• Bug: unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at

  I have recently installed new system on my disc, Ubuntu 12.04. Installation proceeded without problems, I started installing additional software and put data from other discs. I had already two times bug report, it was quite long, and I have no idea how to acces to log file (which probably is somewhere saved) and since I had to switch off the computer using the button, anything else was possible, here is just a small part of it (what I've noted on paper) could not write bytes: Broken pipe speach dicpatcher disabled: edit etc/default/speach-dispatcher saned disabled: edit .... and than: BUG: unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at 0000009c I've run Memory test in GRUB, everything is fine. First time it occured when I was using rsync, second time when I was trying to install texlive. Should I install whole system once again? Or can it be hardware problem? Or something else? If there is any hardware details which may be relevant, please ask, since I have no idea what is happening, I don't know what kind of information could be useful. Thanks P.S. dmesg output:

• ldap samba user access issue

  I have a samba share that is on the LAN. It is auth'd via ldap. Users access file system via ad windows shares. There are shortcuts in directories that point to dir's on samba. Typically a user will click the shortcut to the smb dir, and will be met with a permission denied error. Upon closing explorer and reopening, it will work. DNS is handled by the domain controller, and that is the only server any of the machines use for DNS. Nothing in eventvwr. Only see successful auth entries in samba log. Any ideas?

• Keyboard and mouse/touchpad wont work in 11.10

  I installed Ubuntu 11.10 onto my Fujitsu Lifebook N5010 Laptop yesterday and all seemed good up until this morning. My key board and mouse/touchpad no longer work. I can, however, plug in a usb mouse and that works so I am able to shut the laptop off. With the usb mouse plugged in I still can't use the keyboard so the only thing the mouse is good for is shutting the system down. When I first boot the system the mouse/touchpad and keyboard will work long enough so that I can log in my password but then after about 20 seconds or so the mouse/touchpad and keyboard stop working. I have searched the internet for answers and haven't found anything that is working for me. Someone suggested I type a particular command into the terminal but not real sure how I do that without a keyboard. And going out to buy a usb keyboard (assuming that would work) and usb mouse still doesn't fix the problem. Anybody have any suggestions I would REALLY appreciate it. I love Ubuntu but this is just not good.

• Windows freezes, showing a random color or pattern

  I have a PC with windows 7, and I'm experiencing random freezes with increasing frequency. After some time (from 30 minutes to a few hours) the screen will shows a random color or pattern (vertical lines) and nothing works anymore, I need to reboot manually. I've checked the events log, but nothing is shown except for the unexpected reboot. I've tested the RAM with Memtest86+ 4.20, and the graphics card with FurMark 1.10.3, no errors have been found. I've updated the graphic drivers and openned the case to remove dust, but the issue is still there. Also, the problem doesn't seem to arise when I'm playing games fullscreen, but when I'm surfing the web, using itunes, or coding. My hardware is as follows : intel core i5 750 CPU, ATI Radeon HD 5670 graphics card, ASUSTeK P7P55D motherboard, two 2Gb KINGSTON DDR3 ram sticks, 2 SATA hard drives, a Netgear dongle for wifi.

• Winlogon Application Error

  This error is happening to 6 out of 32 computers. I have created a base image from scratch using Ghost Enterprise, but error still shows on the same machines. It happens at the log on prompt and after doing a soft reset the message goes away, but it comes back eventually. -Error message- The Instruction at "0X74eF400e" referenced Memory at "0X00000000" The memory could not be "Written". Winlogon.exe - Application Error Any reason why this is happening? I have tried to run a memTest but everything shows okay.

• New functionality in TFS Build Manager &ndash; Managing Triggers and Build Resources

  Yesterday we pushed out a new release (August 2012) of the Community TFS Build Extension, including a new version of the Community TFS Build Manager (1.0.4.6) The two big new features in the Build Manager in this release are: Set Triggers It is now possible to select one or more build definitions and update the triggers for them in one simple operation: You’ll note that we have started collapsing the context menu a bit, the list of commands are getting long! When selecting the Trigger command, you’ll see a dialog where the options should be self-explanatory: The only thing missing here is the Scheduled trigger option, you’ll have to do that using Team Explorer for now.   Manage Build Resources The other feature is that it is now possible to view the build controllers and agents in your current collection and also perform some actions against them. The new functionality is available by select the Build Resources item in the drop down menu: Selecting this, you’ll see a (sort of) hierarchical view of the build controllers and their agents: In this view you can quickly see all the resources and their status. You can also view the build directory of each build agent and the tags that are associated with them. On the action menu, you can enable and disable both agents and controllers (several at a time), and you can also select to remove them. By selecting Manage, you’ll be presented with the standard Manage Controller dialog from Visual Studio where you can set the rest of the properties. Hopefully we’ll be able to implement most of the existing functionality so that we can remove that menu option Our plan is to add more functionality to this view, such as adding new agents/controllers, restarting build service hosts, maybe view diagnostic information such as disk space and error logs.   Hope you’ll find the new functionality useful. • Windows 8 Remote Desktop only allows one user at a time?

