• Custom RoleProvider with MVC 2.0 webconfig

  I have a custom MembershipProvider and a custom RoleProvider. I created the custom MembershipProvider by creating a SimpleMembershipProvider class which implements the MembershipProvider class. After that I changed my web.config and works. So I used the same approach creating a custom RoleProvider. Nothing special, just creating a SimpleRoleProvider class which implements the RoleProvider class.   We have a .net 3.5 web app that consumes third party web services. The proxy was created by adding a web reference to their wsdl. This proxy is not compiled. Originally there was a route issue, which was resolved. We're still getting the inner exception with socket errors. We had MS support involved today, and they looked at some traces and network captures. The web service host does round-robin DNS, and they may be responding on a different IP address for the syn syn/ack from one ip, and the next from a different ip. This is not good. This is likely quite specific to our situation, but perhaps it applies to others as well. Microsoft Network Monitor and an application trace got us the information we needed.

• Databinding to ObservableCollection in a different UserControl?

  Question re-written on 2010-03-24 I have two UserControls, where one is a dialog that has a TabControl, and the other is one that appears within said TabControl. I'll just call them CandyDialog and CandyNameViewer for simplicity's sake. There's also a data management class called Tracker that manages information storage, which for all intents and purposes just exposes a public property that is an ObservableCollection. As long as CandyNames is populated first, and then the consumer UserControl is displayed, all of the names are there. I obviously don't get any errors in the Output Window or anything like that. The issue I have is that when the ObservableCollection is modified from the model, those changes are not reflected in the consumer UserControl! I've never had this problem before; all of my previous uses of ObservableCollection updated fine, although in those cases I wasn't databinding across assemblies. Although I am currently only adding and removing candy names to/from the ObservableCollection, at a later date I will likely also allow renaming from the model side. Is there something I did wrong? Is there a good way to actually debug this? Reed Copsey indicates here that inter-UserControl databinding is possible. Unfortunately, my favorite Bea Stollnitz article on WPF databinding debugging doesn't suggest anything that I could use for this particular problem.

• Issues with MIPS interrupt for tv remote simulator

• Bugs in Excel's ActiveX combo boxes?

  I have noticed that I get all sorts of annoying errors when: I have ActiveX comboboxes on a worksheet (not an excel form) The comboboxes have event code linked to them (eg, onchange events) I use their listfillrange or linkedcell properties (clearing these properties seems to alleviate a lot of problems) (Not sure if this is connected) but there is data validation on the targeted linkedcell. I program a fairly complex excel application that does a ton of event handling and uses a lot of controls. Over the months, I have been trying to deal with a variety of bugs dealing with those combo boxes. I can't recall all the details of each instance now, but these bugs tend to involve pointing the listfillrange and linkedcell properties at named ranges, and often have to do with the combo box events triggering at inappropriate times (such as when application.enableevents = false). These problems seemed to grow bigger in Excel 2007, so that I had to give up on these combo boxes entirely (I now use combo boxes contained in user forms, rather than directly on the sheets). Has anyone else seen similar problems? If so, was there a graceful solution? I have looked around with Google and so far haven't spotted anyone with similar issues. Some of the symptoms I end up seeing are: Excel crashing when I start up (involves combobox_onchange, listfillrange-named range on another different sheet, and workbook_open interactions). (note, I also had some data validation on the the linked cells in case a user edited them directly.) Excel rendering bugs (usually when the combo box changes, some cells from another sheet get randomly drawn over the top of the current sheet) Sometimes it involves the screen flashing entirely to another sheet for a moment. Excel losing its mind (or rather, the call stack) (related to the first bullet point). Sometimes when a function modifies a property of the comboboxes, the combobox onchange event fires, but it never returns control to the function that caused the change in the first place. The combobox_onchange events are triggered even when application.enableevents = false. Events firing when they shouldn't (I posted another question on stack overflow related to this). At this point, I am fairly convinced that ActiveX comboboxes are evil incarnate and not worth the trouble. I have switched to including these comboboxes inside a userform module instead. I would rather inconvenience users with popup forms than random visual artifacts and crashing (with data loss).

• SQL 2008 R2 login/network issue

  I have a Windows Server 2008 R2 new clean install , not a VM, that I have added to a Windows Server 2003 based domain using my account which has domain admin rights. The domain functional level is 2003. I performed a clean install of SQL Server 2008 R2 using my account which has domain admin rights. The installation completed without any errors. I logged into SSMS locally and attempted to add another domain account by clicking Search, Advanced and finding the user in the domain. When I return to the "Dialog - New" window and click OK I receive the following error: Create failed for Login 'Domain\User'. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo) An exception occurred while executing a Transact-SQL statement or batch. (Microsoft.SqlServer.ConnectionInfo) Windows NT user or group 'Domain\User' not found. Check the name again. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 15401) I have verified that the firewall is off, tried adding a different domain user, tried using SA to add a user, installed the hotfix for KB 976494 and verified that the Local Security Policy for Domain Member: Digitally encrypt or sign secure channel Domain Member: Digitally encrypt secure channel Domain Member: Digitally sign secure channel are disabled none of which have made a difference. I can RDP to a Server 2003 server running SQL 2008 and add the same domain user without issue. Also if I try to connect with SSMS to the sql server from another system on the domain using my account I get the following error: Login failed. The login is from an untrusted domain and cannot be used with Windows authentication. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 18452) and on the database server I see the following in the security event log: An account failed to log on. • Enable button based on TextBox value (WPF)

