• Is it professional to have funny looking logging messages

  Hi, Recently I have joined a new project team where in the java application logs have logged messages in a non-formal way[can't think of suitable word]. here how they look :-) <message> for info messages :-| <message> for warn :-( <message> for error besides there's also ASCII art drawing , different one for each log when that particular service starts up or is killed .And there many more styles for certain application events. iam not sure if it has any significant overhead on the application or not. I would like to ask you folks if you come across such unique styles of logging messages or do you also practice any styles.what is your opinion about it. BR /jon

• J2SE Proxy Authentication

  We use 2 SIMILAR Microsoft ISA Proxy Server 2003 to connect to internet. Each Proxy has different Login style, as below : Server-1 : nt-domain\alan Server-2 : [email protected] Logon in IE, Firefox and my Phonecell via Wifi all are fine. But, a problem appears when we run a java application J2SE Ver 4, 5 and 6, where it needs internet authentication. Logon to Server-2 is OK, but FAIL for Server-2 (style : [email protected]). • Automation of testing using JUnit

  Hi, i am trying to automate manual testing of modules in my project. We are dealing with IBM Websphere Message queue software. We have a trigger component written in core java which when executed polls for availability of message in the configured queue. Its an indefinite while loop that keeps the trigger component running. I have written test cases in JUnit to put message in the queue and now will i be able to start/stop the trigger component on demand? Invoking the trigger component keeps it running and i am not getting the control back to check the expected output. If i start it in thread then the log files to which the trigger component is supposed to update when processing the message is not getting updated. How can i resolve this situation. • Weird Mono compilation error

  Hi, I am using IKVM to get SVNKit on a Mono project I'm working with, I have a class that implements an interface from SVNKit, and I can't compile: On windows and on .NET, everything compiles fine, just getting this on Mono. /home/nubela/Workspace/subsync/subsync/Core/Subversion/PropGetHandler.cs(22,22): Error CS0535: Subsync.Core.Subversion.PropGetHandler' does not implement interface member org.tmatesoft.svn.core.wc.ISVNPropertyHandler.__()' (CS0535) (subsync) I googled _() method, and it seems to be the initializer method for the base class in the Java library compiled from IKVM. I have no clue how to proceed now, any idea guys? :)

• How does MTOM work + sample code

  I am trying to make a very simple web-service which does the following: The client hits the web service requesting a file. The web service's service class queries a hashtable which has the key (search query) and the value as the base64encoded value of a file (say a pdf) Now,I need to use MTOM to return the base64encoded value stored in the hashtable to the client. It's upto the client to decode it and convert it to pdf. So, here are my questions: I understand we encode files to base64 for transmission via web service, but where and how does MTOM come into the picture there? Can some one provide me a simple method which uses MTOM and sends the data back. Do we need to specify something in the WSDL too? or a simple String return type would suffice? Why/Why not? Thanks I have seen this code. It uses a lot of annotations, I just need a simple java code using MTOM. New to J2EE HERE :)

• Should we seal Singletons? Should we try to inherit from Singletons in the first place?

  Should a Singleton class be allowed to have children? Should we seal it? What are the pro's and con's? For being able to inherit from a Singleton class, we would have to make the constructor protected instead of private. Now, that will be fine in c#, but the protected word in java gives both child-classes and package-classes access to the constructor. Which means not only classes that inherit from our Singleton can access the constructor but other classes in the same package can do it. I'm a bit confused about all this facts. Maybe I am making a big fuss about nothing to worry about too much? Until now, I never had any necessity of trying to inherit from a Singleton, so maybe this is just an academic question! Thanks

  I am a passionate software developer and greatly enjoy programming. However I was recently contacted regarding a developer lead position for a government job at NYC for the fire department. The pay is pretty good, and I would assume the position has good job security and stability. But I am hesitant to even go for an interview as it seems like an exaggerated version of Office Space with a lot of Bureaucracy and mindless paper work. • Can I pass data into a HashMap<String,Object> from JSP to a JavaBean?

