  • Silverlight, JavaScript and HTML 5 - Who wins?

    - by Sahil Malik
SharePoint 2010 Training: more information   Disclaimer: These are just opinions. In the past I have expressed opinions about the future of technology, and have been ridiculously accurate. I have no idea if this will be accurate or not, but that is what it’s all about. Its opinions, predicting the future.   This topic has been boiling inside me for a while, and I have discussed it in private gettogethers with fellow minded techies. But I thought it would be a good idea to put this together as a blogpost. There is some debate about the future of Silverlight, especially in light of technologies such as newer faster browsers, and HTML 5. As a .NET developer, where do I invest my time and skills – remember you have limited time and skills, and not everything that comes out of Microsoft is a smashing success. So it is very very wise for you to consider the facts, macro trends, and allocate what you have limited amounts of – “time”. Read full article ....

  • I will be at NNUG Kristiansand tonight

    - by Sahil Malik
SharePoint 2010 Training: more information Greetings! I will be speaking at NNUG Kristiansand tonight (sorry for the very short notice). So I was thinking what should I demo tonight?Hmm!!!Instead of using any slides or such material, what I thought would be a tonne of fun, would be to develop a service bus based application running in Azure. This will be a good opportunity to code and talk, and run into some snafus and show off some VS2012 improvements/annoyances. At the end of an apprx. 1 hour talk, I hope to have an application ready that you can run yourself by the end of the evening. hehe :) .. now that’s cool isn’t it? :) .. Time permitting I will even tie SP2013 + ADFSv2 + Claims into it, just to be cool. Hope to see you there! • Pivotal change in strategy at Microsoft

    - by Sahil Malik
SharePoint, WCF and Azure Trainings: more information Drop whatever you are doing, and watch this video. Here is what Microsoft’s new CEO Satya Nadella said, .. If there is anything that would define windows, I think of the cloud as being in a heterogeneous device world. It will not be limited to Windows. I think that is perhaps the biggest pivotal change in our strategy. We absolutely think of building services and infrastructure in the cloud that will be across Android, iOS and Windows, and we will differentiate windows family with user experience that is consistent across all these devices .. • SharePoint Content Database Sizing

    - by Sahil Malik
SharePoint, WCF and Azure Trainings: more information SharePoint stores majority of its content in SQL Server databases. Many of these databases are concerned with the overall configuration of the system, or managed services support. However, a majority of these databases are those that accept uploaded content, or collaborative content. These databases need to be sized with various factors in mind, such as, Ability to backup/restore the content quickly, thereby allowing for quicker SLAs and isolation in event of database failure. SharePoint as a system avoids SQL transactions in many instances. It does so to avoid locks, but does so at the cost of resultant orphan data or possible data corruption. Larger databases are known to have more orphan items than smaller ones. Also smaller databases keep the problems isolated. As a result, it is very important for any project to estimate content database base sizing estimation. This is especially important in collaborative document centric projects. Not doing this upfront planning can Read full article ....

  • Disable mobile page redirection for SharePoint 2013

    - by Sahil Malik
SharePoint, WCF and Azure Trainings: more information SharePoint 2013 (foundation too), detects requests from mobile devices and automatically changes the uRL of the requested non mobile page to its mobile substitute. This logic is now built into SPRequestModule. The mobile view is pretty damned amazing. Even though the set of pages for mobile access is completely different, SharePoint has an entirely separate set of controls for the mobile pages. These are in the Microsoft.SharePoint.MobileControls namespace which inherit from Microsoft ASP.NET controls in the System.Web.UI.MobileControls namespace. These Mobile pages can even use mobile Web Part adapters to mimic the behavior of webparts on mobile webpart pages. Read full article ....

  • Lumia 920 or iPhone5, which is it gonna be?

    - by Sahil Malik
SharePoint 2010 Training: more information Deciding on a new phone is so difficult. I currently use an iPhone4, and I am itching to upgrade to either iPhone5 or Lumia 920. The decision is difficult because a lot of my work depends on my communication device, and whatever I pick, I will be stuck with for 2 years. Here is how I see the two stacking up. iPhone 5 of course based on rumors so far. I didn’t even consider Android here because I don’t like Android as an OS. It’s too insecure, privacy intrusive, and frankly unreliable. I cannot bet my work on Android, sorry not gonna happen. Read full article ....

  • Oct 5th DevReach in Sofia, Bulgaria

    - by Sahil Malik
SharePoint 2010 Training: more information I will be at DevReach, my top favorite conference on Oct 5th. I have been visiting Devreach since it’s very inception. I don’t do a lot of conferences, just 3 or 4 a year. I am super duper picky about what conferences I attend. One of the key reasons I love visiting DevReach is the audience quality. The developers in Bulgaria are shockingly intelligent. I have always enjoyed the extremely intelligent questions and conversations I get to engage in at DevReach. And Sofia is an amazing city to top it all. My sessions this year are as follows, Day 2, 11:30 - 12:30 Architecture SPvNext – A Look At All the Exciting And New Features In SharePoint Day 2, 09:00 - 10:00 Architecture Read full article ....

