  (Using VS 2010 Beta 2 - .Net 4.0 B2 Rel) I have a class, MyTable, derived from BindingList where S is a struct. S is made up of several other structs, for example: public class MyTable<S>:BindingList<S> where S: struct { ... } public struct MyStruct { public MyReal r1; public MyReal r2; public MyReal R1 {get{...} set{...}} public MyReal R2 {get{...} set{...}} ... } public struct MyReal { private Double d; private void InitFromString(string) {this.d = ...;} public MyReal(Double d) { this.d = d;} public MyReal(string val) { this.d = default(Double); InitFromString(val);} public override string ToString() { return this.real.ToString();} public static explicit operator MyReal(string s) { return new MyReal(s);} public static implicit operator String(MyReal r) { return r.ToString();} ... } OK, I use the MyTable as a binding source for a DataGridView. I can load the data grid easily using InitFromString on individual fields in MyStruct. The problem comes when I try to edit a value in a cell of the DataGridView. Going to the first row, first column, I change the value of the existing number. It gives an exception blizzard, the first line of which says: System.FormatException: Invalid cast from 'System.String' to 'MyReal' I've looked at the casting discussions and reference books but don't see any obvious problems. Any ideas?

• Socket errors of 10048 on the client? Possible causes?

  Hello, I'm writing a custom TCP server and client and on doing a ton of requests (60,000 to be exact) I begin to get this socket error of 10048, which should mean "the address is already in use." The error keeps happening unless I pause the process for like 2 or 3 minutes and then begin it again, and then it begins to bring up the same error a short while after restarting it. If I pause the client process and restart the server process, I still get the same error on the client. So it is a complete client side problem. This does not make sense though, this error only usually occurs when binding and this error happens on the client and not the server. What could be the possible reasons for it? A small excerpt of my initialization: TcpClient client = new TcpClient(); client.Connect("XXXXX -- some ip", 25000); client.NoDelay = true; NetworkStream clientStream = client.GetStream(); Also, everything else seems to be working fine(including the amount of time it takes to send back and forth) and this works perfectly when using 127.0.0.1 but when putting it on another LAN computer I begin to get the 10048 error. Is there something wrong with how I initialize it? What else could cause this error on the client side?

• How to save a large nhibernate collection without causing OutOfMemoryException

  How do I save a large collection with NHibernate which has elements that surpass the amount of memory allowed for the process? I am trying to save a Video object with nhibernate which has a large number of Screenshots (see below for code). Each Screenshot contains a byte[], so after nhibernate tries to save 10,000 or so records at once, an OutOfMemoryException is thrown. Normally I would try to break up the save and flush the session after every 500 or so records, but in this case, I need to save the collection because it automatically saves the SortOrder and VideoId for me (without the Screenshot having to know that it was a part of a Video). What is the best approach given my situation? Is there a way to break up this save without forcing the Screenshot to have knowledge of its parent Video? • TabHost / TabWidget - Scale Background Image ?

  I need to scale my TabWidget background images so they maintain aspect ratio. I am using a TabHost with a TabWidget. I am then using setBackgroundDrawable to set the images. I found a close answer here - Background in tab widget ignore scaling. However, I'm not sure just where to add the new Drawable code. (Working with the HelloTabWidget example, none of my modules use RelativeLayout, and I don't see any layout for "tabcontent".) I also found this thread - Android: Scale a Drawable or background image?. According to it, it sounds like I would have to pre-scale my images, which defeats the whole purpose of making them scaleable. I also found another thread where someone subclassed the Drawable class so it would either not scale, or it would scale properly. I can't find it now, but that seems like a LOT to go through when you should just be able to do something simple like mTab.setScaleType(centerInside). I have code that does it, but there's a gap: private void TextBox_KeyUp(object sender, KeyEventArgs e) { if (e.Key != Key.Enter) { return; } TextBox textbox = (TextBox)sender; if (IsTextBoxTheLastOneInTheTemplate(textbox)) { this.mCollection.Add("A new textbox appears!"); } } The function IsTextBoxTheLastOneInTheTemplate() is something that I need, but can't figure out how to write. How would I go about writing it? I've considered using ItemsControl.ItemContainerGenerator, but can't put all the pieces together. Thanks! -Mike

