Connecting to SQL Server with Visual Studio Express Editions

I find it odd that in Visual C# 2008 Express edition, when you use the database explorer, your options are: 1) Microsoft Access 2) SQL Server Compact 3.5, and 3) SQL Server Database File. BUT if you use Visual Web Developer 2008 Express, you can connect to a regular SQL Server, Oracle, ODBC, etc. For people developing command-line or other C# apps that need to talk to a SQL Server database, do you really need to build your LINQ/Data Access code with one IDE (Visual Web Developer) and your program in another (Visual C#)? It's not a hard workaround, but it seems weird. If Microsoft wanted to force you to upgrade to Visual Studio to connect to SQL Server, why would they include that feature in one of their free IDEs but not the other? I feel like I might be missing something (like how to do it all in Visual C#). Thanks! Tom

In Django, how to create tables from an SQL file when syncdb is run

Hi, How do I make syncdb execute SQL queries (for table creation) defined by me, rather then generating tables automatically. I'm looking for this solution as some particular models in my app represent SQL-table-views for a legacy-database table. So, I've created their SQL-views in my django-DB like this: CREATE VIEW legacy_series AS SELECT * FROM legacy.series; I have a reverse engineered model that represents the above view/legacytable. But whenever I run syncdb, I have to create all the views first by running sql scripts, otherwise syncdb simply creates tables for them (if a view is not found). How do I make syncdb run the above mentioned SQL?

Sequence Generators in T-SQL

We have an Oracle application that uses a standard pattern to populate surrogate keys. We have a series of extrinsic rows (that have specific values for the surrogate keys) and other rows that have intrinsic values. We use the following Oracle trigger snippet to determine what to do with the Surrogate key on insert: 'IF :NEW.SurrogateKey IS NULL THEN SELECT SurrogateKey_SEQ.NEXTVAL INTO :NEW.SurrogateKey FROM DUAL; END IF;' If the supplied surrogate key is null then get a value from the nominated sequence, else pass the supplied surrogate key through to the row. I can't seem to find an easy way to do this is T-SQL. There are all sorts of approaches, but none of which use the notion of a sequence generator like Oracle and other SQL-92 compliant DBs do. Anybody know of a really efficient way to do this in SQL Server T-SQL? BTW we're using SQL Server 2008 if that's any help. TIA, Paolo

Perl DBI - run SQL Script with multiple statements

I have a sql file test.sql used to run some SQL (create object / update / delete / insert) that can look like this CREATE TABLE test_dbi1 ( test_dbi_intr_no NUMBER(15) , test_dbi_name VARCHAR2(100); UPDATE mytable SET col1=1; CREATE TABLE test_dbi2 ( test_dbi_intr_no NUMBER(15) , test_dbi_name VARCHAR2(100); Usually, i would just use SQLPLUS (from within Perl) to execute this test.sql using this command : @test.sql Is there a way to do the same thing, using DBI in Perl ? So far, i found DBI can only execute one statement at a time, and without the ";" at the end.

Php/ODBC encoding problem

I use ODBC to connect to SQL Server from PHP. In PHP I read some string (nvarchar column) data from SQL Server and then want to insert it to mysql database. When I try to insert such value to mysql database table I get this mysql error: Incorrect string value: '\xB3\xB9ow...' for column 'name' at row 1 For string with all ASCII characters everything is fine, the problem occurs when non-ASCII characters (from some European languages) exist. So, in more general terms: there is a Unicode string in MS SQL Server database, which is retrieved by PHP trough ODBC. Then it is put in sql insert query (as value for utf-8 varchar column) which is executed for mysql database. Can someone explain to me what is happening in this situation in terms of encoding? At which step what character encoding convertions may take place? I use: PHP 5.2.5, MySQL5.0.45-community-nt, MS Sql Server 2005.

Convert date from access to SQL Server with SSIS

Hi, I want to convert a database from access to SQL Server using SSIS. I cannot convert the date/time columns of the access db. SSIS says something like: conversion between DT_Date and DT_DBTIMESTAMP is not supported. (Its translated from my German version, might be different in English version). In Access I have Date/Time column, in SQL Server I have datetime. In the dataflow chart of the SSIS I have a OLE DB source for the access db, an sql server target and a data conversion. In the data conversion I convert the columns to date[DT_DATE]. They are connected like this: AccessDB -> conversion -> SQL DB What am I doing wrong? How can I convert the Access date columns to SQL Server date columns?