  This is MVVM application. There is a window and related view model class. There is TextBox, Button and ListBox on form. Button is bound to DelegateCommand that has CanExecute function. Idea is that user enters some data in text box, presses button and data is appended to list box. I would like to enable command (and button) when user enters correct data in TextBox. Things work like this now: CanExecute() method contains code that checks if data in property bound to text box is correct. Text box is bound to property in view model UpdateSourceTrigger is set to PropertyChanged and property in view model is updated after each key user presses. Problem is that CanExecute() does not fire when user enters data in text box. It doesn't fire even when text box lose focus. How could I make this work? Edit: Re Yanko's comment: Delegate command is implemented in MVVM toolkit template and when you create new MVVM project, there is Delegate command in solution. As much as I saw in Prism videos this should be the same class (or at least very similar). Re Ben's and Abe's answers: CanExecuteChanged() is event handler and compiler complains: The event 'System.Windows.Input.ICommand.CanExecuteChanged' can only appear on the left hand side of += or -= there are only two more members of ICommand: Execute() and CanExecute() Do you have some example that shows how can I make command call CanExecute(). I found command manager helper class in DelegateCommand.cs and I'll look into it, maybe there is some mechanism that could help. Anyway, idea that in order to activate command based on user input, one needs to "nudge" command object in property setter code looks clumsy. It will introduce dependencies and one of big points of MVVM is reducing them. Is it possible to solve this problem by using dependency properties?

• Using GraphicsServices.h/GSEvent as well as compiling CLI iPhone tools with XCode

  I sent this to KennyTM (has all the private framework headers on GitHub) but I figured I'd ask here too just in case someone has some good ideas or any way to help me out. I'm trying to write a command line utility that sends GSEvents to operate the keyboard, touch/drag elements onscreen, and operate hardware buttons (volume, home, sleep, etc.) I grabbed the MouseSupport code and tried to look through it, but I couldn't find the easiest way to send GSEvents. I'm hoping someone here can help me. First, what's the simplest way to declare a GSEvent and send it? I looked at the iPhone development wiki, but the documentation was very vague. I understand that there's a purple event port (?) that I have to send these events to, but I don't understand how to do that. Could someone offer examples for, say, touching at a coordinate, typing a certain key, or pressing a hardware button? Also, do I have to write or do anything special if I want this utility to operate all applications as well as Springboard? I don't know if this is a special case because I want it at the OS level. Ideally, I would SSH into the phone, start the program, and it would send GSEvents that would be handled by whatever application was open. As far as compiling this code, is there any way to do so under XCode? I don't know what sort of project template I should use (if any) and this is throwing me off. I don't need "build and go" support, I'm more than happy to scp the program over to the phone. I understand that compiling the code is also feasible on the phone. I have all of the headers from the SDK on my phone along with iphone-gcc, but when compiling some test programs I still get errors about not finding mach headers and CoreFoundation. Is there an easier way to do this? Lastly, are there other guides or pieces of literature that anyone can point me towards for learning more about this? I'm excited to get into open iPhone development (I have experience with the official SDK, but I want to go deeper). Thanks for any and all help people can offer!

• Using 32bit COM object from C# or VBS on Vista 64bit and getting error 80004005

  I need some mind reading here, since I am trying to do what I do not completely understand. There is a 32-bit application (electronic trading application called CQG) which provides a COM API for external access. I have sample programs and scripts which access this API from Excel, .NET (C++, VB and C#) and shell VBScript. I have these .NET applications as source code and as compiled executables (32-bit, compiled on Windows XP). Now I have Windows Vista Home 64-bit which makes my head to spin. Excel examples work just fine (in Excel 2003). Compiled .NET sample executables work as well. But when I am trying to run .NET C# sample converted to and compiled by Visual Studio C# Expression, or run the VBScript script, I am getting error 80004005 when trying to create an object. Initially the .NET application also gave me 80040154 but then I figured how to make it produce 32-bit code and not 64-bit, so now the errors in C# and VBScript applications are the same. That's all the progress I got for now. And yes, I tried running 32-bit versions of cscript.exe/WScript from SysWOW64 folder on my VBS, but still the result is the same (80004005). How to solve this problem? I am almost ready to believe it is practically impossible, but the fact that Excel VBA works and .NET executables compiled on Windows XP run just fine just makes me angry. There should be a way to beat this thing (some secret which probably only Windows Vista developers know)! I will appreciate any help! PS: I believe code samples do not make much sense here, but this is the line of VBScript which fails: Set CEL = WScript.CreateObject("CQG.CQGCEL.4.0", "CEL_") And this is C#: CQGCEL CEL = new CQGCEL(); Update: Forgot to say UAC is off, of course. And I am working from account with administrator priviledges. I also tried watching which registry keys are read using Process Monitor but everything looks OK for GUIDs of this object. I could not recognize some other GUIDs so I am not sure whether they were critical or not. Is there a chance that this COM object uses Internet Explorer and gets the wrong one (like Internet Explorer 7 instead of Internet Explorer 6 engine or something)?

