  • Sharepoint 2010 as framework for website?

    So I'm looking at several solutions for our new website. And we've looked at ExpressionEngine first and foremost. Now, during brainstorming today, one person said "why don't we use Sharepoint 2010 to build the site on?", and it doesn't seem like a horrible idea. I mean, we're based around Office anyway. We use Lync and have an intranet based on Sharepoint 2010 anyway. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Would it cost more to develop an internet webpage on Sharepoint 2010 opposed to using ExpressionEngine?

    Impressed by a cool feature I didn't know about. If you have some JavaBean, like my Event class below, you can right-click it and choose "BeanInfo Editor": Now, as you can see above, I don't have a BeanInfo class. So I am now asked whether the IDE should create one for me. So I say OK and then I have a new BeanInfo class, generated from my Event class, as well as a multiview editor for visually editing the BeanInfo class: Thanks Eric and Nicklas from Artificial Solutions in Stockholm for pointing this out to me today. It comes in very handy in NetBeans Platform applications when you're working with a BeanNode and want to customize the display of your properties.

  • Recommended 2D Game Engine for prototyping

    What high-level game engine would you recommend to develop a 2D game prototype on windows? (or mac/linux if you wish) The kind of things I mean by "high-level" includes (but is definitely not limited to): not having to manage low-level stuff like screen buffers, graphics contexts having an API to draw geometric shapes well, I was going to omit it but I guess being based on an actual "high-level" language is a plus (automatic resource management and the existence a reasonable set of data structures in the standard library come to mind). It seems to me that Flash is the proverbial elephant in the room for this query but I'd very much like to see different answers based on all kinds of languages or SDKs.

    I'm designing an entity-component engine in C# right now, and all components need to have access to the global event manager, which sends off inter-entity events (every entity also has a local event manager). I'd like to be able to simply call functions like this: GlobalEventManager.Publish("Foo", new EventData()); GlobalEventManager.Subscribe("Bar", OnBarEvent); without having to do this: class HealthComponent { private EventManager globalEventManager; public HealthComponent(EventManager gEM) { globalEventManager = gEM; } } // later on... EventManager globalEventManager = new EventManager(); Entity playerEntity = new Entity(); playerEntity.AddComponent(new HealthComponent(globalEventManager)); How can I accomplish this? EDIT: I solved it by creating a singleton called GlobalEventManager. It derives from the local EventManager class and I use it like this: GlobalEventManager.Instance.Publish("Foo", new EventData());

    I am going to write a bachelor's science work on caching strategies and really, can't find any links to specifications or full descriptions of some of them. Only something like summaries from wikipedia. Please, help with some links on LRU, MRU caching and new-one - Clock Pro. Thanks a lot. All links are very useful for me. The purpose of work - is to compare different cache strategies to get more effiency. It based on WebApplication with ejb 2.0, so algorithm's will be implemented there, espesially in ejbLoad() and ejbFindByPrimarKey(). Also, one of aspects of this application - it will use not common scheme of tables in database - it based on metamodel. So, if you had any experience on this topic, i would be grateful to take some of your knowledge)

  • Colour scheme for editor - guidelines or medical reccomendations

    Is anyone aware of any studies on what colour scheme is best for use in multi-coloured text based computer work? Specifically in terms of reducing eye strain. For instance is a black back ground and light text best? Should it be a dark colour rather than going all the way to black? I've seen the questions on this site about "which is your favourite" that is not what I am after. I also aware that my question may be to specific asking for a colour scheme, if anyone could link me to some guidelines instead that would be appreciated as well. I'm concious of the fact that anyone using a computer is really using it for text based work but with the multitude of colours used to convey information within our modern IDEs I feel this is a good StackExchange site for this question.

    Hi, I presented a talk on Windows Phone 7 @ MoMo and got awesome response, even though WP7 is quite new still. I also demoed 2 applications on both emulator and the actual device. It enjoy the look on audience faces when they see the app actually work on actual device. I see a great opportunity on WP7 and everyone I met agrees on the fact the WP7 has a very bright future ahead. The Ecosystem which WP7 has (developing/ debugging tools, emulator, almost flat learning curve,  office/sharepoint integration a lively forum, marketplace) makes it a major player in mobile, already.   • Navigation in a #WP7 application with MVVM Light

