  • Regular Expressions Cookbook Ebook Deal of the Day

    - by Jan Goyvaerts
Every day O’Reilly has an “ebook deal of the day” offering one or a bunch of their books in electronic format for only $9.99. Twice this year I received an email from O’Reilly notifying me that Regular Expressions Cookbook was on sale. But each time the email was sent on the morning of the day itself. When it’s morning in California it’s already bedtime for me here in Thailand. So I never saw the emails until the next day, making it rather pointless to blog about the deal. But this time O’Reilly has listened to my request for advance notification. I just got an email this morning saying Regular Expressions Cookbook will be part of the Ebook Deal of the Day for 15 September 2010. That’s 15 September on the US west coast. When I write this there’s a few hours to go before the deal starts at one past midnight California time. You can get any O’Reilly Cookbook as an ebook for only $9.99. The normal price for Regular Expressons Cookbook as an ebook is $31.99. The download includes the book in PDF, ePub, Mobi (for Kindle), DAISY, and Android formats.

  • Second Edition of Regular Expressions Cookbook Now In Stock at Amazon.com

    - by Jan Goyvaerts
%COOKBOOKFRAME% The second edition of Regular Expressions Cookbook is now in stock as a printed book Amazon.com. Right now, the printed book is discounted 45% to $27.51, which is actually more than a dollar cheaper than the Kindle edition. The European Amazon sites don’t have the printed book in stock yet. But it shouldn’t take too long for the book to make it from the US to Europe. They do have the Kindle edition.

  • Regular Expressions Cookbook Code Samples

    - by Jan Goyvaerts
%COOKBOOKFRAME% One of the common criticisms against the first edition was that we didn’t have the regular expressions and code samples available for download. Since our book only has very short code snippets rather than complete programs, we (the authors) did not have these available as separate files either. But for the second edition we’re trying to do better. You can now download the code samples from the 2nd edition of Regular Expressions Cookbook. This HTML file contains all the blocks with regular expressions and source code from the book, along with the titles of the chapters, recipes, and sections that they are found in. If you have purchased the book, you can use this file to easily copy and paste the regular expressions and source code snippets. Even if you purchased the ebook, you may prefer to use this file. The regexes in the ebook are formatted with line breaks and gray dots for spaces to make them easier to read in print. The HTML file does not use such formatting, so you can copy and paste them directly. This means that some very regexes will run beyond the edge of your browser window.

  • PerlRegEx vs RegularExpressionsCore Delphi Units

    - by Jan Goyvaerts
The RegularExpressionsCore unit that is part of Delphi XE is based on the latest class-based PerlRegEx unit that I developed. Embarcadero only made a few changes to the unit. These changes are insignificant enough that code written for earlier versions of Delphi using the class-based PerlRegEx unit will work just the same with Delphi XE. The unit was renamed from PerlRegEx to RegularExpressionsCore. When migrating your code to Delphi XE, you can choose whether you want to use the new RegularExpressionsCore unit or continue using the PerlRegEx unit in your application. All you need to change is which unit you add to the uses clause in your own units. Indentation and line breaks in the code were changed to match the style used in the Delphi RTL and VCL code. This does not change the code, but makes it harder to diff the two units. Literal strings in the unit were separated into their own unit called RegularExpressionsConsts. These strings are only used for error messages that indicate bugs in your code. If your code uses TPerlRegEx correctly then the user should not see any of these strings. My code uses assertions to check for out of bounds parameters, while Embarcadero uses exceptions. Again, if you use TPerlRegEx correctly, you should never get any assertions or exceptions. The Compile method raises an exception if the regular expression is invalid in both my original TPerlRegEx component and Embarcadero’s version. If your code allows the user to provide the regular expression, you should explicitly call Compile and catch any exceptions it raises so you can tell the user there is a problem with the regular expression. Even with user-provided regular expressions, you shouldn’t get any other assertions or exceptions if your code is correct. Note that Embarcadero owns all the rights to their RegularExpressionsCore unit. Like all the other RTL and VCL units, this unit cannot be distributed by myself or anyone other than Embarcadero. I do retain the rights to my original PerlRegEx unit which I will continue to make available for those using older versions of Delphi.

