• Can I use two internet connections simultaneously in Windows 7?

  I have two internet connections - one via a 3G modem, and the other via wireless. The modem is faster so I normally browse with it, but it does not support torrent downloads while my wireless does. When the two are connected, my PC automatically makes every connection through the modem. Is there a way I can force a particular program, eg. uTorrent to browse through my wireless internet connection instead? Thanks.

• Stir Trek: Iron Man Edition Recap and Photos

  If you’ve noticed my blogging activity has reduced in frequency and technical content lately it’s primarily due to all of the conferences I’ve been attending, speaking at, or planning in the past few months.  This past Friday myself and six other dedicated individuals put on Stir Trek: Iron Man Edition as the culmination of a few months of hard work.  For those unfamiliar, Stir Trek is a web developer conference that was founded last year as an event to showcase content from Microsoft’s MIX conference and end the day with a private showing of the then just-released Star Trek movie.  This year’s conference expanded from 2 to 4 content tracks and upped the number of tickets from 350 to 600.  Even more amazing was the fact that we had 592 people show up day of the event for the lowest drop-off percentage of any conference I’ve been to before.   Nerd Dinner and Swag Bags     The night before Stir Trek: Iron Man Edition we hosted a nerd dinner at the Polaris Shopping mall food court with about 30 in attendance.  Nerd dinners are a great time to meet others passionate about technology and socialize before the whirlwind of the conference hits.  After the nerd dinner 20+ volunteers headed to the conference location and helped us stuff swag bags.  This in and of itself was a monumental task of putting together 600 swag bags with numerous leaflets, sponsor items, and t-shirts.  A big thanks goes out to all who assisted us that night so that we could finish in just under 2 hours instead of taking all night.  My sleep schedule also thanks you. Morning of Stir Trek     After getting a decent amount of sleep I arrived at Marcus Crosswoods theater at 6am to begin setting up for the day.  Myself and Jody Morgan were in charge of registration so we got tables set up, laid out swag bags, and organized our volunteer crew to assist with checking-in attendees.  Despite having 600+ people registration went fairly smoothly and got the day off to a great start.  I especially appreciated the 3+ cups of coffee from Crimson Cup, a local coffee shop.  For any of you that know me you’ll know that I rarely drink coffee except a few times a year when I really need the energy, so that says a lot about how good their coffee is.   Conference Starts     Once registration was completed the day kicked off with Molly Holzschlag keynoting.  Unfortunately Molly suffered from an ear infection and wasn’t able to fly so she had a virtual keynote and a session later in the day.  I was working behind the scenes on various tasks so I was only able to drop in very briefly on the keynote and rest of the morning sessions.  Throughout the day I tried to grab at least 1 or 2 pics of each presenter.  See my album below for the full set of pics.      For lunch we ordered around 150 pizzas from Mellow Mushroom, a local pizza place (notice the theme of supporting local businesses.)  Early on we were concerned about Mellow Mushroom being able to supply that many pizzas and get them delivered (still hot) to the theater, but they did an excellent job day of the event.  I wish I had gotten some pictures of the old school VW van they delivered the pizza in, but I was just a bit busy running around trying to get theaters ready for lunch.  We had attendees from last year who specifically requested that we have Mellow Mushroom supply lunch this year and I’m glad everything worked out being able to use them again.     During the afternoon I was able to attend a few sessions and hear some great content from various speakers.  It was also nice to just sit down and get off my feet for a bit.  After the last sessions the day concluded with a raffle.  There were a few logistical and technical issues that hampered our ability to smoothly conduct the raffle.  To those of you that agree the raffle wasn’t the smoothest experience I would like to say that the Stir Trek planning committee has already begun meeting to discuss ways of improving the conference for next year.  We are also accepting feedback (both positive and negative) at the following link: click here.  If you don’t wish to use the Joind In site you can also email me directly and I’ll be sure to pass along the feedback.   Iron Man 2 Movie     Last but not least, what Stir Trek event would be complete without the feature movie.  This year’s movie was Iron Man 2.  The theater had some really cool props and promotions (see pic below) for the movie.  I really enjoyed Iron Man 2, but I would recommend brushing up on the Iron Man comics and Marvel’s plans for future movies to understand some of the plot elements that come up.  Also make sure you stay through to the end of the movie credits to see a sneak peak of something special, that’s all I’ll say. • Internet is far slower in Ubuntu than Windows 7 on dual-booted machine

