStrings> element to the Web.Config file in your WCF Service application. Modify the settings shown below as needed for your server and database name. <connectionStrings>  <add name="Sandbox"        connectionString="Server=Localhost;Database=Sandbox;                         Integrated Security=Yes"/></connectionStrings> The Product Table You will need a Product table that you can read data from. I used the following structure for my product table. Add any data you want to this table after you create it in your database. CREATE TABLE Product(  ProductId int PRIMARY KEY IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL,  ProductName varchar(50) NOT NULL,  IntroductionDate datetime NULL,  Price money NULL) Step 3: Connect to WCF Service from Windows Phone Application Back in your Windows Phone application you will now need to add a Service Reference to the WCF Service application you just created. Right-mouse click on the Windows Phone Project and choose Add Service Reference… from the context menu. Click on the Discover button. In the Namespace text box enter “ProductServiceRefrence”, then click the OK button. If you entered everything correctly, Visual Studio will generate some code that allows you to connect to your Product service. On the MainPage.xaml designer window double click on the Get XML button to generate the Click event procedure for this button. In the Click event procedure make a call to a GetXmlFromServer() method. This method will also need a “Completed” event procedure to be written since all communication with a WCF Service from Windows Phone must be asynchronous.  Write these two methods as follows: private const string KEY_NAME = "ProductData"; private void GetXmlFromServer(){  ProductServiceClient client = new ProductServiceClient();   client.GetProductXmlCompleted += new     EventHandler<GetProductXmlCompletedEventArgs>      (client_GetProductXmlCompleted);   client.GetProductXmlAsync();  client.CloseAsync();} void client_GetProductXmlCompleted(object sender,                                   GetProductXmlCompletedEventArgs e){  // Store XML data in Isolated Storage  IsolatedStorageSettings.ApplicationSettings[KEY_NAME] = e.Result;   btnRead.IsEnabled = true;} As you can see, this is a fairly standard call to a WCF Service. In the Completed event you get the Result from the event argument, which is the XML, and store it into Isolated Storage using the IsolatedStorageSettings.ApplicationSettings class. Notice the constant that I added to specify the name of the key. You will use this constant later to read the data from Isolated Storage. Step 4: Create a Product Class Even though you stored XML data into Isolated Storage when you read that data out you will want to convert each element in the XML file into an actual Product object. This means that you need to create a Product class in your Windows Phone application. Add a Product class to your project that looks like the code below: public class Product{  public string ProductName{ get; set; }  public int ProductId{ get; set; }  public DateTime IntroductionDate{ get; set; }  public decimal Price{ get; set; }} Step 5: Read Settings from Isolated Storage Now that you have the XML data stored in Isolated Storage, it is time to use it. Go back to the MainPage.xaml design view and double click on the Read XML button to generate the Click event procedure. From the Click event procedure call a method named ReadProductXml().Create this method as shown below: private void ReadProductXml(){  XElement xElem = null;   if (IsolatedStorageSettings.ApplicationSettings.Contains(KEY_NAME))  {    xElem = XElement.Parse(     IsolatedStorageSettings.ApplicationSettings[KEY_NAME].ToString());     // Create a list of Product objects    var products =         from prod in xElem.Descendants("Product")        orderby prod.Attribute("ProductName").Value        select new Product        {          ProductId = Convert.ToInt32(prod.Attribute("ProductId").Value),          ProductName = prod.Attribute("ProductName").Value,          IntroductionDate =             Convert.ToDateTime(prod.Attribute("IntroductionDate").Value),          Price = Convert.ToDecimal(prod.Attribute("Price").Value)        };     lstData.DataContext = products;  }} The ReadProductXml() method checks to make sure that the key name that you saved your XML as exists in Isolated Storage prior to trying to open it. If the key name exists, then you retrieve the value as a string. Use the XElement’s Parse method to convert the XML string to a XElement object. LINQ to XML is used to iterate over each element in the XElement object and create a new Product object from each attribute in your XML file. The LINQ to XML code also orders the XML data by the ProductName. After the LINQ to XML code runs you end up with an IEnumerable collection of Product objects in the variable named “products”. You assign this collection of product data to the DataContext of the ListBox you created in XAML. The DisplayMemberPath property of the ListBox is set to “ProductName” so it will now display the product name for each row in your products collection. Summary In this article you learned how to retrieve an XML string from a table in a database, return that string across a WCF Service and store it into Isolated Storage on your Windows Phone. You then used LINQ to XML to create a collection of Product objects from the data stored and display that data in a Windows Phone list box. • Authentication on odata service