  I tried connecting to Windows 8 using its built-in Remote Desktop feature, but for some inexplicable reason, it requires that no users are logged in on the target machine before a remote user can log in. This has never been a problem with rdesktop on Unixen; I could rdesktop from as many machines as I wanted and any logged-in users would never notice a thing. What's the problem with Windows? Any way to allow concurrent local and remote logins to a Windows 8 machine without hacks or cracks? The "guides" on how to do this that show up in the Google results all suggest replacing a system DLL with a hacked one, but that's not acceptable.

• Route a specific user's traffic via VPN but still allow local networking

  So, I want to route certain traffic via a VPN connection and the rest via my normal Internet connection. I want to run several different programs and most of them don't support binding to a specific network interface (tun0 in my case). I've managed to send a specific user's traffic via the VPN following the answers given here: iptables - Target to route packet to specific interface? But unfortunately, when I run a server that connects to the Internet and has a web interface running on a local IP (127.0.0.1/192.168.0.*), all the Internet traffic correctly goes via tun0, but I'm unable to connect to the web interface from a local IP as a different user. When I log in as the VPN-ified user, I can access services running on local IPs, but other users/machines can't access any servers I start. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

• Excel Countif external date

  I am making an Excel 2010 spreadsheet to log support calls, services, and installations that each member would fill out. Due to being paid by job rather than by hour, there is a need for it to count each of these ("Call", "Service", "Install") there is in any given time span. The entry of the data itself would be in Sheet 1, and then a 'splash screen' of sorts would be in Sheet 2. Here I would like to be able to put a date range and it would display how many of each there is. I already can do the COUNTIF statement, =COUNTIF(Activity!$B:$B,"Call") but I don't know how to: a) Add in the prerequisite for a date so it only gets "Calls" within a certain time frame. b) Take the date it looks for from a cell on the splash screen.

• Dual displays not working - NVidia - Ubuntu 12.4

  Graphics Card: NVidia 460 GTX. Driver: NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (version current) I have one DVI monitor, an old Dell LCD from 2005, and one VGA monitor, an Asus ML238H from 2010 whose HDMI port broke. The Asus is plugged into my graphics card's primary monitor slot and is the better monitor even though it is VGA but my computer defaults to the Dell. This happens when I boot as well; the loading screens, the motherboard brand image, etc. are all displayed on the Dell monitor until Windows loads. Then both monitors work. The same thing happened when I booted up Ubuntu 12.4 but I did not see the second monitor when the log-in screen popped up, nor did I when I logged in. I went to System Settings/Displays and my Asus monitor is not an option. I clicked Detect Displays and the Asus is not detected. I looked at the other questions regarding NVIDIA drivers and recalled my problems with Ubuntu a few years ago and decided to check the driver. I went to Additional Drivers to install the proprietary driver and it looks like it's installed and active but I'm still having this problem. There is another driver option, the post-release NVIDIA driver, but that does not fix the problem either. Also, under System Details/Graphics the graphics device is listed as Unknown, which might indicate that it is using an open source generic driver and not the proprietary NVidia driver. But under Additional Drivers it says that I am using the NVidia driver. Any help is appreciated.

• no boot option after install ubuntu 12.04 LTS using cd

  im facing a problem. after installing Ubuntu 12.04 LTS using boot from CD, when reboot there is no boot option to choose the OS. i directly log in to my Windows 7. before this im having an issue with the 'nomodeset' if not mistaken. after tick [x] on the nomodeset, i can install my Ubuntu, and stuck again at choosing the partition. so i had done 2 partitions for ubuntu, 1 partition for ubuntu ( ext3, mount /) and the other 1 for swap. then i can proceed until finished the installation. and after the system want to reboot. it take some times and just stuck at the screen doing nothing. not rebooting at all. i force to shutdown then restart again then directly go into windows 7 without boot option. in win7 the partitions for ubuntu is gone. i had tried the boot-repair thing and still doesn't help. it just show up the _ (terminal thing i guess). i typed boot repair and still the same. im using acer aspire 4736z. please anybody help me with this issue.

