  • anoymous access and automatic mounting of a samba share from a windows system to a linux system

    - by The Journeyman geek
I have most of my audio files on a system shared by most of the people in my family, and i'd like to be able to get them accessable to a headless linux box i control over smb. The share(s) in question are not on a share that requires authentication (and most examples assume so), and i'd like to have them automatically mounted, and accessable on boot. I'd like to only use command line tools - so anything that has x dependancies is out, and shares should be accessable to any user on the system via a mount point OS shouldn't matter, but the "fileserver" is a windows XP system, and i can access the shares without logging in, and the client is a ubuntu 10.04 lts system with a minimal CLI install.

  • Python IOError: Not a gzipped file (Gzip and Blowfish Encrypt/Compress)

    - by notbad.jpeg
I'm having some problems with python's built-in library gzip. Looked through almost every other stack question about it, and none of them seem to work. MY PROBLEM IS THAT WHEN I TRY TO DECOMPRESS I GET THE IOError I'm Getting: Traceback (most recent call last): File "mymodule.py", line 61, in return gz.read() File "/usr/lib/python2.7/gzip.py", line 245, readself._read(readsize) File "/usr/lib/python2.7/gzip.py", line 287, in _readself._read_gzip_header() File "/usr/lib/python2.7/gzip.py", line 181, in _read_gzip_header raise IOError, 'Not a gzipped file'IOError: Not a gzipped file This is my code to send it over SMB, it might not make sense why i do things, but it's normally in a while loop and memory efficient, I just simplified it. buffer = cStringIO.StringIO(output) #output is from a subprocess call small_buffer = cStringIO.StringIO() small_string = buffer.read() #need a string to write to buffer gzip_obj = gzip.GzipFile(fileobj=small_buffer,compresslevel=6, mode='wb') gzip_obj.write(small_string) compressed_str = small_buffer.getvalue() blowfish = Blowfish.new('abcd', Blowfish.MODE_ECB) remainder = '|'*(8 - (len(compressed_str) % 8)) compressed_str += remainder encrypted = blowfish.encrypt(compressed_str) #i send it over smb, then retrieve it later Then this is the code that retrieves it: #buffer is a cStringIO object filled with data from smb retrieval decrypter = Blowfish.new('abcd', Blowfish.MODE_ECB) value = buffer.getvalue() decrypted = decrypter.decrypt(value) buff = cStringIO.StringIO(decrypted) buff.seek(0) gz = gzip.GzipFile(fileobj=buff) return gz.read() Here's the problem return gz.read()

  • Windows 8 and SMB2 Issues

    - by Rhys Paterson
We're playing with the consumer preview of Windows 8 and having issues accessing some network shares in our environment. Basically, when I attempt to access a share directly (\[SERVER].[DOMAIN].[NETWORK]\Share$) I get 'An extended error has occured'. The shares reside on an EMC Celerra system. Sorry, I don't really have much more information about it (this is just a little side project). Accessing shares that reside on Windows machines are fine. The Firewall is completley disabled and I am running under full domain administrative credentials. A quick wireshark shows the following group of packets between myself and the server: SMB2 164 NegotiateProtocol Request SMB2 274 NegotiateProtocol Response SMB2 981 SessionSetup Request SMB2 281 SessionSetup Response SMB2 200 TreeConnect Request Tree: \\[SERVER].[DOMAIN].[NETWORK]\[SHARE]$ SMB2 138 TreeConnect Response SMB2 202 Ioctl Request NETWORK_FILE_SYSTEM Function:0x0080 SMB2 131 Ioctl Response, Error: STATUS_INVALID_DEVICE_REQUEST SMB2 126 SessionLogoff Request SMB2 126 SessionLogoff Respons This repeats five times and then (I assume) Windows throws me the above error. A quick Google shows me: 0xC0000010 STATUS_INVALID_DEVICE_REQUEST The specified request is not a valid operation for the target device. Which shows me that NETWORK_FILE_SYSTEM Function:0x0080 request is invalid.. Does anyone know what would cause this? Thanks in advance. Rhys. Edit: FYI - as a workaround, you can disable SMB 2.2 as noted in the EMC thread: sc config lanmanworkstation depend= bowser/mrxsmb10/nsi sc config mrxsmb20 start= disabled This will allow the machine to access the shares. The below answer still stands though :)