  I want to add some authentication to my odata service. Depending on the user calling i want to: filter rows and/or remove columns. I read in scott hanselmans fine blogpost on odata ( http://www.hanselman.com/blog/CreatingAnODataAPIForStackOverflowIncludingXMLAndJSONIn30Minutes.aspx )that it is possible to intercept the incoming queries. If this works i could add some extra filtering. How would this intercepting and altering queries work exactly? I can not find any examples of where and how to do this. (i'm using entitie framework and wcf dataservices (just like scotts example blog)

• Xcode license agreement different than Apple Developer Agreement?

  The Apple Developer Agreement (on their website when signing up for a developer account) says: "Apple reserves the right, at its discretion, to modify this Agreement, including any rules and policies at any time." And also: "You agree to follow Apple's Guidelines For Using Apple Trademarks and Copyrights as published on Apple's website at www.apple.com/legal/guidelinesfor3rdparties.html ("Guidelines") and as may be modified from time to time." If I buy a Mac with OS X, it comes with Xcode, correct? In that case what does the license agreement for Xcode say? Does it contain the clauses above, or anything similar? If anyone wants to post a copy of the license agreement here, that would be helpful, but I'm not sure if copyright would allow that.

• Change the default Icon on your jQuery UI Accordion

  I've got this question in one of my previous blogs posted here (the same blog is posted on codeasp.net too), dealing with jQuery UI Accordion and I thought it's nice to recap this in a blog post so that I will have it documented for further reference. In the previous blog, I'm creating tabs content navigation using jQuery UI Accordion. So, it's quite simple code and all I do there is calling accordion() function. <script language="javascript" type="text/javascript">     $(function() {         $("#products").accordion();     }); </script> The default image icons for each item is the arrow. The accordion uses the right arrow and down arrow images. So, what we should do in order to change them? JQuery UI Accordion contains option with name icons that has header and headerSelected properties. We can override them with either the existing classes from jQuery UI themes or with our own. 1. Using existing jQuery UI Theme classes - Open the follownig link: http://jqueryui.com/themeroller/#icons You will see the icons available in the jQuery UI theme. Mouse over on each icon and you will see the class name for each icon. As you can see, each icon has class name constructed in the following way: ui-icon-<name> All icons in one image - In our example, I will use ui-icon-circle-plus  and ui-icon-circle-minus (plus and minus icons). - Lets set the icons <script language="javascript" type="text/javascript">     $(function() {         //initialize accordion                 $("#products").accordion();         //set accordion header options         $("#products").accordion("option", "icons",         { 'header': 'ui-icon-circle-plus', 'headerSelected': 'ui-icon-circle-minus' });     }); </script> From the code above, you can see that I first intialize the accordion plugin, and after I override the default icons with the ui-icon-circle-plyus for header and ui-icon-circle-minus for headerSelected. Here is the end result: So, now you see we have the plus/minus circle icons for the default header state and the selected header state.   2. Add my own icons - If you want to add your own icons, you can do that by creating your own custom css classes. - Lets create classes for both, the header default state and header selected state <style type="text/css">     .defaultIcon     {         background-image: url(images/icons/defaultIcon.png) !important;         width: 25px;         height: 25px;     }     .selectedIcon     {         background-image: url(images/icons/selectedIcon.png) !important;         width: 25px;         height: 25px;     } </style> As you can see, I use my own images placed in images/icons/ folder - default icon - selected icon One very important thing to note here is the !important key added on each background-image property. It's like that in order to give highest importancy to our image so that the default jQuery UI theme icon images will have less importancy and won't be used. And the jQuery code is: <script language="javascript" type="text/javascript">     $(function() {         //initialize accordion                 $("#products").accordion();         //set accordion header options         $("#products").accordion("option", "icons",         { 'header': 'defaultIcon', 'headerSelected': 'selectedIcon' });     }); </script> Note: For both #1 and #2 cases, we use the class names without adding . (dot) at the beginning of the name (as we do with selectors). That's because the the header and headerSelected properties accept classes only as a value, so the rest is done by the plugin itself.   I am working on a website in PHP where people can make comments similar to a blog, and I only want particular tags to be allowed. Are there any pre-built libraries that process comments and produce valid XHTML Strict code? I would need to do this in JavaScript so I can generate a live preview like Stack Overflow, plus in PHP before saving it to a MySQL database. The allowed HTML tags will be: strong, em, blockquote, and links (rel=nofollow not required) One way would be to allow people to directly enter the HTML into the comment field but I would prefer to use a simple mark up something like this (can be different - this is an example): *strong* _em_ [blockquote] http://www.link.com I want line breaks to be converted to <br />. Are there any code libraries that do the above?