  • XRegExp Regular Expression Library for JavaScript

    - by Jan Goyvaerts
XRegExp is an open source JavaScript library. It extends JavaScript’s regex syntax with features such as free-spacing, named capture, mode modifiers, and Unicode categories, blocks, and scripts. It also provides its own test(), exec(), forEach(), replace(), and split() methods that eliminate most cross-browser inconstencies and bugs. Anyone using non-trivial regexes in their JavaScript code should seriously consider using XRegExp. Last month’s update of the Regular-Expressions.info website added full coverage of XRegExp to the regex tutorial and regex reference sections. But the tools & languages section was missing the XRegExp page, resulting in broken links in the tutorial and reference sections. This page has now been added.

  • My first Windows Phone 7 App: Getting SharePoint Content

    - by Jan Tielens
Earlier this week at the Mix10 conference, Microsoft announced the developer story of the Windows Phone 7 Series. As expected, it’s all about Silverlight! For all the details I highly recommend to watch the recorded keynotes (day 1, day 2). Tonight I could resist trying to build my very first Windows Phone 7 application; the traditional Hello World thingy. Because the developer tools (Visual Studio 2010 and the free Visual Studio 2010 Express) have pretty nice templates, that wasn’t much of a challenge. So I tried to build something real: an application that can display SharePoint 2010 content, for example items from an announcements list. I head to work my way around some limitations because both SharePoint 2010 and the developer tools are still in beta and CTP, but finally I got it working! Because of the many workarounds, the code is not yet ready for publication, but I’ve created a small screencast so you can see the result. To be continued! :-) Windows Phone 7 POC: Getting SharePoint Data from Jan Tielens on Vimeo.

  • Ubuntu 12.04 won't shut down - stopping winbind daemon

    - by jan
My Precise Pangolin sometimes won't shut down - the screen is black with text on it. Mostly last line says something like "stopping winbind deamon" (sometimes also virtualbox, which is above winbind daemon; edit: sometimes the last line says "running unattended updates") and it stays like this for about ten miutes. Then I usually hold the power button for 5s to shut it down. It's very unpredictable - sometimes the computer shuts down without problem and sometimes it hangs. I've tried many ways to shut it down: HW button, panel applet, sudo shutdown -h now, sudo poweroff, sudo halt, etc. even sudo reboot or restart from panel applet have this problem. Sometimes it works ok but every method named hung at least once on the same (damned) line. My specs: FUJITSU SIEMENS LIFEBOOK E8310, Intel Core2 Duo T7300 @ 2.00GHz, 3GB RAM, GPU: Mobile Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset Family Ubuntu 12.04.2 32bit, 3.5.0-41-generic kernel (but it did it on older kernels and 12.04.x systems too). Any ideas what should I try next? Thanks a lot! Jan

  • Using dd-wrt Dynamic DNS client with CloudFlare

    - by Roman
I'm trying to configure Dynamic DNS client on my router with dd-wrt (v24-sp2) firmware so it would dynamically change IP address in one of the DNS records. Unfortunately I encountered a problem… Here is an example request from their ddclient configuration: https://www.cloudflare.com/api.html?a=DIUP&u=<my_login>&tkn=<my_token>&ip=<my_ip>&hosts=<my_record> It works if I use it in browser, but in dd-wrt I get this output: Tue Jan 24 00:36:47 2012: INADYN: Started 'INADYN Advanced version 1.96-ADV' - dynamic DNS updater. • Tuning Linux IP routing parameters -- secret_interval and tcp_mem

