• Vertex 2 SSD is running faster than my Vertex 3 SSD?

  I used Acronis Disk Director to do a direct clone of my C:\ windows 7 x64 drive from my Vertex 2 to my new Vertex 3 SSD (Just to show the drive software winstall everything is identical.) I ran a performance test on Windows using the Windows Experience Index. The rating I am receiving when booting on the Vertex 2 is 7.5 While I am getting only a rating for the Vertex 3 of 6.9 My understanding is that the read/write speeds of the Vertex 2 is only up to 250MB/sec while the Vertex 3 is up to 500MB/sec. Copying a single file (3GB in size) from the Vertex 3 to itself was getting speed of approx 70-80MB/sec This speed is no better (maybe worse) than what I got from the Vertex 2 I am connected via the SATA 3 port on the motherboard, using an SATA 3 cable Is this issue caused by the drive cloning? Do I have a bad SSD?

• Can single ESXi host make use of two separete iSCSI box?

  Hi! I have problem with using multiply iSCSI targets with single ESXi host (in my case they are two FreeNAS hosts, but I suspect that this problem will occur with any two iSCSI box of that same type/model). If I configure two FreeNAS hosts as iSCSI targets (say iSCSI A and iSCSI B), then I can use both of them with my ESXi host, but only one at a time (i.e only iSCSI A or only iSCSI B, but not both of them simultaneously). If I try to add second iSCSI target to my iSCSI adapter (of course it has unique iqn name), then in a details pane of this adapter (it is iSCSI software adapter), I see that total number of paths has increased accordingly, but not total number of devices (so I can't use it as another storage). What should I do? It is impossible to attach two iSCSI targets to single adapter? I'm using free version of ESXi 4.1. Maybe it is an limitation of free version? Thanks in advance for any sugestion.

• Memory Stick Controller is not compatible with this version of Windows.

  I'm getting this error message in the Action Center on Windows 7, and I can't seem to solve it through Windows or through searches on Google: RICOH R5C592 PCI-CardBus/IEEE-1394/SD Card/Memory Stick Controller is not compatible with this version of Windows. Thanks for any help PS. I wasn't sure if you're allowed to post questions like this, about proprietary software, but I checked the FAQ and it seemed ok. Response: The URL I am told to visit it this but I can't tell which I should choose that I am originally presented with, or what to put in to select, as I am not sure what input it is referring to.

• Do i need a dedicated server for load balancing?

  I'm completely new to the concept of load balancing so i hope this question isn't a "stupid question" because i've been searching around and im having a hard time understanding this. So to my understanding, in order to load balance, i need a separate machine with an ip address i can direct all traffic to. I initially thought i needed to rent 3 dedicated servers, one for load balancing and the other two as backend servers. Would a dedicated server be too much for a load balancer or do hosting companies have special types of computers for that process? Then i read somewhere else that i can install a load balance software in both of the two servers and configure it in a way that doesn't require me to rent another machine/dedicated server for load balancing. So im a bit confuse on how to actually implement a load balancer and whether or not i need a dedicated server for the sole purpose of acting as a load balancing machine. Also, i was recommended to use HAproxy so i'll be heading that direction for load balancing.

• Unable to uninstall SQL Server express

  When I try, I receive the following error message: A computer restart is required. You must restart this computer before installing SQL Server. Of course, I have restarted the computer :-) I'm not really sure how to proceed. The version that sql server reports when I query it is: SQL Server 10.0.1600.22 - RTM (Express Edition with Advanced ) Solved: As it turns out, I had to end up uninstalling logitech's quick cam pro software. Although the fix below did not directly resolve it, the value of that registry key led me to discovering the solution by querying for it online :-) thanks!!!

• Bluetooth device won't re-add after being removed (Windows 7)

  I've got a SBH52 headset, it works fine on my android phone, then I tried to use it with my Windows 7 PC, then it won't work because Microsoft Windows dosen't have native support for A2DP connections and one of the answers on the previous link said that removing the device from "devices and printers", running this software and then re-add the device would solve the problem. But the big problem is that they won't pair again: I tried, hopelessly, the suggested fixes from Windows, it won't work. By the way, it is Windows 7 (x64), it just looks like Windows 8. I had this problem once many years ago with other PC and Bluetooth device, I remember it had something to do with drivers that were not removed and I tried to delete them from somewhere, and as far as I remember it worked, but no idea how. In short, how can I pair it again with my PC?

