  • SSH dynamic port forwarding, "Connection refused"

    I am trying to do dynamic portforwarding using openssh through a remote computer following this command: ssh -D 6789 rohan@<remote_ip> -p <remote_port> This should set up a socks server on my comp as I assume. I am able to use this for normal browsing but can't connect to IRC or remote ssh (through proxychains).   • LINQ TO SQL, Dynamic query with DATE type fields

    Hello, I'm building a query with the LINQ dynamic library so I don't know how many potential parameters will I have and I get an error when trying to query DATE type fields: Operator '=' incompatible with operand types 'DateTime' and 'String' When I step through the debugger in the Dynamic.cs it shows that the value is of type string and the field is of type date so the problem is obvious but I have no idea how to approach it. Any ideas? BR

  • Initializing entities vs having a constructor parameter

    I'm working on a turn-based tile-based puzzle game, and to create new entities, I use this code: Field.CreateEntity(10, 5, Factory.Player()); This creates a new Player at [10; 5]. I'm using a factory-like class to create entities via composition. This is what the CreateEntity method looks like: public void CreateEntity(int mX, int mY, Entity mEntity) { mEntity.Field = this; TileManager.AddEntity(mEntity, true); GetTile(mX, mY).AddEntity(mEntity); mEntity.Initialize(); InvokeOnEntityCreated(mEntity); } Since many of the components (and also logic) of the entities require to know what the tile they're in is, or what the field they belong to is, I need to have mEntity.Initialize(); to know when the entity knows its own field and tile. The Initialize(); method contains a call to an event handler, so that I can do stuff like this in the factory class: result.OnInitialize += () => result.AddTags(TDLibConstants.GroundWalkableTag, TDLibConstants.TrapdoorTag); result.OnInitialize += () => result.AddComponents(new RenderComponent(), new ElementComponent(), new DirectionComponent()); This works so far, but it is not elegant and it's very open to bugs. I'm also using the same idea with components: they have a parameterless constructor, and when you call the AddComponent(mComponent); method in an entity, it is the entity's job to set the component's entity to itself. The alternative would be having a Field, int, int parameters in the factory class, to do stuff like: new Entity(Field, 10, 5); But I also don't like the fact that I have to create new entities like this. I would prefer creating entities via the Field object itself. How can I make entity/component creation more elegant and less prone to bugs?

    SQLite3 uses dynamic typing rather than static typing, in contrast to other flavors of SQL. The SQLite website reads: Most SQL database engines (every SQL database engine other than SQLite, as far as we know) uses static, rigid typing. With static typing, the datatype of a value is determined by its container - the particular column in which the value is stored. SQLite uses a more general dynamic type system. In SQLite, the datatype of a value is associated with the value itself, not with its container. It seems to me that this is exactly what you don't want, as it lets you store, for example, strings in integer columns. The page continues: ...the dynamic typing in SQLite allows it to do things which are not possible in traditional rigidly typed databases. I have two questions: The use case question: What are some examples where sqlite3's dynamic typing is, in fact, beneficial? The historical/design question: What was the motivation for implementing sqlite with dynamic typing?

    I'm trying to convert a Dictionary< dynamic, dynamic to a statically-typed one by examining the types of the keys and values and creating a new Dictionary of the appropriate types using Reflection. If I know the key and value types, I can do the following: Type dictType = typeof(Dictionary<,>); newDict = Activator.CreateInstance(dictType.MakeGenericType(new Type[] { keyType, valueType })); However, I may need to create, for example, a Dictionary< MyKeyType, dynamic if the values are not all of the same type, and I can't figure out how to specify the dynamic type, since typeof(dynamic) isn't viable. How would I go about doing this, and/or is there a simpler way to accomplish what I'm trying to do?

