• Plans for Java 7 and E-Business Suite Certification

  As of June 2012, Java 7 has not been certified yet with Oracle E-Business Suite.  EBS customers should continue to run JRE 6 on their Windows end-user desktops, and JDK 6 on their EBS servers. Our plans for certifying Java 7 for the E-Business Suite We plan on releasing the Java 7 certification for E-Business Suite customers in two phases: Phase 1: Certify JRE 7 for Windows end-user desktops Phase 2: Certify JDK 7 for server-based components When will Java 7 be certified with EBS? We're working on the first phase now. As usual, I cannot discuss release dates here, but you can monitor or subscribe to this blog for updates. Current known issues with JRE 7 in EBS environments Our current testing shows that there are known incompatibilities between JRE 7 and the Forms-invocation process in EBS environments.  We have been working directly with the Java division on this for a while now.  In the meantime, EBS customers should not deploy JRE 7 to their end-user Windows desktop clients. You should stick with JRE 1.6 for now.  But wait, you previously said... Older JRE certification announcements stated: Our standard policy is that all E-Business Suite customers can apply all JRE updates to end-user desktops from JRE 1.6.0_03 and higher.  We test all new JRE releases in parallel with the JRE development process, so all JRE releases are considered certified with the E-Business Suite on the same day that they're released by our Java team.  You do not need to wait for a certification announcement before applying new JRE releases to your EBS users' desktops. Yes, this is true.  This standard boilerplate text was written before JRE 7 was released, so there was no possibility of misunderstanding.  With the availability of JRE 7, that boilerplate needs to be revised to read: Our standard policy is that all E-Business Suite customers can apply all JRE updates to end-user desktops from JRE 1.6.0_03 and later updates on the 1.6 codeline.  We test all new JRE 1.6 releases in parallel with the JRE development process, so all new JRE 1.6 releases are considered certified with the E-Business Suite on the same day that they're released by our Java team.  You do not need to wait for a certification announcement before applying new JRE 1.6 releases to your EBS users' desktops. • Ubuntu stops letting wired or wireless mice click through after a short while

  Hi! I have a very confusing problem that renders Ubuntu near unusable. Whenever I try to use any wired or wireless mouse with my Ubuntu 10.10 install, clicks stop going through - often times, this blockage of clicks happens in less than a minute. Sometimes no clicks are accepted, other times, clicks are accepted in certain windows and denied in others. The end result is the same, and I am forced to resort to using the keyboard to navigate. If anyone could help me resolve this problem, I would be very appreciative, as it would finally allow me to try Ubuntu. Thanks!

• Consultations with ATG Development at OpenWorld 2014

  Our OpenWorld 2014 San Francisco conference is about six weeks away.  We have a great lineup of sessions this year.  Our EBS Applications Technology track sessions are listed here, and we'll have a more-detailed article about those soon. One of the advantages of attending OpenWorld is that you can meet face-to-face with senior staff in ATG Development.  You can use these meetings to discusss your questions, requirements, plans, and deployment architectures with us. There are several options for doing this: At general sessions: collar the speaker of your choice after his or her presentation. At the Meet The Experts sessions:  these are first-come first-served round-table discussions Setting up private meetings via your Oracle account manager The last option is best if you have lots of in-depth questions or confidential details about your implementation that cannot be discussed in front of other customers.  Many of this blog's experts, including me, will be attending OpenWorld this year.  If you'd like to meet with us privately, please contact your Oracle account manager to arrange that as soon as possible.  My calendar, in particular, is already starting to fill up.  It is often completely full by the time OpenWorld starts. • AMP and ACMP 4.0 Now Available for More Platforms

  We released the latest Application Management Pack and Application Change Management Packs for Oracle E-Business Suite 4.0 for Oracle Enterprise Manager 11g earlier this year for Linux platforms.  This pair of packs is released as part of the Application Management Suite for Oracle E-Business Suite.  These two packs are also referred to as the Oracle E-Business Suite Plug-in 4.0 for OEM 11g. • When will EBS 12.2 be released?