  • Windows XP SP3 client over NAT to a Windows 2008 R2 SP1 file server disconnection

    - by Patrick Pellegrino
we just transferred a pilot group from our old(!!) Netware infrastructure to an Microsoft infrastructure. Since then, our users got problems accessing their files. They all experience disconnection from the mapped drives. The file server is access via a WAN connection by a firewall (Sonicwall) between both network and we do NAT. All clients have Windows XP SP3 and the file server is an Windows 2008 R2 SP1. On the file server I got many Event Id 2012. Many post over the Internet suggested a problem between the SMB protocol and NAT. We need a short term fix to continue to transfer users from Netware to Microsoft after what will work to remove the NATing. I found this MS KB http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2444558 that suggested a kind of workaround for Windows 7 clients but I can found anything for Windows XP. Anyone can help me with this ? We don't want to stop the project and do a network job before migrating. Regards. Update: Our few Windows 7 computers doesn't seem to have this issue.

  • 2000 Server, User can't logon

    - by Mike I
I hope you can help me. I recently upgraded a workstation at my office (to a whole new machine) and ran into a pretty serious problem. Friday until 5:00 PM, I could access my mail on 2000 Exchange server. When I shut the old workstation down and put in the new workstation, I tried to set up an account. When I put the server name in appropriate field and typed my username and hit check names, my username does not come up. So to troubleshoot, (It also is a SMB server) I try to logon to my file share. (My local credentials are the same as server credientials of user account) When I try to logon to share, I just get the Username/Password screen (Never had gotten that before since credentials are the same) Again, in troubleshooting mode, I try to log on to my user from another workstation. Still can't authenticate via my user. Every other user can authenticate and load up their shares/mailboxes. I have restored Exchange from the backup as of 3 days ago (Thursday) but the exact same issue is still there. I really do not understand what is wrong and what else I can do to troubleshoot. If anyone has some pointers for me, I will surely accept them. Thanks, Mike

  • Windows Server 08 R2 file share File locking, OSX clients

    - by Keith Loughnane
I've spent the last two weeks banging my head against this wall. I think I'm starting to understand the problem though. I manage a design company and they have 5 macs (OSX 10.5/.6/.7) connected over SMB to a Windows 2008 R2 file server, another machine functions as Domain Controller (that might not matter). All the macs can connect ok, no issues finding the server or logging in. For the most part things are ok. The problem is files locking up. I thought it was a permissions issue at first but it seems to be file locking. The users open a file; .ind, .pdf etc the file opens, the software reads it and closes it. That's fine, but the folder above the folder locks, it can't be moved and it can't be renamed. Eg: /Working/Project01/Imagefiles/image.pdf /Finished/ The user opens image.pdf, closes it and wants to move the whole Project01 folder into Finished. It gives a username/pass dialogue and then does nothing, no error, or just does nothing. Trying to rename gives a dialogue that says you don't have permission. It looks like it's looking for permission locally, which is why I spent about a week looking at that. Eventually I found that Finder on the macs seems to be keeping the folders open. I can work around it by Killing finder, remounting the shared drive or closing the file through the server manager but this just proves the theory it's not a solution. Has anyone dealt with this problem?

