how does this work?
in irb:
>> class A
>> b = [1, 2,3]
>> end
=> [1, 2, 3]
Is b an instance variable? class variable? how would I access b from
outside the class? Is it used for meta-programming?
Hello everyone,
I'm using the rails-settings gem, and I'm trying to understand how you add functions to ActiveRecord classes (I'm building my own library for card games), and I noticed that this gem uses one of the Meta-programming techniques to add the function to the ActiveRecord::Base class (I'm far from Meta-programming master in ruby, but I'm trying to learn it)
module RailsSettings
class Railtie < Rails::Railtie
initializer 'rails_settings.initialize', :after => :after_initialize do
Railtie.extend_active_record
end
end
class Railtie
def self.extend_active_record
ActiveRecord::Base.class_eval do
def self.has_settings
class_eval do
def settings
RailsSettings::ScopedSettings.for_thing(self)
end
scope :with_settings, :joins => "JOIN settings ON (settings.thing_id = #{self.table_name}.#{self.primary_key} AND
settings.thing_type = '#{self.base_class.name}')",
:select => "DISTINCT #{self.table_name}.*"
scope :with_settings_for, lambda { |var| { :joins => "JOIN settings ON (settings.thing_id = #{self.table_name}.#{self.primary_key} AND
settings.thing_type = '#{self.base_class.name}') AND
settings.var = '#{var}'" } }
scope :without_settings, :joins => "LEFT JOIN settings ON (settings.thing_id = #{self.table_name}.#{self.primary_key} AND
settings.thing_type = '#{self.base_class.name}')",
:conditions => 'settings.id IS NULL'
scope :without_settings_for, lambda { |var| { :joins => "LEFT JOIN settings ON (settings.thing_id = #{self.table_name}.#{self.primary_key} AND
settings.thing_type = '#{self.base_class.name}') AND
settings.var = '#{var}'",
:conditions => 'settings.id IS NULL' } }
end
end
end
end
end
end
What I don't understand is why he uses class_eval on ActiveRecord::Base, wasn't it easier if he just open the ActiveRecord::Base class and define the functions? Specially that there's nothing dynamic in the block (What I mean by dynamic is when you do class_eval or instance_eval on a string containing variables)
something like this:
module ActiveRecord
class Base
def self.has_settings
class_eval do
def settings
RailsSettings::ScopedSettings.for_thing(self)
end
scope :with_settings, :joins => "JOIN settings ON (settings.thing_id = #{self.table_name}.#{self.primary_key} AND
settings.thing_type = '#{self.base_class.name}')",
:select => "DISTINCT #{self.table_name}.*"
scope :with_settings_for, lambda { |var| { :joins => "JOIN settings ON (settings.thing_id = #{self.table_name}.#{self.primary_key} AND
settings.thing_type = '#{self.base_class.name}') AND
settings.var = '#{var}'" } }
scope :without_settings, :joins => "LEFT JOIN settings ON (settings.thing_id = #{self.table_name}.#{self.primary_key} AND
settings.thing_type = '#{self.base_class.name}')",
:conditions => 'settings.id IS NULL'
scope :without_settings_for, lambda { |var| { :joins => "LEFT JOIN settings ON (settings.thing_id = #{self.table_name}.#{self.primary_key} AND
settings.thing_type = '#{self.base_class.name}') AND
settings.var = '#{var}'",
:conditions => 'settings.id IS NULL' } }
end
end
end
end
I understand the second class_eval (before the def settings) is to define functions on the fly on every class that 'has_settings' right ? Same question here, I think he could use "def self.settings" instead of "class_eval.... def settings", no ?
I would like to clip an image with path. In the book Programming with Quartz there is an example on how to draw a circle clipped by a rectangular path (p.37), and there is also a chapter on image masking with existing image as stencil (Ch.10). But I'm still not sure about how to clip an existing image using path. Is there any example or pointer?
Found myself quite confused today about this.
I create a blank repository locally(hg init), cloned it to working copy, added some code, commited and pushed it(to local repo obviously).