    - by Jeff Atwood
We had a little failover problem with one of our HAProxy VMs today. When we dug into it, we found this: Jan 26 07:41:45 haproxy2 kernel: [226818.070059] __ratelimit: 10 callbacks suppressed Jan 26 07:41:45 haproxy2 kernel: [226818.070064] Out of socket memory Jan 26 07:41:47 haproxy2 kernel: [226819.560048] Out of socket memory Jan 26 07:41:49 haproxy2 kernel: [226822.030044] Out of socket memory Which, per this link, apparently has to do with low default settings for net.ipv4.tcp_mem. So we increased them by 4x from their defaults (this is Ubuntu Server, not sure if the Linux flavor matters): current values are: 45984 61312 91968 new values are: 183936 245248 367872 After that, we started seeing a bizarre error message: Jan 26 08:18:49 haproxy1 kernel: [ 2291.579726] Route hash chain too long! Jan 26 08:18:49 haproxy1 kernel: [ 2291.579732] Adjust your secret_interval! Shh.. it's a secret!! This apparently has to do with /proc/sys/net/ipv4/route/secret_interval which defaults to 600 and controls periodic flushing of the route cache The secret_interval instructs the kernel how often to blow away ALL route hash entries regardless of how new/old they are. In our environment this is generally bad. The CPU will be busy rebuilding thousands of entries per second every time the cache is cleared. However we set this to run once a day to keep memory leaks at bay (though we've never had one). While we are happy to reduce this, it seems odd to recommend dropping the entire route cache at regular intervals, rather than simply pushing old values out of the route cache faster. After some investigation, we found /proc/sys/net/ipv4/route/gc_elasticity which seems to be a better option for keeping the route table size in check: gc_elasticity can best be described as the average bucket depth the kernel will accept before it starts expiring route hash entries. This will help maintain the upper limit of active routes. We adjusted elasticity from 8 to 4, in the hopes of the route cache pruning itself more aggressively. The secret_interval does not feel correct to us. But there are a bunch of settings and it's unclear which are really the right way to go here. /proc/sys/net/ipv4/route/gc_elasticity (8) /proc/sys/net/ipv4/route/gc_interval (60) /proc/sys/net/ipv4/route/gc_min_interval (0) /proc/sys/net/ipv4/route/gc_timeout (300) /proc/sys/net/ipv4/route/secret_interval (600) /proc/sys/net/ipv4/route/gc_thresh (?) rhash_entries (kernel parameter, default unknown?) We don't want to make the Linux routing worse, so we're kind of afraid to mess with some of these settings. Can anyone advise which routing parameters are best to tune, for a high traffic HAProxy instance?

  • Upstart multiple instances of service not working

    - by Dax
I started playing with MongoDB on Lucid. Now I would like to run a DB and Config server on the same box. They both use the same binary to launch, but with different config files and running on different ports. All directories for log and lib is split so one goes to mongodb and the other to mongoconf. Each process can be started without any problems on their own. start mongodb stop mongodb start mongoconf stop mongoconf But if I try to start both, the second one would just start and exit. Using 'initctl log-priority debug' I got the following in the logs. Jan 6 12:44:12 mongo4 init: event_finished: Finished started event Jan 6 12:44:12 mongo4 init: job_process_handler: Ignored event 1 (1) for process 5690 Jan 6 12:44:12 mongo4 init: mongoconf (mongoconf) main process (5690) terminated with status 1 Jan 6 12:44:12 mongo4 init: mongoconf (mongoconf) goal changed from start to stop Jan 6 12:44:12 mongo4 init: mongoconf (mongoconf) state changed from running to stopping man 5 init shows that you can use instance names to differentiate the two. I tried using 'instance mongoconf' in the on upstart script and 'instance mongodb' in the other one, and it still fails. I can manually start the other process, so there is definitely no conflicts on port numbers or directories. Any ideas on what to try or how to get output on why it is 'terminated with status 1'? Thanx

  • Fast extraction of a time range from syslog logfile?

    - by mike
I've got a logfile in the standard syslog format. It looks like this, except with hundreds of lines per second: Jan 11 07:48:46 blahblahblah... Jan 11 07:49:00 blahblahblah... Jan 11 07:50:13 blahblahblah... Jan 11 07:51:22 blahblahblah... Jan 11 07:58:04 blahblahblah... It doesn't roll at exactly midnight, but it'll never have more than two days in it. I often have to extract a timeslice from this file. I'd like to write a general-purpose script for this, that I can call like: $ timegrep 22:30-02:00 /logs/something.log ...and have it pull out the lines from 22:30, onward across the midnight boundary, until 2am the next day. There are a few caveats: I don't want to have to bother typing the date(s) on the command line, just the times. The program should be smart enough to figure them out. The log date format doesn't include the year, so it should guess based on the current year, but nonetheless do the right thing around New Year's Day. I want it to be fast -- it should use the fact that the lines are in order to seek around in the file and use a binary search. Before I spend a bunch of time writing this, does it already exist?