  • Accessing CIFS shares from an OS X machine incredibly slow

    - by Aron Rotteveel
This is a longshot, because this issue seems over-reported and unanswered on the internet (see references below), but it is about time this issue is permanently solved. The facts: Server: Windows Server 2008, acting as a file server Client: OS X Lion 10.7.3. Method of connecting: directly via IP through Finder: smb://192.168.1.100/share The problem: The initial connection attempt takes about a minute. After the connection is made, it takes one more minute to show the directories in Finder. After navigating to any other directory, it takes several seconds/minutes to parse the directory, seemingly based on the size of the contents. Actually, my entire Finder has this problem after connecting. When using Finder to show my desktop, it can literally take up to a minute to load. Obviously, this is not right. I have no clue how to fix this and would appreciate any help I can get. I am unsure about other relevant information I can provide, but if there is any, please let me know so I can update the post. I seem to be not the only one having this problem: Most importantly, an apple.stackexchange.com entry. Unsolved and unanswered. Several users on the Apple support forums. Users on EduGeek.

  • SMB2 traffic crashes network?

    - by Phil Cross
We've been having significant network slowdown issues over the past few weeks, primarily on a Friday morning. We run Windows 7 client machines, with Windows Server 2008 R2 servers. What generally happens is the network starts to slow down massively at 08:55 and resumes normal speeds at around 09:20 This affects everything on the network from logging on, resetting passwords, opening programs and files etc. On my client machine, Physical Memory usage remains at around 40% (normal) and CPU usage hovers around 0-10% idle. The servers show memory usage spikes massively and remains quite intense during the times mentioned above. I have taken several wireshark captures, both during the slowdown and when the network operates fine. One of the main things I noticed is the increase in SMB2 entries in the wireshark log during the slowdown. Record Time Source Destination Protocol Length Info 382 3.976460000 10.47.35.11 10.47.32.3 SMB2 362 Create Request File: pcross\My Documents 413 4.525047000 10.47.35.11 10.47.32.3 SMB2 146 Close Request File: pcross\My Documents 441 5.235927000 10.47.32.3 10.47.35.11 SMB2 298 Create Response File: pcross\My Documents\Downloads 442 5.236199000 10.47.35.11 10.47.32.3 SMB2 260 Find Request File: pcross\My Documents\Downloads SMB2_FIND_ID_BOTH_DIRECTORY_INFO Pattern: *;Find Request File: pcross\My Documents\Downloads SMB2_FIND_ID_BOTH_DIRECTORY_INFO Pattern: * 573 6.327634000 10.47.35.11 10.47.32.3 SMB2 146 Close Request File: pcross\My Documents\Downloads 703 7.664186000 10.47.35.11 10.47.32.3 SMB2 394 Create Request File: pcross\My Documents\Downloads\WestlandsProspectus\P24 __ P21.pdf These are some of the SMB2 records from a list of a couple of hundred which original from my computer with a destination of the fileserver. One of the interesting things to note is the last entry in the examples above is for a PDF file. That file was not open anywhere on my computer, or on anyone elses. No folders with the files in were open either. When I took another capture when the network was running fine, there were hardly any SMB2 entries, and the ones that were displayed were mainly from Wireshark. We currently have around 800 computers, 90 Macs and 200 Laptops and Netbooks. Our concern is if this traffic is happening on my computer, is it happening on other computers, and if so, would those computers be adding to the slow network issues? Again, this only happens during certain times. We're pretty sure its not the our antivirus. Is there anything to narrow down whats initializing this SMB traffic during the particular times? Or if anyone has any extra advice, or links to resources it would be appreciate.

  • openvpn TCP/UDP slow SSH/SMB performance

    - by Petr Latal
I have question about strange behavior of my openVPN configuration on Debian lenny. I have 2 server configs (one proto tcp-server based and one proto udp based). ISP bandwidth is 7Mbit/7Mbit. When I uses proto tcp-server my download server rate is fine around 6,4 Mbit/s, but upload rate is about 3Mbit/s. When I uses proto udp, my download server rate is around 3Mbit/s and upload rate around 6,4Mbit/s. I tried to handle the MTU, MSSFIX and cipher on/off on server and client configs to synchronize rates, but without solution. • Enable SMB file sharing on OS X - "Incorrect Password"

    - by Tim Robinson
I have a Mac running Snow Leopard connected to an Active Directory domain. I can share folders on the Mac and view files from Windows without problems. When I try to enable my Mac account for write access through System Preferences, I'm prompted for my account's password. Even though I'm entering the right one, I get an "Incorrect Password" response. The same process works fine for the local Mac administrator account; it's the Active Directory account I'm having problems with. I followed the advice on this page on apple.com without success: (I used the Mac to reset my domain password, and re-created my login keychain) If you want to use a user account that existed before you installed Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther), you may need to reset the password for the account using Accounts preferences. Can anyone suggest what might be wrong? Until I fix this I can't write to my Mac file share from Windows.