  Hi Everyone, I am just starting out with JSP, Java, etc web development... I would love to use some sort of framework, but for this project I can't do that. In any case I want to potentially pass essentially limitless data (for flexibility) to my javabeans. My idea was if I can have key value pairs that would really easy. The values will always be strings or integers. HashMap seems ideal in this case. Is this possible? Any ideas? Can I do this with JSP Bean tags or should I write scriptlets? Thanks!!!

  I'm familiar with ORM as a concept, and I've even used nHibernate several years ago for a .NET project; however, I haven't kept up with the topic of ORM in Java and haven't had a chance to use any of these tools. But, now I may have the chance to begin to use some ORM tools for one of our applications, in an attempt to move away from a series of legacy web services. I'm having a hard time telling the difference betweeen the JPA spec, what you get with the Hibernate library itself, and what JDO has to offer. So, I understand that this question is a bit open-ended, but I was hoping to get some opinions on: What are the pros and cons of each? Which would you suggest for a new project? Are there certain conditions when it would make sense to use one framework vs the other?

  Hi, does anybody knows about Java/C# database independent authorization library. This library should support read, write, delete, insert actions across company organizational structure. Something like this: - user can see all documents - user can enter new document assigned to his unit - user can change all documents assigned to his unit and all subordinate units. - user can delete documents that are assigned to him I should also be able to create custom actions (besides read, write,...) connect them to certain class and assign that "security token" to user (e.g. document.expire). If there aren't any either free or commercial libraries, is there a book that could be useful in implementing this functionality? Thanks.

• good documentation about "avoid catching throwable", in context of weblogic server

  hi all, i am currently refactoring an existing codebase (EJBs...) to rip out all blocks where a Throwable is catched inside of the EJB. try { ... do some business logic } catch(Throwable t){ ... log and swallow ... :-( } i want/need to convince the people around me with proper documentation that "catching throwable" is a no-go for an EJB (we have lots of discussions around this :-(( ). weblogic will handle all the "Error" conditions and maybe invalidate EJBs and put fresh(working) EJBs into the pool. catching Throwable would undermine all these security nets provided by weblogic. and catching throwable is bad practice anyway (but people here are reluctant and use the "throwable" hammer everywhere). is anyone able to point me to some online docs where this behaviour is explained (for weblogic or jboss or...). i searched via google and had a look at the weblogic docs but wasn't able to find anything, just generic java doc. any help highly appreciated cheers marcel

• Viewing HTML inside Applet without using JEditorPane

  Hello, I have a small (500kb) swing applet that displays very simple/limited set of small HTML page(s) inside it with JEditorPane, however this does not seem to work 100% fluently, some customers get a blank page displayed without any java exceptions. The page works OK from my machine. I need a more reliable way to show HTML page to all our users.   I am facing problems in using xalan in eclipse plugin. When I try to create factory instance by: TransformerFactory tFactory = TransformerFactory.newInstance("org.apache.xalan.processor.TransformerFactoryImpl", null); I get error: javax.xml.transform.TransformerFactoryConfigurationError: Provider org.apache.xalan.processor.TransformerFactoryImpl not found ... I have following lib jars in plugin classpath: xml-apis.jar, xercesImpl.jar, serializer.jar, xalan.jar I even can't create class instance by: c = Class.forName("org.apache.xalan.processor.TransformerFactoryImpl"); Object o = c.newInstance(); It returns error: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: org.apache.xalan.processor.TransformerFactoryImpl But if I run same code outside eclipse plugin with same libs on classpath, it works fine. Could Somebody give an idea if I am doing some mistake or how to reolve this issue?

• Improve mysql JDBC insert call

  i have a legacy Java system that every time it gets an order it makes a JDBC call to a stored procedure for each field in the order. Generally the stored procedure will get called 20 to 30 times for each order. The store procedure is just doing an insert into a table for each field. i need to improve the performance of this operation. one thought i had was to create an insert query string that does multiple inserts in one JDBC call. MySql supports a multiple insert string. INSERT INTO PersonAge (name, age) VALUES ('Helen', 24), ('Katrina', 21), ('Samia', 22), ('Hui Ling', 25), ('Yumie', 29) This has the advantage of only requiring one JDBC call per order. Any other ideas on how to improve performance?