  • Removing AppPrincipals from Office365

    - by Sahil Malik
SharePoint, WCF and Azure Trainings: more information So here is an annoying issue. If I have your AppPrincipal and secret, I can party as you! But as we go through our usual dev cycles, we create these ApplicationIDs. Hell Visual Studio will create them for us, to make things easy! The problem is, many a developer, and some a ITOgre, may leave these AppPrincipalIds sitting there and not clean them up when they are done playing. You can look for currently registered App Principals at https://yourtenant/_layouts/15/appprincipals.aspx The problem is, that URL shows you App Principals registered AND currently in use. Currently NOT in use App Principals are NOT shown on that page. The same issue applies on premises also, even though here I am talking specifically about Office 365. Getting rid of these in On-Prem is easy, just use the Object model (server side). Read full article ....

  • On-Premises to Office 365: Identity

    - by Sahil Malik
SharePoint, WCF and Azure Trainings: more information “Run your business, not your mail server.” I am not sure where I read that, but it makes so much sense! Every organization is moving to the cloud, and some just haven’t started their journey yet. One of the fastest and most compelling online cloud based offerings is Office 365. Available in various SKUs, you can get SharePoint, Lync, Exchange, and Office professional as cloud-based offerings. The subscriptions are as low as $2 per user per month to $20 something per user per month. Also, with SharePoint 2013, if you buy Office 365 subscriptions for your users, you don’t need to buy CALs (Client Access Licenses) for on-premises use. Read full article here. • SharePoint 2013 Licensing Simplified

    - by Sahil Malik
SharePoint 2010 Training: more information Before I begin, let me preface this by saying, I don't work for Microsoft, I don't sell SharePoint, this is merely my understanding of the SharePoint 2013 licensing model. As always, before making any money decisions based on the below, talk to your Microsoft rep. The below is just my understanding, you are responsible for any decision you may take. With that aside, here is how I understand SharePoint 2013 licensing. Note that everything below is for on-prem SharePoint only. Also it goes without saying that you need to purchase windows server and SQL server licenses etc. on top of what you read below. The Basics. You need to buy two things - the SharePoint server, and CALs. SharePoint server comes in SharePoint foundation, standard and enterprise. CALs can be either enterprise or standard, and they can be bought as CALs for SharePoint or a CAL suite which includes exchange and lync. CALs can also be purchased and user CAL or device CAL. • The document.body.innerHTML.replace() replaces the url in the address bar.

    - by divya
I am trying to make an extension as part of which i want certain words in the web pages to be highlighted. The document.body.innerHTML.replace() replaces the url in the address bar as well. So the moment this code gets exwecuted the page doesnt get loaded properly.. Is there a way around this problem? onPageLoad: function(aEvent) { var doc = aEvent.originalTarget; var str="the"; var regex; var regex = new RegExp(str, "g"); doc.body.innerHTML = doc.body.innerHTML.replace(regex,'<b>'+str+'</b>'); } The listener is registered as follows in a browser.xul overlay: window.addEventListener("load", function() { myExtension.init(); }, false); var myExtension = { init: function() { var appcontent = document.getElementById("appcontent"); // browser if(appcontent) appcontent.addEventListener("DOMContentLoaded", myExtension.onPageLoad, false); },

  • Change only Revision number in AssemblyInfo.cs with msbuild FileUpdate task

    - by Divya mohan Singh
I need to change only the revision number of an AssemblyInfo.cs file. The version number is in the format Major.Minor.Build.Revision e.g. 1.4.6.0. Currently I change the version with the FileUpdate task (from the MSBuild Community Tasks Project) and the following regex: <FileUpdate Files="@(AssemblyResult)" Regex='(\[\s*assembly:\s*AssemblyVersion\(\s*"[^\.]+\.[^\.]+)\.([^\.]+)(\.)([^\.]+)("\)\s*\])' ReplacementText='[assembly: AssemblyVersion("$(AssemblyMajorNumber).$(AssemblyMinorNumber).$(AssemblyBuildNumber).$(Revision)")]' /> Now I need to update only the revision number and leave major, minor and build unchanged. So, is there any task to do this? Or can it be done with a regex? What would be the regular expression then?

  • Using PHP and cURL to login to indyarocks.com

    - by Divya
I am new to cURL and don't know much about it. I basically want to login to my account on www.indyarocks.com through libcurl for PHP. I don't know what type of authentication it uses (I don't know how to find that out.). When I go to http://www.indyarocks.com, I get a login form which asks for my username and password. I put in my username and password and click login and everything is good. I tried to automate this using cURL. This is a snippet of my code. curl_setopt($curl_connection, CURLOPT_URL, "http://www.indyarocks.com/loginchk.php"); curl_setopt($curl_connection, CURLOPT_POST, 1); curl_setopt($curl_connection, CURLOPT_HTTPAUTH, CURLAUTH_ANY); curl_setopt($curl_connection, CURLOPT_USERPWD, $username.':'.$password); I looked at the source of the login page and found out the address of the page to which the username and password are sent (the action attribute of the form) which is "http://www.indyarocks.com/loginchk.php" and set it as the target url. When I run this, I get username or password is wrong error and the login fails. My username and password is correct. I don't know what the problem is. Can the password be encrypted? Can that be responsible for this failure? Please help me get around this problem. I'll be really thankful. Thanks in advance.