• Password not accepted when resuming from sleep

  My HP Pavilion dv-series notebook will not accept the user account password for the logged in user when resuming from sleep - message returned is Incorrect Password. Simply selecting the Switch User option reloads the login screen and allows me to log in as the same user with the same password that was originally rejected. And, yes I've tried it more than one (hundred) times in case you were thinking it's just a case of slippery fingers. Another interesting point is that it appears to be independent of the software running on the machine. Since the issue first appeared, I have done two clean installs where all HD partitions were wiped and new ones created during fresh installation of the OS. The first such clean install was of Ubuntu (Lucid) 10.04 amd-64, the second of Win 7 Pro 64 (from boxed disc and activated post install). Exactly the same symptoms, described above, are exhibited on both platforms. Have engaged in significant amount of Googling an come up empty so any ideas are welcome.

• Unable to format/add a partition to Windows XP

  I recently add a 1T disk to an XP machine. I found the disk in the "disk management", I click "initialize" to init it, then creates a primary partition with size 950G, then select quick format to format the disk, the "disk management" will then complains: The disk configuration operation did not complete. Check the system event log for more information on the error. Verify the status of your storage devices before retrying. If that does not solve the problem, close the disk management console, then restart disk management or restart the computer. What could be the reason?

  On my Debian server running a Django website, I have an error when I need to send an email. The error received is Exception Type: gaierror Exception Value: [Errno -2] Name or service not known Exception Location: /usr/lib/python2.6/socket.py in create_connection, line 547 You can see the full error log here. After testing, it seems it is my firewall that blocks the request. You can see my iptable file (/etc/init.d/firewall). I think the problem comes from the two commented lines that were supposed to accepts all established connections. When I uncomment them, I have an error iptables: No chain/target/match by that name.   I know how to have six symbols on one key thanks to this question: Xmodmap: Six characters to one key? However, when I have two layouts and switch them, weird things happen. I have the following (well, different, but this is easier to talk about) line in my xmodmap: keycode 31 = a A b B c C When I log in, everything works as you would expect. Pressing key 31 give a, with Shift A, with AltGr c and C respectively and with ISO_Level3_Shift. However, when I change the layout, key 31 gives me b and B with shift and c and C with AltGr. This is on Ubuntu 11.10 under Ubuntu. Does anybody undestand what is happening? Could I restrict xmodmap to just one layout?

• how do I fix 12.04 which has crashed after the latest update

  I added a new drive to my system because the old one was full and stopped. I installed 12.04 at the same time, onto the new drive using a flash disk while off line. The system performs fine on 12.04 from the flash disk and it booted from the new drive OK and I was able to recover all my old data. The updater suggested that I update, so I went ahead and did so. At the end of which it wanted to reboot. I went ahead but on reboot I get to the log in prompt and then the whole system crashes. It tries to recover and then performs a bug report during which it tells me that a whole bunch of files are out of date (these would be the new ones I just updated!) and the screen goes black. Game over. I've tried to reboot several times ... same result. I can boot off the flash drive OK. How do I restore the system I had before the update, without over writing all my hard earned recovered data? Or how do I identify the "new updates" that are causing me grief?

• Cannot Login as root

  At my work we ship our product on pre-installed servers as a software/hardware package. We are using open SUSE 10.3 for the OS and we setup and we always log in with the root user to do maintenance on the box. Recently we just had box returned to us that the customer said the could not longer connect to the box through the network interface. So when I started to work on the box I run into the this problem: At the command prompt to login i type the user name "root" and hit enter. Then even before it asks me for a password I get "Login incorrect". I have never seen this behavior before and could not find any information about it online. Does anybody know what is going on? I have the following lines in my nginx config: location /icinga { root /usr/share/icinga/htdocs; index index.html; auth_basic "Restricted"; auth_basic_user_file /etc/icinga/htpasswd.users; } However, i get an error 404 and a log entry that says: *10 open() "/usr/share/icinga/htdocs/icinga" failed (2: No such file or directory), So it seems that nginx appends the location value to the root value. I think i figured it out how to prevent this some time ago, but i did not document it for myself and have forgotten how to do it. And now i can't fix it for myself. Can you tell me how to prevent this behaviour?

