• Best way to let users choose country/language when submiting an URL to a directory

  Hi all, I want to offer the user the possibility to add the country/language for websites they would submit to a fairly simple website directory. I have a folder with flags from http://www.famfamfam.com/lab/icons/flags/ . The flag images are named according to the ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 country codes, meaning that I could make a PHP script that would be able to retrieve images and the name of the country retrieved from the image name (not the full name, but it wouldn't be necessary). Just to make things clearer, I couldn't find a proper combo-box jQuery plugin for my needs (that would act exactly like the native but with an icon before the text) and don't really have the time to develop one on my own. Considering the number of images, I also wouldn't just display them all with a radio box near them. Also, having a classic drop-down list would be a nightmare for me as I would have to assign the short country name manually to each entry, or do it once for every country. Offering the user a dropdown list with the short country names but no flag near them would also be unfriendly and confusing. The idea is that every website featured in the directory would have the country flag icon near it. I have the images named properly but I don't know how to let the user choose the right image for their website. Any idees? Thank you all in advance!   Lets say i currently have mycompanyname.com domain. and after several time i found that its very hard to hit top of serp. after searching i find there is domain that match with one of my keyword. i build website with 2 language. and im able to assign both of url with different language. my question, impact with SEO? it will have a load of duplicated content between those domain (image video etc). im afraid one of my website will have marked as plagiarist because many of content will be same. anyone experience the same condition? • Creating country specific twitter/facebook accounts

  I see many companies that have an international presence trying to localize their social media presence by creating country or language specific accounts. However some seemed to have done so without following a consistent pattern, one example being the World Wildlife Fund when you look at their Twitter accounts: World_Wildlife : verified account with 200K followers WWF : main account with 800K followers www_uk : lower case with underscore between WWF and country indicator WWFCanada : upper case with country indicator attached to WWF ... I am planning to build a website which hopefully will grow global and would like to avoid this sort of inconsistencies. Also, I was comparing what Twitter and Facebook allow in their username and found out that they don't allow the same characters to be used (e.g. for instance that the former doesn't allow . whereas the latter does) making difficult to ensure consistency across social networks. Hence my questions: Are there known naming schemes for creating localized Twitter and Facebook accounts while maintaining a certain consistency between them (best effort)? Are there any researches out there that have proven whether some schemes were better than others in terms of readability and/or SEO?

• Correctly indexing multiple domains with same content in Google and others

  I have a client with a dozen territorial domains, like mydomain.co.uk, mydomain.fr, mydomain.de, etc Most of these domains hold a different language of the same dynamic content (shop), but some, like co.uk and .com, have the same language and content, except for some content customized to each country/domain in the front page, contact and other pages. I am aware that we should use the canonical meta tag to mark those duplicated contents, but, we want the co.uk to be present in UK ( indexed in google.co.uk ) and the .com to be present in US and other countries, for example, or least that is the goal. Is there anything we can do to "help" google determine the geographical meaning of each domain? If we mark with canonical tag the .com and co.uk sites, do you know how google will decide which one to show on a given search?

• jQuery/AJAX on old Computers/Browsers

  I am working on a plattform that will have a lot of users in the so called "developing countries". So many of them will be using old computers and old browsers in tiny internet cafes. We want to make sure to give them a good user Experience and make sure the website loads as fast as possible. Problem is, that while you can save a lot of requeasts and time, using jQuery/AJAX, it also brings along a lot of Problems: - Will the Computers be powerfull enough to deal with the client side scripts? - Will the old Browsers handle jQuery? Does anyone have any experience with these sort of problems or might know of some sort of article on the topic?

  So I have created a video website which has thousands of videos and thousands of videos get added to it on a daily basis. Here is my problem :- I have created a website which basically loads the skeleton in html and puts all the content through javascript and Ajax. The problem is search engines aren't going anywhere except for the home page. Is there a way say in robots.txt where i give a link to a single html which has links to all these videos ? I agree my site is not accessible for a non-javascript user but stats show that this ratio is very low ( 0.2 % ). Is there a way I can still keep the complete AJAX website and still get each individual videos listed on google ?