• emacs frustration with web development

  I really liked flexibility of emacs but it is really annoying to make it work. I want to use it for web development html, css, javascript, php. I first tried emacs-starter-kit . It didn't included nXhtml. Also C-g key binding does not work (they call it starter kit but basic key command does not work). I think it is mapped for git control. That's a frustration for a beginner. Then I replaced emacs-starter-kit with nXhtml. At least C-g is working. But code completion sucks, M-tab does not work. I tried code completion from nXhtml menu with no success. Also NXhtml mode did'nt colorized my file if css is mixed with html. Isn't it recommended for mixed html, css,php files. So why it doesnt work?. Why Emacs folks do not aware of convention over configuration? Dam! ship it something works! Please help me before I am getting crazy. I use Ubuntu 10.04 and emacs-snaphot-gtk 23.1.50-1. Please guide step by step with your working dotfile url. Even I accept I am a dummy it really annoying and frustrating to use emacs.

• Header Setup in SOAP with ASP.NET 3.5 WCF

I'm trying to setup a SOAP service that accepts the following header format: <soap:Header> <wsse:Security> <wsse:UsernameToken wsu:Id='SecurityToken-securityToken'> <wsse:Username>Username</wsse:Username> <wsse:Password>Password</wsse:Password> <wsu:Created>Timestamp</wsu:Created> </wsse:UsernameToken> </wsse:Security> </soap:Header> The application I'm incorporating this service into is an ASP.NET 3.5 web application and I've already setup a SOAP endpoint using WCF. I've setup a basic service to make sure the WCF works and it works fine (disregarding the header). I heard that the above format follows WS-Security so I added WSHttpBinding in the web.config: <service name="Nexternal.Service.XMLTools.VNService" behaviorConfiguration="VNServiceBehavior"> <!--The first endpoint would be picked up from the confirg this shows how the config can be overriden with the service host--> <endpoint address="" binding="wsHttpBinding" contract="Nexternal.Service.XMLTools.IVNService"/> </service> I downloaded a test harness (soapUI) and pasted in a test message with the above header and it came back with a 400 Bad Request error. ...for what it's worth, I'm running Visual Studio 2008 using IIS7. • Extracting [] elements from form collection - mvc - should use icollection but have mix of types

  hi there. have looked at Phil Haacks project on books at http://haacked.com/archive/2008/10/23/model-binding-to-a-list.aspx which has been useful, but I have a mix of data types. I use a modelview so that i can have a mix of objects, in this case: Order (ie order.id, order.date etc), Customer, SoilSamplingOrder and a list of SoilSamplingSubJobs which is like this [0].id, [0].field, [1].id, [1].field etc Perhaps I should be using ICollection instead of List? I had problems getting UpdateModel to work so I used an extract from collection method. the first 4 method calls : orderRepository.FindOrder(id); etc give the model the original to be edited. but after this point i'm a little lost in how to update the subjobs. I hope i have delineated enough to make sense of the problem.   I am new to WCF and WCF derived services. I am using VS 2010, silverlight 4, ria services 4. Recently I created plain WCF REST services (no RIA, no SOAP) with my endpoint (using wsHttpBinging): <endpoint address="" behaviorConfiguration="wsBehavior" binding="wsHttpBinding" bindingConfiguration="wsbinding" contract="WcfService1.IService1"/> <behaviors> <endpointBehaviors> <behavior name="wsBehavior"> <webHttp/> </behavior>......... I use this service from silverlight 4 client and everything works fine. THEN, i created new project using "silverlight Business application" template which used RIA service. Now the web.config uses DomainServices and when i add wsHttpBind endpoint I doesnot work. I know i am not doing this correctly and i cant find any help online so far. What I am trying to do is creat a RESTful WCF application with RIA (no SOAP) and that i can use from silverlight 4 client. For some reason i cannot get the service working.