  Im developing desktop java application using maven. I got a *.properties file that I need to retrive during execution (src/resources/application.properties). The only thing comes to my mind is to use: private Properties applicationProperties; applicationProperties.load(new BufferedInputStream(new FileInputStream("src/resources/application.properties"))); This would work if I run my application directly from IDE. I want to to keep outpout hierarchy clear, so I set maven to copy resources folder dircetly to target folder (which is a basedir for the output application). This way application.properties file won't load (since I have target/resources/application.properties but not target/src/resources/application.properties). What is the best way to manage resources so they work both when I debug from IDE and run builded jar file directly?

• How can I put my own text hover into default Eclipse editor?

  I need to put some extra information into to the standard "javadoc" hover, that shows up when you go with mouse over some token. Or I need to create a new hover showing that information while pressing some key (like alt) and then hovering (I can see that this is done e.g. with the shift key, which enables us to see the hover with sourcecode, instead of javadoc). So far I found documentation on how to create hover in your own editors, but I need to extend the default java editor. Basically I am interested in showing some e-mail information related to the classname (token) over which user is hovering. Is there any extension point that could be used for this? To split it like the following: Name der Straße 25a 88489 Teststadt to Name der Straße|25a|88489|Teststadt or Teststr. 3 88489 Beispielort (Großer Kreis) to Teststr.|3|88489|Beispielort (Großer Kreis) It would be perfect if the system / regex would still work if parts like the zip code or the city are missing. Is there any regex or library out there with which I could archive this? EDIT: Rule for german addresses: Street: Characters, numbers and spaces House no: Number and any characters (or space) until a series of numbers (zip) (at least in these examples) Zip: 5 digits Place or City: The rest maybe also with spaces, commas or braces

  I'm looking for a builder for HQL in Java. I want to get rid of things like: StringBuilder builder = new StringBuilder() .append("select stock from ") .append( Stock.class.getName() ) .append( " as stock where stock.id = ") .append( id ); I'd rather have something like: HqlBuilder builder = new HqlBuilder() .select( "stock" ) .from( Stock.class.getName() ).as( "stock" ) .where( "stock.id" ).equals( id ); I googled a bit, and I couldn't find one. I wrote a quick & dumb HqlBuilder that suits my needs for now, but I'd love to find one that has more users and tests than me alone. Note: I'd like to be able to do things like this and more, which I failed to do with the Criteria API: select stock from com.something.Stock as stock, com.something.Bonus as bonus where stock.someValue = bonus.id ie. select all stocks whose property someValue points to any bonus from the Bonus table. For running a JAR file I am using a command-line window and executing the following command: java -jar helloworld.jar By using this command I can execute the JAR file. But instead of doing it in a command-line window, I want to execute the JAR file if I double click on the JAR file. I did some Google search for this. But I cannot do this. • How can I create a JTable where the first column is always in the JScrollPane viewport?

  What's the best way to set up a table in a JScrollPane such that the first column is always on the screen in the same position regardless of horizontal scrolling and overlaps columns that pass underneath? When the scrollbar is at the farthest left, the columns look normal, but as the user scrolls to the right, the secondary columns (2 and on) move underneath the first until the last column appears on the far right of the viewport? I found a sample taken from Eckstein's "Java Swing" book that sort of does this, but it doesn't allow resizing of the first column. I was thinking of some scheme where one JPanel held a horizontal struct and a table holding the secondary columns and another JPanel which floated over them (fixed regardless of scrolling). The struct would be to keep the viewport range constant as the first column floated around. Ideally I could do it with two tables using the same model, but I'm not sure if the whole idea is a naive solution.

• What does the status code of the Perl interpreter mean?

  Hi, This might sound slightly confusing, but please bear with me. I'm trying to execute a copy of the Perl interpreter using Java's Runtime.exec(). However, it returned error code 9. After running the file a few times, the perl interpreter mysteriously started to return code 253 with no changes in my command at all. What does code 253 / code 9 mean? A google search for perl interpreter's exit codes turned up nothing. Where can I find a list of exit codes for the Perl interpreter? Thanks!