  • afp/smb transfers caps at 2 megabytes/sec, wireless N

    - by CQM
I wanted to transfer files between two mac computers. The network is wireless-N and both computers have wireless-N modules in them. The problem is that when I transfer files between them, via file sharing (afp) the network speed caps at 2 megabytes/sec. Just downloading files from the internet I can get faster speeds, so this isn't a constriction of my wifi bandwidth, it appears to be a constriction of the protocol being used. My wifi-n is set to 130mbits, so I should see real world transfer speeds around 12-16 megabytes/sec I did this command on both computers sudo sysctl -w net.inet.tcp.delayed_ack=0 which is supposed to lower tcp overhead, but this did not affect it. How can I get the speed I am expecting?

  • Anonymous access to SMB share hosted on Server 2008 R2 Enterprise

    - by bwerks
Hi all, First off, I have read through this post and a whole slew of non-SF posts which seem to address the same or a similar problem, however I was still unable to fix my problem. I've got three machines in this situation: a domain-joined server that runs Server 2008 R2 Enterprise ("share server") a domain-joined workstation running XP Pro SP3 ("test server") a domain-unjoined test server running Server 2003 R2 SP2 ("workstation") The share server is exposing a share on the network that the test server must access--it's a Source/Symbol Server share for our debugging purposes. I believe visual studio simply accesses the the share with its own credentials in this case, meaning that the share must be accessible anonymously since the test server isn't joined to the domain and there's no opportunity to supply domain authentication. I've attempted a lot of things to avoid the authentication window when accessing the share: I've enabled the Guest account on the share server and given Guest full sharing/NTFS permissions for the share. I've given ANONYMOUS LOGON full sharing/NTFS permissions for the share. I've added my share to “Network Access: Shares that can be accessed anonymously” in LSP. I've disabled “Network access: Restrict anonymous access to Named Pipes and Shares” in LSP. I've enabled “Network access: Let Everyone permissions apply to anonymous users” in LSP. Added ANONYMOUS LOGON to “Access this computer from the network” in LSP. Added the Guest account to “Access this computer from the network” in LSP. Attempted to provision the share using the Share and Storage Management MMC snap-in. Unfortunately when I attempt to access the share from the test server, I still see the prompt and I'm forced to enter "Guest" manually. I also tried this workflow using the local administrator account on a workstation, and the same thing happens both with and without XP Simple File Sharing enabled. Any idea why I'm getting these results, or what I should have done differently?

  • No LAN and SMB access, and Explorer not responsive, when using a second connection

    - by Lorenzo
I apologize if this is a duplicate question, I know that there are several questions about multiple connection (LAN + LAN and LAN + dialup) but I haven't been able to find one that fits my scenario. I'm still using Windows XP on my corporate laptop, and I'm connected to the corporate LAN via Ethernet. The LAN NIC has a public IP address, although not accessible externally, obtained via the corporate DNS server. This connection is firewalled and requires a proxy to access Internet. To access Internet sites blocked by the corporate firewall, I use my smartphone via USB tethering. It is seen as a new LAN interface, and I get a private IP address (class 192.168..). There are two problems: The LAN is not accessible, as the default gateway goes to the tethering NIC. I'd like to solve this, but I can live with it. My PC becomes unresponsive if I use Windows Explorer to view local files, or even when I open the start menu. I guess that this is caused by attemps to connect to a mapped network drive. But I disabled the "Client for Microsoft Networks" in the tethering NIC. Why the system still hangs? Of course if I disable the Ethernet NIC, Explorer stops hanging. If you need further details, add a comment. Thanks!

