• Server seems up, but accepts no connections whatsoever

  Hi, I have a problem with a Debian based Server, unfortunately housed in a remote location. Two days ago, it was suddenly down and completely unreachable. After having someone reboot it, it worked for about a day, then seemed to be down again. This time, however, it was different: -The server reacts to pings -It is scannable, and all the relevant ports are open But: -Open shells were immediately blocked, and no warning had been shown -It's not possible to open any connection - the TCP/IP handshake seems to have some problems: SSH handshake As this is a private server of a small community, we don't have the resources to pay a technician to fix the problem for us, so any hints how to fix the problem after the next reboot would be highly appreciated... • What are my options for a secure External File Share in Server 2008 R2?

  Hi, I have a Windows Server 2008 R2 machine installed on a home network with a number of files that need to be shared in a few different scenarios. I would like for all three scenarios to have a solution with some sort of encyption to protect the data during transfer. Scenario 1: I need to access files from my laptop (Mac OSX) or another computer outside of the network. This option seems like the easy one to answer in that I could use LogMeIn, the windows VPN, etc. to create such a connection. Scenario 2: I need to provide access to another user with minimal installation / configuration on his or her end. This makes me think of the new FTP 7.5 provided with Server 2008 R2 but i'm not sure of the details: Does it support SSH or some other form of encryption?, can an OSX user connect?, etc. My question here is what are my options? I really just don't know where to get started...

• Sync laptop and desktop solution/ideas?

  I have a laptop and a desktop I want to keep files up-to-date on both of them. I was thinking of creating a hard drive on 'server' and then changing "my documents" to that server path. It should work all right when there are two computers but what if a laptop uses wireless access at my house and more importantly, when it's connected wirelessly on a different IP range when I'm at college? For the second case, I guess, creating a VPN/remote server connection to the desktop will work, but if I want to make it automatic (my documents mapping), is there way to do that?

• Xubuntu 12.04: Slow Login

  I'm running Xubuntu 12.04, and after I ran the update, my login started slowing down big time. I've dabbled a little bit with the programs in Settings - Settings Manager - Session and Startup, and tried closing and opening these programs, and then rebooting. Anyways, I narrowed it down to a combination of 2 processes, "Network" (the connection manager) and "Xfce Volume Daemon". Their corresponding terminal commands are: ~$ nm-applet ~$ xfce4-volumed If I disable them, and then run them after login is complete, everything works just fine. Is there a way for me to run these commands automatically at start up? I want to maybe write a shell script and save it somewhere, or at least edit the order things happen after login, so the desktop can load before these processes. • What are the reasons why outlook looses configurations?

  Can't seem to establish any logic why outlook suddenly looses its profile coniguration settings intermittently. I work for an IT Contact Centre but it hurts when someone asks me why they loose their outlook profiles suddenly, and some most of the time. I know there are lots of reasons but I'm not sure which ones are the best. Could it be that the PC in a hurge corporate organization will not be connected to the network properly so the profile gets corrupted for outlook? But they don't usually shut down the PC after office hours due to the fact that its a 24 hours operations. On top of that, when users are migrated to Windows 7 / Office 2010 and then logs on to this pc, then opens outlook, then logs off then goes back to a Windows XP PC and opens outlook 2003 the profile is again lost. Again why is this? Is there anyone out there whose facing same connection/outlook profile issues getting lost for no apparent reason?

• SQL Server 2008 (64-bit)

  I have transaction log backup failures randomly. SQL Server Log says 'Memory constraints resulted reduced backup/restore buffer sizes. Proceding with 6 buffers of size 64KB.', and the SQL Server Agent Error Log has quite a few errors like 'Unable to start Job Manager thread for job xxx', '[298] SQLServer Error: 768, Client unable to establish connection [SQLSTATE 08001]', [298] SQLServer Error: 768, SSL Provider: Not enough memory is available to complete this request [SQLSTATE 08001]'. I am really low on the memory? It has total of 32 GB, but I set maximum to 20. Task manager shows it is using 99% of physical memory. Memoryclerk-sqlbufferpool has 32GB for the Virtual Memory Reserved, and 20 GB for the Virtual Memory Committed. From the perfmon, SQLServer:Memory Manager/Total ServerMemory shows 21GB of memory in use, that's what I set the maximum to. I don't where the rest of memory go. Can anyone advice? • Unable to use strong encryption

