  • C# : DBConnection.Open() timeout is too long.

    - by leo
    Hi, I'm trying to connect to a server that the user inputs. When the server doesn't exist, I'd like to give a quick feedback to the end-user so he can correct what he's typed. Is there any way to test if a server exists before trying to connect ? Thanks

  • What is the most efficient/elegant way to parse a flat table into a tree?

    - by Tomalak
    Assume you have a flat table that stores an ordered tree hierarchy: Id Name ParentId Order 1 'Node 1' 0 10 2 'Node 1.1' 1 10 3 'Node 2' 0 20 4 'Node 1.1.1' 2 10 5 'Node 2.1' 3 10 6 'Node 1.2' 1 20 What minimalistic approach would you use to output that to HTML (or text, for that matter) as a correctly ordered, correctly intended tree? Assume further you only have basic data structures (arrays and hashmaps), no fancy objects with parent/children references, no ORM, no framework, just your two hands. The table is represented as a result set, which can be accessed randomly. Pseudo code or plain English is okay, this is purely a conceptional question. Bonus question: Is there a fundamentally better way to store a tree structure like this in a RDBMS? EDITS AND ADDITIONS To answer one commenter's (Mark Bessey's) question: A root node is not necessary, because it is never going to be displayed anyway. ParentId = 0 is the convention to express "these are top level". The Order column defines how nodes with the same parent are going to be sorted. The "result set" I spoke of can be pictured as an array of hashmaps (to stay in that terminology). For my example was meant to be already there. Some answers go the extra mile and construct it first, but thats okay. The tree can be arbitrarily deep. Each node can have N children. I did not exactly have a "millions of entries" tree in mind, though. Don't mistake my choice of node naming ('Node 1.1.1') for something to rely on. The nodes could equally well be called 'Frank' or 'Bob', no naming structure is implied, this was merely to make it readable. I have posted my own solution so you guys can pull it to pieces.

  • Insert a datetime value with GetDate() function to a SQL server (2005) table?

    - by David.Chu.ca
    I am working (or fixing bugs) on an application which was developed in VS 2005 C#. The application saves data to a SQL server 2005. One of insert SQL statement tries to insert a time-stamp value to a field with GetDate() TSQL function as date time value. Insert into table1 (field1, ... fieldDt) values ('value1', ... GetDate()); The reason to use GetDate() function is that the SQL server may be at a remove site, and the date time may be in a difference time zone. Therefore, GetDate() will always get a date from the server. As the function can be verified in SQL Management Studio, this is what I get: SELECT GetDate(), LEN(GetDate()); -- 2010-06-10 14:04:48.293 19 One thing I realize is that the length is not up to the milliseconds, i.e., 19 is actually for '2010-06-10 14:04:48'. Anyway, the issue I have right now is that after the insert, the fieldDt actually has a date time value up to minutes, for example, '2010-06-10 14:04:00'. I am not sure why. I don't have permission to update or change the table with a trigger to update the field. My question is that how I can use a INSERT T-SQL to add a new row with a date time value ( SQL server's local date time) with a precision up to milliseconds?

  • help with exception handling in linq

    - by stackoverflowuser
    I have the following code to retrieve customer name, total (orders ), sum (order details) for reach customer in Northwind database. The problem with below code is that it raises an exception since a few customers dont have any entry in orders table. I know using the query syntax (join) the exception can be avoided. I want to know if the same can be handled with the extension method syntax. CustomerOrderDataContext db = new CustomerOrderDataContext(); var customerOrders = db.Customers.Select(c => new { CompanyName = c.CompanyName, TotalOrders = c.Orders.Count(), TotalQuantity = c.Orders.SelectMany(o => o.Order_Details).Sum(o=>o.Quantity) });