    In MVVM applications, it can be a bit of a challenge to send instructions to the view (for example a page) from a viewmodel. Thankfully, we have good tools at our disposal to help with that. In his excellent series “MVVM Light Toolkit soup to nuts”, Jesse Liberty proposes one approach using the MVVM Light messaging infrastructure. While this works fine, I would like to show here another approach using what I call a “view service”, i.e. an abstracted service that is invoked from the viewmodel, and implemented on the view. Multiple kinds of view services In fact, I use view services quite often, and even started standardizing them for the Windows Phone 7 applications I work on. If there is interest, I will be happy to show other such view services, for example Animation services, responsible to start/stop animations on the view. Dialog service, in charge of displaying messages to the user and gathering feedback. Navigation service, in charge of navigating to a given page directly from the viewmodel. In this article, I will concentrate on the navigation service. The INavigationService interface In most WP7 apps, the navigation service is used in quite a straightforward way. We want to: Navigate to a given URI. Go back. Be notified when a navigation is taking place, and be able to cancel. The INavigationService interface is quite simple indeed: public interface INavigationService { event NavigatingCancelEventHandler Navigating; void NavigateTo(Uri pageUri); void GoBack(); } Obviously, this interface can be extended if necessary, but in most of the apps I worked on, I found that this covers my needs. The NavigationService class It is possible to nicely pack the navigation service into its own class. To do this, we need to remember that all the PhoneApplicationPage instances use the same instance of the navigation service, exposed through their NavigationService property. In fact, in a WP7 application, it is the main frame (RootFrame, of type PhoneApplicationFrame) that is responsible for this task. So, our implementation of the NavigationService class can leverage this. First the class will grab the PhoneApplicationFrame and store a reference to it. Also, it registers a handler for the Navigating event, and forwards the event to the listening viewmodels (if any). Then, the NavigateTo and the GoBack methods are implemented. They are quite simple, because they are in fact just a gateway to the PhoneApplicationFrame. The whole class is as follows: public class NavigationService : INavigationService { private PhoneApplicationFrame _mainFrame; public event NavigatingCancelEventHandler Navigating; public void NavigateTo(Uri pageUri) { if (EnsureMainFrame()) { _mainFrame.Navigate(pageUri); } } public void GoBack() { if (EnsureMainFrame() && _mainFrame.CanGoBack) { _mainFrame.GoBack(); } } private bool EnsureMainFrame() { if (_mainFrame != null) { return true; } _mainFrame = Application.Current.RootVisual as PhoneApplicationFrame; if (_mainFrame != null) { // Could be null if the app runs inside a design tool _mainFrame.Navigating += (s, e) => { if (Navigating != null) { Navigating(s, e); } }; return true; } return false; } } Exposing URIs I find that it is a good practice to expose each page’s URI as a constant. In MVVM Light applications, a good place to do that is the ViewModelLocator, which already acts like a central point of setup for the views and their viewmodels. Note that in some cases, it is necessary to expose the URL as a string, for instance when a query string needs to be passed to the view. So for example we could have: public static readonly Uri MainPageUri = new Uri("/MainPage.xaml", UriKind.Relative); public const string AnotherPageUrl = "/AnotherPage.xaml?param1={0}&param2={1}"; Creating and using the NavigationService Normally, we only need one instance of the NavigationService class. In cases where you use an IOC container, it is easy to simply register a singleton instance. For example, I am using a modified version of a super simple IOC container, and so I can register the navigation service as follows: SimpleIoc.Register<INavigationService, NavigationService>(); Then, it can be resolved where needed with: SimpleIoc.Resolve<INavigationService>(); Or (more frequently), I simply declare a parameter on the viewmodel constructor of type INavigationService and let the IOC container do its magic and inject the instance of the NavigationService when the viewmodel is created. On supported platforms (for example Silverlight 4), it is also possible to use MEF. Or, of course, we can simply instantiate the NavigationService in the ViewModelLocator, and pass this instance as a parameter of the viewmodels’ constructor, injected as a property, etc… Once the instance has been passed to the viewmodel, it can be used, for example with: NavigationService.NavigateTo(ViewModelLocator.ComparisonPageUri); Testing Thanks to the INavigationService interface, navigation can be mocked and tested when the viewmodel is put under unit test. Simply implement and inject a mock class, and assert that the methods are called as they should by the viewmodel. Conclusion As usual, there are multiple ways to code a solution answering your needs. I find that view services are a really neat way to delegate view-specific responsibilities such as animation, dialogs and of course navigation to other classes through an abstracted interface. In some cases, such as the NavigationService class exposed here, it is even possible to standardize the implementation and pack it in a class library for reuse. I hope that this sample is useful!   • Keypress Left is called twice in Update when key is pressed only once

    I have a piece of code that is changing the position of player when left key is pressed. It is inside of Update() function. I know, Update is called multiple times, but since I have an ifstatement to check if left arrow is pressed, it should update only once. I have tested using print statement that once pressed, it gets called twice. Problem: Position updated twice when key is pressed only once. Below given is the structure of my code: void Update() { if (Input.GetKeyDown (KeyCode.LeftArrow)) { print ("PRESSEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEDDDDDDDDDDDDDD"); } } I looked up on web and what was suggested id this: if (Event.current.type == EventType.KeyDown && Event.current.keyCode == KeyCode.LeftArrow) { print("pressed"); } But, It gives me an error that says: Object reference not set to instance of an object How can I fix this?

  • What workflow engines are companies using and would you use it again? [on hold]

    I've been asked to find out "what's out there" when it comes to workflow engines. We have projects where a workflow based development environment makes sense. I've looked a little into jBPM but it seemed to have a steep learning curve. Google seems to take me to commercial products or products that I think are open source but instead have very limited "community editions". I could simply be searching for the wrong terms. What I would like to know are what actual workflow based products have you used at your company and to what degree of success or failure was it? Would you use it again? Thanks.

    As the title states, I'm thinking of making a simple-card-game based website, using persistent connection technology (Something like signalR) for the actual game part of it. I've never planned a site to use this technology, and wondering for those who have, are there any additional things that need to be taken into consideration for the site structure? I'm planning on using the asp MVC framework for the whole thing, and starting off with some simple game (e.g. card based Rock/Paper/Scissors) for proof of concept (to see if I can get it working how I think it would in my head).
