• How do I boot a virtual machine image from my network?

  I have many machines which require the same configurations. My goal is to boot them all from the network and load a virtual machine. It would be wonderful to have one image for all of our customer service machines. That way, I could load the virtual image, perform updates, and know the next time they boot up they will have all the changes. Ideally, the machines would store the image locally and only download a new image if there has been a change. With all the information out there on "desktop virtualization", "PXE booting", and "virtual machines", I feel lost. I have been reading for hours and feel like I have only just scratched the surface. I would like to do this using open source or free software. Any suggestions?

• P2V using Acronis True Image Home 10 and Windows 7

  I have a full system image using Acronis True Image Home 10 and want to run it as a virtual machine on Windows 7 Professional. I have created a virtual machine but Windows Virtual PC doesn't allow access to a USB external hard disk when booting from the Acronis Recovery CD. I've copied the backup onto the host machine and I can access it via the network using the Acronis boot CD but I'm wondering if there is an easier way? Does any other free Virtual Machine software support USB devices during boot (i.e. I can restore a backup image from the USB hard disk directly)

• Remap Apple MacBook Eject key in Windows?

  I have a MacBook with Windows 7 on it as my daily driver. My MacBook has a nearly useless Eject key, but I wish it was a forward delete key. KeyRemap4Macboook works great in OS X. Is there any software that is equivalent in Windows? I have tried KeyTweaks and HotKeys and neither of them will recognize the Eject key. I looked it up and I think it is key 161. Is there any way to make the key into a more useful forward delete? Could I just go into the registry and do it that way?

• Migration of PowerBuilder application to multiplatform

  I developed a client/server application with PowerBuilder in the past for medical clinics and done maintenance for it until now. Now, some clients are asking me to develop a release for Mac/Linux and need some advice about what programming language/technology is best suited for it and the learning curve. It’s not a very very big program but I’m the only developer and have done it in my spare time. PowerBuilder is very productive for this kind of projects (database centric), but it’s not multiplatform and it’s hard to sell PowerBuilder application now days (web, .NET, java sells a lot better with his marketing). My programming skills: - I studied C and C++ in the past (university) but never used it on real projects - Have some Java experience but not in desktop applications - Some experience with Ruby on Rails for web projects - Good skills with PowerBuilder and C# (.NET) (there are my main developing languages) My first dilemma is if I change the desktop application to a web interface, but I think the user will lose some user-experience, and some doctors don’t have a clinic (they are alone at home with my software). I think installing a web application (with webserver) for one user will be overwhelming. If I continue developing desktop application, what is at the moment a good framework/toolset to learn having my skills? Somebody has had similar experiences? A lot of thanks

• Low graphic mode after switching to fglrx drivers

  I have another problem on my laptop after trying to fix another issue. So, because of this issue, I wanted to switch to fglrx to fix it and after restart, I got this screen: I went back to terminal and I got rid of this problem by "purge"-ing the fglrx driver and removing it, going back to problem number one. I tried lot of methods to fix this such as this ones but they ether switched back to open-source drivers or didn't helped at all. So would anyone like to help? maybe give some commends to try? My Laptop has 2 GPU, AMD Radeon HD 7650M and Intel(R) HD Graphics 4000. AMD is running always making my laptop too hot. Here's one of the Xorg.5.log file paste, I am sure it will be useful finding my problem. Thanks! Please make answer easy to understand as I am not an expert, this problem is keeping me from being one. Also the AMD driver which can be downloaded from their site doesn't install, it says non compatible graphics card but Ubuntu Software Updater sure installs it.

• How do I start my career on a 3-year-old degree [on hold]

  I received my bachelor's degree in Com S (second major in math) in December 2011. I didn't have the best GPA (I was excellent at programming projects and had a deep understanding of CS concepts, but school is generally not the best format for displaying my strengths), and my only internship was with a now-defunct startup. After graduation I applied for several jobs, had a fair number of interviews, but never got hired. After a while, I got somewhat discouraged, and though I still said I was looking, and occasionally applied for something, my pace slowed down considerably. I remain convinced that software development is the right path for me, and that I could make a real contribution to someones work force, but I'm at a loss as to how I can convince anyone of this. My major problems are as follows. Lack of professional experience-- a problem for every entry-level programmer, I suppose, but everyone seems to want someone with a couple of years under their belt. Rustiness-- I've not really done any programming in about a year, and since school all I've really done is various programming competitions and puzzles. (codechef, hackerrank, etc.) I need a way to sharpen my skills. Long term unemployment-- while I had a basic fast-food job after I graduated, I've been truly unemployed for about a year now. Furthermore, no one has ever hired me as a programmer, and any potential employer is liable to wonder why. Old References-- my references are all college professors and one supervisor from my internship, none of whom I've had any contact with since I graduated. Confidence-- I have no doubt that I could be a good professional programmer, and make just about any employer glad that they hired me, but I'm aware of my red flags as a candidate, and have a hard time heading confidently into an interview. How can I overcome these problems and keep my career from being over before it starts?