  So I am exploring Apache to create a simple example: the default page and a directory "secure". I everyone to be able to access the server but, when one wants to access the "secure" directory, I the connection to use strong encryption. I am using apache2.4. However this is not working and I don't know why! • Playbook is starting to get mail all of a sudden [closed]

  After 6 months my Playbook is just now this morning starting to pull in emails from my GMail account. Why? I didn't change anything on my end. The only difference I can think of (besides something changing on RIMs services end if that has any part in this) may be that I've been on a secure university connection for a few hours. I've been on this network before but the playbook doesn't seem to stay connected to it very long. Maybe it's because I have a lot of emails in my account? Has anyone else noticed this?

• Manually setting breakpoints in WinDBG

  I am trying to examine the assembly for an executable using WinDBG, but I am having a hard time getting to it. I want to set a breakpoint at the first instruction in my program, but when I try to do that manually (using the address of the module), WinDBG tells me that it is "unable to insert breakpoint" at that location due to an "Invalid access to memory location." I notice that when I create a breakpoint through the source code GUI, the address is not the same as the first part of my module (In my example: "Win32FileOpen", a simple program I wrote.) Is there a header of some sort that requires adding an offset to the address of my module? In another question, I saw the suggestion: "I would attempt to calculate the breakpoint address as: Module start + code start + code offset" but was unsure where to obtain those values. Can somebody please elaborate on this? The reason I don't just use the source GUI is that I want to be able to do this with a program that I may not have the source/symbols for. If there is an easier way to immediately start working with the executable I open, please let me know. • Unable to debug simple Java application in Eclipse. Cannot connect to VM. AGENT_ERROR_TRANSPORT_INIT(197)

  When i try to debug a simple application in Eclipse i receive a following error: Cannot connect to VM com.sun.jdi.connect.TransportTimeoutException And console provides me with a lonely string: FATAL ERROR in native method: JDWP No transports initialized, jvmtiError=AGENT_ERROR_TRANSPORT_INIT(197) I have JRE 1.6, JRE 1.7 and JDK 1.7 installed. Tried all of them. I've seen tons of same topics, but not a single answer helped me to solve my issue. Here they are: 1) Disable Firewall. Doesn't help. I have latest Avast ver. 9.0 at the moment. I'm a bit suspicious about that software, because before updating my Avast i was able to debug in Eclipse. I think it may cause this error, but i do not have direct clues :). I may ping my machine, firewall doesn't block Eclipse traffic, etc. 2) Add strings to hosts file. No reaction. ::1 localhost.localdomain localhost 127.0.0.1 localhost 3) Changing Network Settings in Java Control Panel to "Direct" connection. Doubtful advice. Also read that thing: http://wiki.eclipse.org/Debug/FAQ Can anyone help me to find out what is happening? Or guide me in the right direction?

• jQuery: How to check if a value exists in an array?

  Hello, I am trying to write a simple input field validation plugin at the moment (more of a learning exercise really) and thought this would not be too hard, seeing as all I should have to do is: Get input fields Store them in array with each one's value On submit of form check if array contains any empty strings But I seem to fail at writing something that checks for an empty string (read: input with no text inside) inside my array. • How do you pass a date value to BIRT report via querystring

