    I know the answer depends on the exact project and its requirements but i am asking on the avarage % of the total time goes into the tasks of the web application development statistically from your own experiance. While developing a web application (database driven) How much % of time does each of the following activities usually takes: -- database creation & all related stored procedures -- server side development -- client side development -- layout settings and designing I know there are lots of great web application developers around here and each one of you have done fair amount of web development and as a result there could be an almost fixed percentage of time going to each of the above activities of web developments for standard projects Update : I am not expecting someone to tell me number of hours i am asking about the average percentage of time that goes on each of the activities as per your experience i.e. server side dev 50%, client side development 20% ,,,,, I repeat there will be lots of cases that differs from the standard depending on the exact requirments of each web application project but here i am asking about Avarage for standard (no special requirment) web project

    I am new to game development but familiar with programming languages. I have started using Flixel and have a working Breakout game with score and lives. I am just stuck on how I can create a new screen/game over screen if a player runs out of lives.     My team is looking to automate installation/deployment of all of our development tools. The main driver for this is to ensure that everyone in the team has a consistent development environment setup and to also allow a new recruit to get up and running easily. By development environment I mean tools like SCM, toolchains, IDEs etc. and by consistent I mean everyone using the same version of compiler to build code (this is very important!). Here are a few of our requirements – Allow unattended (silent) install of our entire dev setup by running a single script Ability to deploy selective updates (new versions) for specific tools Ability to report which tools are installed and their specific version numbers Must work on Windows (Linux would be a bonus) Must be easy to maintain What are some of the tools that you've used to automate such a task?

  • Is unit testing or test-driven development worthwhile?

    My team at work is moving to Scrum and other teams are starting to do test-driven development using unit tests and user acceptance tests. I like the UATs, but I'm not sold on unit testing for test-driven development or test-driven development in general. It seems like writing tests is extra work, gives people a crutch when they write the real code, and might not be effective very often. I understand how unit tests work and how to write them, but can anyone make the case that it's really a good idea and worth the effort and time? Also, is there anything that makes TDD especially good for Scrum?

    Ok i saw many post's on how to serialize the value of dragged items to get hash and they tell how to save them.   • OBIEE 11.1.1 - User Interface (UI) Performance Is Slow With Internet Explorer 8

    The OBIEE 11g UI is performance is slow in IE 8 and faster in Firefox.  For VPN or WAN users, it takes long time to display links on Dashboards via IE 8. Cause is IE 8 generates many HTTP 304 return calls and this caused the 11g UI slower when compared to the Mozilla FireFox browser. To resolve this issue, you can implement HTTP compression and caching. This is a best practice.Why use Web Server Compression / Caching for OBIEE? Bandwidth Savings: Enabling HTTP compression can have a dramatic improvement on the latency of responses. By compressing static files and dynamic application responses, it will significantly reduce the remote (high latency) user response time. Improves request/response latency: Caching makes it possible to suppress the payload of the HTTP reply using the 304 status code.  Minimizing round trips over the Web to re-validate cached items can make a huge difference in browser page load times. This screen shot depicts the flow and where the compression and decompression occurs: Solution: a. How to Enable HTTP Caching / Compression in Oracle HTTP Server (OHS) 11.1.1.x 1. To implement HTTP compression / caching, install and configure Oracle HTTP Server (OHS) 11.1.1.x for the bi_serverN Managed Servers (refer to "OBIEE Enterprise Deployment Guide for Oracle Business Intelligence" document for details). 2. On the OHS machine, open the file HTTP Server configuration file (httpd.conf) for editing.   • Customizing Spaces UI