  • ERD-CLASS design

    - by Mahesh
    Hello guyz,i am new to daatbase and class diagram.I just get scenarios from internet and try to develop ERD and Class Diagram for them.But the following scenario has caused me some problems, and i am not sure about my design. "Whenever an employee fills leave application form, the leave application should be appeared for approval to his/her team leader. Team Leader has the option to change the date of requested leave and to approve or reject the leave. Employee also has the option to change date of previously unapproved leaves or to cancel any of unapproved leave. In case of team leader, he can approve his own leaves. Management should be able to create categories of leaves like (Casual, Sick, Planned work, etc) and should be able to adjust the days allocated to each type of leave". I have identified these as entities for ERD 1) Employee(I think i dont need to make entity for Technical lead,since he is an employee) 2) LeaveHistory 3) LeaveCategory Plz correct me if the system need more classes or entities

  • Stored Procedure for Multi-Table Insert Error: Cannot Insert the Value Null into Column

    - by SidC
    Good Evening All, I've created the following stored procedure: CREATE PROCEDURE AddQuote -- Add the parameters for the stored procedure here AS BEGIN -- SET NOCOUNT ON added to prevent extra result sets from -- interfering with SELECT statements. SET NOCOUNT ON; Declare @CompanyName nvarchar(50), @Addr nvarchar(50), @City nvarchar(50), @State nvarchar(2), @Zip nvarchar(5), @NeedDate datetime, @PartNumber float, @Qty int -- Insert statements for procedure here Insert into dbo.Customers (CompanyName, Address, City, State, ZipCode) Values (@CompanyName, @Addr, @City, @State, @Zip) Insert into dbo.Orders (NeedbyDate) Values(@NeedDate) Insert into dbo.OrderDetail (fkPartNumber,Qty) Values (@PartNumber,@Qty) END GO When I execute AddQuote, I receive an error stating: Msg 515, Level 16, State 2, Procedure AddQuote, Line 31 Cannot insert the value NULL into column 'ID', table 'Diel_inventory.dbo.OrderDetail'; column does not allow nulls. INSERT fails. The statement has been terminated. I understand that I've set Qty field to not allow nulls and want to continue doing so. However, are there other syntax changes I should make to ensure that this sproc works correctly? Thanks, Sid

  • How to model parent to child pair in MySQL (SQL)

    - by mikeschuld
    I have a data model that includes element types Stage, Actor, and Form. Logically, Stages can be assigned pairs of ( Form <--- Actor ) which can be duplicated many times (i.e. same person and same form added to the same stage at a later date/time). Right now I am modeling this with these tables: Stage Form Actor Form_Actor _______________ |Id | |FormId | --> Id in Form |ActorId | --> Id in Actor Stage_FormActor __________________ |Id | |StageId | --> Id in Stage |FormActorId | --> Id in Form_Actor I am using CodeSmith to generate the data layer for this setup and none of the templates really know how to handle this type of relationship correctly when generating classes. Ideally, the ORM would have Stage.FormActors where FormActor would be the pair Form, Actor. Is this the correct way to model these relationships. I have tried using all three Ids in one table as well Stage_Form_Actor ______________ |Id | |StageId | --> Id in Stage |FormId | --> Id in Form |ActorId | --> Id in Actor This doesn't really get generated very well either. Ideas?

  • SQLAlchemy: select over multiple tables

    - by ahojnnes
    Hi, I wanted to optimize my database query: link_list = select( columns=[link_table.c.rating, link_table.c.url, link_table.c.donations_in], whereclause=and_( not_(link_table.c.id.in_( select( columns=[request_table.c.recipient], whereclause=request_table.c.donator==donator.id ).as_scalar() )), link_table.c.id!=donator.id, ), limit=20, ).execute().fetchall() and tried to merge those two selects in one query: link_list = select( columns=[link_table.c.rating, link_table.c.url, link_table.c.donations_in], whereclause=and_( link_table.c.active==True, link_table.c.id!=donator.id, request_table.c.donator==donator.id, link_table.c.id!=request_table.c.recipient, ), limit=20, order_by=[link_table.c.rating.desc()] ).execute().fetchall() the database-schema looks like: link_table = Table('links', metadata, Column('id', Integer, primary_key=True, autoincrement=True), Column('url', Unicode(250), index=True, unique=True), Column('registration_date', DateTime), Column('donations_in', Integer), Column('active', Boolean), ) request_table = Table('requests', metadata, Column('id', Integer, primary_key=True, autoincrement=True), Column('recipient', Integer, ForeignKey('links.id')), Column('donator', Integer, ForeignKey('links.id')), Column('date', DateTime), ) There are several links (donator) in request_table pointing to one link in the link_table. I want to have links from link_table, which are not yet "requested". But this does not work. Is it actually possible, what I'm trying to do? If so, how would you do that? Thank you very much in advance!