  Hi, I have made a static html page (called start.jsp) containing a form where the user select 2 date ranges and this form has date pickers for those text boxes. When the user submits the form, it should take them to the BIRT report that I have designed. It SHOULD pass the 2 parameters that my report needs (start date and end date). Here is the querystring that gets appended to the URL birt-viewer/run__report=Business_Activity_Monitoring.rptdesign &FilterStartDate=2000-01-01&FilterEndDate=2009-01-01 I get an invalid date error: org.eclipse.birt.report.exception.ViewerValidationException: The parameter "FilterStartDate" is invalid. The value "06-08-2010" is invalid with the type "dateTime". How is it that if I remove the querystring completely, then BIRT will prompt me to enter the start date and end date (screenshot attached). I enter the exact same data that the form tries to send and it works!? This proves that my date string is correctly formatted but yet it will not accept them if they are sent to the BIRT report via the querystring? Seems like it has a problem with the fact that its a string in the first place. I have correctly set up these report parameters in my BIRT report. I have also tried changing them by specifying the "Format as" value to be a "custom" YYYY-MM-dd but this didnt work. Is it even possible to send date parameters to a birt report via querystring? Im guessing the solution will involve converting these strings to dates within the birt report's "script" tab. but I dont know how to access querystring variables from here or how to set report parameter variables. • What is Causing This Memory Leak in Delphi?

  I just can't figure out this memory leak that EurekaLog is reporting for my program. I'm using Delphi 2009. Here it is: Memory Leak: Type=Data; Total size=26; Count=1; The stack is: System.pas _UStrSetLength 17477 System.pas _UStrCat 17572 Process.pas InputGedcomFile 1145 That is all there is in the stack. EurekaLog is pointing me to the location where the memory that was not released was first allocated. According to it, the line in my program is line 1145 of InputGedcomFile. That line is: CurStruct0Key := 'HEAD' + Level0Key; where CurStruct0Key and Level0Key are simply defined in the procedure as local variables that should be dynamically handled by the Delphi memory manager when entering and leaving the procedure: var CurStruct0Key, Level0Key: string; So now I look at the _UStrCat procedure in the System Unit. Any help or explanation here will be much appreciated.

• LinkBuilder.BuildUrlFromExpression not working anymore in .Net 4 / VS 2010 ?

  Hi, I recently migrating my ASP.Net MVC 1 application from VS.Net 2008 / C# 3.5 to VS.NET 2010 / C# 4.0. I massively used a builder to get URL strings from the strongly typed calls. It looks like this : // sample call : string toSamplePage = Url.To<SampleController>(c => c.Page(parameter1, parameter2)); the code is added as an extension to the default UrlHelper : public static string To<Tcontroller>(UrlHelper helper, Expression<Action<Tcontroller>> action) where Tcontroller : Controller { // based on Microsoft.Web.Mvc.dll LinkBuilder return LinkBuilder.BuildUrlFromExpression<Tcontroller>(helper.RequestContext, helper.RouteCollection, action); } The only problem of this, is the reference to Microsoft.Web.Mvc dll, but the gain in readability was worth it. Problem : it does not work anymore, return (null) whatever the parameters. Questions : is there a better way now to build links from an expression ? (yes I tried to google it without success) is there a trick to have the former LinkBuilder.BuildUrlFromExpression works ? I tried to recompile it into C# 4.0, but the problem is that it implies working on my own compilated version of System.Web.Mvc which is not an option. I'm currently trying to migrate to MVC 2 but I still have issues... Waiting for your suggestions...

  Imagine a more complex CRUD application which has a three-tier-architecture and communicates over webservices. The client starts a conversation to the server and doing some wizard like stuff. To process the wizard the client needs feedback given by the server. We started a discussion about stateful or stateless webservices for this approach. I made some research combined with my own experience, which points me to the question mentioned later. Stateless webservices having the following properties (in our case): + high scalability + high availability + high speed + rapid testing - bloated contract - implementing more logic on server-side But we can cross out the first two points, our application doesn't needs high scalability and availability. So we come to the stateful webservice. I've read a bunch of blogs and forum posts and the most invented point implementing a stateful webservice was: + simplifies contract (protocol) - bad testing - runs counter to the basic architecture of http But doesn't almost all web applications have these bad points? Web applications uses cookies, query strings, session ids, and all the stuff to avoid the statelessness of http. So why is it that bad for webservices?

