    What is the effective way to deploy an asp.net website in subfolder/subdomain? Actually I need to keep web.config in root directory and modify following things for this. Web.config Location tags Web.config authentication forms tag Web.sitemap Style.css Response.redirect/Server.transfer Image path Is there any way to avoid these changes? So my development work is not more different from production. Means I am expecting one place where applied changes are effective on whole site. No need to modify path on each page.

  • How to publish an ASP.NET MVC application to a free host

    Hi, I'm using a free web host (0000free) which supports ASP.NET MVC, but it uses Mono. This is the first time I deploy an MVC application, so I'm a little confused as to where I need to deploy it. I have Visual Studio 2010 and I used its Publish Feature (i.e. right click on the project name and click publish) and I tried several things: Publish method: FTP to the root folder. Publish method: FTP to the publich_html folder. Publish method: File System to the root folder. Publish method: File System to the publich_html folder. Publish method: File System to a local directory on my computer and then FTP to root and also tried the public_html folder. I went into the cPanel (control panel) to try and see if ASP.NET has to be added/enabled for my web site, but I didn't see anything there. I can't browse to Index.aspx nor can I redirect to it from index.html (as suggested from other posts on the host forum), right now I have a link from index.html to Index.aspx but it's not working either (see http://www.mydevarmy.com) I've also tried renaming Index.aspx to Default.aspx, but that doesn't work either.   • Upgrade from .NET 2.0 to .NET 3.5 problems

    I’m trying to upgrade our solution from VS2005 .NET 2.0 to VS2008 .NET 3.5. I converted the solution using VS2008 conversion wizard. All the projects (about 50) remained targeting to .NET Framework 2.0., moreover if I’m changing target framework manually for one of the projects, all referenced dll (i.e. System, System.Core, System.Data, etc. are still pointing to Framework 2.0. The only way to completely change targeting framework I found is to remove these references and refer them again using proper version of framework. Doing it manually is not best choice I think. 50 projects ~ 10 references each ~ 0.5 minutes for changing each reference is about 5 hours to complete. Am I missing something? Are there any other ways of converting full solution from .NET 2.0 to .NET 3.5? Thank you.

    I have a stubborn communications issue with an application running on the .NET Compact Framework 3.5 on Windows Mobile smartphones. I am constructing a web request using this code: UTF8Encoding encoding = new System.Text.UTF8Encoding(); byte[] Data = encoding.GetBytes(HttpUtility.ConstructQueryString(parameters)); httpRequest = WebRequest.Create((domain)) as HttpWebRequest; httpRequest.Timeout = 10000000; httpRequest.ReadWriteTimeout = 10000000; httpRequest.Credentials = CredentialCache.DefaultCredentials; httpRequest.Method = "POST"; httpRequest.ContentType = "application/x-www-form-urlencoded"; httpRequest.ContentLength = Data.Length; Stream SendReq = httpRequest.GetRequestStream(); SendReq.Write(Data, 0, Data.Length); SendReq.Close(); HttpWebResponse httpResponse = (HttpWebResponse)httpRequest.GetResponse(); return httpResponse.GetResponseStream(); The web service functions by receiving a JSON-encoded document as part of the URL (eg. https://site.com/ws/sync??document={"version":"1.0.0","items":[{"item_1":"item1"}]}&user=usr&password=pw), and as a response receives another JSON document as response data. This code runs fine on all emulators and PDAs running WM 5 and 6. We have seen an issue with a couple of customers running Treo smartphones (and only on the Sprint network). We have tested the code on an identical device on the AT&T network (via DeviceAnywhere) and once again the code worked as we expected. This has to be some sort of security policy on the phone, but we've been unable to determine a workaround or diagnose it thoroughly as we cannot reproduce it in house and have had to resort to getting users to assist with running test drivers for us. When this code executes, the user's device throws the following exception: System.Net.WebException Could not establish secure channel for SSL/TLS Stack trace: at System.Net.HttpWebRequest.finishGetRequestStream() at System.Net.HttpWebRequest.GetRequestStream() at OurApp.GetResponseStream(String domain, Hashtable parameters) inner exception: System.IO.IOException Authentication failed because the remote party has closed the transport stream. Stack trace: at System.Net.SslConnectionState.ClientSideHandshake() at System.Net.SslConnectionState.PerformClientHandShake() at System.Net.Connection.connect(Object ignored) at System.Threading.ThreadPool.WorkItem.doWork(Object o) at System.Threading.Timer.ring() Examining the server Apache logs shows no hits from the user's IP - I don't think the device is even attempting to send a packet before failing. If relevant, the server is running Apache on Linux and is written using the TurboGears Python framework. The server certificate is issued by a CA and is still valid. The test driver where this error was copied from was not code signed, however the same error (without the error messages) is signed with a GeoTrust certificate so we don't believe this is a code signing issue. The application installs and launches without issue on all phones - it's just establishing this SSL connection that is breaking for these users. One significant issue in troubleshooting is that there is a substantial inconvenience each time we try out a solution (need to find a "volunteer" customer), so we're really looking for a silver bullet or a better understanding of the handshaking process so we can be reasonably confident we only need to ask the user to test it one or two more times. One final mention: we have tried the sync both over ActiveSync and also over GPRS with identical results. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

