• Insert the lowest possible unique positve integer in an atomic fashion in MySql

  Say I have a table with a unique positive integer field. I currently have rows with id's of [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 12, 35]. Is there a insert query that I could write that would assign the id field to the lowest unique positive integer (in this case 6)? It would have to do this atomically so there isn't the possibility of concurrent inserts wiping out each other or failing.

  I have a Location that can have Events. I want to have an upcoming_events method but want it to round down such that if someone looks at 10pm at night, it will show todays events. I have this: def upcoming_events d=Time.new d.strftime("%m-%d-%Y") l=Event.where('location_id=? and start_datetime>?',self.id, d) end I gets converted down correctly but in d.strftime but the query is: SELECT `events`.* FROM `events` WHERE (location_id=301 and start_datetime>'2012-06-20 02:49:23') Any idea how to just get it to do '2012-06-20'?

  I heard opinion that it make no sense to create indexes when field has less changeability. Eg if it stores only A,B,C,D values then there wouldn't be benefit of having such index, and further more SQL server will not use it at all when executing query. I wonder your opinion on that matter?

• Is it possible to include JButton in a JTable?

  I have a JTable that stores the results of a database query, so far so good. What I want is for the last column in each table to have a clickible JButton that will open the edit screen for the object represented in that row, and that means the button will need to know the details of the first column in the table from its own row (the ID from the database).