The resolution is to migrate the site over to one of our dedicated, private servers. This process will take 24-36 hours to complete. What do I say to my boss and client? Do I blame Network Solutions? Do I blame WordPress (we recommended it)? Do I just tell each person it is being fixed and everything is just fine?

• How to start a process from within a windows service

  I want to pop a browser with a given url from within a windows service. Like so: System.Diagnostics.Process.Start("http://www.venganza.org/"); Works fine when running in a console but not from within the service. No error messages, no exceptions, the Process.Start() command just seem to do nothing. It smells of some security issue, maybe something with the service properties and/or logon options? Annoying stuff this... Anybody? (Oh, and on windows 7/.NET framework 3.5.)

• Serverside image processing

  I am designing a web application that does server side image processing in real time. Processing tasks include applying different effects like grayscale, blur, oil paint, pencil sketch etc on images in various formats. I want to build it using java/servlets which I am already familiar with. I found 3 options, 1) Use pure java imaging libraries like java.awt or http://www.jhlabs.com/ip/index.html 2) Use command line tools like Gimp/ImageMagick 3) Use c,c++ image libraries that have java bindings. I don't know which of the above options is good keeping the performance in mind. It looks like option 2) and 3) are good performance wise, but I want to be sure before I rule out 1). I have also heard gimp cannot be run using command line unless gtk or xwindows is already installed on the server. Will there be any such problems with 2) or 3) while running them server side? Also please suggest any good image processing libraries for this purpose.

• CurvyCorners in Wordpress Theme only rounds some corners in IE - what am I doing wrong?

  Hi, I'm implementing the CurvyCorners script on a blog I'm developing. The script works in IE on some parts of the blog, but not others. I don't know if this has something to do with the fact the theme I'm using (Pure II by beathemes) has placed the left side in the footer.php?

• Unicode characters in URLs

  In 2010, would you serve URLs containing UTF-8 characters in a large web portal? Unicode characters are forbidden as per the RFC on URLs (see here). They would have to be percent encoded to be standards compliant. My main point, though, is serving the unencoded characters for the sole purpose of having nice-looking URLs, so percent encoding is out. All major browsers seem to be parsing those URLs okay no matter what the RFC says. My general impression, though, is that it gets very shaky when leaving the domain of web browsers: URLs getting copy+pasted into text files, E-Mails, even Web sites with a different encoding HTTP Client libraries Exotic browsers, RSS readers Is my impression correct that trouble is to be expected here, and thus it's not a practical solution (yet) if you're serving a non-technical audience and it's important that all your links work properly even if quoted and passed on? Is there some magic way of serving nice-looking URLs in HTML http://www.example.com/düsseldorf?neighbourhood=Lörick that can be copy+pasted with the special characters intact, but work correctly when re-used in older clients?

• What is the best XPS WYSIWYG Editor that will output XAML?