• Start script on network connect

  I am trying to get a GNU/Linux Bash script to run as soon as a network connection is established on my Raspberry Pi. I tried following the instructions on several pages: I have tried adding my script to /etc/network/if-up.d and running sudo chmod ugo+x on the file. I have tried adding the line post-up <path/to/script.sh> to /etc/network/interfaces I am really quite clueless here. • How Can I Automate the Backup of a Quickbooks Server?

  I have three computers: The first is the company file server which has the Quick Books company file, is always on, and lives in the closet. The other two are Quick Books Clients. All are XP Pro. I need a way to automatically backup the QB data file, without any user intervention. Quick Books has a built in scheduled backup utility, but from what I've read, it only works when the software is running in single user mode. (and obviously putting the server into single user mode defeats the concept of having a server). Also, I'm not actually running QB itself on the server, just the "QB Database Server" process that sits in the system tray. Surely there must be a way to automate this? I'm open to any ideas/suggestions. Thanks!

• Viewing CHM Files Across The Network in Windows 7

  When I try to open .chm help from a network shared drive I receive the following error: Navigation to the webpage was canceled. I know about the .reg solution described on KB896054 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\HTMLHelp\1.x\ItssRestrictions] "MaxAllowedZone"=dword:00000001 but it does not work in Windows 7. Any ideas how to make .chm help available from the network drives? Edit: I have the network path mapped to P: drive letter. My program runs from P: and I want to see the help for it. Copying the program to local drive is not a solution for me.

  I want to run my own root server (directly accessible from the web without a hardware firewall) with debian lenny, apache2, php5, mysql, postfix MTA, sftp (based on ssh) and maybe dns server. What measures/software would you recomend, and why, to secure this server down and minimalize the attack vector? Webapplications aside ... This is what I have so far: iptables (for gen. packet filtering) fail2ban (brute force attack defense) ssh (chang default, port disable root access) modsecurity - is really clumsy and a pain (any alternative here?) ?Sudo why should I use it? what is the advantage to normal user handling thinking about greensql for mysql www.greensql.net is tripwire worth looking at? snort? What am I missing? What is hot and what is not? Best practices? I like "KISS" - Keep it simple secure, I know it would be nice! Thanks in advance ...

• Backup strategy for Windows Server 2008 R2 and Hyper-V

  I am in the process of planning a Hyper-V deployment with SCVMM 2008 R2. I have several VMs on VMWare Player (temporary solution) for stuff like Sharepoint 2007, 2010, and a couple of other server apps. I want to develop a resilient backup plan for this. On the software side, Data Protection Manager 2010 will support all of the server apps I run (sQL Server 2008 R2, Sharepoint, Exchange, etc). But on the hardware side (storage), what is the best way to go? Drobo seems to have issues with Hyper-V juding by a few threads on here and doesn't support DPM 2010 (which is in beta anyway) but not even the 2007 version (see http://www.drobo.com/support/best_practices.php). What storage device would work well? Do I need a home server or just an external usb drive? Capacity wise, 2tb will probably be best so I can have a small archive and implement a round-robin system. • Time management and self improvement

  I hope I can open a discussion on this topic as this is not a specific problem. It's a topic I hope to get some ideas on how people in similar situation as mine manage their time. OK, I'm a single developer on a software project for the last 6-8 months. The project I'm working on uses several technologies, mainly .net stuff: WPF, WF, NHibernate, WCF, MySql and other third party SDKs relevant for the project nature. My experience and knowledge vary, for example I have a lot of experience in WPF but much less in WCF. I work full time on the project and im curios on how other programmers which need to multi task in many areas manage their time. I'm a very applied type of person and prefer to code instead of doing research. I feel that doing research "might" slow down the progress of the project while I recognize that research and learning more in areas which I'm not so strong will ultimately make me more productive. How would you split up your daily time in productive coding time and time to and experiment, read blogs, go through tutorials etc. I would say that Im coding about 90%+ of my day and devoting some but very little time in research and acquiring new knowledge. Thanks for your replies. I think I will adopt a gradual transition to Dominics block parts. I kinda knew that coding was taking up way to much of my time but it feels good having a first version of the project completed and ready. With a few months of focused hard work behind me I hope to get more time to experiment and expand my knowlegde. Now I only hope my boss will cut me some slack and stop pressuring me for features...

• How to fix corrupted filesystem (shows as RAW) in USB device?

  I would like to ask if you know how to fix a corrupted USB? I've tried the diskpart command but it didn't work. The media is write protected. Do you have any idea that is much better? I need to fix it because I have important files in my flash drive. I really need to retrieve it. I saw that the file system is seen as RAW and is unaccessible. I tried error checking, but it requires you to format it. I tried data recovery software but all files come out corrupted. My USB is Imation 4GB. Any suggestions?

• Are there netcat-like tools for Windows which are not quarantined as malware?

