  I'm using SQL Server 2005, VB.NET 2005. I want to be able to import a very large excel file into a SQL table called "XYZ" I've done this by doing the following: 1. Save the excel file as csv.(Using SaveAs XLCSV option) 2. Build a datatable "ABC" From CSV.(using ODBC Connection and Select * from '*'.csv command) 3. copy the datatable"ABC" into database table "xyz" (using sqlBulkCopy.WriteToServer()) It works fine without any error but when i checked my database i found that data type for some columns has been changed and hence it didn't copy some of the records.Any help would be appreciated

  I have a python datetime instance that was created using datetime.utcnow() and persisted in database. For display, I would like to convert the datetime instance reloaded from database to local datetime using the default local timezone (e.g. as if the datetime was create using datetime.now()) How can I convert the utc datetime to a local datetime using only python standard library (e.g. no pytz dependency)? It seems one solution would be to use datetime.astimezone( tz ), but how would do you get the default local timezone?

• Rails 2.3 - Storing sessions in different schema

  Hi - I want to config my app to use a different schema than the default for storing sessions. Basically, I want the app to store all its active_record objects in app_development and only its sessions in app_sessions. Normally this could be done by defining the sessions db in database.yml: development: # ... sessions: host: localhost database: app_sessions username: blah password: sssshhh #.... And then setting in the model: class Session < ActiveRecord::Base establish_connection :sessions #... end But since session doesn't have a model class defined, I'm looking for a way to tell it where to store its data. I've noticed the session comes from ActionController::Session, but couldn't find what I needed there. Any thoughts? thanks.

  I have a settings page in my asp.net website,in which a user can select desired items and their order to be displayed in another page.I am displaying these items(which are obtained from database) in a gridview with checkboxes,up/down arrows next to them.Once the user makes his selection/rearranges the items and clicks on the 'Save' button,I am saving the data into another database table.When this particular user logsin again I want to check the items which were already chosen by him and arrange them in the order he specified, on page load.I am able to check the checkboxes of the already chosen items but do not understand how do I arrange the items in the user specified order?   Is there a way getting all countries, states,cities zipcodes/ in one single database. I have been looking all over. I discovered geonames.org, which has I guess all of the content. But there is no way to fetch that data directly. I am using rails. If there any helpers or Plugins, it'd be great. It would be awesome if there is a complete resource in any parsable format which I can use to get this database in place. • Web hosting for multiple web sites providing system isolation

  We have a small number of projects where we expect the client will not be maintaining the installed versions of applications we install to power the site (such as Drupal). Given that an important part of security is keeping things updated, we don't want to host these projects on our Plesk-powered dedicated servers that currently host lots of our other client's websites. Our goal is to find a host where we can deploy isolated instances (be these slices, virtual servers, grid servers, etc) for each individual (or groups of 2-3) web sites as we need them. These instances would be completely separate, so that if one web site were hacked it would not impact any other site. Typical hosting requirements: Linux Apache PHP 5 MySQL Supports Drupal Ability to setup a cron task (but we don't need SSH access) Daily backups Virtualized/cloud hosting (we want to avoid shared) Pricing per site is around $25/month OS is patched automatically Some options we have considered but won't work: MediaTemple: Two major data center-wide security incidents and recent downtime foster doubt about this host's technical ability. Slicehost: This would require us to manage the entire server, which we don't want to do. Rackspace Cloud Sites (formerly Mosso): No backup options. Do you have any recommended hosting options for given these requirements?

• Sporadic crash of master-slave MySQL replication process

  Hello, I was wondering if someone has experienced this and can perhaps provide some insight into this issue. We have a plan-vanilla MySQL master-slave replication set up. The tables are MyISAM and the master can get quite read/write active. We use the slave instance to perform full daily backups in order to avoid bringing down the master server. The backup process does the following: STOP SLAVE SQL_THREAD mysqlhotcopy all tables START SLAVE SQL_THREAD Every once in a while (once a month or so) the replication breaks with varying error messages indicating a corrupt query or log file.   I am using Linq to query my database and returning a generic IList. Whatever I tried I couldn't convert an IQueryable to an IList. Here is my code. • How do you handle data archiving?

  Backups are one thing, but long term archival is another. For example, you might be required to store emails for 7 years, or keep all project data indefinitely. I used to save archives to tape, but then I've had tapes get destroyed (drives rip the tape out). So...write to 2 tapes I hear you say. Is that what others do? Have 2 (or more) tapes of the same data for redundancy? But then the other issue is that tapes cannot usually be read by different backup software vendors. Eg if you go from Arcserve - Backup Exec - Commvault over 10 years you would need to keep all 3 systems so that you could restore old data. Likewise for hardware. Old tapes might not be barcoded. Might not be compatible with the new library etc etc. So do you keep old tape hardware AND old software just in case you might need to restore a 10 year-old file? Or...when you move to a new backup system do you migrate all archived data to the new system and re-archive it onto new tapes? That could be a huge job. Any thoughts?

I've added some features to the application and in the process I had to add a new field to one of the database tables. • How can I have puppet deploy ssh keys for virtual users?