  The most frequently asked question at OpenWorld this year was, "When will EBS 12.2 be released?" Sadly, Oracle's communication policies prohibit us from speculating about release dates for unreleased software. We are not permitted to give estimates, rough timelines, guesses, or anything else that remotely resembles specific guidance on release dates. You can monitor My Oracle Support and this blog for updates on EBS 12.2.  I'll post them here as soon as they're available.  I'm embedding an old favourite from 2007 in its entirety here, since it applies equally to new releases as well as certifications. "Loose Lips Sink Ships" (March 20, 2007)If I were to sort emails in my inbox into groups, the biggest -- by far -- would be the one for emails that start with, "When will _____ be certified with the E-Business Suite?"  I answer these dutifully but know that my replies can sometimes be maddening, for two reasons:  technical uncertainty, and Oracle's rules for such communications. On the Spiral Model of CertificationsTechnology stack certifications tend to be highly iterative in nature.  As a result, statements about certification dates tend to be accurate only when made in hindsight.  Laypeople are horrified to hear this, but it's the ugly truth.  Uncertainty is simply inherent to the process.  I've become inured to it over the years, but it might come as a surprise to you that it can take many cycles to get fully-released software to work together.  Take this scenario: We test a particular combination of Component A and B. If we encounter a problem, say, with Component A, we log a bug. We receive a new version of Component A. The process iterates again. The reality is this: until a certification is completed and released, there's no accurate way of telling how many iterations are yet to come.  This is true regardless of the number of iterations that have already been completed.  Our Lips Are SealedGenerally, people understand that things are subject to change, so the second reason I can't say anything specific is actually much more important than the first.  "Loose lips might sink ships" was coined in World War II in an effort to remind people that careless talk can have serious consequences.  Curiously, this applies to Oracle's communications about upcoming features, configurations, and releases, too.  As a publicly traded company, we have very strict policies that prohibit us from linking specific releases to specific dates.  If you've ever listened to an earnings call with analysts, you'll often hear them asking, "Can you add a little more color to that statement?"  For certifications, color is usually the only thing that I have.  Sometimes I can provide a bit more information about the technical nature of the certification in question, such as expected footprints or version levels.  I can occasionally share technical issues that we've found, too, to convey the degree of risk or complexity involved in the certification.  Aside from that, there's little additional information about specific dates, date ranges, or even speculation about dates that I can provide... that is, without having one of those uncomfortable conversations with Oracle Legal.  So, as much as it pains me to do so, when it comes to dates, I'm always forced to conclude with a generic reply that blandly states one of the following: We're working on that certification right now That certification is in the pipeline but hasn't been started yet We don't have plans for that certification Don't Shoot the MessengerThankfully, I've developed a thick skin over the years -- which is a good thing, considering the colorful and energetic responses I've received over the years after answering these questions.  However, on behalf of my Oracle colleagues who are faced with these questions every day in the field, I urge you to remember that they're required to follow these same corporate rules about date disclosures.  It never hurts to ask, but don't be too disappointed if we can't provide you with a detailed answer.  The Go-Go's had it right, after all.  Related Articles Webcast Replay Available: Technical Preview of EBS 12.2 Online Patching

• Is HTML5 more secure to develop for than Silverlight?

  I'm learning Silverlight, and I know that if I master it, I can apply the same concepts to WPF, which means I can do either web or desktop development pretty easily. But I've read articles and followed the discussion online, and I understand HTML5 is gaining traction for being cross-platform, and a lot of people seem to be moving to HTML5. From my understanding, any HTML5 application would be built with HTML and JavaScript (or Flash). But is it secure? It seems like anyone can easily use their browser's "view source" option and grab your code. Is this something I should be worried about, or is there a way to protect against it?

• Hosted EBS 11i Integration Repository Temporarily Offline

  Most developers know that they can integrate their external applications with the E-Business Suite via the business service interfaces and SOA service endpoints documented in the E-Business Suite's Integration Repository.  This is shipped as part of EBS 12.  Until recently, it was provided as a hosted environment on the Oracle.com domain for EBS 11i. Unfortunately, we identified some standards-related issues in the process of switching from the existing server that hosts the EBS 11i environment to a new one, notably in the area of accessibility. Some of those issues will require coding changes to resolve.  Given our focus on EBS 12.2 right now, it may take some time to prioritize this relative to our other existing commitments. In the meantime, we are required to suspend access to the EBS 11i Integration Repository.  I don't have a firm schedule for getting this back online yet, but you're welcome to monitor or subscribe to this blog. • How do I stop video tearing? (Nvidia prop driver, non-compositing window manager)

  I have that problem which seemingly afflicts many using the proprietary Nvidia driver: Video tearing: fine horizontal lines (usually near the top of my display) when there is a lot of panning or action in the video. (Note: switching back to the default nouveau driver is not an option, as its seemingly nonexistent power-management drains my battery several times faster) I've tried Totem, Parole, and VLC, and tearing occurs with all of them. The best result has been to use X11 output in VLC, but there is still tearing with relatively moderate action. Hardware: MacBook Air 3,2 -- which has an Nvidia GeForce 320M. There are two common fixes for tearing with Nvidia prop drivers: Turn off compositing, since Nvidia proprietary drivers don't usually play nice with compositing window managers on Linux (Compiz is an exception I'm aware of). But I use an extremely lightweight window manager (Awesome window manager) which is not even capable of compositing (or any cool effects). I also have this problem in Xfce, where I have compositing disabled. Enabling sync to VBlank. To enable this, I set the option in nvidia-settings and then autostart it as nvidia-settings -l with my other autostart programs. This seems to work, because when I run glxgears, I get: $ glxgears Running synchronized to the vertical refresh. The framerate should be approximately the same as the monitor refresh rate. 303 frames in 5.0 seconds = 60.500 FPS 300 frames in 5.0 seconds = 59.992 FPS And when I check the refresh rate using nvidia-settings: $ nvidia-settings -q RefreshRate Attribute 'RefreshRate' (wampum:0.0; display device: DFP-2): 60.00 Hz. All this suggests sync to VBlank is enabled. As I understand it, this is precisely designed to stop tearing, and a lot of people's problem is even getting something like glxgears to output the correct info. • How to learn a C++ GUI library effectively?