Logging NHibernate SQL queries

Is there a way to access the full SQL query, including the values, inside my code? I am able to log SQL queries using log4net: <logger name="NHibernate.SQL" additivity="false"> <level value="ALL"/> <appender-ref ref="NHibernateSQLFileLog"/> </logger> However, I would like to find a way to log SQL queries from the code also. This way I will log the specific SQL query that causes an exception in my try/catch statement. Right now I have to data-mine the SQLFileLog to find the query that caused the exception when an exception occurs and it is not efficient.

Setting Up TFS Server outside of a domain

Hi Im trying to set up TFS 2010 on a machine that is connected to a network, but not on the domain. I am trying to connect this to a SQL Server that is also connected to the network and also not on the domain. When I run through the TFS configuration Wizard and try to connect to the SQL Server, it fails with a message "A connection can not be made...." which looks like it cant see the Server. However when i connect through SQL Management Studio it works when i use SQL Authentication (not Windows Auth). I beleive its failing because TFS needs to connect using Windows Authetication (please correct me if im wrong). I can not add the Windows Authentication for my TFS machine onto the SQL machine becuase they are on different domains (again, pleas correct me if I'm wrong). Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.

Is file_get_contents multi line?

Hello all, Does file_get_contents maintain line breaks? I thought it did but I have tried this: if($conn){ $tsql = file_get_contents('scripts/CreateTables/SLR05_MATCH_CREATETABLES.sql'); $row = sqlsrv_query($conn, $tsql); print_r(sqlsrv_errors()); } The errors I get is that SQL Server complains that there is incorrect syntax. I get the same errors when I run the SQL Script without any line breaks, which suggests file_get_contents removes them? When I run the script normally (open the file in SQL Server Management Studio) and execute it, it works perfectly. So is there something that I can use that maintains line breaks etc? Or is there another problem here in using queries from a file with the SQL Server PHP Driver from Microsoft? Thanks all for any help

Even lighter than SQLite

I've been looking for a C++ SQL library implementation that is simple to hook in like SQLite, but faster and smaller. My projects are in games development and there's definitely a cutoff point between needing to pass the ACID test and wanting some extreme performance. I'm willing to move away from SQL string style queries, allowing it to be code driven, but I haven't found anything out there that provides SQL like flexibility while also preferring performance over the ACID test. I don't want to go reinventing the wheel, and the idea of implementing an SQL library on my own is quite daunting, even if it's only going to be simple subset of all the calls you could make. I need the basic commands (SELECT, MODIFY, DELETE, INSERT, with JOIN, and WHERE), not data operations (like sorting, min, max, count) and don't need the database to be atomic, or even enforce consistency (I can use a real SQL service while I'm testing and debugging).

After spending a few days in Mandalay Bay's THEHotel, I guess I now call everything THE... Seriously, they even tag their toilet paper with THEtp... I guess the brand builders in Vegas thought that once you are on to something you keep on doing it, and granted it is a nice hotel with nice rooms. THEanalytics Most of my collab10 experience was in a room called Reef C, where the BIWA bootcamp was held. Two solid days of BI, Warehousing and Analytics organized by the BIWA SIG at IOUG. Didn't get to see all sessions, but what struck me was the high interest in Analytics. Marty Gubar's OLAP session was full and he did some very nice things with the OLAP option. The cool bit was that he actually gets all the advanced calculations in OLAP to show up in OBI EE without any effort. It was nice to see that the idea from OWB where you generate an RPD is now also in AWM. I think it makes life so much simpler to generate these RPD's from your data model. Even if the end RPD needs some tweaking, it is all a lot less effort to get something going. You can see this stuff for yourself in this demo (click here). OBI EE uses just SQL to get to the calculations, and so, if you prefer APEX, you can build you application there and get the same nice calculations in an APEX application. Marty also showed the Simba MDX driver used with Excel. I guess we should call that THEcoolone... and it is very slick and wonderfully useful for all of you who actually know Excel. The nice thing is that you leverage pure Excel for all operations (no plug-ins). That means no new tools to learn, no new controls, all just pure Excel. THEdatabasemachine Got some very good questions in my "what makes Exadata fast" session and overall, the interest in Exadata is overwhelming. One of the things that I did try to do in my session is to get people to think in new patterns rather than in patterns based on Oracle 9i running on some random hardware configuration. We talked a little bit about the often over-indexing and how everyone has to unlearn all of that on Exadata. The main thing however is that everyone needs to get used to the shear size of some of the components in a Database machine V2. 5TB of flash cache is a lot of very fast data storage, half a TB of memory gets quite interesting as well. So what I did there was really focus on some of the content in these earlier posts on Upward ILM and In-Memory processing. In short, I do believe the these newer media point out a trend. In-memory and other fast media will get cheaper and will see more use. Some of that we do automatically by adding new functionality, but in some cases I think the end user of the system needs to start thinking about how to leverage all this new hardware. I think most people got very excited about these new capabilities and opportunities. THEcoolkids One of the cool things about the BIWA track was the hand-on track. Very cool to see big crowds for both OLAP and OWB hands-on. Also quite nice to see that the folks at RittmanMead spent so much time on preparing for that session. While all of them put down cool stuff, none was more cool that seeing Data Mining on an Apple iPAD... it all just looks great on an iPAD! Very disappointing to see that Mark Rittman still wasn't showing OWB on his iPAD ;-) THEend All in all this was a great set of sessions in the BIWA track. Lots of value to our guests (we hope) and we hope they all come again next year!