  • T-SQL: Build Nested Set From Parent-Child Relationship

    - by Peder Rice
    I have a table that stores my Customer hierarchy with a nested set (due to the specific design of the application, I wasn't able to leverage just a Customer/Parent Customer mapping table). To simplify maintenance of this table, I've built a couple of stored procedures to handle moving nodes around and creating new nodes, but it's significantly more work than maintaining a Customer/Parent Customer table. Further, these structures are very fragile. So I'm looking for a way to have a Customer/Parent Customer table and then convert that table to a nested set on demand. Does anyone have a link to such an implementation?

  • Range partition skip check

    - by user289429
    We have large amount of data partitioned on year value using range partition in oracle. We have used range partition but each partition contains data only for one year. When we write a query targeting a specific year, oracle fetches the information from that partition but still checks if the year is what we have specified. Since this year column is not part of the index it fetches the year from table and compares it. We have seen that any time the query goes to fetch table data it is getting too slow. Can we somehow avoid oracle comparing the year values since we for sure know that the partition contains information for only one year.

  • Howto monitor traffic between IIS and MSSQL

    - by kockiren
    Hello @all, i try to check how much traffic flows between MSSQL Server and IIS Server in different Locations. There are 1 ipcop in every Location and i download the tcpdump file from one Firewall and search for DST=ipmssql and SRC=ipIIS but i did not find the ip from the Database Server. But there are traffic between both. Any suggestions why i did not find the IP Adress from the MSSQL Server? Is this an configuration failure in IPCop or is the Traffic between ISS and MSSQL so strange :-) Regards Rene

  • How to use a getter with a nullable?

    - by Desmond Lost
    I am reading a bunch of queries from a database. I had an issue with the queries not closing, so I added a CommandTimeout. Now, the individual queries read from the config file each time they are run. How would I make the code cache the int from the config file only once using a static nullable and getter. I was thinking of doing something along the lines of: static int? var; get{ var = null; if (var.HasValue) ...(i dont know how to complete the rest) My actual code: private object ExecuteQuery(string dbConnStr, bool fixIt) { object result = false; using (SqlConnection connection = new SqlConnection(dbConnStr)) { connection.Open(); using (SqlCommand sqlCmd = new SqlCommand()) { AddSQLParms(sqlCmd); sqlCmd.CommandTimeout = 30; sqlCmd.CommandText = _cmdText; sqlCmd.Connection = connection; sqlCmd.CommandType = System.Data.CommandType.Text; sqlCmd.ExecuteNonQuery(); } connection.Close(); } return result; }}

  • How to optimise MySQL query containing a subquery?

    - by aidan
    I have two tables, House and Person. For any row in House, there can be 0, 1 or many corresponding rows in Person. But, of those people, a maximum of one will have a status of "ACTIVE", the others will all have a status of "CANCELLED". e.g. SELECT * FROM House LEFT JOIN Person ON House.ID = Person.HouseID House.ID | Person.ID | Person.Status 1 | 1 | CANCELLED 1 | 2 | CANCELLED 1 | 3 | ACTIVE 2 | 1 | ACTIVE 3 | NULL | NULL 4 | 4 | CANCELLED I want to filter out the cancelled rows, and get something like this: House.ID | Person.ID | Person.Status 1 | 3 | ACTIVE 2 | 1 | ACTIVE 3 | NULL | NULL 4 | NULL | NULL I've achieved this with the following sub select: SELECT * FROM House LEFT JOIN ( SELECT * FROM Person WHERE Person.Status != "CANCELLED" ) Person ON House.ID = Person.HouseID ...which works, but breaks all the indexes. Is there a better solution that doesn't? I'm using MySQL and all relevant columns are indexed. EXPLAIN lists nothing in possible_keys. Thanks.

