• Strange problem on some client's browsers

  We are fighting a strange problem on the company that I work. We created a site of a promotion to a client where its consumers can register products barcodes to win prizes. The site was created using PHP and MySQL. The site uses SSL on every form. However, some consumers report to the client's call-center they was no able make a registration at the site. We try everything, but we cannot, by no ways, reproduce the problem. The consumers reported the problem on several browsers ranging from IE8 to Firefox, the problem is same on everyone them. One co-woker this weekend was able to catch this same bug on his wife's notebook and brought her computer to the company so we could test. However, here on the company the problem didn't happened and we can make the registration normally. We suppose this problem could be a matter of encoding and special characteres like ã and ç. But we are sure that all source files are UTF8- with BOM. We also suspect of MSXml version, but we are note sure anymore. Because of legal impediments the client cannot ask the consumers to install anything on they computers to test or fix the problem. Sorry but by complience rules we also cannot share the url of the site, what is a pity. I know it is too much on vacuun, but perhaps you could had crossed something similar. Thank you

• '£' character does not seem to encode properly - expect '%a3' but get '%u00a3'

  Hello, I want to send The pound sign character i.e. '£' encoded as ISO-8859-1 across the wire. • Why does Java automatically decode %2F in URI encoded filenames?

  I have a java servlet that needs to write out files that have a user-configurable name. I am trying to use URI encoding to properly escape special characters, but the JRE appears to automatically convert encoded forward slashes (%2F) into path separators. Example: File dir = new File("C:\Documents and Setting\username\temp"); String fn = "Top 1/2.pdf"; URI uri = new URI( dir.toURI().toASCIIString() + URLEncoder.encoder( fn, "UTF-8" ).toString() ); File out = new File( uri ); System.out.println( dir.toURI().toASCIIString() ); System.out.println( URLEncoder.encoder( fn, "UTF-8" ).toString() ); System.out.println( uri.toASCIIString() ); System.out.println( output.toURI().toASCIIString() ); The output is: file:/C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/username/temp/ Top+1%2F2.pdf file:/C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/username/temp/Top+1%2F2.pdf file:/C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/username/temp/Top+1/2.pdf After the new File object is instantiated, the %2F sequence is automatically converted to a forward slash and I end up with an incorrect path. Does anybody know the proper way to approach this issue? The core of the problem seems to be that uri.equals( new File(uri).toURI() ) == FALSE when there is a '%2F' in the URI. I'm planning to just use the URLEncoded string verbatim rather than trying to use the File(uri) constructor.

  I have a controller with the following two Edit methods. The edit form displays correctly with all additional dropdown lists from the FormViewModel. However, when I changed some field values and submitted the form. None of the changed fields were saved. The fields in the postbask collection have default or null values. I have another edit form which update another table. On submit, the changed values are saved. • Apple Push Notifications With Foreign Accent Characters Not Receiving

  I'm sending push notifications and when the message contains foreign characters (Turkish in my case) like I, s, ç, g... The message does not arrive to devices. And other ways like iconv() didn't work for me, some of them cropped Turkish characters, some didn't receive at all. I also have header('content-type: text/html; charset: utf-8'); and <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8" /> in my page. I don't think the problem appears while I set the value but maybe with pack() function. Any ideas to solve this without replacing characters with English?

• Convert extended ASCII characters to it's right presentation using Console.ReadKey() method and ConsoleKeyInfo variable

  Readed about 30 minutes, and didn't found some specific for this in this site. Suppose the following, in C#, console application: ConsoleKeyInfo cki; cki = Console.ReadKey(true); Console.WriteLine(cki.KeyChar.ToString()); //Or Console.WriteLine(cki.KeyChar) as well Console.ReadKey(true); Now, let's put ¿ in the console entry, and asign it to cki via a Console.ReadKey(true). What will be shown isn't the ¿ symbol, the ¨ symbol is the one that's shown instead. And the same happens with many other characters. Examples: ñ shows ¤, ¡ shows -, ´ shows ï. Now, let's take the same code snipplet and add some things for a more Console.ReadLine() like behavior: string data = string.Empty; ConsoleKeyInfo cki; for (int i = 0; i < 10; i++) { cki = Console.ReadKey(true); data += cki.KeyChar; } Console.WriteLine(data); Console.ReadKey(true); The question, how to handle this by the right way, end printing the right characters that should be stored on data, not things like ¨, ¤, -, ï, etc? Please note that I want a solution that works with ConsoleKeyInfo and Console.ReadKey(), not use other variable types, or read methods. EDIT: Because ReadKey() method, that comes from Console namespace, depends on Kernel32.dll and it definetively bad handles the extended ASCII and unicode, it's not an option anymore to just find a valid conversion for what it returns. The only valid way to handle the bad behavior of ReadKey() is to use the cki.Key property that's written in cki = Console.ReadKey(true) execution and apply a switch to it, then, return the right values on dependence of what key was pressed. I think that there's not such substitutes, but a confirmed answer would be usefull. EDIT2: HA! Found the way, for something I used for so many times Windows 98 SE. There are the codepages, the ones responsibles for how's presented the info in the console. ReadLine() reconfigures the codepage to use properly the extended ASCII and Unicode characters. ReadKey() leaves it in EN-US default (codepage 850). Just use a codepage that prints the characters you want, and that's all. Refer to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Code_page for some of them :) So, for the Ñ key press, the solution is this: Console.OutputEncoding = Encoding.GetEncoding(1252); //Also 28591 is valid for `Ñ` key, and others too string data = string.Empty; ConsoleKeyInfo cki; cki = Console.ReadKey(true); data += cki.KeyChar; Console.WriteLine(data); Console.ReadKey(true); Simple :) Now I'm wrrr with myself... how could I forget those codepages!? • Asp.Net Export to Excel - Japanese Characters