  • Removing extended partition without deleting logical in it

    I'm running a Linux-based laptop, and in order to multi-boot several distros in it, I created an extended partition which contains a bunch of logical ones with GParted. Now, after quite a long time with this setup, I've changed my mind because of the consequent lack of storing space for my data partition. Now I want to keep one distro alone like it's normal, and eventually have some other operating systems stored in external supports to plug in and use if I want. Obviously, also this partition I want to keep (and to enlarge a little too) is just a logical inside the extended I want to keep. For what concerns the number I'm ok, meaning I currently have this big distro dedicated extended, the swap and the data partitions, so there's space for another primary before I delete the extended, but I don't know how to delete it without touching the logical in it, I don't want to reinstall the system losing all changes and settings, and I don't want to keep an extended partition for a logical alone. How can I do? Do I have to create a new primary, copy the logical content in it and then delete everything? Will the system boot and maintain exactly all the features it has now? Or is there a way to convert an extended into a primary once it contains just one logical? Or can I directly move a logical out of an extended turning it into a primary? Or, again, am I screwed?

  • Choosing an installer product that is free and will download/install the .NET Framework

    I'm currently using the Visual Studio Installer (Setup Project) in Visual Studio 2010 as the installer for MyProgram. It has some quirky bugs and is not very customizable so I would like to switch to another installer product. Here are my requirements: Must be free (and licensed for commercial use) Must install the Windows Installer 3.1 and .NET Framework 4.0 if the client doesn't have them The installer will download them if they are not available The code for detecting the .NET Framework and downloading it must be written by Microsoft (I do not want to have to update hard-coded URLs and registry keys in the future). I know that the Windows SDK includes a setup bootstrap that does this (C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v7.0A\Bootstrapper) In the future, when .NET Framework 5 is released and MyProgram uses it, no installer code will need to be changed, the updated installer product should see that MyProgram now uses the .NET Framework version 5 and will install that Here are my current choices: Visual Studio Installer: Automatically detects/downloads/installs Windows Installer and .NET Framework using a bootstrapper Setup.exe (Good!) Limited/buggy functionality (Uninstall shortcuts in the Start Menu cause empty folders to be left behind during uninstall, asking the user if they want a desktop shortcut requires a lot of work, etc.) NSIS: Doesn't natively support the .NET Framework so adding it as a prerequisite requires excessive coding, hardcoded URLS, etc. Inno Setup: Doesn't natively support the .NET Framework so adding it as a prerequisite requires excessive coding, hardcoded URLs, etc. WiX: Steep learning curve... not sure if I want to spend weeks learning it only to find out that it has the same uninstall problem as the Visual Studio Installer (because they both use MSI files) InstallShield LE 2010: Downloading it requires me to setup a fake email account to register just to download it. Then once it is installed it has to contact the company's servers and transmit some private information to them before I'm even allowed to try the free version. This is the most insidious form of DRM that there is and I will not accept it.

  • iphone: cross platform references and referencing external framework resources

    hi there working on an iphone app and separate framework. the separate framework is for an API that i'm building for use in multiple future apps. this api now needs to reference resources (images). what i would like to do is keep the resources WITH the API framework as local set of resources. i followed the instructions from http://www.clintharris.net/2009/iphone-app-shared-libraries/ to setup my app's project to use the headers from the separate API framework. what i can't seem to figure out is how to automatically load the framework's resources into the app's xcode environment so they can be linked in at app compile time. sure, i can drag the resources across from the framework into the main app's set of resources. but that seems kinda ugly and another step that possibly can be automated (??) anyone know of a better way? it would be great if any changes from the framework would be automatically available in the main app (due to the project 'link-age'). thanks for any help/tips/suggestions...

Para quem já usava o AJAX no ASP.NET 3.5, a idéia do Toolkit é igual, exceto a adição de novos controles. Com o AJAX vc pode mudar todo o comportamento da sua aplicação WEB, requisições no server passam a ser menos frequentes, o layout ajuda e muito com os controles do AJAX. Nativamente no VS 2010 já há o AJAX que a MS suporta nativamente (ScriptManager, UpdatePanel, UpdateProgress, etc), mas vale a pena implementar alguns controles do Toolkit. Bons estudos!