Update Panel error: Control with the ID "xxx" could not be found in the UpdatePanel

I have a composite drop down calendar user control that consists of a textbox and and calendar image and a validation control. I expose a property called "TextBox" on the usercontrol which returns a reference to the textbox used within the control. This is the textbox that the user enters the date into. In the ASPX page, I have an instance of this usercontrol: <uc1:DropDownCalendar ID="dtmDateFirstEntry" runat="server" Required="True" /> In my code behind, I want to detect when a user has tabbed off of the textbox and, using an UpdatePanel, referesh an appropriate message depending on the date that was specified. I didn't think that the trigger control had to be within the UpdatePanel. I thought that was the whole point of adding the trigger. How do I refresh this update panel changes to the text in the date usercontrol. Next I will have to add other triggers to trigger the refreshing of the Update Panel from other controls scattered across the page, so clearly all of the trigger sources cannot be within the UpdatePanel.

Adding ComboBoxItem to a combobox inside a user control (XAML/WPF)

I am currently learning to create custom controls in WPF. I successfully created a simple custom control using a Label and a Text Box. I was able to allow setting the Label text by DependencyProperty. Now I am creating a user control that has a ComboBox. I need to allow adding items to this ComboBox from outside the control. To achieve this, I tried exposing a DependencyProperty of type ItemsCollection and it will allows access to the ComboBox's Items property (the DP in my control sample is named 'CbItems'). But I get errors because Items property of Combobox is ReadOnly. Swiping Images with Page Control in Iphone

I am trying to make practice app where i can scroll images with page control. I am able to scroll images and able to include the page control. But the problem i face is i am not able to interlink the two. Meaning to say when I scroll the images, the page control is not affected and when i change the page control, the scrolling of the images is unaffected. Does there exist an "idea checkout system" on the Internet?