  Edit: I'll leave the original post as-is, but after further investigation, it appears that the problem is something to do with my wi-fi card. Speeds are normal when I connect via cable. Edit 2: Problem was solved. It was something to do with the wireless card drivers. I normally use Windows 7 on my laptop and have internet speeds that are normally about 15-20 Mb/s. I have recently dual-booted with Ubuntu 12.10, and have noticed that internet speeds are drastically slower in Ubuntu. When tested, speeds range from 0.2-2 Mb/s, although occasionally being significantly faster than that or even stopping completely for short periods of time. I've also noticed that when first booting into Ubuntu, speeds start fairly fast, and drop to incredibly slow with a few seconds to a few minutes. There's still some possibility that the issue may be with my ISP, as things seem slower than usual even in Windows, but I suspect that it is related to Ubuntu, as things are far slower in Ubuntu than in Windows. I'm wondering, what could be the cause of this? Potentially relevant information: -I've dual booted before on this machine with earlier versions of Ubuntu (different ISP at the time) with no problem. For example: Cookies - %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Cookies History - %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\History Cache - %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files However, for some reason, Internet Explorer occasionally stops using the normal locations and instead creates new folders under %TEMP% and/or %TEMP%\Low for this data. • Slow internet connection with mobile broadband

  I'm using a Huawei 156g USB stick to connect to the internet. In windows it reacts lightning fast and loads pages faster than my Ubuntu 10.10 does, It's not the connection type (HSDPA, WCDMA or gsm) it takes more time to connect, download speed seems okay (But not full speed i think) what is the matter with it? do I need to install some kind of drivers for it? I'm not behind a proxy. please help, I just searched around ask Ubuntu and nothing matched my problem :-(

Below is the configuration details: IP address: 172.19.40.16 Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0 Default gateway: 172.19.40.1 When I run the command ifconfig I don't find the IP address in inet addr: Even when I try to change the Network device to "Ethernet" in Network tools, the changes are not getting saved. I have to connect through a proxy on ubuntu, which works fine. This is not a ubuntu version related problem as i have been getting it from ubuntu 11.04. I want to know what difference is there in ubuntu and windows 7 which creates such results and how to fix it?

  If I have a wireless and a usb internet connection on my Ubuntu 12.04 as in: At the moment, Ubuntu seems to only make use of the Wired connection which is the usb connection. Is it possible to get ubuntu to use the wireless connection without unplugging the wired connection? So basically, as will, I would like to switch between the connections without unplugging any of them while leaving them both enabled. Is this possible?

  So Microsoft has stated that Internet Explorer 9, the first version of IE with wide support for HTML5 (including CSS3), will not be available on Windows XP. Given that Windows XP is still the dominant PC operating system, are web developers doomed to a prolonged future of supporting another inferior (in terms of supported features) yet stubborn browser. Does the fact that Microsoft will support XP until April of 2014 and will never support IE9 on XP mean that IE8 will be the dominant browser for the next three years?

• What is the default value for Empty Temporary Internet Files when browser is closed in IE8?

  We have four different machines that all have "Empty Temporary Internet Files when browser is closed" set to true (checked) in IE8's Internet Options (located under the Security section in the Advanced tab). No one remembers checking that checkbox to turn on the setting. What is the default value supposed to be? I'm specifically interested in Windows 7 and Windows XP. I have run rsop.msc on one of the corporate machines—3 of the 4 are members of a corporate network/domain—and see this under User Configuration, which makes the current scenario seem even stranger: The Local Group Policy Editor (gpedit.msc) also shows the Configure Delete Browsing History on exit setting to be Not configured (under Computer ConfigurationAdministrative TemplatesWindows ComponentsInternet ExplorerDelete Browsing History).