• Run 2008 R2 Service under 2000 Domain Account

  I'm trying to get a service to run under a domain account. When I try to add the account, I get the error The account name is invalid or does not exist, or the password is invalid for the account name specified I know the account exists and the password is correct. I am also having trouble adding it manually to the "Log on as a service" setting, I get the error An extended error has occured. Failed to save Local Policy Database After a day of research I'm starting to suspect it has to do with it being a 2008 R2 server trying to use a 2000 domain account. I've tried to change the LAN Manager authentication level and the Minimum session security looks okay per my Google digging. I'm not sure what else I can do?

• OpenVPN on port 53

  I have an openvpn server setup on UDP port 53 on a public IP. All the connecting clients gets pushed external DNS servers such as 8.8.8.8 and opendns. Sometimes the resolution stops working on the connected vpn clients and I get strange packets in the openvpn log. Now my question is why is that? When a VPN client, let's say 192.168.1.22 does a DNS query that query should go to 8.8.8.8:53 and then an UDP response packet should be sent back to 192.168.1.22 on a high UDP port. Any ideas? • Someone tried to hack my Node.js server, need to understand a GET request in the logs

  Alright, so I left my Node.js server alone for a while and came back to find some really interesting stuff in the logs. Apparently some moron from China or Poland tried to hack my server using directory traversal and what not, while it seems though he did not succeed I am unable understand few entries in the log. How did the hacker even manage to send a GET request to my server such that "http://www.google.com" shows up in the log while my server is simply an API that works on relative URLs such as "/api/login". And, while I looked up the OPTIONS, TRACE and PROPFIND HTTP requests that my server has logged it would be great if someone could explain what exactly was the hacker trying to achieve by using these verbs? Also what in the world does "[90m [32m [90m1ms - 240b[0m" mean? The "ms" makes sense, probably milliseconds for the request, rest I am unable to understand. Thank you!

• http request terminating early

  I noticed that on some of my sites, images were occasionally not getting downloaded fully. After a bit of investigation it appears that it is not restricted to images - .css, .js etc were also occasionally terminating early. The faults appear to be random. When I use the debug/proxy tool Fiddler2 reports that fewer bytes have been received than were requested. Firebug reports "Image corrupt or truncated". Obviously this is mainly a concern between me and my hosting company. However despite many emails they have not been able to get to the bottom of it. Transfer to another hosting company is obviously an option but is really a last resort. Has anyone seen this kind of thing before or can anyone suggest what might be causing it. Or any apache setting or something that I can ask them to check out. Will apache log this kind of error - they havent been able to provide me with any logs, but if I know exactly where things have been logged, maybe I can prompt them in to action.

• Exceptions from automongobackup, yet script completes

  I am using automongobackup to, well, automate the backups of mongodb. output from the script (to STDERR) has the following exceptions (but the backup completes, and the dump files are created) ###### WARNING ###### STDERR written to during mongodump execution. The backup probably succeeded, as mongodump sometimes writes to STDERR, but you may wish to scan the error log below: exception: connect failed exception: connect failed exception: connect failed exception: connect failed exception: HostAndPort: bad port # exception: connect failed exception: connect failed exception: connect failed exception: connect failed exception: connect failed exception: connect failed I know that the Host & Port are correct. If I run mongodump --host=127.0.0.1:27017 --journal (which is the effective command from automongobackup based on the options set and my reading of the src code) everything runs clean without any error reporting and the dump files are created as expected. Why would automongobackup report connection errors, even tho it does create the dump files, yet a straight call to mongodump does not? • Crontab stopped unexpectedly

  I have following entries in the crontab: 0 0 * * * /mnt/voylla-production/releases/20131111011431/script/rubber cron --task util:rotate_logs --directory=/mnt/voylla-production/releases/20131111011431/log 0 4 * * * /mnt/voylla-production/releases/20131111011431/voylla_scripts/cj_daily.sh 0 2 * * 6 /mnt/voylla-production/releases/20131111011431/voylla_scripts/cj_saturday.sh I worked fine until today. It didn't run as scheduled after a capistrano deploy, didn't get a mail either. It worked fine earlier, and I am unable to understand what wrong. The only change that was made was the deploy, but I think it should not affect the cron. I tried using pgrep cron to see if crons is working. It gives 904 as output. Could someone please help.