  • ASP.NET AJAX and my axe!

    So, I'm seriously considering axing ASP.NET AJAX from my future projects as I honestly feel it's too bloated, and at times convoluted. I'm also starting to feel it is a dying library in the .NET framework as I hardly see any quality components from the open-source community. All the kick-ass components are usually equally bloated commercial components... It was cool at first, but now I tend to get annoyed with it more than anything else. I'm planning on switching over to the jQuery library as just about everything in ASP.NET AJAX is often easily achievable with jQuery, and, more often than not, more graceful of a solution that ASP.NET AJAX and it has a much stronger open-source community. Perhaps, it's just me, but do you feel the same way about ASP.NET AJAX? How was/is your experience working with ASP.NET AJAX?

After that, a screen shot can be taken easily. I think there is no easier way to do this. Before .NET framework 2.0 it was quite difficult to use a web browser in C# or VB.NET because we either have to use COM+ interoperability or third party controls which becomes headache later. WebBrowser control in .NET framework 2.0 In .NET framework 2.0 we have a new Windows Forms WebBrowser control which is a wrapper around old shwdoc.dll. All you really need to do is to drop a WebBrowser control from your Toolbox on your form in .NET framework 2.0. If you have not used WebBrowser control yet, it's quite easy to use and very consistent with other Windows Forms controls. Some important methods of WebBrowser control are. public bool GoBack(); public bool GoForward(); public void GoHome(); public void GoSearch(); public void Navigate(Uri url); public void DrawToBitmap(Bitmap bitmap, Rectangle targetBounds); These methods are self explanatory with their names like Navigate function which redirects browser to provided URL. It also has a number of useful overloads. The DrawToBitmap (inherited from Control) draws the current image of WebBrowser to the provided bitmap. Using WebBrowser control in ASP.NET 2.0 The Solution Let's start to implement the solution which we discussed above. First we will define a static method to get the web site thumbnail image. public static Bitmap GetWebSiteThumbnail(string Url, int BrowserWidth, int BrowserHeight, int ThumbnailWidth, int ThumbnailHeight) { WebsiteThumbnailImage thumbnailGenerator = new WebsiteThumbnailImage(Url, BrowserWidth, BrowserHeight, ThumbnailWidth, ThumbnailHeight); return thumbnailGenerator.GenerateWebSiteThumbnailImage(); } The WebsiteThumbnailImage class will have a public method named GenerateWebSiteThumbnailImage which will generate the website thumbnail image in a separate STA thread and wait for the thread to exit. In this case, I decided to Join method of Thread class to block the initial calling thread until the bitmap is actually available, and then return the generated web site thumbnail. public Bitmap GenerateWebSiteThumbnailImage() { Thread m_thread = new Thread(new ThreadStart(_GenerateWebSiteThumbnailImage)); m_thread.SetApartmentState(ApartmentState.STA); m_thread.Start(); m_thread.Join(); return m_Bitmap; } The _GenerateWebSiteThumbnailImage will create a WebBrowser control object and navigate to the provided Url. We also register for the DocumentCompleted event of the web browser control to take screen shot of the web page. To pass the flow to the other controls we need to perform a method call to Application.DoEvents(); and wait for the completion of the navigation until the browser state changes to Complete in a loop. private void _GenerateWebSiteThumbnailImage() { WebBrowser m_WebBrowser = new WebBrowser(); m_WebBrowser.ScrollBarsEnabled = false; m_WebBrowser.Navigate(m_Url); m_WebBrowser.DocumentCompleted += new WebBrowserDocument CompletedEventHandler(WebBrowser_DocumentCompleted); while (m_WebBrowser.ReadyState != WebBrowserReadyState.Complete) Application.DoEvents(); m_WebBrowser.Dispose(); } The DocumentCompleted event will be fired when the navigation is completed and the browser is ready for screen shot. We will get screen shot using DrawToBitmap method as described previously which will return the bitmap of the web browser.   • Going back to ASP.Net Webforms from ASP.Net MVC. Recommend patterns/architectures?

    To many of you this will sound like a ridiculous question, but I am asking because I have little to no experience with ASP.Net Webforms - I went straight to ASP.Net MVC. I am now working on a project where we are limited to .Net 2.0 and Visual Studio 2005. I liked the clean separation of concerns when working with ASP.Net MVC, and am looking for something to make webforms less unbearable. Are there any recommended patterns or practices for people who prefer asp.net MVC, but are stuck on .net 2.0 and visual studio 2005?