    Hi all, i think i read every single web page relating to this problem but i still cannot find a solution to it, so here i am. I have an HTML web page wich is not under my control and i need to parse it from my iPhone application. Here it is a sample of the web page i'm talking about: <HTML> <HEAD> <META http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1"> </HEAD> <BODY> <LI class="bye bye" rel="hello 1"> <H5 class="onlytext"> <A name="morning_part">morning</A> </H5> <DIV class="mydiv"> <SPAN class="myclass">something about you</SPAN> <SPAN class="anotherclass"> <A href="http://www.google.it">Bye Bye &egrave; un saluto</A> </SPAN> </DIV> </LI> </BODY> </HTML> I'm using NSXMLParser and it is going well till it find the è html entity. It calls foundCharacters: for "Bye Bye" and then it calls resolveExternalEntityName:systemID:: with an entityName of "egrave". In this method i'm just returning the character "è" trasformed in an NSData, the foundCharacters is called again adding the string "è" to the previous one "Bye Bye " and then the parser raise the NSXMLParserUndeclaredEntityError error. I have no DTD and i cannot change the html file i'm parsing. Do you have any ideas on this problem? Thanks in advance to all of you, Rob. Update (12/03/2010). I want to use L2E since it s very convenient to my company's apps, I created a demo project, the demo does run on every machine but when I, lets say, press a button that has some code that uses the entity I get this error: specified store provider cannot be found in the configuration, or is not valid. note that I get this error only on machines that does not have VS2008 installed, on these machines (the ones with VS2008) the demo works well. any advice is appreciated. I am using MySql server with Mysql Conector 6.3 and the model is created with ADO.Net entitiy model.   • Method 'SingleOrDefault' not supported by Linq to Entities

    I read other posts on similar problem on using SingleOfDefault on Linq-To-Entity, some suggested using "First()" and some others suggested using "Extension" method to implement the Single(). This code throws exception: Movie movie = (from a in movies where a.MovieID == '12345' select a).SingleOrDefault(); If I convert the object query to a List using .ToList(), "SingleOrDefault()" actually works perfectly without throwing any error. My question is: Is it not good to convert to List? Is it going to be performance issue for more complicated queries? What does it get translated in SQL?   • LINQ to Entities pulling back entire table

    In my application I'm pulling back a user's "feed". This contains all of that user's activities, events, friend requests from other users, etc. When I pull back the feed I'm calling various functions to filter the request along the way. var userFeed = GetFeed(db); // Query to pull back all data userFeed = FilterByUser(userFeed, user, db); // Filter for the user userFeed = SortFeed(userFeed, page, sortBy, typeName); // Sort it The data that is returned is exactly what I need, however when I look at a SQL Profile Trace I can see that the query that is getting this data does not filter it at the database level and instead is selecting ALL data in the table(s). This query does not execute until I iterate through the results on my view. All of these functions return an IEnumerable object. I was under the impression that LINQ would take all of my filters and form one query to pull back the data I want instead of pulling back all the data and then filtering it on the server. What am I doing wrong or what don't I understand about the way LINQ evaluates queries?

I want to use L2E since it s very convenient to my company's apps, I created a demo project, the demo does run on every machine but when I, lets say, press a button that has some code that uses the entity I get this error: specified store provider cannot be found in the configuration, or is not valid. note that I get this error only on machines that does not have VS2008 installed, on these machines (the ones with VS2008) the demo works well. any advice is appreciated.

    For my ASP.NET MVC 2 application I use Entity Framework 1.0 as my data access layer (repository). But I decided I want to return POCO. For the first time I have encountered a problem when I wanted to get a list of Brands with their optional logos. Here's what I did: public IQueryable<Model.Products.Brand> GetAll() { IQueryable<Model.Products.Brand> brands = from b in EntitiesCtx.Brands.Include("Logo") select new Model.Products.Brand() { BrandId = b.BrandId, Name = b.Name, Description = b.Description, IsActive = b.IsActive, Logo = /*b.Logo != null ? */new Model.Cms.Image() { ImageId = b.Logo.ImageId, Alt = b.Logo.Alt, Url = b.Logo.Url }/* : null*/ }; return brands; } You can see in the comments what I would like to achieve. It worked fine whenever a Brand had a Logo otherwise it through an exception that you can assign null to the non-nullable type int (for Id). My workaround was to use nullable in the POCO class but that's not natural - then I have to check not only if Logo is null in my Service layer or Controllers and Views but mostly for Logo.ImageId.HasValue. It's not justified to have a non null Logo property if the id is null. Can anyone think of a better solution?