• Preparing a MySQL INSERT/UPDATE statement with DEFAULT values

  Quoting MySQL INSERT manual - same goes for UPDATE: Use the keyword DEFAULT to set a column explicitly to its default value. This makes it easier to write INSERT statements that assign values to all but a few columns, because it enables you to avoid writing an incomplete VALUES list that does not include a value for each column in the table. Otherwise, you would have to write out the list of column names corresponding to each value in the VALUES list. So in short if I write INSERT INTO table1 (column1,column2) values ('value1',DEFAULT); A new row with column2 set as its default value - whatever it may be - is inserted. However if I prepare and execute a statement in PHP: $statement = $pdoObject-> prepare("INSERT INTO table1 (column1,column2) values (?,?)"); $statement->execute(array('value1','DEFAULT')); The new row will contain 'DEFAULT' as its text value - if the column is able to store text values. Now I have written an abstraction layer to PDO (I needed it) and to get around this issue am considering to introduce a const DEFAULT_VALUE = "randomstring"; So I could execute statements like this: $statement->execute(array('value1',mysql::DEFAULT_VALUE)); And then in method that does the binding I'd go through values that are sent to be bound and if some are equal to self::DEFAULT_VALUE, act accordingly. I'm pretty sure there's a better way to do this. Has someone else encountered similar situations?

• PRISM - Creating mouseoverbehavior causes a Silverlight library to not be visible in main Silverligh

  Created a simple Silverlight 4 application (SimpleApp) then added a Silverlight 4 library (LibraryA). Added code to the library (LibraryA) to implement MouseOverBehavior by inheriting from CommandBaseBehavior along with the appropriate attached property class/methods. Added reference in SimpleApp to LibraryA and went to MainPage.xaml to add namespace reference but it does not show up with Intellisense. Typing the namespace manually and then adding the attached MouseOver command works as it should as far as intellisense showing my attached property name, i.e. ... commands:MouseOver.Command="{Binding MousedOver}". However when I try to run it I get a XAML parser error saying that the "Command" attached property does not exist in MouseOver. If I move my class definitions from LibraryA to SimpleApp then everything works. I removed everything from LibraryA and just put one class with this in it: public class MouseOverBehavior : CommandBehaviorBase<Control> { public MouseOverBehavior(Control element) : base(element) {} } With this simple class in LibraryA it will not show up in XAML intellisense in SimpleApp. XAML intellisense works with other libraries that I have written that don't use PRISM. Don't know what I am missing hopefully it's something simple. I am using the latest SL4 build for PRISM change set 42969. Visual Studio 2010 RTM Professional in Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit.

• Problem creating socket with C++ in winsock2

  Hi, I'm having the weirdest problem causing me headaches. Consider the following code: // Create and bind socket std::map<Connection, bool> clients; unsigned short port=6222; struct sockaddr_in local_address, from_address; int result; char buffer[10000]; SOCKET receive_socket; local_address.sin_family = AF_INET; local_address.sin_addr.s_addr = INADDR_ANY; local_address.sin_port = htons(port); receive_socket = socket(AF_INET,SOCK_DGRAM,0); What's happening is receive_socket is not binding, I get SOCKET_ERROR. When I debug the program and check receive_socket, it appears to just be garbled crap. I put a breakpoint on the 'std::map' line. When I step into each line of the above code, the debug cursor jumps straight from the 'unsigned short port' line to the first 'local_address.sin' line, even though I am using step into (F11), it does not stop at struct, int, char or SOCKET lines, it jumps straight over them. At this point I hover my mouse over local_address, from_address, result, buffer and receive_socket. They are all full of garbled crap. Is this because I have not defined these variables yet? I've also noticed that when I reach the bottom of the above code, local_address.sin_port is set to 19992, but it should be 6222?

• Interception with Unity in Prism v2 for WPF (not working for me)

  I cannot get interception to work with Prism v2 (Oct 2009). I am trying to intercept the Setter for any Public Properties and then fire the PropertyChanged event if the property has changed. I can see that the code gets executed (by stepping through with the debugger or adding a debug point). However, the WPF Window controls that are bound to these properties do not get updated. If I subscribe to these events and print to the console, I can print out the property change notifications. So, if the View has a textbox, which updates the property on the ViewModel, then the property in the ViewModel gets updated. However, if a button on the view (implemented as a DelegateCommand) causes the property to get updated, then the textbox (TwoWay Binding Mode) that is bound to that Property is not updated even though the event is triggered and the console has printed out the information about which property was updated. Has anyone encountered this issue? Here is the sample WPF Application that I have written. Wordpress doesn't allow uploads of zip files, so I renamed it to have a pdf extension (rename the file to have a zip extension). Please let me know what I am doing wrong. Thanks in advance.

