• What does the English word "for" exactly mean in "for" loops?

  English is not my first language, but since the keywords in programming languages are English words, I usually find it easy to read source code as English sentences: if (x > 10) f(); = "If variable x is greater than 10, then call function f." while (i < 10) ++i; = "While variable i is less than 10, increase i by 1." But how a for loop is supposed to be read? for (i = 0; i < 10; ++i) f(i); = ??? I mean, I know what a for loop is and how it works. My problem is only that I don't know what the English word "for" exactly means in for loops.

I have a development comming that is intended to be sold across Latin America (Spanish speakers), but I've heard from some partners that is a good practice to always code in English, I mean just code (methods, classes, pages names, etc), labels on GUI are going to be all in Spanish... Code will be edited in the future by developer of companies across Latin America and just maybe some from outside. What do you think?, any experience with this?

• Getting some French-Canadian keyboard strokes to work on English keyboard

  I'm trying to use some of the French-Canadian keyboard stokes I'm used to on an English keyboard. I would like to change the behaviour of some keys. I was able to implement these changes in Vim, but I would like them to be applied system-wide (for Windows and Ubuntu). Here's what I want to implement : If I press [a, the character printed is â. When I press [r, something that's supposed to stay normal, the characters printed are [r. If I hold [ for 3 seconds, [ is printed. I want this delay to be applied to all my modified keys. I want to map < to ' and the characters 'e to è. The complex problem here is that I only want the ' beside the ; key to produce the è character, NOT when I press the < (remapped to ') then e. • Can someone explain RAID-0 in plain English?

  I've heard about and read about RAID throughout the years and understand it theoretically as a way to help e.g. server PCs reduce the chance of data loss, but now I am buying a new PC which I want to be as fast as possible and have learned that having two drives can considerably increase the perceived performance of your machine. In the question Recommendations for hard drive performance boost, the author says he is going to RAID-0 two 7200 RPM drives together. What does this mean in practical terms for me with Windows 7 installed, e.g. can I buy two drives, go into the device manager and "raid-0 them together"? I am not a network administrator or a hardware guy, I'm just a developer who is going to have a computer store build me a super fast machine next week. I can read the wikipedia page on RAID but it is just way too many trees and not enough forest to help me build a faster PC: RAID-0: "Striped set without parity" or "Striping". Provides improved performance and additional storage but no redundancy or fault tolerance. Because there is no redundancy, this level is not actually a Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks, i.e. not true RAID. However, because of the similarities to RAID (especially the need for a controller to distribute data across multiple disks), simple strip sets are normally referred to as RAID 0. Any disk failure destroys the array, which has greater consequences with more disks in the array (at a minimum, catastrophic data loss is twice as severe compared to single drives without RAID). A single disk failure destroys the entire array because when data is written to a RAID 0 drive, the data is broken into fragments. The number of fragments is dictated by the number of disks in the array. The fragments are written to their respective disks simultaneously on the same sector. This allows smaller sections of the entire chunk of data to be read off the drive in parallel, increasing bandwidth. RAID 0 does not implement error checking so any error is unrecoverable. More disks in the array means higher bandwidth, but greater risk of data loss. So in plain English, how can "RAID-0" help me build a faster Windows-7 PC that I am going to order next week?

• PHP: Writing non-english characters to XML - encoding problem

  Hello, I wrote a small PHP script to edit the site news XML file. I used DOM to manipulate the XML (Loading, writing, editing). It works fine when writing English characters, but when non-English characters are written, PHP throws an error when trying to load the file. If I manually type non-English characters into the file - it's loaded perfectly fine, but if PHP writes the non-English characters the encoding goes wrong, although I specified the utf-8 encoding. Any help is appreciated. • Good quality voice communication software over Internet for windows

  I regularly attend over-the-phone meetings, where is a polycom/polispan device on the other side. The quality of the sound is bad, even those whose English is a first language sometimes are struggling to realize what is being said on the other side. I understand this is because of too aggressive audio compression in the line. Does anyone know any good audio chat software which does not over-compress audio stream. The IP channel between two offices is wide enough. In other words, you should be able to listen to a music (not only a speech) from the remote side with good quality. So, Skype is too over-compressing as well. Does anyone know anything like that?