• How to make AD highly available for applications that use it as an LDAP service

  Our situation We currently have many web applications that use LDAP for authentication. For this, we point the web application to one of our AD domain controllers using the LDAPS port (636). When we have to update the Domain Controller, this has caused us issues because one more web application could depend on any DC. What we want We would like to point our web applications to a cluster "virtual" IP. This cluster will consist of at least two servers (so that each cluster server could be rotated out and updated). The cluster servers would then proxy LDAPS connections to the DCs and be able to figure out which one is available. Questions For anyone that has had experience with this: What software did you use for the cluster? Any caveats? Or perhaps a completely different architecture to accomplish something similar?

• Which Open Source Licenses can address concerns for an Open Source Game Engine?

  I am on a team that is looking to open source an engine we are building. It's intended as an engine for Online RPG style games. We're writing it to work on both desktops and android platforms. I've been over to the OSI http://opensource.org/licenses/category to check out the most common licenses. However, this will be my first time going into an open source project and I wanted to know if the community had some insight into which licenses might be best suited. Key licensing concerns: Removing or limiting our liability (most already seem to cover this, but stating for completeness). We want other developers to be able to take part or all of our project and use it in their own projects with proper accreditation to our project. Licensing should not hinder someone's ability to quickly use the engine. They should be able to download a release and start using it without needing to wait on licensing issues. Game content (gfx, sound, etc.) that is not part of the engine should be allowed to be licensed separately. If someone is using our engine, they can retain full copy right of their content, including engine generated data. Our primary goal is exposure, which is why we're going open source to start with. Both for the project and for the individuals developing it. Are there any licenses that can require accreditation visible to players? While I'd put our primary goal as exposure, for licensing the accreditation is less of a concern. From what I've read through (and have been able to understand) it doesn't seem like any of the licenses cover anything that is produced by the licensed software. Are there any that state this specifically, or does simply not mentioning it leave it open for other licensing? Are there any other concerns that we should consider? Has anyone had any issues using any of these licenses?

• Error when running adprep32 /rodcprep, trying to add a 2008 domain controller to a 2003 domain

  I'm trying to migrate a Small Business Server 2003 to Server 2008 domain. The problem is when I run the adprep32 /rodcprep command as specified as the final step in Step 3 of this article: http://www.experts-exchange.com/Software/Server_Software/Email_Servers/Exchange/A_2881-Migrate-Small-Business-Server-2003-to-Exchange-2010-and-Windows-2008-R2.html I get an error "Adprep could not contact a replica for partition..." which is described in detail here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949257 I've also attached the AdPrep.log file for full details. So when I try to run DCPromo on my new Server 2008 PDC (it's not the PDC yet, but want it to be soon), I get an error saying that /rodcprep hasn't ran so there could be errors if I continue. Anyone ran into this or have any suggestions on how to help? Can Dsmgmt be ran on server 2003 to help solve this? Assuming it's a partition error.

• Real life example of an agile game development process outputs

  I'm trying to learn about applying agile methodologies to game development. But seems to be impossible to find real life examples. There seems to be plenty of material discussing how 'in principle' agile is applied to a game. But that is NOT what I am looking for. I have the Keith book. What I AMlooking for are real EXAMPLES of things like; Initial user stories Final user stories (complete, covering the entire game requirements) Acceptance criteria Task list Sprint backlogs (before and after each sprint) The agile books seem to have some limited examples, many of which seem contrived or limited. In this era of open source software, there must be a publicly available documented example of the process applied to a real game. I am asking specifically about games because they are so different from normal applications. Regular applications are built to all users to complete specific tasks in order to get stuff done(book a room, print a report etc). People play games for much less tangible reasons, so I think the process is significantly different. [it doesn't have to be scrum, it could be any process, just needs to be a real life example game and be reasonably complete]

  I am running Nginx 1.5.6 and I use the Simple Machines Forum software. Most rewrite rules seem to work properly, with the exception of the RSS feeds. In my Nginx configuration, I have the following line which is supposed to handle URLs which contain ".xml": rewrite ^/forum/(\.xml|xmlhttp)/?$ "/forum/index.php?pretty;action=$1" last; The above rule produces the following URL for the main forum, which returns a 403 Error: http://www.mydomain.com/forum/.xml/?type=rss I would like the rewrite rule to produce this type of URL, which returns code 200 (a real page): http://www.mydomain.com/forum/?type=rss;action=.xml Here is the entire block pertaining to the forum rewrites: http://pastebin.com/raw.php?i=tZkAibW3 I would really appreciate some help to create a rewrite rule to do that. • Library Organization in .NET