  I am currently using Visual Studio 2008 for my ASP .NET application. I am trying to Export some reports with Japanese Characters to Excel via the Response object. When I try to Export, all the Japanese characters looks garbled. It works fine with Chinese Characters. Here is what I tried: I tried Installed Japanese Language Pack / Encoding to UTF-8 / UTF-7 / Shift-JIS / Globalization (Web.Config) .. but no luck. Any Ideas how this can be fixed ? • Why would I be getting IXFR and AXFR transfer denied on my DNS server?

  From everything I've researched and tried, it appears that my named.conf is configured correctly, including the allow-transfer section. Here is a sample of the errors. It is only happening with a couple of my secondary servers, but it is happening for every zone for those servers that are failing. One of the servers is attempting IXFR, the other AXFR. • Where do vendors publish internal transfer rates of HDDs?

  So I've started to dig into storage fundamentals and found that in order to calculate the IOPS of a HDD you need to know the internal transfer rate of the drive (time it takes data to move from the platters to internal disk's cache). I went on newegg and even a few vendor sites and could not find this info published for any HDDs. Is it sometimes called something else? Take this link to a seagate HDD for instance. Nowhere do I see "internal transfer rate", but I do see something called "Sustained Data Rate OD"- is that the same thing? Just so you know where I'm getting this info (Book: "Information Storage and Management Storing, Managing..."): Consider an example with the following specifications provided for a disk: The average seek time is 5 ms in a random I/O environment; therefore, T = 5 ms. Disk rotation speed of 15,000 revolutions per minute or 250 revolutions per second — from which rotational latency (L) can be determined, which is one-half of the time taken for a full rotation or L = (0.5/250 rps expressed in ms). 40 MB/s internal data transfer rate, from which the internal transfer time (X) is derived based on the block size of the I/O — for example, an I/O with a block size of 32 KB; therefore X = 32 KB/40 MB. Consequently, the time taken by the I/O controller to serve an I/O of block size 32 KB is (TS) = 5 ms + (0.5/250) + 32 KB/40 MB = 7.8 ms. Therefore, the maximum number of I/Os serviced per second or IOPS is (1/TS) = 1/(7.8 × 10^-3) = 128 IOPS.

• How do I maximize and check my gigabit transfer rate?

  I'm trying to maximize my LAN transfer speed. LAN cards and switch are all gigabit on a CAT 6 cable. Modes are set correctly to 1000 full duplex. CentOS server Testing with ftp from both windows and fedora, I'm only having the speed around 11MB/s. On windows I notice that the first few seconds of file transfer I'm actually getting around 25MB/s before it drops to 11MB/s Can anyone please recommend me what my next step should be to increase this performance? Are there any utilities I can use to test the file transfer speed without taking hard drive speed into consideration? The only thing I know is the MTU which I will have to wait until the office hour is over before I can play with it. If there are anything else I should be aware of, please please let me know. • Netcat UDP File Transfer Between Two Servers Times Out?

  I'm testing file transfer speeds between two Red Hat servers that are connected to the same switch within the data center and I decided to use netcat to eliminate protocol overhead as much as possible. Testing in TCP mode went well and I was wondering how UDP might fare. On my receiving (client) end, I ran this: nc -u -l 11225 -v > myfile.out And then on the sending (server) end I ran the following: cat myfile.out | nc -u myserver.foo.zzz.com 11225 -v The file I'm testing with is 38 GB but the transfer seems to stop at around 15 GB (one time at 14.9, another at 15.6). I've tested by adding a "-w 5000" just in case it's timing out but no joy. Adding the -v doesn't show anything except acknowledging that the connection occurred. No errors. So - any suggestions as to why would the transfer cease?

I have transferred all my settings using Transfer Files and Settings Wizard, however in Win 7 there is a new mail client called Windows Mail, and I cannot see any option in it to import the Outlook Express mails. How can I transfer my emails from WinXP computer to a Vista or Win7 OS?

• Is there any chance that my data will get silently corrupted with a robocopy SMB network transfer?