  Hi all! I've got a cms-driven website, with no option to change the code. What I want to accomplish is creating friendly url's, using only apaches mod-rewrite engine. The problem is I'm creating an infinite loop, because I first redirect the original url (index.php?id=21) to a friendly one (/friendly/) and then rewrite the '/friendly' part back to 'id=21' I know there should be an extra condition or parameter to avoid looping in this case, but I can´t get one of the possible solutions to work. • Touch friendly GUI in Windows Mobile

  I'm porting an audio processing application written in C++ from Windows to Windows Mobile (version 5+). Basically what I need to port is the GUI. The application is quite complicated and the GUI will need to be able to offer a lot of functionality. I would like to create a touch friendly user interface that also looks good. Which basically means that standard WinMo controls are out the window. I've looked at libraries such as Fluid and they look like something I would like to use. However, as I said I'm developing i C++. Even though it would be possible to only write the GUI part i some .NET language I rather not. My experience with .NET on Windows Mobile is that it doesn't work very well... Can anyone either suggest a C/C++ touch friendly GUI library for Windows Mobile or some kind of "best practices" document/how-to on how to use the standard Windows Mobile controls in order to make the touch friendly and also work and look well in later versions of Windows Mobile (in particular version 6.5)?

  Hello, I need a good Unicode library for C++. I need Transformations in Unicode sensitive way. For example sort all strings in case insensitive way and get their first characters for index. Convert to upper and to lower various Unicode strings. Split text in reasonable position -- words that would work for Chinese and Japanese as well. Formatting numbers, dates in locale sensitive way (should be thread safe). Transparent support of utf8 (primary internal representation). As far as I know the best library is ICU. However, I can't find normal developer friendly API documentation with examples. Also as far as I see, it is not too friendly with modern C++ design, work with STL and so on. • "User Friendly" .net compatible Regex/Text matching tools?

  Currently in our software we provide a hook where we call a DLL built by our clients to parse information out of documents we are processing (the DLL takes in some text (or a file) and returns a list of name/value pairs). e.g. We're given a Word doc or Text file to Archive. We do various things to the file, and call a DLL that will return "pertinent" information about the file. Among other things we store that "pertinent" data for posterity. What is considered "pertinent" depends on the client and the type of the document, we don't care, we get it and store it. I've been asked to develop a user friendly "something" that will allow a non-programmer user to "configure" how to get this data from a plain text document (<humor>The user story ends with the helpful suggestion/query "We could use regex for this?"</humor>) It's safe to assume that a list of regex's isn't going to cut this, I've written some of these parsers for customers, the regex's to do these would be hedious and some of them can't be done by regex's. Also one of the requirements above is "user friendly" which negates anything that has users seeing or editing regex expressions. As you can guess, I don't have a fortune of time to do this, and am wondering is there anything out there that I can plug in to our app that has a nice front end and does exactly what I need? :) No? Whadda mean no! . . . sigh Ok then failing that, anything out there that "visually" builds regex's and/or other pattern matching expressions, and then allows one to run those expressions against some text? The MS BRE will do what I want, but I need something prettier that looks less like code. Thanks guys,

• Complete failure to compile when include CSS Friendly Adapters

  Background - I am trying to use the friendly adapters to override the default styling for the standard asp.net menu control that is used by an existing project. The existing project functions normally and compiles when requested without incident. Adding in the code for the for the CSS Friendly adapter and not only does it not compile, but it never even really starts. The Problem in Detail - I am using the sample code from Scott on this page: http://weblogs.asp.net/scottgu/archive/2006/09/08/CSS-Control-Adapter-Toolkit-Update.aspx. The sample project compiles fine, just within the existing project does it fail. Fails without a line number or any other traceable info. It definately appears to be related to the CSSMenuAdapter.browser file, which has been referenced by others online as the cause of similar error. I have tried addind and readding, using as a dll, using as a code file in app code, etc. I am working with aspdotnetstorefront in this case, although it is not unique to them as I have found other references in software packages online. Only thing is, no one ever says what solved the issue. I am using Windows 7, VS2008 Express and SQL Express 2008 R2. The full error msg is: Error 10 Exception of type 'System.OutOfMemoryException' was thrown. Notice that there is no file, line, or column info. Really need some help here. I have been working on this a long time. This really should have tag: cssfriendlyadapter but I could not create that.