  Internet Explorer is often decried as the worst browser for web developers, but IE8 actually offers a very nice set of developer tools.  Here we’ll look at a unique way to use them to edit the text on any webpage. How to edit text in a webpage IE8’s developer tools make it easy to make changes to a webpage and view them directly.  Simply browse to the webpage of your choice, and press the F12 key on your keyboard.  Alternately, you can click the Tools button, and select Developer tools from the list. This opens the developer tools.  To do our editing, we want to select the mouse button on the toolbar “Select Element by Click” tool. Now, click on any spot of the webpage in IE8 that you want to edit.  Here, let’s edit the footer of Google.com.  Notice it places a blue box around any element you hover over to make it easy to choose exactly what you want to edit. In the developer tools window, the element you selected before is now highlighted.  Click the plus button beside that entry if the text you want to edit is not visible.   Now, click the text you wish to change, and enter what you wish in the box.  For fun, we changed the copyright to say “©2010 Microsoft”. Go back to IE to see the changes on the page! You can also change a link on a page this way: Or you can even change the text on a button: Here’s our edited Google.com: This may be fun for playing a trick on someone or simply for a funny screenshot, but it can be very useful, too.  You could test how changes in fontsize would change how a website looks, or see how a button would look with a different label.  It can also be useful when taking screenshots.  For instance, if I want to show a friend how to do something in Gmail but don’t want to reveal my email address, I could edit the text on the top right before I took the screenshot.  Here I changed my Gmail address to [email protected]. • Hide horizontal scrollbar in IE 7 and below

  Hi all. Basically, I'm having trouble removing the horizontal scrollbar in Internet Explorer 7 and Below. I've tried the code below and It seems to work fine in every browser except IE. overflow-x: hidden; The even bigger problem is that, even though the scrollbar isn't even removed, it seems to completely screw the layout.. It somehow hides the majority of the page content in boxes 2 and 3? It also.. adds a second vertical scrollbar which moves relatively/absolute positioned items down?! I did contemplate just leaving the scrollbar in IE via a specified stylesheet, but even that seems to be messing with the page? The website is on a test directory here.. I'll post the stylesheet in a comment below. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance, hope you can help! Bradley

• Internet Explorer and margins

  Hi there. I have some pretty simple html which is meant to make a layout as below. To push the tabs down from the userbar I am using margin-top: 35px; However in internet explorer the tabs are completly misaligned(the top of the tabs is where the bottom should be). So I need to use margin-top: -50px; for internet explorer. • Wireless Connected But No Internet Connection (Ubuntu 12.04)

  I am using same network for 2 days and everything was normal. However, today even though it shows me as connected to the network, I do not have internet connection. If I use ethernet cable instead of wireless, I am still able to connect to the internet. Also my friends are able to connect to the wireless network and they can get internet connection. I did not update or install anything since yesterday. Therefore I do not have any idea why it is happening. • Internet problems

  I have a strange problem. When I copy/paste via ethernet everything is working fine. But when I go to youtube or downloading some files via internet, connection is freezing very often. Just stop downloading and after few minutes continue and than again stop and etc... Could it be hardware problem with network card or motherboard (network is integrated on board)? I am using Ubuntu 14.04 but it happens on live cd distribution of Mint. There is no restrictions cose when I using on same switch my other laptop with linux installed everything working fine.

  As mentioned in title, Internet stops working on my PC after heavy downloading, video/audio streaming etc. There are no errors, no disconnections etc. Simply after some time (certain amount of data downloaded) I can't get any more. If I try using ping afterwards nothing happens. If ping is running simultaneously with streaming/downloading I get some correct responses and then it keeps showing an error. What helps is re-plugging my Pentagram USB wifi card, but I hope there is a better solution. Edit: One more thing: my friend who works in IT suggested that it might have something to do with cache (DNS cache? I don't remember him specifying) getting filled while it should be emptied automatically.