  I'm currently getting the AccessControlException below when I deploy to app engine (I don't see it when I run in my local environment). I'm using GAE 1.3.1, Spring 3.0.1, and Spring Security 3.0.2. • Add an array of buttons to a GridView in an Android application

  I have an application that will have 5-15 buttons depending on what is available from a backend. How do I define the proper GridView layout files to include an array of buttons that will each have different text and other attributes? Each button will essentially add an item to a cart, so the onClick code will be the same except for the item it adds to the cart. How can I define an array so I can add a variable number of buttons, but still reference each of them by a unique ID? I've seen examples of the arrays.xml, but they have created an array of strings that are pre-set. I need a way to create an object and not have the text defined in the layout or arrays xml file. Update - Added info about adding to a GridView I want to add this to a GridView, so calling the addView method results in an UnsupportedOperationException. I can do the following: ImageButton b2 = new ImageButton(getApplicationContext()); b2.setBackgroundResource(R.drawable.img_3); android.widget.LinearLayout container = (android.widget.LinearLayout) findViewById(R.id.lay); container.addView(b2); but that doesn't layout the buttons in a grid like I would like. Can this be done in a GridView?

I have already defined the stringlength attribute on the Model object using data annotations and it is validating the length of entered strings correctly. I do not want to repeat the same setting in my views by setting the max length attribute manually when the model already has the information. Is there any way to do this? It works great if I have limited functions say 90 Operation Contract in my IService but if add one more OperationContract than I'm unable to Update the Service reference nor i'm able to add that service reference. In this article it's mentioned that by changing those config files(i.e devenv.exe.config, WcfTestClient.exe.config and SvcUtil.exe.config) it will work but even including those bindings in those config files still that error pops up saying There was an error downloading 'http://10.0.3.112/MyService/Service1.svc/mex'. The request failed with HTTP status 400: Bad Request. Metadata contains a reference that cannot be resolved: 'http://10.0.3.112/MyService/Service1.svc/mex'. There is an error in XML document (1, 89549). The maximum nametable character count quota (16384) has been exceeded while reading XML data. The nametable is a data structure used to store strings encountered during XML processing - long XML documents with non-repeating element names, attribute names and attribute values may trigger this quota. This quota may be increased by changing the MaxNameTableCharCount property on the XmlDictionaryReaderQuotas object used when creating the XML reader. Line 1, position 89549. If the service is defined in the current solution, try building the solution and adding the service reference again. Any idea how to solve this????

• Fixing predicated NSFetchedResultsController/NSFetchRequest performance with SQLite backend?

  I have a series of NSFetchedResultsControllers powering some table views, and their performance on device was abysmal, on the order of seconds. Since it all runs on main thread, it's blocking my app at startup, which is not great. I investigated and turns out the predicate is the problem: NSPredicate *somePredicate = [NSPredicate predicateWithFormat:@"ANY somethings == %@", something]; [fetchRequest setPredicate:somePredicate]; I.e the fetch entity, call it "things", has a many-to-many relation with entity "something". This predicate is a filter that limits the results to only things that have a relation with a particular "something". When I removed the predicate for testing, fetch time (the initial performFetch: call) dropped (for some extreme cases) from 4 seconds to around 100ms or less, which is acceptable. I am troubled by this, though, as it negates a lot of the benefit I was hoping to gain with Core Data and NSFRC, which otherwise seems like a powerful tool. So, my question is, how can I optimize this performance? Am I using the predicate wrong? Should I modify the model/schema somehow? And what other ways there are to fix this? Is this kind of degraded performance to be expected? (There are on the order of hundreds of <1KB objects.) • Suppress Null Value Types from Being Emitted by XmlSerializer

  Please consider the following Amount value type property which is marked as a nullable XmlElement: [XmlElement(IsNullable=true)] public double? Amount { get ; set ; } When a nullable value type is set to null, the C# XmlSerializer result looks like the following: <amount xsi:nil="true" /> Rather than emitting this element, I would like the XmlSerializer to suppress the element completely. Why? We're using Authorize.NET for online payments and Authorize.NET rejects the request if this null element exists. The current solution/workaround is to not serialize the Amount value type property at all. Instead we have created a complementary property, SerializableAmount, which is based on Amount and is serialized instead. Since SerializableAmount is of type String, which like reference types are suppressed by the XmlSerializer if null by default, everything works great. /// <summary> /// Gets or sets the amount. /// </summary> [XmlIgnore] public double?