Greetings. I would like to ask the following question: is there anything on the Internet like an "idea checkout" system? Situation: I'm a software developer. Since my current job has started 2 years ago, my mentor at that time has pointed me to the open source world. I have only put little time to look at some of the open source projects, let alone any contribution. However, it is my wish to start developing something outside of the work. Well, except a little problem. I don't know what to develop! It is not about the technical knowledge; the problem is that, I am not a creative person. I am very good at analytical thinking, as well as debugging skills. When being told by my work partners to develop a solution, I could get it done without a problem. However, outside of work, I have no idea what to develop. When I look at the Internet, it seems that so many people have already been developing on so many interesting stuff, making me wonder what I could develop, so that I would not reinvent something already existed. That starts to make me wonder. On the Internet, is there anything like an "idea checkout" system or society? For example, some people would throw in as a software idea, and the system would keep it as an "inventory"; later, a potential software developer would "check out" the idea, just a how people would check out a book from the library. Then, the developer would check the "idea" back in, with a certain kind of work-in-progress or developed software, thus becoming an open-source project. I have just noticed that here at stackoverflow, there is a "Project-Ideas" tag, so perhaps that can provide me some ideas on what to develop; still, my wonder is about a system that people would provide ideas, and people would check out ideas to develop / implement into actual solution. Is there such a system or society existing anywhere on the Internet? Any input is welcome! Thank you very much. Update: Thank you for everyone who has answered my question. Certainly, "getting idea" is part of my problem; as a software developer, however, I'm concerned more than just "getting idea". What I am concerned more, as I have commented, is about the existence of such an idea exchanging ecosystem, capable to initiate open-source projects. I'll put an example here. Say, person A has an idea of music search program, but not search by the attributes of the music (composer, singer, publisher, lyrics, etc.); instead, he wants a program (and a database) to search a piece of music by melody. Very often, people only remember a piece of music by its melody, not even the name of the music (e.g. the music he wants was only once heard in a bookstore, but the melody just gets stuck in his head!). In order to find that piece, normally he would just need to blindly search for it, and spent a long time to do so. A search by melody would enable person A to find the piece much quicker. However, he would not want to personally work on it, not just because of the complexity (he is not a musician and/or programmer, knowing almost nothing about music systems in computer, search algorithms, etc.), but also legal issues (RIAA??), thus he would just like to keep the idea at some place, and let other people to work on that. Now, a developer (person B) may be at the same stage as I am right now, wishing to find something to develop, but not having an idea. With the idea exchanging ecosystem, person B will search, and somehow discover person A's music search idea, and feeling interested enough to work on it. So he "checks out" the idea, start working on it (at least a skeleton), and checks back in with the progress. An open-source project starts from here, fulfilling person A's wish, and person B's programming desire. The above is just an example, because there are already such systems exist on the Internet, but it illustrates what I think about the idea exchange system in my mind. My main concern is about idea exchanging ecosystem, not at personal and unorganized level, but at a semi-organized protocol that's specifically for software developers, having actual projects coming out as the fruits. Not about "projects", but about "ideas and product of ideas". Hopefully that would clear up some of the original idea of this question. If you have a lot of new items into GP and have just one Site ID setup, the best approach to assigning your items to a particular site is by going to the Site Maintenance Window which is located in Cards>>Inventory>>Site. Once you are in the window below, you can click the Assign button to assign Items to the Site selected. However, if you have you a lot of Sites and Items created, this can be quite a cumbersome and time consuming process. Giving event control back to xaml/callee to access check/uncheck

Hi All, I've scoured the Internet but my search-foo must not work if it's out there cause I just can't find the proper search terms to get me the answer I am looking for. So I turn to the experts here as a last resort to point me in the right direction. What I'm trying to do is create a composite control of a text box and a list box but I want to allow the control consumer to decide what to do when say the checkbox is checked/unchecked and I just can't figure it out... Maybe i'm going about it all wrong. What I've done thus far is to: create a custom control that extends ListBox expose a custom DP named "Text" (for the Text box but it's not the important part) craft the generic.xaml so that the list items have a default ItemTemplate/DataTemplate inside the DataTemplate I'm trying to set the "Checked" or "Unchecked" events expose 'wrapper' events as DPs in the custom control that would get 'set' via the template when instatiated As soon as I try something like the following (inside generic.xaml): <DataTemplate> <...> <CheckBox Checked="{TemplateBinding MyCheckedDP}"/> <...> </DataTemplate> I get runtime exceptions, the designer - vs2010 - pukes out a LONG list of errors that are all very similar and nothing I do can make it work. I went so far as to try using the VisualTreeHelper but no magic combination I could find would work nor would it allow me to traverse the tree because when the OnApplyTemplate method fires the listbox items don't exist yet and aren't in the tree. So hopefully this all makes sense but if not please let me know and I'll edit the post for clarifications. Thanks to all for any pointers or thoughts... Android spinner inside a custom control - OnItemSelectedListener does not trigger

I am writing a custom control that extends LinearLayout. Inside that control I am using a spinner to let the user select an item from a list. The problem I have is that the OnItemSelectedListener event does not fire. When moving the same code to an Activity/Fragment all is working just fine. I have followed some answers that was given to others asking about the same issue, and nothing helped. still the event does not fire. This is my code after I followed the answers that suggested to put the spinner inside my layout XML instead of by code. User Control as container at design time

I'm designing a simple expander control. I've derived from UserControl, drawn inner controls, built, run; all ok. Since an inner Control is a Panel, I'd like to use it as container at design time. Indeed I've used the attributes: [Designer(typeof(ExpanderControlDesigner))] [Designer("System.Windows.Forms.Design.ParentControlDesigner, System.Design", typeof(IDesigner))] Great I say. But it isn't... The result is that I can use it as container at design time but: The added controls go back the inner controls already embedded in the user control Even if I push to top a control added at design time, at runtime it is back again on controls embedded to the user control I cannot restrict the container area at design time into a Panel area What am I missing?