  • Restrict SMB user from changing password

    - by Canadian Luke
On a server running Debian Wheezy and Samba ver 3 with a tdb backend, how do I restrict a single user from changing the password? This account is one of 2 generic accounts, one for students and one for Teachers on Call (TOC). The users are created, but I'm not deploying the server yet. When looking through Google, I came across setting the maximum password age, but not setting the minumum password age (I'd be happy with a 5 year password...)

  • Good Wiki for SMB with Customer Interaction

    - by wag2639
Hey, I know there's a bunch of wiki questions already but I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good wiki thats good for use internally and can be access by some clients? Must be free (F/OSS preferred), Ubuntu (9.10+) compatible, and have per-page permissions. I setup MediaWiki and its fine for internal use but I don't know how, without some severe hackery, how to restrict a client to just view one page and all the images on it and css. It'll be worse when they ask to be able to modify it as well. Edit: also, please no java solutions

  • Debian SMB share having permission issues in windows 7

    - by xxpor
Hi Everyone, I setup a Debian squeeze server with samba. I then shared my /media directory with the following configuration: [media] comment=Hard Drives read only = no locking = no path = /media guest ok = yes browsable = yes directory mask = 0777 When the drives are mapped in Windows 7, the user can write to all of the subdirectories of media (sdb1, sdc1, etc), but cannot write to any folders that they create themselves in the subdirectories of media. For example, if the user mapped /media/sdb1 to Z:, and then creates a folder Z:\test, the folder is created successfully, but no files can be written to Z:\test. If the user ssh's into the server, they have no problems writing to these directories. I have included the screenshots, in order, of what happens on Windows. This samba share is mounted with ntfs-3g, if it makes a difference. Screenshots are here

  • Can't connect to samba using openVPN

    - by Arthur
    I'm fairly new to using VPN. For a home project I'm running a OpenVPN server. This server runs within a network 192.168.2.0 and subnet 255.255.255.0 I can connect to this net work using the ip range 5.5.0.0 I guess the subnet is 255.255.255.192, but I'm not really sure about that. When connecting to my VPN network I can access the server via 5.5.0.1 and I can see the samba shares created on that machine. However I'm not allowed to connect to the samba share. When I look at the samba log of the computer which tries to connect I can see these messages: lib/access.c:338(allow_access) Denied connection from 5.5.0.132 (5.5.0.132) These are the share definition in /etc/samba/smb.conf interfaces = 192.168.2.0/32 5.5.0.0/24 security = user # wins-support = no # wins-server = w.x.y.z. // A LOT OF MORE SETTINGS AND COMMENTS hosts allow = 127.0.0.1 192.168.2.0/24 5.5.0.132/24 hosts deny = 0.0.0.0/0 browseable = yes path = [path to share] directory mask = 0755 force create mode = 0755 valid users = [a valid user, which i use to login with] writeable = yes force group = [the group i force to write with] force user = [the user i force to write with] This is the output of the ifconfig command as0t0 Link encap:UNSPEC HWaddr 00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00 inet addr:5.5.0.1 P-t-P:5.5.0.1 Mask:255.255.255.192 UP POINTOPOINT RUNNING NOARP MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:200 RX bytes:0 (0.0 B) TX bytes:0 (0.0 B) as0t1 Link encap:UNSPEC HWaddr 00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00 inet addr:5.5.0.65 P-t-P:5.5.0.65 Mask:255.255.255.192 UP POINTOPOINT RUNNING NOARP MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:200 RX bytes:0 (0.0 B) TX bytes:0 (0.0 B) as0t2 Link encap:UNSPEC HWaddr 00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00 inet addr:5.5.0.129 P-t-P:5.5.0.129 Mask:255.255.255.192 UP POINTOPOINT RUNNING NOARP MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:xxxx errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:xxxx errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:200 RX bytes:xxxx (xxxx MB) TX bytes:12403514 (xxxx MB) as0t3 Link encap:UNSPEC HWaddr 00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00 inet addr:5.5.0.193 P-t-P:5.5.0.193 Mask:255.255.255.192 UP POINTOPOINT RUNNING NOARP MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:7041 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:9797 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:200 RX bytes:xxxx (xxxx KB) TX bytes:xxxx (xxxx MB) eth1 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:0e:2e:61:78:21 inet addr:192.168.2.100 Bcast:192.168.2.255 Mask:255.255.255.0 inet6 addr: xxxx:xxxx:xxxx:xxxx:7821/64 Scope:Link UP BROADCAST RUNNING PROMISC MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:xxxx errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:xxxx errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:xxxx (xxxx MB) TX bytes:xxxx (xxxx MB) Interrupt:16 Base address:0x6000 lo Link encap:Local Loopback inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0 inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1 RX packets:xxxx errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:xxxx errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:0 RX bytes:xxxx (xxxx MB) TX bytes:xxxx (xxxx MB) Can anyone tell me what is going wrong?   • Group Policy drive maps fail with Error Code: 0x80070043