Now I need to share that repository with others. There is a server that has mercurial on it, how do I clone my repository to a remote one such that other developers can access it and pull/push code from/to it?
Is there any way to know if an object is a const object or regular object, for instance consider the following class
class String
{
String(const char* str);
};
if user create a const object from String then there is no reason to copy the passed native string and that because he will not make any manipulation on it, the only thing he will do is get string size, string search and other functions that will not change the string.
hello!
I'm new for facebook developer. I want to add comments box to my application and I follow the tutorial in facebook wiki. It's not work in my application.
My Canvas Callback URL is http://122.155.0.71/~facebook/ and I upload xd_receiver.htm to root directory.
and I paste the code
FB.init("b6e07896a1d0889d9784dea150802587",
"/xd_receiver.htm");
to my application. It not show up. When I view this page with firebug. I see .
I don't know about xid, where can I create it.
Can you help me about this problem?
thank you...
I am running the following SQL against an MDB file, a copy of which is located here: http://hotfile.com/dl/40641614/2353dfc/test.mdb.html (perfectly clean file, no macros or viruses)
SELECT datediff("d", MAX(invoice.date), Now) As Date_Diff
, MAX(invoice.date) AS max_invoice_date
, customer.number AS customer_number
FROM invoice
INNER JOIN customer
ON invoice.customer_number = customer.number
GROUP BY customer.number
If the the following was added:
HAVING datediff("d", MAX(invoice.date), Now) > 365
would this simply exclude rows with Date_Diff <= 365?
What should be the effect of the HAVING clause here?
I want to create a 2d array that represents my 2d canvas. For each pixel, I will look up the value and then save an integer {0, 1, 2, 3, 4} as each element of the array. Unfortunately, this takes way too friggin' long to run each time I load the game.
How can I write a script that creates this array for me and outputs the array code so I can just paste it in a js file and have it preloaded? (I'm prototyping a game, so I just need to run this for my test map or two.)
Hello everybody!
I've been wondering whether is possible or not to pass a function as parameter in PHP; I want something like when you're programming in JS:
object.exampleMethod(function(){
// some stuff to execute
});
What I want is to execute that function somewhere in exampleMethod. Is that possible in PHP?
Thank you so much.
We are programming a new web application framework (Second WAF). I was wondering if we should support cookieless sessions or not.
Who use it and who needs it?
I am trying to read in a series of tab delimited text files into existing MySQL tables. The code I have is quite simple:
$lines = file("import/file_to_import.txt");
foreach ($lines as $line_num => $line) {
if($line_num > 1) {
$arr = explode("\t", $line);
$sql = sprintf("INSERT INTO my_table VALUES('%s', '%s', '%s', %s, %s);", trim((string)$arr[0]), trim((string)$arr[1]), trim((string)$arr[2]), trim((string)$arr[3]), trim((string)$arr[4]));
mysql_query($sql, $database) or die(mysql_error());
}
}
But no matter what I do (hence the casting before each variable in the sprintf statement) I get the "You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near '' at line 1" error.
I echo out the code, paste it into a MySQL editor and it runs fine, it just won't execute from the PHP script.
What am I doing wrong??

hello I'm new to PHP programming and I migrated from ASP .net to PHP..
I have a div just like below
<div id="mydiv"></div>
what I wanted to do is just to change the text and html content(like some name or any data in it) in it.
What I imagine is just like
mydiv=innertext="some value";

I've implemented the Symfony2 Dependency Injection container in my Zend Framework project and it works fine in the MVC layer of my application. I've initialized the DIC in my bootstrap and can access it anywhere by calling:
Zend_Controller_Front::getInstance()->getParam('bootstrap')->getDic()
The problem is that there are some parts of my application that do not utilize the Zend Framework application/MVC layer. My CLI tools for example. I could perfectly initialize a new DIC there but that would just be some copypaste work from the Bootstrap file which is asking for trouble down the road (DRY principles, etc)
Is it a better solution to make my DIC available in the Zend_Registry or as a singleton called by a static method DIC::getInstance() for example?