My intentions is use the tool for a way to quickly generate and test the XAML (of XPS documents) with the intention of then generating the same xaml in code and programmatically generating an XPS document. Just as the line tool in Photoshop (for example): The user clicks on the image, drags the mouse (while the line between the start point and the mouse point is dynamically drawn on mouse drag). I would also need a callable function to send the page the start and end coordinates. I've found this very nice script for area selection: http://www.defusion.org.uk/code/javascript-image-cropper-ui-using-prototype-scriptaculous/ and I've found many script for drawing lines (and other shapes in JS), but could not find what I'm looking for. • Change the get parameters in the address bar in jquery

  when you search on yelp, by adding additional search parameters the page does not reload. I think the results are changed based on ajax, however when you click on one of the restaruants and go back to the previous page. All of the parameters are still there. I noticed the address bars change as the parameters change. I found http://www.asual.com/jquery/address/ but it seems to add # at the end of the url. Is there a way to make it simply like index.php?xyz=1 without refreshing the page

• How can i bundle other files when using cx_freeze?

  I'm using Python 2.6 and cx_Freeze 4.1.2 on a Windows system. I've created the setup.py to build my executable and everything works fine. When cx_Freeze runs it movies everything to the build directory. I have some other files that i would like included in my build directory. How can i do this? Here's my structure. src\ setup.py janitor.py README.txt CHNAGELOG.txt helpers\ uncompress\ unRAR.exe unzip.exe Here's my snippet: setup ( name='Janitor', version='1.0', description='Janitor', author='John Doe', author_email='[email protected]', url='http://www.this-page-intentionally-left-blank.org/', data_files = [ ('helpers\uncompress', ['helpers\uncompress\unzip.exe']), ('helpers\uncompress', ['helpers\uncompress\unRAR.exe']), ('', ['README.txt']) ], executables = [ Executable\ ( 'janitor.py', #initScript ) ] ) I can't seem to get this to work.   My wordpress*(a custom template)* nav is all working on all of the pages but now I found out that the Main nav doesn't show on this pages All pages e.g. search.php, single.php, index.php, page.php all has <?php get_header(); ?> I really don't know whats wrong. • Caching videos but of 0 Size

  Hi everyone, i have recently install cachevideos on linux with squid, its working but when it caches the video the video is just of 0 bytes in size, in the videocache.log file something like this appears 2011-02-08 19:46:37,235 INFO 192.168.1.5 - REQUEST - http://www.youtube.com/get_video?tmi=1&noflv=1&video_id=HfgZnBaHbt8&t=vjVQa1PpcFN0gQqMeI0xmahi0fFgDO5n59r4VrXgQmM=&el=detailpage&asv=3&fmt=34 2011-02-08 19:46:38,529 INFO 192.168.1.5 HfgZnBaHbt8 DOWNLOAD YOUTUBE 0 Video was downloaded and cached. on my localhost/videocache/youtube , i can see the file but its of 0 bytes and when i access the file from browser , in the videocache directory it tells me that video has been served from cache, but how come i can be assure that a 0 byte video is cached! Whats the problem please help me i am atlost!! the help at cachevideo.com is not working because their security captcha cant be displayed and thus i am unable to contact anywhere!! Please help me out!!

  I want to be able to send some extra headers with my UIWebView loadRequest method. I have tried: NSMutableURLRequest *req = [NSMutableURLRequest requestWithURL:[NSURL URLWithString:@"http://www.reliply.org/tools/requestheaders.php"]]; [req addValue:@"hello" forHTTPHeaderField:@"aHeader"]; [self.theWebView loadRequest:req]; I have also tried subclassing the UIWebView and intercepting the - (BOOL)webView:(UIWebView *)webView shouldStartLoadWithRequest:(NSURLRequest *)request navigationType:(UIWebViewNavigationType)navigationType method. In that method I had a block of code which looked like this: NSMutableURLRequest *newRequest = [request mutableCopy]; for(NSString *key in [customHeaders allKeys]) { [newRequest setValue:[customHeaders valueForKey:key] forHTTPHeaderField:key]; } [self loadRequest:newRequest]; But for some unknown reason it was causing the web view to not load anything (blank frame) and the error message NSURLErrorCancelled (-999) comes up (all known fixes don't fix it for me). So I am at a loss as to what to do. How can I send a custom header along with a UIWebView request? Many thanks!