  Hello everyone, I have many options for GUI in my head while searching in stackoverflow, but these are what I chose among others: Qt gtkmm GTK+ I used GTK+ couple years ago, and I felt so painful when using C API without string object and containers. I prefer C++ style, I then switched to C++ gtkmm, but the documentation was bad at that time. I found no help when encountering an issue. Now I want to give a hard try for Qt4, but I really want to know how to learn a GUI librarie effectively. With core C++, I usually pick up a problem and try to solve it in different ways using that particular technique, functionality. On the other hand, after skimming through the documentation from Qt site, I don't think this way of studying is applicable, since the GUI classes and APIs are so much bigger. Plus I'm still in school, so I won't have much time to play all the day long with it. How do you guys learn GUI before? Can anyone share some experiences how they learn thing, that would be an invaluable input for me! Best regards, Chan Nguyen

• How to negate a predicate function using operator ! in C++?

  Hi, I want to erase all the elements that do not satisfy a criterion. For example: delete all the characters in a string that are not digit. • Spikes of 99% disk activity in Windows 8 Task Manager

  For some reason Windows 8's Task Manager reports spikes of 99% disk activity for hours at a time. Looking at the entries in that column, however, data doesn't seem to be getting written any more quickly than when the disk activity is around 25-50% (which it seem to idle at most of the time). Furthermore, when these 99% disk activity spikes are happening, the average response time reported in the Performance tab becomes 4000-6000ms. Is there a good way to find out what is causing the disk activity? I've tried using Process Explorer, but I said above, the rate at which data is reportedly being written doesn't seem to correspond (Dropbox and Google Chrome are constantly the top two, but the spikes are not dependent on their being open). Thanks in advance for any help. It gets very annoying when the computer stutters to a halt.

After booting into the install wizard and next-ed a few times, On the disk step, it only shows physical harddrive but not the RAID (RAID-10) volume that I set up on the Dell RAID.   I have two domains hosting in two different servers: domain1.com & domain2.com I would like to forward "blog.domain1.com" to "blog2.domain2.com" which is a Wordpress blog using CNAME redirect. Before I installed Wordpress. blog.domain1.com (=redirect=) blog2.domain2.com/index.htm (working fine) The browser will keep the URL (http://blog.domain1.com) even the index.htm is on domain2.com server. • Why is my vhosts file interfering with my apache deployment?

  When I enable my vhosts file (i.e. uncomment this line: Include /private/etc/apache2/extra/httpd-vhosts.conf) I am unable to reach localhost. I /am/ able to reach the last virtual host listed in my vhosts file: <VirtualHost *:80> DocumentRoot "/Users/achan/Sites/epwbst" ServerName epwbst </VirtualHost> <VirtualHost *:80> DocumentRoot "/Users/achan/Sites/pxproj" ServerName pxproj </VirtualHost> Typing pxproj in my browser brings up the expected web content. But I am unable to reach epwbst or localhost. If I re-comment the vhost line in my httpd.conf, I am able to reach local host (i.e. "It works!") but obviously am unable to reach my virtual hosts. I don't know how to continue troubleshooting this. Why can't I reach localhost when I've got my vhosts turned on? OS: Mac OS X 10.7 Server version: Apache/2.2.21 (Unix)

• How do I configure pfsense as an outbound VPN client?

  We use pfsense as a router/firewall. Because we're based in China, it is useful for us to have VPN access for all our internal clients. Instead of each individual client connecting to a VPN server stateside, I'd like to configure pfsense as a VPN client and have all the network traffic be routed through it. Most of the posts I've seen regarding pfsense and VPN are concerning connecting to the LAN from outside; this is not what I want to do. Another option would be for an SSH tunnel to be initiated on the pfsense box with the LAN traffic routed through it. How do I configure pfsense to be able to do either of these? One huge caveat is that OpenVPN cannot be used. The solution I am looking for needs to use one of the other VPN protocols.