I have read the wikipedia post, but still find it hard to explain the concept to none developers. "Design a database in a way not to get duplicated data" is the first thing that comes to mind. Does anyone was a nice way to explain the concept of database normalization in plain English. And what are some nice examples to show the differences between first, second and third normal forms.   I am working on a project that uses Albahari's PredicateBuilder library http://www.albahari.com/nutshell/ to create a linq expression dynamically at run time. I would like to find a way to translate this dynamically created linq predicate of type Expression<Func<T, bool>> into a readable english statement at runtime. I'll give a statically created linq statement as an example: from p in Purchases select p where p.Price 100 && p.Description != "Bike". For this linq statement I would want to dynamically generate at runtime an english description along the lines of: "You are searching for purchases where the price is greater than 100 and the description is not bike". Are there any libraries that already exist which accomplish this goal, keep in mind I am using PredicateBuilder to dynamically generate the where predicate. If no solution exists how would you go about building a solution? Thanks!

  Hello. I have a problem. file_get_contents and other file functions (like file, fopen, glob etc) not working when i try to get file with non english symbols. I getting error that file not exist. It is going when i using any of that functions from my simple drupal module. But same time when i try to use file_get_contents outside drupal's code (just created separated php file) this function work as it should. Can you advice something?? What drupal doing so i can't use file functions on file with non english name from my module? Thanks.

• Trouble Getting a Locally Hosted Copy of the English Language Wiktionary to include the Translations Sections

  I used MWDumper - http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Mwdumper - to import the xml dump of the English Language Wiktionary (specifically the file named enwiktionary-20120930-pages-meta-current.xml,) to my local server. I have found that under the Translations section (on each page for each English word,) next to the name of each language where I should be able to see the definition in a foreign language, I instead see Template:Tø, Template:T+, or Template:T- and I am not sure why this is. As an experiment, I also used WikiTaxi - http://www.yunqa.de/delphi/doku.php/products/wikitaxi/index - with the exact same XML dump and did not have this problem when viewing under WikiTaxi.exe. I have been searching through mediawiki.org looking for the answer, but have so far not been successful. I appreciate your help

• Large free block of english non-pronoun text

  As part of teaching myself python I've written a script which allows a user to play hangman. At the moment, the hangman word to be guessed is simply entered manually at the start of the script's code. I want instead for the script to choose randomly from a large list of english words. This I know how to do - my problem is finding that list of words to work from in the first place. Does anyone know of a source on the net for, say, 1000 common english words where they can be downloaded as a block of text or something similar that I can work with? (My initial thought was grabbing a chunk of a novel from project gutenburg [this project is only for my own amusement and won't be available anywhere else so copyright etc doesn't matter hugely to me btw], but anything like that is likely to contain too many names or non-standard words that wouldn't be suitable for hangman. I need text that only has words legal for use in scrabble, basically). It's a slightly odd question for here I suppose, but actually I thought the answer might be of use not just to me but anyone else working on a project for a wordgame or similar that needs a large seed list of words to work from. However, because I'm German and don't have a US bank account, iTunes only shows me the German reviews. How can I see the US ones too? Trying to switch the account in my iTunes, Apple warns me that I need a US bank account, and that I have ongoing TV series subscriptions that can't be cancelled yet... and only offers a Cancel button.

For aesthetic purposes, these names must be made shorter in some cases, adding dots (...) to indicate that the name is longer. So for example, if article.name returns this: lorem ipsum dolor sit amet I'd like to get this other output. lorem ipsum dolor ... I can program this quite easily. My question is: how should I call that shortening operation? I mean the name, not the implementation. Is there a standard English name for it?

  Hey, I'm using the AJAX FilteredTextBoxExtender, but I'm not sure how to let it accept non-english characters such as é and á. I know I can manually add these in the InvalidChar's property, but is there an easier, more practical way? When using Regex, the [\w] seems to let it through, but I'm guessing the FTBE is using another system to check for valid characters? (I know I can use the regex validator, but for UI experience, I'd like a real time input check) Thanks for any suggestions