Also app in question being 3rd-party - there's no way to change it's own CSS files. Is there a way to use per domain injected custom CSS in internet Explorer. Let's say I want to change the background-color of domain http://oldapp.localintranet/ - is there any way to make this happen? Place to put a custom.css-file? With an add-on/extension?

  I use GSM onnection to surfe internet. Before I move to ubuntu I used windows 7 OS. It gives me good speed with GSM connection (100 kbps) But now ubuntu gives me very slow speed.(2-3 kbps) Now it make difficult to use GSM connection. In my country (Sri Lanka) mobile brodbrand servises are very expensive so I cant move to onother one. If I use GSM connection they gives me free data (Airtel connection) So it is most valuable reason for me to use GSM connection. Please anybody help me to speed up my network. Thanx

• Cannot connect to Internet after using Windows XP on dual booted machine

  I have a dual booted Windows XP and Ubuntu 10.10 box (AMD64) and have an unusual problem in that after connecting to the internet on Windows I cannot connect using Ubuntu. I don't believe it is actually a problem with configuring my Ubuntu connections because when I get up in the morning Ubuntu connects without any problem - this problem only exists (and persists for at least several hours) if I try to connect using Ubuntu immediately after connecting using Windows. I don't know how long the problem actually lasts because I usually just go to bed and then in the morning I can connect without problems. It is not problem with my provider's service as I have a second Ubuntu 10.10 box which I manually connect and works even when the dual booted one (on Ubuntu) won't. It is a particular problem with the dual booted box. A power down reset does not solve the problem.

  I've sony vaio vpceb24en laptop, I'm using dual boot system with windows 7 and ubuntu. Firstly I installed ubuntu 10.04 LTS then upgraded to 12.04 & 12.04.1 afterwards. I have mts mblaze dongle. I have set up the mts connection profile under the mobile broadband. My problem is : Sometimes my connection is easily made & I use it, sometime it never connects. So I have to restart my system then it connects to internet sometimes. But now it's not connecting even I restarted my system many times, just it shows trying to connect icon once, then never tries to connect. while in windows it's working fine. • Wireless internet sharing stops working after client disconnects

  I'm running Unbuntu 11.10 with the latest service packs, sharing an ether connection over wireless. Everything works fine, up to the point that the client (a laptop) sleeps or otherwise disconnects. The wireless connection at that point no longer functions, not showing up when searching for the hotspot with the laptop. The only way to recover is to reboot the machine, or toggle the wireless share off/on. I've double checked the wireless card has power management off. Currently what I'm doing is keeping an Ipod plugged into the box 24/7 to keep the wireless connection up when the laptop disconnects. I've searched the internet far and wide, found many issues with wireless problems after an ubuntu box itself sleeps, but nothing directly related to my problem. Hoping someone has some idea of where to look and what to check. A girl needs her Ipod back!

  I received a software update for Ubuntu 12.10 while using Zorin OS6 wireless. I accepted the update and installed 12.10. Please tell me the step by step, using layman's terms, on how to get Google Chrome, or Mozilla Firefox to connect to the Internet? I am receiving DNS server error with both browsers. I can connect to my router wired or wireless. I posted and received initial information but was not sure exactly what some of the terms were and or what to do next etc. I am not necessarily familiar with some technical terms, or do I need to install additional plug-ins? I do not know what proxy or DCHP means or what do with these terms please, please help. I am not a programmer, nor do I work in IT. Again please help.

• Connman not connecting to internet

  I wanted to try connman as I heard it will be replacing network manager. I kinda liked its looks and feel but the problem is I donot get connected to internet. I am using ADSL and it connects to my adsl router but doesnot ping google or any other sites. I tried to change the default gateway as well as use static ips but to no avail.