I know Registry and singletons are considered bad things but the DIC is such a high level part of the application that I will probably never run into the problems that make it a bad thing.
Is this a good solution or are there better ways of accomplishing a globally accessible DIC?
Does anyone else think that the add view dialog in VS is useless or is it just me?
Why is there no search/filtering in there? I can not even paste the type name (without namespace) there to speed up the view creation.
Plus, there are a lot of irrelevant classes there, including classes from all referenced libraries.
Am I missing something or Microsoft never did any usability testing with that??
Is it possible to filter out types/assemblies in the dialog and/or better navigation compared to manually scrolling the combobox with all the types listed? Is it possible to include only types from a particular directory/assembly/namespace? (the ViewModels namespace for example)
EDIT: As it seems from the answers that there is no usable workaround for this, I have filed a suggestion at Connect: https://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/feedback/ViewFeedback.aspx?FeedbackID=507784
Please vote for the suggestion if you find this is an important issue.
I'm trying to deal with: "Requests made from Javascript running on your web pages must be proxied to avoid same-origin policy conflicts."
I know how to work with the JSON once I've got it. But aside from copy-pasting the JSON results via my browser, I don't know how to localize it for use.
Hi, I am learning the Opengl graphic programming at Eclipse. Can someone tell me the difference between GLUT application and SDL application, so that I can dig into either one of them? Tks.
I have a copy of the contents of an svn branch locally without any .svn folders. The equivalent of the output of an svn export of that branch. I'd like to link up this directory to its corresponding branch in version control, without having to do an svn checkout followed by manually merging my changes in. Is there some way to do this easily?
We have an async socket server written in C#. (running on Windows Web Server 2008)
It works flawlessly up until it stop accepting new connections for an unknown reason.
We have about 200 concurrent connections on average, however we keep a count of both connections created and connections dropped. These figures can reach as high as 10,000 or as low as only 1000 before it just stops! It can run for up to around 8 hours sometimes before it stops or it can run for about half hour, at the moment it's running for about an hour before we have another application bring it back up automatically when that can't connect (not exactly ideal).
It doesn't appear like we're running out of sockets as we're closing them properly, we're also logging all errors and nothing is happening immediately before it stops.
We can figure this out. Does anyone have any ideas what might be going on?
I can paste code, but it generally just the same old async beginaccept/send code you see everywhere.
I have a class which has a list of child items. Is there a design pattern I can copy that I can apply to these classes so that I can access the parent instance from the child, and it enforces rules such as not being able to add the child to multiple parents, etc?
A friend of mine, who studies game development at an university, is currently learning programming in OpenCL. What would be a simple project that teaches the most important aspects of OpenCL and can be finished within about 50 - 100 hours?
For those of you who are into programming not just for the money. I would like to know which benefits you would like to have (or already have).
OK, maybe taking away the money factor will limit this question too much. I am surprised to see that most companies have a fixed set for their benefits package. Were you able to negotiate something new or just your salary? What things have you seen out there and/or value most?
There was this old sql server tool called Lectoneth or something like that, you'd put sql queries in it, and it would rewrite it for you.
I think quest bought them out, but I can't find where to download a free copy of that software.
Really helps when you have no dba, and have lots of sql queries to rewrite.
Thanks
Craig
Hi,
I've just installed a fresh copy of SQL 2008 Express. before I did anything I opened Management Studio and successfully connected using Window Authentication.
However I tried to run the following on the command line
"telnet localhost 1433" and got the error "Could not open connection to the host, on port 1433: Connect failed"
I checked netstat and there is nothing listening on port 1433.
Before I go any further, is there a problem with the install?
thanks,
Shane

hello,
I have created a custom page which sits at site.com/user/me/soe
now im trying to theme this page and have created a subsequent template file.
however if i copy in any basic html into my template file, all it does is produce a white page with my text and abandons the sites structure i originally had.
i was hoping somebody could help me understand preprocessing as i feel that is the way to solve this.