    - by Topherhead
I'm running a Server 2008 R2 domain with all Windows 7 x64 bit client machines. All drives are mapped using Group Policy. Which were previously on a NAS We just built a new, huge, fast server. So I'm in the process of migrating all the network drives from the NAS to the new fileserver(fs). The old drive maps were mapped using group policy so I just went in and updated to the new server and selected the "Replace" option. But the drives just plain do not map. I do an RSOP on my machine and the error for the drive map is: Result: Failure (Error Code: 0x80070043) The other odd thing, though it may or may not have anything to do with it, is that the winning GPO shown is shown with its SID instead of its name. The SID is correct though. Accessing the shares through Explorer works fine, and mapping them manually works fine. Any ideas? Thanks Chris

  • Does enabling SMB2 on a NetApp filer require a cifs restart?

    - by Sim
I would like to enable SMB2 on a FAS 2050 running Data ONTAP 7.3.2 as by default it is disabled. I have discovered that to enable SMB2 the following option must be set: options cifs.smb2.client.enable on Does this require a restart of cifs to take affect or just does it start working magically? Also will this change persist across a reboot?

  • VPN - Cisco 2800 Series Router and Cisco ASA

    - by NickToyota
What I currently have: Windows 2003/2008 servers supporting a 150 user environment. Linksys RV082 Router (HQ) and RV042 (satellite) routers Site to Site VPN Tunneling to 5 satellite (< 10 user) offices What I need: End-user VPN allowing myself and users to connect remotely to my network I need to replace our current routers and have been recommended the 2811 Router. Can this router alone be enough to get what I need (VPN tunnelling for users and site to site VPN) or will I require purchasing an additional ASA appliance?

  • Adding network share as the system account breaks Win7 backup to network

    - by ChrisBenn
(On Win7 Ultimate x64 SP1) So I've been using Win7 backup to \192.168.0.100\Backup\main-desktop\ for awhile without issue. Yesterday I tried to setup crashplan to synchronize my dropbox folder and a network share. I then found out that crashplan, as it runs under the system account, can't see my user mapped drives. So I created a startup script net use O: \192.168.0.100\Documents /USER:192.168.0.100\username password and set it to run, on startup, after the network interface is up, as the system account. (the username & password are the same for the net use script above, the locally logged in user, and the explicit username/password entered in windows backup). I woke up this morning to find error flags from the windows backup and get "Network location cannot be used" (0x800704B3). If I disable the startup task & reboot then windows backup works fine. I'm not sure why having a mapped drive for another user is killing windows backup (same server, different folder). I can work around the issue by using another program to synchronize the two folders, but I'm completely in the dark as to why this happens (and it's 100% repeatable). Uninstalling the crashplan client doesn't change anything - it's the net use run under the system account that breaks win7 backup (to a network location).