  I used to use netcat for Windows to help track down network connectivity issues. However these days my anti-virus software (Symantec - but I understand others display similar behaviour) quarantines netcat.exe as malware. Are there any alternative applications which provide at least the following functionality: can connect to an open TCP socket and send data to it which is typed on the console can open and listen on a TCP socket and print received data to the console ? I don't need the 'advanced' features (which are possibly the reason for the quarantining) such as port scanning or remote execution.

• Windows 2008 Group Policy Setting? - Migration Headache

  I have a small domain of users that I just migrated from a linux domain running open-ldap. Our new servers are running Windows 2008 Standard. I've installed Active Directory and everything is working perfectly... except that the initial user privileges is pretty restrictive and I need to loosen it up a bit. For example once they login to their workstations, they can create new files and folders but can not modify existing files or start. I basically want to open it all up except for software installations. Can someone please help with with this migration headache?

• Bulk Email Verification Tool

  I'm looking for a bulk email validation tool to parse a list of 60K email addresses. Our company sends out 8 Million email newsletters a month via our mailing list software - MDAEMON. MDAEMON ships with a bad email address validator but I'm not quite comfortable with its results as it captures returned email addresses with SMTP errors of 500 and above. (We want to keep emails that return a Full Mailbox error or bounce backs that see us as SPAM) To further prune the list, we use Advanced Email Verifier. But I tested a random sample of this list and found a couple emails to be valid. Since our company relies heavily on traffic from our newsletters, I am wondering what other Windows-based bulk email verifier tools are out there?

• Print server not being recognized after switching router and upgrading to 64 bit

  I recently upgraded Windows 7 from 32 bit to 64 bit. I also switched my router from a very old model of Netgear to TP-Link. Before these updates, I had been using a USB print server by IOGear. After the updates, I took care to reinstall the drivers for both the print server and the printer, and picked the option to install a printer via TCP/IP, but no matter what I did, the driver software couldn't locate the print server on my network. I hit refresh, restarted my machine, turned off the firewalls and tried again. Still nothing. I'm at my wit's end. What else is left to try? Edit: More info. The print server is connected to the router via LAN line. The computer is connected to the router with a wireless connection.

Beyond just the pure scientific geek awesomeness, these instruments have the potential to collect more data than you can (or possibly should) store. Actually, this problem has a lot in common with a BI system. There's so much granular detail available in the source systems that a designer has to decide how, and how much, to roll up the data. Whenver you do that, you lose fidelity, but in many cases that's OK. Take, for example, your car's speedometer. You don't actually need to track each and every point of speed as it happens. You only need to know that you're hovering around the speed limit at a certain point in time. Since this is the way that humans percieve data, is there some lesson we should take in the design of data "flows" - and what implications does this have for new technologies like StreamInsight?     In his video on the questionable value of some business best practices, Frank Buytendijk mentions a recent HBR article by business guru C.K. Prahalad. I just learned that Prahalad passed away this past weekend at the age of 68. (Information Week obit) A couple of years ago I had the good fortune to attend Mr. Prahalad’s keynote address at a Gartner event.  He had an audience of software architects absolutely mesmerized as he discussed technology’s role in the changing nature of business competition.  The often dysfunctional relationship between IT and business has and will probably always be hot-button issue. But during Prahalad’s keynote,  there was a palpable sense that the largely technical audience was having some kind of breakthrough, that they had achieved a new level of understanding about the importance of the relationship between the two camps. Fortunately, Prahalad leaves behind a significant body of work that will remain a valuable resource as business and the technology that supports it continues to evolve.   My local machine is running Windows 7, which supports the latest released version of the SMB protocol (SMB 2.1). I also have a remote host, and I don't know what operating system or SMB-support software is installed on that remote host; I only know that the remote host supports some version of the SMB protocol. How can I find out, from the command prompt (or PowerShell) of my Windows 7 machine, what version of SMB is supported by that remote host? Edit: although I mention Windows 7 above, I'm sure that this question is relevant to many system/network administrators or desktop support personnel, hence why I'm posting the question here instead of at superuser.com.

• Is is possible to change MAC address of a WiMAX USB adapter?

  Wondering if it is possible to change the MAC address of a WiMAX USB adapter (read WiMAX, not Wi-Fi) manufactured by Motorola, ZTE, Intel etc. I've tried a few tools that did changed the MAC address of the adapter to another valid MAC address (that I coped from another equipment made by same company) but then I was not able to connect to the network, the connection software took long time stating "obtaining IP address"; then few seconds after it got one said "lost IP address". Wondering if changing MAC address of such devices actually work.