  • Having problem with C++ file handling

    - by caramel1991
Our lecturer has given us a task,I've attempted it and try every single effort I can,but I still struggle with one of the problem in it,here goes the question: The company you work at receives a monthly report in a text format. The report contains the following information. • Department Name • Head of Department Name • Month • Minimum spending of the month • Maximum spending of the month Your program is to obtain the name of the input file from the user. Implement a structure to represent the data: Once the file has been read into your program, print out the following statistics for the user: • List which department has the minimum spending per month by month • List which department has the minimum spending by month by month Write the information into a file called “MaxMin.txt” Then do a processing so that the Department Name, Head of Department Name, Minimum spending and Maximum spending are written to separate files based on the month, eg Jan, Feb, March and so on. and of course our lecturer does send us a text file with the content: Engineering Bill Jan 2000 15000 IT Jack Jan 300 20000 HR Jill Jan 1500 10000 Engineering Bill Feb 5000 45000 IT Jack Feb 4500 7000 HR Jill Feb 5600 60000 Engineering Bill Mar 5000 45000 IT Jack Mar 4500 7000 HR Jill Mar 5600 60000 Engineering Bill Apr 5000 45000 IT Jack Apr 4500 7000 HR Jill Apr 5600 60000 Engineering Bill May 2000 15000 IT Jack May 300 20000 HR Jill May 1500 10000 Engineering Bill Jun 2000 15000 IT Jack Jun 300 20000 HR Jill Jun 1500 10000 and here's the c++ code I've written ue#include include include using namespace std; struct Record { string depName; string head; string month; float max; float min; string name; }myRecord[19]; int main () { string line; ofstream minmax, jan, feb, mar, apr, may, jun; char a[50]; char b[50]; int i = 0,j,k; float temp; //float maxjan=myRecord[0].max,maxfeb=myRecord[0].max,maxmar=myRecord[0].max,maxapr=myRecord[0].max,maxmay=myRecord[0].max,maxjune=myRecord[0].max; float minjan=myRecord[1].min,minfeb=myRecord[1].min,minmar=myRecord[1].min,minapr=myRecord[1].min,minmay=myRecord[1].min,minjune=myRecord[1].min; float maxjan=0,maxfeb=0,maxmar=0,maxapr=0,maxmay=0,maxjune=0; //float minjan=0,minfeb=0,minmar=0,minapr=0,minmay=0,minjune=0; string maxjanDep,maxfebDep,maxmarDep,maxaprDep,maxmayDep,maxjunDep; string minjanDep,minfebDep,minmarDep,minaprDep,minmayDep,minjunDep; cout<<"Enter file name: "; cina; ifstream myfile (a); //minmax.open ("MaxMin.txt"); if (myfile.is_open()){ while (! myfile.eof()){ myfilemyRecord[i].depNamemyRecord[i].headmyRecord[i].monthmyRecord[i].minmyRecord[i].max; cout << myRecord[i].depName<<"\t"< cout<<"Enter file name: "; cinb; ifstream myfile1 (b); minmax.open ("MaxMin.txt"); jan.open ("Jan.txt"); feb.open ("Feb.txt"); mar.open ("March.txt"); apr.open ("April.txt"); may.open ("May.txt"); jun.open ("Jun.txt"); if (myfile1.is_open()){ while (! myfile1.eof()){ myfile1myRecord[i].depNamemyRecord[i].headmyRecord[i].monthmyRecord[i].minmyRecord[i].max; if (myRecord[i].month == "Jan"){ jan<< myRecord[i].depName<<"\t"< if (maxjan< myRecord[i].max){ maxjan=myRecord[i].max; maxjanDep=myRecord[i].depName;} //if (minjan myRecord[i].min){ // minjan=myRecord[i].min; //minjanDep=myRecord[i].depName; //} for (k=1;k<=3;k++){ for (j=0;j<2;j++){ if (myRecord[j].minmyRecord[j+1].min){ temp=myRecord[j].min; myRecord[j].min=myRecord[j+1].min; myRecord[j+1].min=temp; minjanDep=myRecord[j].depName; }}} } if (myRecord[i].month == "Feb"){ feb<< myRecord[i].depName<<"\t"< //if (minfebmyRecord[i].min){ //minfeb=myRecord[i].min; //minfebDep=myRecord[i].depName; //} for (k=1;k<=3;k++){ for (j=0;j<2;j++){ if (myRecord[j].minmyRecord[j+1].min){ temp=myRecord[j].min; myRecord[j].min=myRecord[j+1].min; myRecord[j+1].min=temp; minfebDep=myRecord[j+1].depName; }}} } if (myRecord[i].month == "Mar"){ mar<< myRecord[i].depName<<"\t"< if (myRecord[i].month == "Apr"){ apr<< myRecord[i].depName<<"\t"< if (minaprmyRecord[i].min){ minapr=myRecord[i].min; minaprDep=myRecord[i].min;} } if (myRecord[i].month == "May"){ may< if (minmaymyRecord[i].min){ minmay=myRecord[i].min; minmayDep=myRecord[i].depName;} } if (myRecord[i].month == "Jun"){ jun<< myRecord[i].depName<<"\t"< if (minjunemyRecord[i].min){ minjune=myRecord[i].min; minjunDep=myRecord[i].depName;} } i++; myfile.close(); } minmax<<"department that has maximum spending at jan "< else{ cout << "Unable to open file"< } sorry inside that code ue#include should has iostream along with another two #include fstream and string, but at here it was treated as html tag,so i can't type it. my problem here is,I can't seems to get the minimum spending,I've try all I can but I'm still lingering on it,any idea??THANK YOU!