  I am trying to get puppet to assign authorized ssh keys for virtual users but I keep getting the following error: err: Could not retrieve catalog: Could not parse for environment production: Syntax error at 'user'; expected '}' at /etc/puppet/modules/users/manifests/ssh_authorized_keys.pp:9 I believe my configuration are correct (listed below) but is there a syntax error or scoping issue I am missing? I would simply like to assign users to nodes and have those users automagically have their ssh keys installed.   We have oracle running on Solaris, and the shell is by default CSH. So the login script set the oracle_home,oracle_sid in csh also. But I don't like csh and want to use bash to do my work. So how to source the csh login script in bash? e.g, the following is what in the .cshrc file. And when use bash, I'd like use these variables. One way is to copy the variables again and use bash command, such as export ORACLE_SID=TEST. But doing so will let us to maintain two copy of the files. And when we change the database name, or upgrade the database, I need to maintian the bash login file seperately. • Ruby on Rails Foreigner plugin not working for SQL Server

  Well, now that I've finally got my stupid ODBC stuff configured, I took a schema.rb file that I dumped from a Postgres database and did a db:schema:load on it in a Rails project configured for SQL Server. Well, it sets up all the schema in the SQL Server database except for a minor detail: No foreign keys are created. The rake command doesn't show any errors and does say it is adding foreign keys. But they don't actually get added. This is the last bit from the command: -- add_foreign_key("workhistoryform", "form", {:name=>"workhistoryform_form_rid_fkey", :column=>"form_rid", :primary_key=>"form_rid"}) -> 0.0002s -- initialize_schema_migrations_table() -> 0.0092s -- assume_migrated_upto_version(0) -> 0.0942s [earlz@earlzarch avp_msql_migrations]$ So what is the problem? Does the Foreigner plugin not work in SQL Server? If it didn't I'd expect to see an error or something...

  Hello I have a web application, which is using a SQL Server 2005 database. My problem is, that the application has no role management. So the application always accesses the database with one default user. But now I have to save and access a value only for the current user. Is there any way to do this? Maybe something like a session on the web server? The best way would be, if there is any possibility to access the current session id of the web server from T-SQL. Do anyone understand my problem? :) Torben

• Troubleshooting source of heavy resource-usage on a server 2008 running multiple sites

  Hi, I am running about 10 asp.net websites on a hosted virtual server. The server runs Server 2008 - each website is backed by its own database running on SQL server 2008 on the same box. Lately the box has seemed really slow. The only kind of discovery i could think of doing was looking in the task manager, where i can see w3wp and sqlserver.exe jumping to 40% cpu usage every 5-10 seconds. What are the steps i can take to determine which of my websites is taking these resources and or what database is getting hit the most? I have of course ssms installed on the machine as well. As you can tell, my sysadmin skills are very very limited - any help would be much appreciated.

• How to determine the maximum integer the model can handle?

  "What is the biggest integer the model field that this application instance can handle?" We have sys.maxint, but I'm looking for the database+model instance. We have the IntegerField, the SmallIntegerField, the PositiveSmallIntegerField, and a couple of others beside. They could all vary between each other and each database type. I found the "IntegerRangeField" custom field example here on stackoverflow. Might have to use that, and guess the lowest common denominator? Or rethink the design I suppose. Is there an easy way to work out the biggest integer an IntegerField, or its variants, can cope with?

  Hello, I am working on an Excel application that queries a SQL database. The queries can take a long time to run (20-40 min). If I've miss-coded something it can take a long time to error or reach a break point. I can save the results to a sheet fine, it's when I am working with the record sets that things can blow up. Is there a way to load the data into a ADODB.Recordset when I'm debugging to skip querying the database (after the first time)? • LLBLGenProDataSource : cannot see updates values of newly inserted item from a FormView

  After performing a FormView.InsertItem, I am unable to read the new values from the bound object within the LLBLGenProDataSource that the FormView is bound to. I have tracing turned on, I can see the insert happen, and the data does make it into the database, yet when I examine the contents of LLBLGenProDataSource.EntityCollection(0) (there is only one item in the collection) I do not see the values from the FormView.....yet, they are somehow being inserted into the database. • Timed email reminder in python

  I have written up a python script that allows a user to input a message, his email and the time and they would like the email sent. This is all stored in a mysql database. However, how do I get the script to execute on the said time and date? will it require a cron job? I mean say at 2:15 on april 20th, the script will search the database for all times of 2:15, and send out those emails. But what about for emails at 2:16? • Are ORM's counterproductive to OO design?

  In OOD, design of an object is said to be characterized by its identity and behavior. Having used OR/M's in the past, the primary purpose, in my opinion, revolves around the ability to store/retrieve data. That is to say, OR/M objects are not design by behavior, but rather data (i.e. database tables). Case and point: Many OR/M tools come with a point-to-a-database-table-and-click-object-generator. If objects are no longer characterized by behavior this will, in my opinion, muddy the identity and responsibility of the objects. Subsequently, if objects are not defined by a responsibility this could lend a hand to having tightly coupled classes and overall poor design. Furthermore, I would think that in an application setting, you would be heading towards scalability issues. So, my question is, do you think that ORM's are counterproductive to OO design? Perhaps the underlying question would be whether or not they are counterproductive to application development.

• Handling update errors in multiple records in the TClientDataset's ReconcileError method

  I'm trying to use the ReconcileError event to allow the user to correct the data after an update error which occurred in a specific record among others. Example: I have a dataset with one field and 3 records, this field have a unique constraint on the database, then I change one value to conflict when it reaches the database, then I call ApplyUpdates on the Dataset. This will generate an error (violation of unique constraint) in the provider and abort the applyupdates process, returning raAbort in the Action var of the ReconcileError method. In the ReconcileError method I tryied to use: Action := HandleReconcileError(aDataSet, UpdateKind, E); ** EDIT ** After debugging and dumping the DataSet records which were returned from the server, I noticed that there are 2 records in this Dataset, the first is the Old record and the second have all the changes I made to the first record. I'm a bit confused, will I always get this DataSet with 2 records? I thought that it should have only one record with the Old/New values. Thanks.

That is, first they send you a program to run to grab your HWID, you tell them your HWID, they store it in a database, then they send you the actual program. If your HWID isn't in the database, the program won't run. So what is Hardware-ID, and how is it generated? Why is it that my HWID is different depending on the programmer that sends me a HWID-grabber?
