    What's the best/canonical way to define a function with optional named arguments? To make it concrete, let's create a function foo with named arguments a, b, and c, which default to 1, 2, and 3, respectively. For comparison, here's a version of foo with positional arguments: foo[a_:1, b_:2, c_:3] := bar[a,b,c] Here is sample input and output for the named-arguments version of foo: foo[] --> bar[1,2,3] foo[b->7] --> bar[1,7,3] foo[a->6, b->7, c->8] --> bar[6,7,8] It should of course also be easy to have positional arguments before the named arguments.

    I think the title "Method flags as arguments or as member variables?" may be suboptimal, but as I'm missing any better terminology atm., here goes: I'm currently trying to get my head around the problem of whether flags for a given class (private) method should be passed as function arguments or via member variable and/or whether there is some pattern or name that covers this aspect and/or whether this hints at some other design problems. By example (language could be C++, Java, C#, doesn't really matter IMHO): class Thingamajig { private ResultType DoInternalStuff(FlagType calcSelect) { ResultType res; for (... some loop condition ...) { ... if (calcSelect == typeA) { ... } else if (calcSelect == typeX) { ... } else if ... } ... return res; } private void InteralStuffInvoker(FlagType calcSelect) { ... DoInternalStuff(calcSelect); ... } public void DoThisStuff() { ... some code ... InternalStuffInvoker(typeA); ... some more code ... } public ResultType DoThatStuff() { ... some code ... (Where DoInternalStuffwill be used privately at other places in this class, e.g. in the DoThatStuff (public) method.) An alternative solution would be to add a member variable that carries this information: class Thingamajig { private ResultType DoInternalStuff() { ResultType res; for (... some loop condition ...) { ... if (m_calcSelect == typeA) { ... } ... } ... return res; } private void InteralStuffInvoker() { ... On the other hand, this member variable isn't really representing any object state (as it's neither set nor available outside), but is really a hidden additional argument for the "inner" private method.     Hi, We have a application which is triggered from browser. This application consumes around 800 mb of memory. This works perfectly when invoked from any browsers in windows OS. The same application when triggered from MacOS throws an out of memory exception which occurs when the application is short of memory. Is there any way to increase the memory allocated for apps running in mac os environment. Also please let me know how JVM arguments can be passed to apps started through java webstart in macOS.   • Should I make sure arguments aren't null before using them in a function.

    The title may not really explain what I'm really trying to get at, couldn't really think of a way to describe what I mean. I was wondering if it is good practice to check the arguments that a function accepts for nulls or empty before using them. I have this function which just wraps some hash creation like so. Public Shared Function GenerateHash(ByVal FilePath As IO.FileInfo) As String If (FilePath Is Nothing) Then Throw New ArgumentNullException("FilePath") End If Dim _sha As New Security.Cryptography.MD5CryptoServiceProvider Dim _Hash = Convert.ToBase64String(_sha.ComputeHash(New IO.FileStream(FilePath.FullName, IO.FileMode.Open, IO.FileAccess.Read))) Return _Hash End Function As you can see I just takes a IO.Fileinfo as an argument, at the start of the function I am checking to make sure that it is not nothing. I'm wondering is this good practice or should I just let it get to the actual hasher and then throw the exception because it is null.? Thanks.

    We can create a function p in the following code: var p = function() { }; if (typeof(console) != 'undefined' && console.log) { p = function() { console.log(arguments); }; } but the arguments are passed like an array to console.log, instead of passed one by one as in console.log(arguments[0], arguments[1], arguments[2], ... Is there a way to expand the arguments and pass to console.log like the way above? Note that if the original code were var p = function() { }; if (typeof(console) != 'undefined' && console.log) { p = console.log; } then it works well on Firefox and IE 8 but not on Chrome.

    I'm reflecting over a class (in a unit test of said class) to make sure its members have all the required attributes. To do so, I've constructed a couple of helpers, that take an Expression as an argument. I do some checks for it, and take slightly different actions depending on what type of Expression it is, but it's basically the same. Now, my problem is that I have several methods with the same name (but different signatures), and the following code throws an AmbiguousMatchException: // TOnType is a type argument for the type where the method is declared // mce is the MethodCallExpression var m = typeof(TOnType).GetMethod(mce.Method.Name); Now, if I could add an array of Type[] with the types of the arguments to this method as a second parameter to .GetMethod(), the problem would be solved. But how do I find this Type[] array that I need? I have cast the Expression<Func<...>> to an Expression, and then to a MethodCallExpression, and in this method the contents of <...> is not known.

  • Apache returns 304, I want it to ignore anything from client and send the page

    I am using Apache HTTPD 2.2 on Windows. mod_expires is commented out. Most other stuff are not changed from the defaults. gzip is on. I made some changes to my .js files. My client gets one 304 response for one of the .js files and never gets the rest. How can I force Apache to sort of flush everything and send all new files to the client?     I receive this message when trying to change my password: "Bad: new and old password are too similar" The passwords' "similarity" is irrelevant for my needs, so I'd like to bypass this. I tried sudo passwd $my_username I thought this had worked because I got a message: passwd: password updated successfully However, the password change has no effect after leaving the terminal, and my old password is still the only one recognized. Any ideas? thanks

But when I do what I believe is a numerical sort in Perl, I'm getting strange results. Some segments are sorted in order, but then a different segment starts up. Here is a segment after sorting: ... H01578 H01579 H01580 H01581 H01582 H01583 H01584 H00536 H00537 H00538 H01585 H01586 H01587 H01588 H01589 H01590 ... What I'm trying is this: my @sorted_array = sort {$a <=> $b} @raw_array; But obviously it is not working. Anyone know why?