  • Apple New Year alarm bug cause

As many people know, Apple has a bug in their iPhone that prevented alarms from going off at 1st and 2nd of January 2011. What is strange is how that bug might happen - i.e., as far as I know this bug happens in all timezones and nobody is switching off DST on Jan 1st, so it's not timezone or DST-related. Also, Jan 1st seems to be nothing special as a UNIX timestamp, so something like sign change or integer overflow can't be the reason. It is highly improbably that alarm code has something like if(date == JANUARY_1_2011 || date == JANUARY_2_2011) turn_alarms_off(); - that would be a sabotage and not a bug. So the question is - could you imagine and describe a bug that would cause the alarm to fail exactly at Jan 1st and 2nd everywhere while letting it work otherwise, without specifically referring to those exact dates? Of course, if somebody knows the real cause, that would be a definite answer, but if nobody knows it - I think it is interesting to think what might be the cause of such strange bug.

  • Significant number of non-HTTP requests hitting my site

    - by Mark Westling
I'm seeing a significant number of non-HTTP requests hitting a site I just launched. They show up in the server (nginx) logs as non-ASCII and get rejected (correctly) with a 400 status. Here are some lines from the log: 95.132.198.189 - - [09/Jan/2011:13:53:30 -0500] "œ$A\x10õœ²É9J" 400 173 "-" "-" 79.100.145.126 - - [09/Jan/2011:13:57:42 -0500] "#§i²¸oYi á¹„\x13VJ—x·—œ\x04N \x1DÔvbÛè½\x10§¬\x1E0œ_^¼+\x09ÜÅ\x08DÌÃiJeT€¿æ]œr\x1EëîyIÐ/ßýúê5Ǹ" 400 173 "-" "-" 79.100.145.126 - - [09/Jan/2011:13:58:33 -0500] "¯Ú%ø=Œ›D@\x12¼\x1C†ÄÀe\x015mˆàd˜Û%pÛÿ" 400 173 "-" "-" What should I make of this? Is this some sort of scripted attack? Or could these be correct requests that have somehow been garbled? They're not affecting the performance of the site and I'm not seeing any other signs of attacks (e.g., no strange POSTs) so at this point I'm more curious than afraid.