  I've written a .NET bitwise operations library as part of my projects (stuff ranging from get MSB set to some more complicated bitwise transformations) and I mean to release it as free software. I'm a bit confused about a design aspect of the library, though. Many of the methods/transformations in the library come with different endianness. A simple example is a getBitAt method that regards index 0 as the least significant bit, or the most significant bit, depending on the version used. In practice, I've found that using separate functions for different endianness results in much more comprehensible and reusable code than assuming all operations are little-endian or something. I'm really stumped regarding how best to package the library. Should I have methods that have LE and BE versions take an enum parameter in their signature, e.g. Endianness.Little, Endianness.Big? Should I have different static classes with identically named methods? such as MSB.GetBit and LSB.GetBit On a much wider note, is there a standard I could use in cases like this? Some guide? Is my design issue trivial? I have a perfectionist bent, and I sometimes get stuck on tricky design issues like this... Note: I've sort of realized I'm using endianness somewhat colloquially to refer to the order/place value of digital component parts (be they bits, bytes, or words) in a larger whole, in any setting. I'm not talking about machine-level endianness or serial transmission endianness. Just about place-value semantics in general. So there isn't a context of targeting different machines/transmission techniques or something.

Do I need special hardware/software combo to achieve this? If I can generate about 5 proxies and alternate amongst those 5 while browsing abc.com would be awesome. Please suggest.   I am having the issue, where, I have 2 folders called "My Documents". I recently edited my registry to make "Document" link in the Windows 7 start menu be a FOLDER link and not a LIBRARY link..   Due to a clicking and beeping problem on my Macbook Pro (MBP), I got a 1 to 1 replacement from Apple which arrived today. I was able to my original setting using Time Machine restore. That works great. But after the restore and software update, the click on Time Machine to back up. But it says it doesn't recognize the backups. Now I am doing a full backup again that will take me a better of an hour. So what's the problem? How come Time Machine does not recognise the backups it restore from?

  Some weird problem happened to my Maxtor 500GB external harddisk, it all started when it once freezed during some operation. Now when I insert the drive in a USB slot, Windows asks me to format it, and if I try to open the drive from my computer it says, "not accessible".. I tried most of the major partition managers and partition recovery software. All of these can see and access my partition normally. It showing the free space and used space correctly.   Hi, I have a phone landline connection and I DO NOT have a phone instrument. I connect the cable into my laptop, and want to make calls using my laptop. I have an HDA CX20561 modem. I seem to be able to dial number using dialer.exe, though nothing seems to happen. From Microsoft kb http://support.microsoft.com/kb/958143, it looks like dialer.exe alone is not enough for the call. • Agile project management, agile development: early integration

  I believe that agile works if everything is agile. In software development area, in my opinion, if team members' code is integrated early, code will be more in sync and this has a lot of pros: Early integration helps team members to avoid painful merges. Encourages better coding habits, because everyone makes sure that they don't break co-workers' code everyday. Both developers and architects (code reviewers) may detect bad design decisions or just wrong development directions in real-time, preventing useless work. Actually I'm talking about getting the latest version of code base and checking-in your own code to the source control in a daily basis. When you start your coding day (i.e. you arrive to your work), your first action is updating your code base with the latest version from the source control. In the other hand, when you're about an hour to leave from your work and go home, your last action is checking-in your code to the source control and be sure that your day work doesn't break the project's build process. Rather than updating and checking-in your code once you finished an entire task, I believe the best approach is fixing small and flexible personal milestones and checking-in the code once you finish one of these. I really believe that this coding approach fits better in the agile project management concept. Do you know some document, blog post, wiki, article or whatever that you can suggest me that could be in sync with my opinion?. And, do you find any problem working with this approach?. • SSL to SSL Redirects in IIS - Possible?

  We have a situation where we would like to redirect https://service1.domain.com to https://service2.domain.com. I know this is very simple with http endpoints, but I'm not too sure about https. We have some legacy windows application web service clients that will not be updating their software version soon, and we cannot update their web references to https://service2.domain.com. Is there any way to leave these web service clients pointing to https://service1.domain.com, but have their requests forwarded to (and responded to by) https://service2.comain.com? The old server is running IIS 6.0. The new server is running IIS 7.0. We could probably upgrade it to 7.5 if needed, but I'm not certain. We could also probably make a seamless transition of the old web service to a new server using public DNS, but we cannot change the DNS name of "service1.domain.com." Thanks ServerFault!