When I set the sysctl values with "sysctl -w " all work fine, but when I try to use the sysctl.conf file. the net settings will be ignored.     I've been using Elementary Desktop for a while, but after the last update, Docky have broken. I've tried using the Docky stable ppa, but it is overridden by the Elementary ppa, as they provide a newer version of Docky. I would like to keep receiving updates to the Elementary theme, but I would also like to use the older version of Docky. Is there any way I can do this, or do I simply have to file a bug and wait?

  • Why does the Git community seem to ignore side-by-side diffs

    I used to use Windows, SVN, Tortoise SVN, and Beyond Compare. It was a great combination for doing code reviews. Now I use OSX and Git. I've managed to kludge together a bash script along with Gitx and DiffMerge to come up with a barely acceptable solution. I've muddled along with this setup, and similar ones, for over a year. I've also tried using the Github diff viewer and the Gitx diff viewer, so it's not like I've not given them a chance. There are so many smart people doing great stuff with Git. Why not the side-by-side diff with the option of seeing the entire file? With people who have used both, I've never heard of anyone that likes the single +/- view better, at least for more than a quick check.

    I developed a web project for my company and this project was designed to use Mozilla Firefox (including the javascript (jQuery)). However, now the company wants the project to be transferred to Internet Explorer. I know that in Google, there are several explanations about Mozilla Firefox, which I can demonstrate to the company. But is there any link showing that Internet Explorer runs the W3C standards and has several justifications for why using Mozilla Firefox? I searched on youtube and slideshare, but both have a very weak argument for me to select them and show to the company. The company where I work is still very naive to keep Internet Explorer. 1) The project is intranet. Only 400 internal employees can access the web. 2) The company argues that Mozilla Firefox is not approved by the company. Any suggestions? Any link which shows that the developers of the world hate Internet Explorer? A link explaining why developers do not like Internet Explorer? After the answers, I'm thinking of making a great slide with all the necessary arguments to the company homologue firefox. And yet, published in slideshare. EDIT: Someone here must be wondering why I have not designed, also for Internet Explorer. Welllll... As the deadline for project completion is always short, I developed the project focused only on Mozilla Firefox, because the browser Mozilla Firefox most respects W3C standards (and javascript too) than Internet Explorer.

  • What are some arguments AGAINST using EntityFramework?

    The application I am currently building has been using Stored procedures and hand-crafted class models to represent database objects. Some people have suggested using Entity Framework and I am considering switching to that since I am not that far into the project. My problem is, I feel the people arguing for EF are only telling me the good side of things, not the bad side :) My main concerns are: We want Client-Side validation using DataAnnotations, and it sounds like I have to create the client-side models anyways so I am not sure that EF would save that much coding time We would like to keep the classes as small as possible when going over the network, and I have read that using EF often includes extra data that is not needed We have a complex database layer which crosses multiple databases, and I am not sure EF can handle this. We have one Common database with things like Users, StatusCodes, Types, etc and multiple instances of our main databases for different instances of the application. SELECT queries can and will query across all instances of the databases, however users can only modify objects that are in the database they are currently working on. They can switch databases without reloading the application. Object modes are very complex and there are often quite a few joins involved Arguments for EF are: Concurrency. I wouldn't have to code in checks to see if the record was updated before each save Code Generation. EF can generate partial class models and POCOs for me, however I am not positive this would really save me that much time since I think we would still need to create the client-side models for validation and some custom parsing methods. Speed of development since we wouldn't need to create the CRUD stored procedures for every database object Our current architecture consists of a WPF Service which handles database calls via parameterized Stored Procedures, POCO objects that go to/from the WCF service and the WPF client, and the WPF client itself which transforms POCOs into class Models for the purpose of Validation and DataBinding.

    This error took me a while to figure out. I was using SqlDataSource with stored procedures for SELECT and UPDATE commands. The SELECT worked fine. Then I added UPDATE command and while trying to update, I would get this error: "Procedure of function has too many arguments specified" Apparently, good guys at .NET decided it is necessary to send SELECT parameters with the UPDATE command as well. So when I was sending the required parameters to the UPDATE sp, in reality, it was also getting my SELECT parameters, and thus failing. I had to add the extra parameters in the UPDATE stored procedure and make them NULLABLE so that they are not required....phew... Here is piece of SP with unused parameters. ALTER PROCEDURE [dbo].[UpdateMaintenanceRecord]        @RecordID INT     ,@District VARCHAR(255)     ,@Location VARCHAR(255)         --UNUSED PARAMETERS     ,@MTBillTo VARCHAR(255) = NULL     ,@SerialNumber VARCHAR(255) = NULL     ,@PartNumber VARCHAR(255) = NULL Update: I was getting that error because unkowingly, I had bound the extra fields in my GridVeiw with Bind() call. I changed all the extra one's, which did not need to be in Update, to Eval() and everything works fine.

However, I don't know how to do it. With call_user_func, you can call functions with an array of arguments, but how would you call a constructor from it? I can't just pass the array of arguments to it; it must believe I've called it "normally". Thank you!

When I try to access some websites over https, the message "There is a problem with your websites security certificate" appears. Is there any way I can get WebBrowser to ignore these types of warnings? There are solutions for WebClient: How to ignore a certificate error with c# 2.0 WebClient - without the certificate But those solutions do not apply to this problem, as WebBrowser seems to ignore whatever is set in ServicePointManager.