• Failed to load viewstate

  OK have just started getting this error and I'm not sure why. I have a hosting page which has listview and a panel with a usercontrol. The listview loads up records with a linkbutton. You click the link button to edit that particular record - which gets loaded up in the formview (within the usercontrol) which goes to edit mode. After an update occurs in the formview I'm triggering an event which my hosting page is listening for. The hosting page then rebinds the listview to show the updated data. We recently decided to upgrade to GWT 2.0. We've already updated the eclipse project and we are able to successfully run the application in dev-mode.   I am just learning MVVM with MEF and already see the benefits but I am a little confused about some implementation details. The app I am building has several Models that do the same with with different entities (WCF RIA Services exposing a Entity framework object) and I would like to avoid implementing a similar interface/model for each view I need and the following is what I have come up with though it currently doesn't work. The common interface has a new completed event for each model that implements the base model, this was the easiest way I could implement a common class as the compiler did not like casting from a child to the base type. The code as it currently sits compiles and runs but the is a null IModel being passed into the [ImportingConstructor] for the FaqViewModel class. • Getting uninitialized constant error when trying to run tests

  I just updated all my gems and I'm finding that I'm getting errors when trying to run Test::Unit tests. I'm getting the error copied below. That comes from creating new, empty Rails project, scaffolding a simple model, and running rake test. Tried Googling "uninitialized constant" and TestResultFailureSupport. The only thing I found was this bug report from 2007. I'm using OS X. • "Bad binary signature" in ASP.NET MVC application

  We are getting the error above on some pages of an ASP.NET MVC application when it is deployed to a 64 bit Windows 2008 server box. It works fine on our development machines, though these are 32 bit XP. Just wondered if anyone had encountered this before, and has any suggestions? Details as follows: Bad binary signature. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80131192) Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code. Exception Details: System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException: Bad binary signature. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80131192) All projects are set to compile for Any CPU, and are compiled in Release mode. The ASP.NET site is precompiled, and the precompiled build is on a 64 bit Windows 2008 TeamCity build agent. Thanks in advance. EDIT We're still plagued by this. I have looked at all the binaries in the website's bin directory using corflags.exe. None has the 32BIT flag set, and all have a CorFlags value of 9 except for Antlr3.Runtime.dll which has a value of 1. The problem only affects certain pages, and it seems to be those which use FluentValidation (including FluentValidation.Mvc and FluentValidation.xValIntegration assemblies). None of these shows anything out of the ordinary when inspected with corflags.exe, and there are no odd looking dependencies revealed by ildasm. When built locally (32 bit Windows XP) the site deploys and runs fine. When built on the build agents (64 bit Windows 2008 Server) the site displays these errors. • My neural network gets "stuck" while training. Is this normal?

  I'm training a XOR neural network via back-propagation using stochastic gradient descent. The weights of the neural network are initialized to random values between -0.5 and 0.5. The neural network successfully trains itself around 80% of the time. However sometimes it gets "stuck" while backpropagating. By "stuck", I mean that I start seeing a decreasing rate of error correction. Is my network getting stuck in a local minima instead of a global minima?

• WCF - Multiple schema HTTP and HTTPS in the same service

  I am trying to set up WCF service in production. The service has two bindings with two different interfaces. One endpoint (basicHttpBinding) is set up at HTTP and the other endpoint (wsHttpBinding) is set up securely over SSL. I can't get this scenario to work. Everything works with no problem if both endpoints are set up over HTTP. Before I even get into the specifics of errors I get, is is possible to run secure and insecure endpoint over the same service ? • Salesforce/PHP - Bulk Outbound message (SOAP), Time out issue

  Salesforce can send up to 100 requests inside 1 SOAP message. While sending this type of Bulk Ooutbound message request my PHP script finishes executing but SF fails to accept the ACK used to clear the message queue on the Salesforce side of things. Looking at the Outbound message log (monitoring) I see all the messages in a pending state with the Delivery Failure Reason "java.net.SocketTimeoutException: Read timed out". If my script has finished execution, why do I get this error? I have tried these methods to increase the execution time on my server as I have no access on the Salesforce side: set_time_limit(0); // in the script max_execution_time = 360 ; Maximum execution time of each script, in seconds max_input_time = 360 ; Maximum amount of time each script may spend parsing request data memory_limit = 32M ; Maximum amount of memory a script may consume I used the high settings just for testing. Any thoughts as to why this is failing the ACK delivery back to Salesforce? Could it be Apache? PHP? I have also tested just accepting the 100 request SOAP response and just accepting and sending the ACK the queue clears out, so I know it's on my side of things.