    I'm trying to convert characters like < and > into &lt; and &gt; etc. User input is taken from a text box, and then copied into a DIV called changer. here's my code: function updateChanger() { var message = document.getElementById('like').value; message = convertHTML(message); document.getElementById('changer').innerHTML = message; } function convertHTML(input) { input = input.replace('<', '&lt;'); input = input.replace('>', '&gt;'); return input; } But it doesn't seem to replace >, only <. Also tried like this: input = input.replace('<', '&lt;').replace('>', '&gt;'); But I get the same result. Can anyone point out what I'm doing wrong here? Cheers.

    I've seen two different manners that programmers approach when creating an entity context in their code. The first is like such, and you can find it all over the MSDN code examples: public void DoSomething() { using TaxableEducationEntities context = new TaxableEducationEntities()) { // business logic and whatever else } } The second is to create the context as a private attribute in some class that encapsulates your business logic. So you would have something like: public class Education_LINQ { private TaxableEducationEntities context = new TaxableEducationEntities(); public void DoSomething() { var result = from a in context.luAction select a; // business logic and whatever else } } Which way is more efficient? Assume that you have two methods, one called DoSomething1() and another called DoSomething2(), and both methods incorporate the using statement to open the context and do whatever with it. Were you to call one method after the other, would there be any superfluous overhead going on, since essentially both methods create the context and then clean it up when they're done? As opposed to having just one private attribute that is created when a class object is instantiated, and then in turn cleaned up when the object goes out of scope?

    Hi There, I have an Entity Model that has Items, which can belong to one or more categories, and which can have one or more tags. I need to write a query that finds all tags for a given ItemCategory, preferably with a single call to the database, as this is going to get called fairly often. I currently have: Dim q = (From ic In mContext.ItemCategory _ Where ic.CategoryID = forCategoryID _ Select ic).SelectMany(Function(cat) cat.Items).SelectMany(Function(i) i.Tags) _ .OrderByDescending(Function(t) t.Items.Count).ToList This is nearly there, apart from it doesn't contain the items for each tag, so I'd have to iterate through, loading the item reference to find out how many items each tag is related to (for font sizing). Ideally, I want to return a List(Of TagCount), which is just a structure, containing Tag as string, and Count as integer. I've looked at Group and Join, but I'm not getting anywhere so any help would be greatly appreciated!

    I could swear this was working the other day: var resultSet = (from o in _entities.Table1 where o.Table2.Table3.SomeColumn == SomeProperty select o ).First(); SelectedItem = resultSet.Table2.SomeOtherColumn; I am getting a null reference exception on the last line: resultSet.Table2 is null. Not only am I sure that all the foreign keys and whatnot have the correct values, but I don't see how Table2 could be null, since o.Table2.Table3.SomeColumn == SomeProperty. resultSet is being returned with all its properties set to the correct values, with the exception that Table2 is null.

The forum without posts must be returned with null (or default) values for the post properties.

    If I have a static method like this public static string GetTicClassificationTitle(string classI, string classII, string classIII) { using (TicDatabaseEntities ticdb = new TicDatabaseEntities()) { var result = from classes in ticdb.Classifications where classes.ClassI == classI where classes.ClassII == classII where classes.ClassIII == classIII select classes.Description; return result.FirstOrDefault(); } } and use this method in various places in foreach loops or just plain calling it numerous times, does it create and open new connection every time? If so, how can I tackle this? Should I cache the results somewhere, like in this case, I would cache the entire Classifications table in Memory Cache? And then do queries vs this cached object? Or should I make TicDatabaseEntities variable static and initialize it at class level? Should my class be static if it contains only static methods? Because right now it is not.. Also I've noticed that if I return result.First() instead of FirstOrDefault() and the query does not find a match, it will issue an exception (with FirstOrDefault() there is no exception, it returns null). Thank you for clarification.