• Apache friendly urls

  Hi everyone. I've got a small CMS system written in PHP and running on Apache. The format of the URLs this CMS system uses/generates is: /display.php?PageID=xxx where xxx is just some integer number. As you can see, those URLs are not very friendly, neither for users nor search engines. I believe that using mod_rewrite (or something like that) and .htaccess files I should be able to configure Apache for URL-rewriting. I have searched for information about this before but I did not find any easy method to do this, it always involved messing with regular expressions, which I'm not very familiar with. Since the website in question is really simple and small, just 5-10 different pages, I would really like to be able to just hard-code the configuration, without any special rules or regexps. I'd just like to map a friendly URL to an actual URL, perhaps like this: /about = /display.php?PageID=44 /products = /display.php?PageID=34 etc. Is it possible to configure the mod_rewrite plugin in a basic way like this? Could someone explain the easiest method to do this? Explain it to me as if I was a child :-) Thanks in advance!

• Barracuda spam filter alternative - virtualization/appliance friendly?

  I've sold and deployed Barracuda spam and web filters for years. I've always thought that the functionality was good (Barracuda Central, easy interface, effective filtering), but the hardware on the entry to midrange units is a weak point. They have single power supplies, no RAID and limited monitoring support. Personally, I think Barracuda would make a killing selling their software as a VMWare appliance, but I'm looking for something similar that I can deploy as a consultant, but will be easy for customers to manage. It should have support for server-grade hardware or the ability to be deployed as a virtual machine. Is there anything out there that's close?

• Mac friendly file sharing from VirtualBox

  I have set up Ruby on Rails on Ubuntu into a VirtualBox instance on my PC, I enabled Samba and I'm connecting to it via the home network from my Mac. All is fine except that I have some issues deleting some files from inside applications e.g. in Sublime Text 2 when I right click a file in the browser and select delete nothing happens (same in my Git client). To be able to delete files I have to navigate to the folder in Finder (which leaves those nasty .DS_Store files scattered all around) or issue the delete command from the terminal (inconvenient). If you're asking why I'm using VirtualBox for Rails instead of doing the development directly on the Mac it's because the ease of portability. So my question is: are there any network sharing options which I could use to make the Linux instance play nicer with my Mac?

• Making Python scripts more user friendly?

  I have a bunch of python scripts I've put together that cut down on busy work, but I'd like to be able to share them in an easier-to-use format for others to be used internally. The scripts aren't accessing anything local, just open API's across a couple web apps. Ideally: a) Users wouldn't have to have a python compiler installed b) They can be using Windows when running it. c) It's simple enough they can just click something, and it will work. I've tried some of the Windows Python executable compilers, but none have really worked well and I was considering just uploading it to a webserver and putting up some basic password access protection around it Any suggestions for sharing scripts?

It is frustrating when using tab completion that you need to type: ./serviceScript.sh [sta|sto] before there is enough information for tab-completion to complete the word start or stop. • Will Hotmail DELIVER to spam-friendly ISP?

  I have a user who is using Hotmail to communicate with one of our suppliers. Recently, Hotmail started bouncing emails to that address (while other ISPs are working fine.) Hotmail bounce messages contain very little details. Investigating, I found that the supplier's ISP has appeared on a blacklist of ISPs who do not do enough to prevent spamming from their users. (Note: Neither my user nor the supplier are mass-mailing.) In the circumstances, I can understand Hotmail declining to accept emails from the host, or accepting them but being quick to mark them as spam. However, I am surprised that they might refuse delivery. Does this sound plausible to you, or am I barking up the wrong tree?