  I have been using this website to learn a lot about C# for a while, but this is my first time posting a question. I look forward to hearing back from some of the seasoned C# veterans! I have been working on a C# 4.0 WPF project and need to figure out how to databind a boolean value. I have a reference to my Application.Current object in a window. My "App" object contains a boolean field called "Downloaded" that is true if the user has downloaded information from a web service. I need to databind a textbox's IsEnabled field to this Downloaded value. Any tips? Here is what I have come up with so far. (Any useful links to better learn WPF XAML are greatly appreciated!) • Tridion New UI Preview Site is not reflecting with the changes unless pulished

  I have new UI setup and noticing that when ever I update a page it is not refreshing with the updated changes. I do not see either the page_{sessionId/GUID}.aspx created either. Checked the session preview DB and I see the changes in PAGE_CONTENT table with new rendered content, so seems like session preview is working fine but the Preview site is not able to get the changes and refresh the UI. I have checked all the preview handlers and mappings for .aspx and made sure they are correct in web.config. Any thoughts on why the preview site not showing up the changes? • LaTeX book class: Twosided document with wrong margins

  I am trying to write my thesis in latex... Cannot get the layout straight though :? I'm using the following document class: \documentclass[11pt,a4paper,twoside,openright]{book} My problem is: on the odd numbered pages there is a big margin right, and a small margin left - it should be the other way round... (for binding & stuff) I am a little puzzled by this - am I just to stupid to see the obvious? The odd page numbers appear on the 'right' page of a bound document, so there needs to be a larger margin left for bindin. Right? Why does LaTeX not behave like this? • Web service occasionally slows down significantly

  My company is running into a problem with a web service that is written in C#/ASP.Net. The service receives an identity key for data in SQL Server and a path to generate and save a PDF report for this data. In most cases, this web service returns results to the calling web pages very quickly, usually within a few seconds max. However, it seems to occasionally hit a significant slowdown. The web application calling the web service will generate a timeout error when this slowdown occurs. We have checked and the PDF does get created and saved to the server, so it looks like the web service eventually finishes executing. It seems to take about 1 to 2 minutes for processing to have completed. The PDF is generated using ActiveReports from Data Dynamics. Wwhen this problem occurs, making a small change to the web service's config file (ie, adding a blank space to a connection string line) seems to restart the web service and everything is perfectly ok for a period of time afterwards. Other web applications that are running on the same web server do not seem to experience this type of behavior, only this particular web service. I have added the code for the web service below. It is basic calls to 3rd party libraries. We are not able to recreate this problem in test. I am wondering what might be causing this issue? User Response: Modify the portlet.xml of the application such that it matches the original API type, standard or legacy and try again. However, the "portlet.xml" file has not changed in about a month, and I've done several WAR updates for this application in that time with no problems. The problem seems to be caused by the code changes I did yesterday, but I have no clue why a few lines of code would do this. Any ideas?

• Which languages support *recursive* function literals / anonymous functions?

  It seems quite a few mainstream languages support function literals these days. They are also called anonymous functions, but I don't care if they have a name. The important thing is that a function literal is an expression which yields a function which hasn't already been defined elsewhere, so for example in C, &printf doesn't count. EDIT to add: if you have a genuine function literal expression <exp>, you should be able to pass it to a function f(<exp>) or immediately apply it to an argument, ie. <exp>(5). I'm curious which languages let you write function literals which are recursive. Wikipedia's "anonymous recursion" article doesn't give any programming examples. Let's use the recursive factorial function as the example. Here are the ones I know: JavaScript / ECMAScript can do it with callee: function(n){if (n<2) {return 1;} else {return n * arguments.callee(n-1);}} it's easy in languages with letrec, eg Haskell (which calls it let): let fac x = if x<2 then 1 else fac (x-1) * x in fac and there are equivalents in Lisp and Scheme. Note that the binding of fac is local to the expression, so the whole expression is in fact an anonymous function. Are there any others?