  • Problems with DNS propagation 10 days after a change was made

    - by runlevel6
The engineering team I work with has been in the process of moving equipment from one datacenter to another. Ten days ago we moved one of our name servers authoritative for our client's domains (ns1.faithhiway.com) and updated its IP address with its respective DNS provider (register.com) to point to the new datacenter. All tests done show that this name server is correctly running at its new location and when queried, returning the correct response for any domains it is responsible for. The problem is that well after 72 hours had gone by we were still seeing more DNS activity at its old IP address than at the new. The good news is that we kept a name server responding on the old IP address for the time being so we are not seeing any issues with the domains our nameserver is responsible for but the goal is to retire that as soon as possible. As you can see from WhatsMyDNS.net, a decent amount of propagation has occurred over the last 10 days since we made this change, but still there are some locations reporting our original IP. Considering that the TTL is only 3600 with the name servers responsible for this domain, it does not make any sense to myself or the other engineers working with me that we are having this issue. Now if I run a DNS check using one of the Register.com DNS servers (direct nameservers for faithhiway.com), I get the following (correct) result: # dig @dns01.gpn.register.com ns1.faithhiway.com A ; <<>> DiG 9.3.6-P1-RedHat-9.3.6-4.P1.el5_5.3 <<>> @dns01.gpn.register.com. ns1.faithhiway.com A ; (1 server found) ;; global options: printcmd ;; Got answer: ;; ->>HEADER<<- opcode: QUERY, status: NOERROR, id: 43232 ;; flags: qr aa; QUERY: 1, ANSWER: 1, AUTHORITY: 5, ADDITIONAL: 5 ;; QUESTION SECTION: ;ns1.faithhiway.com. But a few (OpenDNS and SpeakEasy in the examples above) are still showing the old IP address. Considering the length of time that has gone by, it seems obvious to me that either we have made a mistake and not thoroughly handled the DNS changes on our end (likely) or there is a problem with either the DNS provider for this domain (Register) or with some of the DNS servers out in the wild (rather unlikely). Any advice on how I can proceed with this? UPDATE (January 31, 2011): First of all, I apologize for the length of both the original question and this update. I contemplated removing some of the excess from the original post but just in case this problem and its solution are helpful to someone else in the future I'm just going to leave everything as it is. Anyway, I've been doing some more research into this problem, and have discovered the following interesting occurrence. While running a check on the glue records for faithhiway.com always resolve correctly, if I go and check a client domain (where ns1.faithhiway.com is authoritative), I get a strange response. It looks like the root servers are returning nsX.faithhiway.com as their old IP addresses still (under Additional Section). Because we have a server still there responding to DNS queries, the trace finishes and returns the correct IP addresses as the final step (again, under Additional Section). The example below uses one of the domains that we use that uses ns1.faithhiway.com as its authoritative DNS server. # dig +trace +nosearch +all +norecurse ignitemail.com ; <<>> DiG 9.2.4 <<>> +trace +nosearch +all +norecurse ignitemail.com ;; global options: printcmd ;; Got answer: ;; ->>HEADER<<- opcode: QUERY, status: NOERROR, id: 46856 ;; flags: qr ra; QUERY: 1, ANSWER: 13, AUTHORITY: 0, ADDITIONAL: 0 ;; QUESTION SECTION: ;. • Excel VBA - How to copy/transpose multiple columns record into individual single row

    - by larry
I'm working on data migration, need some help on doing a macro to copy/transpose multiple columns record into individual single row. There are also a "tag" in the first row, which indicates the columns that should not be included in the copy/transpose. From: Tag x Name Jan Feb Mar Apr Larry 2 20 34 56 Harry 3 45 77 88 Marry 5 66 44 33 To: Larry Jan 2 Larry Feb 20 Larry Apr 56 Harry Jan 3 Harry Feb 45 Harry Apr 88 Marry Jan 5 Marry Feb 66 Marry Apr 33 The "Mar" data was omitted due to there's a tag (X) above it. The data might be near hundred columns (few years), and some of the months need to be omitted. Any expert able to help on this? I had been spending whole day cracking my head on this. Worse come to worse I might have to manually copy and paste, that would probably took me a decade.

  • Jasper Reports - Add one day to a Date Parameter

    - by Templar
I'm creating a Jasper report that includes the following parameters: DATESTART (Date) DATEEND (Date) These parameters indicate a date range for a field called DATECREATED (Timestamp) which includes times. I would like the date range to be INCLUSIVE, that is, if I filter for "Jan 1, 2009" to "Jan 31, 2009", any DATECREATED value on Jan 31, 2009 (such as "Jan 31, 2009 15:00") will be included in the report. When I used Crystal Reports in the past, I used the DATEADD function to create a filter expression like the following: {DATECREATED} >= {DATESTART} and {DATECREATED} < DATEADD("d", 1, {DATEEND}) (I realize that this isn't syntactically correct, but you get the idea.) Is there any way to do something similar in Jasper Reports?