  • Grouping with operands question

    - by Filip
    I have a table: mysql> desc kursy_bid; +-----------+-------------+------+-----+---------+-------+ | Field | Type | Null | Key | Default | Extra | +-----------+-------------+------+-----+---------+-------+ | datetime | datetime | NO | PRI | NULL | | | currency | varchar(6) | NO | PRI | NULL | | | value | varchar(10) | YES | | NULL | | +-----------+-------------+------+-----+---------+-------+ 3 rows in set (0.01 sec) I would like to select some rows from a table, grouped by some time interval (can be one day) where I will have the first row and the last row of the group, the max(value) and min(value). I tried: select datetime, (select value order by datetime asc limit 1) open, (select value order by datetime desc limit 1) close, max(value), min(value) from kursy_bid_test where datetime > '2009-09-14 00:00:00' and currency = 'eurpln' group by month(datetime), day(datetime), hour(datetime); but the output is: | open | close | datetime | max(value) | min(value) | +--------+--------+---------------------+------------+------------+ | 1.4581 | 1.4581 | 2009-09-14 00:00:05 | 4.1712 | 1.4581 | | 1.4581 | 1.4581 | 2009-09-14 01:00:01 | 1.4581 | 1.4581 | As you see open and close is the same (but they shouldn't be). What should be the query to do what I want?

  • Select count / duplicates

    - by mike
    Hello! I have a table with all U.S. zip codes. each row contains the city and state name for the zip code. I'm trying to get a list of cities that show up in multiple states. This wouldn't be a problem if there weren't X amount of zip codes in the same city... So basically, I just want to the city in a state to count as 1 instead of it counting the city/state 7 times because there are 2+ zip codes in that city/state... I'm not really sure how to do this. I know I need to use count but how do I tell the mysql to only count a given city/state combo as 1?

  • SSIS - Multiple Configurations

    - by Mick Walker
    I have inherited a SSIS project. I have never worked with SSIS before, and the one thing that seems strange to me, is that there is no way to manage multiple configurations. For each SSIS package we have 3 delpoyment environments, DEV, UAT and PRODUCTION. At the moment I am having to edit the configuration for every package we deploy manually for each change (and there are a lot of packages). Does anyone know of a more graceful way to handle these configuration changes?

  • Select from table and function

    - by David Oneill
    I have a function that returns a table. The returned table contains (among other things) a store_id. I can get the store_id for a particular transaction_id and city_id as follows: select store_id from table(f_get_store(city_id, transaction_id)); I have another table that contains a list of transactions (which includes transaction_id and city_id). I want a query that returns store_id, city_id, transaction_id for every entry in the transaction table. My first guess was: select f_get_store(city_id, transaction_id), city_id, transaction_id from table; (simplified away the unimportant details) However, this yields an "ORA-00932: inconsistent datatypes" error. How do I need to structure this query? (I'm using Oracle)

  • Many to Many Association Tables - Is it customary to put additional columns in these tables?

    - by Randy Minder
    We've encountered the following situation in our database. We have table 'A' and table 'B' which have a M2M relationship. The association table is named 'AB' and contains a FK column to table 'A' and a FK column to table 'B'. Now we've identified a need to store additional data about this association. For example, a date when the association occurred, and who made the association etc. We've decided to put these additional columns in the 'AB' association table. However, something tells me this is frowned upon by database purists. On the other hand, it makes no sense to us to create yet an additional table to store this associated data. What's the prevailing thought on this?