    In most common scenarios we stumble up on use cases to customize the Web center spaces UI. Is the Spaces UI customizable? What is the extent to which we can customize? How do i customize it? These are some questions that developers/architects normally come across. Well to clear the air, OOTB spaces comes with some default "site templates" and it also gives a flexibility to create custom site templates suiting the organization needs. The site templates concept has been introduced in the latest PS1 release of webcenter and to customize/create the the new site template, we have to leverage the Extend Spaces Project available on OTN. You could download the the project from here. Also there is white paper available on what all can be customized/extended from spaces perspective listed here . There is a specific details outlined on how to create custom site template in the Customizing Site Template white paper. One of the things the white paper high lights is "While you can create new site templates and modify the sample site templates but you cannot modify either of the out-of-the-box site templates ie the default and maximized. So if my need is to either increase the size of header to fit in a bigger logo or introduce couple of extra links on the default/maximized lay out how do i achieve this? All you need to do is customize the OOTB shell (shell-config.xml). 1. Copy the shell config's available in the Source Files Directory of the extended spaces unzipped directory into the CustomSite Template Project ExtendWebCenterSpaces\CustomSiteTemplate\custom\oracle\webcenter\webcenterapp\metadata\shell 2. Modify the appropriate shell 3. Deploy the CustomSite Template as ADF Jar 4. ensure you have the profile dependency on the aboproject int he custom webcenter spaces project 5. Deploy the Spaces Extension on the Webcenter Spaces Instance. (Details in the first white paper). You should see the changes immediately. eg: In the default shell, i have changed the height from 30 to 60 to increase the header size height="60" This is what i get to see : If you have worked on the R1 release time frame, where you created a custom shell/chrome, how do we make them compatible and make it available in the Spaces PS1 instance? All you need to do is the following: 1. Copy the custom shell in to the shell directory of the custom site template project 2. Register the shell with WCSiteTemplates.xml available in the same project. Eg : Yo can add the below entry pagePath="/oracle/webcenter/webcenterapp/view/templates/MyShellTemplate.jspx" pageDefPath="/oracle/webcenter/webcenterapp/bindings/pageDefs/oracle_webcenter_webcenterapp_view_templates_WebCenterAppShellTemplatePageDef.xml" displayName="myShell" chromeLevel="myShell"/ Note : pagePath - Absolute path of the template JSPX file. This path must be unique. So you might have to do the following to get your custom chrome working absolutely fine with no problems at all: 1. Create a jspx page, say /custom/mysite/SiteTemplate.jspx 2. Include the the default jspx in the new site template like following SiteTemplate.jspx ------------------ 3. Add the newly created site template in the WCSiteTemplate.xml file like following - pagePath="/custom/mysite/SiteTemplate.jspx" pageDefPath="/oracle/webcenter/webcenterapp/bindings/pageDefs/oracle_webcenter_webcenterapp_view_templates_WebCenterAppShellTemplatePageDef.xml" displayName="myShell" chromeLevel="myShell"/

  • Getting a job in the games industry as a developer, just knowing a game engine

    I recently enrolled in a community college for games developement. But I am skeptical about the curriculum. I have no experience in the gaming industry so I wouldn't be able to tell whether it's a good investment or not. So I am asking you. I don't want to get too much into the details of all the classes I am taking so I will try to be brief. By the time I graduate, I should have a understanding of how a game engine works. I will be working with the Unreal Engine to develop a Multiplayer game from scratch. So in the process of my final project, I will learn how to work within the Unreal Engine, learn Python and learn how to use its API to connect to a remote server and build game mechanics. Overall I will also recieve an associates degree in game development. I learn C++ but not C. The director said he was trying to implement C in the program as well. What I notice is I will not learn how to build a 3D game engine from scratch. They do not teach any artificial intelligence (AI). I will not learn how to work with the graphics card using a graphics API such as DirectX or OpenGL. I know building a game engine from scratch is a little complex, but at the same time the track is requiring me to take some advanced mathematics courses such as calculus and geometry 1 and 2. I also got to take a physics class. I just think that's a little much for just learning how to use the Unreal Engine but not actually build one or try to learn the anatomy of a games engine. Is this good enough to possibly land my a job in the industry? If I left anything out or was not detail, please feel free to ask more questions. Edit: I do learn data structures and algorithms.

    I started the source from this progressbar example, and it works fine.   • What needs to be considered when setting up for Linux Development? [closed]

    I want to set up a box for Linux development. I have a working linux install with the usual toolchain and an IDE. I'm looking for advice on how to approach structuring accounts and folders for development. As the Perl folks say "There's always more than one way to do it." Left to my own devices, I'll come up with several unproductive ways of doing it before figuring out what an experienced Linux programmer would think obvious. I'm not looking for instructions to follow for a specific set of tools or a specific software package. Instead, I'm looking for insight into what decisions need to be made and how to make them, with understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of each individual choice. These are some of the questions that come up: Where to put sources Where to put built object files and libraries where to install what to set in environment variables what compiler flags matter and how do you manage them across several types of builds what configuration entries to make in an IDE how to manage libraries to support multiple environments how to handle different build versions such as debug vs release, or cross platform builds If you are an experienced Linux developer, the answers to these questions may seem trivial and obvious. I'd like to learn to make decisions about these questions that result in as little manual configuration as possible, given some existing sources, a particular IDE, or no IDE at all, a paticular set of development libraries etc. At this point you're probably thinking: Can you be more specific? Sure. But remember that I'm trying to learn how to think about this stuff, not just follow a recipie for a specific set of results.