  I'm setting up a NAS box for the first time. At the moment, I have most of my data backed up to a few local hard drives, and I intend to transfer all the data to my NAS over ethernet once the RAID array is setup. Since this is all happening over the network, I'm a bit worried about my data getting corrupted silently during transfer. From what I understand, data generally doesn't get corrupted without notice on local transfers because a checksum is performed at some point by the drive or the OS. (This could be totally wrong.) Does the same thing happen with SMB, or is it up to the transferrer to check the integrity of their data? And if it doesn't happen with SMB, is there a protocol that does ensure data integrity? I know that rsync can checksum a transfer, but I'm on Windows and I already have a robocopy configuration that I like. Will my data be safe or do I have to use an external checksum tool to make sure?

• USB Hub and Ubuntu

  I have a powered 7 port hub connected to my Ubuntu box and it does nothing. The devices (zip drive and web cam) work direct, but aren't recognized through the hub. This worked fine in Windows 7. I can't prove it is the OS because this is a new motherboard and processor. Any advice? I need to be able to perform the same or similar function on my PC installed with Ubuntu 10.04 (LTS). I would like to plug the camera in (USB), and then be able to select the files I want. At the moment, the camera does not seem to recognise the PC. I do not want to rely on the Windows PC anymore.

Except at the moment I do not have internet connection (i'm using a unsecured connection) and i'm using my Windows 7 Laptop to get a connection to the web. I would love to install some useful apps on the desktop, but I can't figure out how to do this, is there any way to download Ubuntu/Linux apps on my windows computer and put them into a USB then transfer to the desktop?

• Allow a web designer to modify DNS without letting them transfer the domain?

  We are in the process of having a web designer create a new website for us, but I don't want to give access to the control panel for the domain names (and have no way to limit it, it seems), while at the same time I don't want to be the go between guy for editing the settings. Is there a way or a service for me to point the domains at a 3rd party DNS system, that I can then give access for the web designer, without worrying that he can find my personal info or try and transfer my domain out?

• Encryption is hard: AES encryption to Hex

  So, I've got an app at work that encrypts a string using ColdFusion. ColdFusion's bulit-in encryption helpers make it pretty simple: encrypt('string_to_encrypt','key','AES','HEX') What I'm trying to do is use Ruby to create the same encrypted string as this ColdFusion script is creating. Unfortunately encryption is the most confusing computer science subject known to man. I found a couple helper methods that use the openssl library and give you a really simple encryption/decryption method. Here's the resulting string: "\370\354D\020\357A\227\377\261G\333\314\204\361\277\250" Which looks unicode-ish to me. I've tried several libraries to convert this to hex but they all say it contains invalid characters. Trying to unpack it results in this: string = "\370\354D\020\357A\227\377\261G\333\314\204\361\277\250" string.unpack('U') ArgumentError: malformed UTF-8 character from (irb):19:in `unpack' from (irb):19 At the end of the day it's supposed to look like this (the output of the ColdFusion encrypt method): F8E91A689565ED24541D2A0109F201EF Of course that's assuming that all the padding, initialization vectors, salts, cypher types and a million other possible differences all line up. Here's the simple script I'm using to encrypt/decrypt: def aes(m,k,t) (aes = OpenSSL::Cipher::Cipher.new('aes-256-cbc').send(m)).key = Digest::SHA256.digest(k) aes.update(t) << aes.final end def encrypt(key, text) aes(:encrypt, key, text) end def decrypt(key, text) aes(:decrypt, key, text) end Any help? Maybe just a simple option I can pass to OpenSSL::Cipher::Cipher that will tell it to hex-encode the final string?

  Hello, I am attempting to integrate FFMPEG into my asp.net website. The process I am trying to complete is to upload a video, check if it is .avi, .mov, or .wmv and then convert this video into an mp4 using x264 so my flash player can play it. I am using an http handler (ashx) file to handle my upload. This is where I am also putting my conversion code. I am not sure if this is the best place to put it, but I wanted to see if i could at least get it working. Additionally, I was able to complete the conversion manually through cmd line. • Problem retrieving Strings from varbinary columns using HIbernate and MySQL

  Hello, Here's my scenario. I save a bunch of Strings containing asian characters in MySQL using Hibernate. These strings are written in varbinary columns. Everything works fine during the saving operation. The DB contains the correct values (sequence of bytes). If I query (again using Hibernate) for the Strings that I saved I get the correct results. But when Hibernate fills the entity to which the Strings belong with the values from the DB I get different values then the ones I used in the query that retrieved them. Instead of receiving the correct values I receive a bunch of FFFD replacement characters. For example: if I store "??" in the DB and then I query for it, the resulting String will be \uFFFD\uFFFD\uFFFD\uFFFD\uFFFD\uFFFD. the DB connection has the following parameters set useUnicode=true&characterEncoding=UTF-8, I've tried using the true UTF-8 configurations for Hibernate but that didn't solve the problem What am I missing?
