  Is there a way getting all countries, states,cities zipcodes/ in one single database. I have been looking all over. I discovered geonames.org, which has I guess all of the content. But there is no way to fetch that data directly. I am using rails. If there any helpers or Plugins, it'd be great. It would be awesome if there is a complete resource in any parsable format which I can use to get this database in place. Please recommend if you any thanks I do have the iso country code list but no States for some countries. Thanks in advance

  I am using Linq to query my database and returning a generic IList. Whatever I tried I couldn't convert an IQueryable to an IList. Here is my code.   I've got a flex/air app I've been working on, it uses a local sqlite database that is created on the initial application start. I've added some features to the application and in the process I had to add a new field to one of the database tables. My questions is how to I go about getting the application to create one new field that is located in a table that already exists? this is a the line that creates the table stmt.text = "CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS tbl_status ("+"status_id INTEGER PRIMARY KEY AUTOINCREMENT,"+" status_status TEXT)"; And now I'd like to add a status_default field. thanks!   We have oracle running on Solaris, and the shell is by default CSH. So the login script set the oracle_home,oracle_sid in csh also. But I don't like csh and want to use bash to do my work. So how to source the csh login script in bash? e.g, the following is what in the .cshrc file. And when use bash, I'd like use these variables. One way is to copy the variables again and use bash command, such as export ORACLE_SID=TEST. But doing so will let us to maintain two copy of the files. And when we change the database name, or upgrade the database, I need to maintian the bash login file seperately. • SQL Server 2005/2008: Identify current user

  Hello I have a web application, which is using a SQL Server 2005 database. My problem is, that the application has no role management. So the application always accesses the database with one default user. But now I have to save and access a value only for the current user. Is there any way to do this? Maybe something like a session on the web server? The best way would be, if there is any possibility to access the current session id of the web server from T-SQL. Do anyone understand my problem? :) Torben

• How to determine the maximum integer the model can handle?

  "What is the biggest integer the model field that this application instance can handle?" We have sys.maxint, but I'm looking for the database+model instance. We have the IntegerField, the SmallIntegerField, the PositiveSmallIntegerField, and a couple of others beside. They could all vary between each other and each database type. I found the "IntegerRangeField" custom field example here on stackoverflow. Might have to use that, and guess the lowest common denominator? Or rethink the design I suppose. Is there an easy way to work out the biggest integer an IntegerField, or its variants, can cope with?

• Troubleshooting source of heavy resource-usage on a server 2008 running multiple sites

  Hi, I am running about 10 asp.net websites on a hosted virtual server. The server runs Server 2008 - each website is backed by its own database running on SQL server 2008 on the same box. Lately the box has seemed really slow. The only kind of discovery i could think of doing was looking in the task manager, where i can see w3wp and sqlserver.exe jumping to 40% cpu usage every 5-10 seconds. What are the steps i can take to determine which of my websites is taking these resources and or what database is getting hit the most? I have of course ssms installed on the machine as well. As you can tell, my sysadmin skills are very very limited - any help would be much appreciated.

• Ruby on Rails Foreigner plugin not working for SQL Server

  Well, now that I've finally got my stupid ODBC stuff configured, I took a schema.rb file that I dumped from a Postgres database and did a db:schema:load on it in a Rails project configured for SQL Server. Well, it sets up all the schema in the SQL Server database except for a minor detail: No foreign keys are created. The rake command doesn't show any errors and does say it is adding foreign keys. But they don't actually get added. This is the last bit from the command: -- add_foreign_key("workhistoryform", "form", {:name=>"workhistoryform_form_rid_fkey", :column=>"form_rid", :primary_key=>"form_rid"}) -> 0.0002s -- initialize_schema_migrations_table() -> 0.0092s -- assume_migrated_upto_version(0) -> 0.0942s [earlz@earlzarch avp_msql_migrations]$ So what is the problem? Does the Foreigner plugin not work in SQL Server? If it didn't I'd expect to see an error or something...

  Hello, I am working on an Excel application that queries a SQL database. The queries can take a long time to run (20-40 min). If I've miss-coded something it can take a long time to error or reach a break point. I can save the results to a sheet fine, it's when I am working with the record sets that things can blow up. Is there a way to load the data into a ADODB.Recordset when I'm debugging to skip querying the database (after the first time)? • Are ORM's counterproductive to OO design?

  In OOD, design of an object is said to be characterized by its identity and behavior. Having used OR/M's in the past, the primary purpose, in my opinion, revolves around the ability to store/retrieve data. That is to say, OR/M objects are not design by behavior, but rather data (i.e. database tables). Case and point: Many OR/M tools come with a point-to-a-database-table-and-click-object-generator. If objects are no longer characterized by behavior this will, in my opinion, muddy the identity and responsibility of the objects. Subsequently, if objects are not defined by a responsibility this could lend a hand to having tightly coupled classes and overall poor design. Furthermore, I would think that in an application setting, you would be heading towards scalability issues. So, my question is, do you think that ORM's are counterproductive to OO design? Perhaps the underlying question would be whether or not they are counterproductive to application development.

• Handling update errors in multiple records in the TClientDataset's ReconcileError method

  I'm trying to use the ReconcileError event to allow the user to correct the data after an update error which occurred in a specific record among others. Example: I have a dataset with one field and 3 records, this field have a unique constraint on the database, then I change one value to conflict when it reaches the database, then I call ApplyUpdates on the Dataset. This will generate an error (violation of unique constraint) in the provider and abort the applyupdates process, returning raAbort in the Action var of the ReconcileError method. In the ReconcileError method I tryied to use: Action := HandleReconcileError(aDataSet, UpdateKind, E); ** EDIT ** After debugging and dumping the DataSet records which were returned from the server, I noticed that there are 2 records in this Dataset, the first is the Old record and the second have all the changes I made to the first record. I'm a bit confused, will I always get this DataSet with 2 records? I thought that it should have only one record with the Old/New values. Thanks.

• LLBLGenProDataSource : cannot see updates values of newly inserted item from a FormView

  After performing a FormView.InsertItem, I am unable to read the new values from the bound object within the LLBLGenProDataSource that the FormView is bound to. I have tracing turned on, I can see the insert happen, and the data does make it into the database, yet when I examine the contents of LLBLGenProDataSource.EntityCollection(0) (there is only one item in the collection) I do not see the values from the FormView.....yet, they are somehow being inserted into the database. That is, first they send you a program to run to grab your HWID, you tell them your HWID, they store it in a database, then they send you the actual program. If your HWID isn't in the database, the program won't run. So what is Hardware-ID, and how is it generated? Why is it that my HWID is different depending on the programmer that sends me a HWID-grabber?

  I have written up a python script that allows a user to input a message, his email and the time and they would like the email sent. This is all stored in a mysql database. However, how do I get the script to execute on the said time and date? will it require a cron job? I mean say at 2:15 on april 20th, the script will search the database for all times of 2:15, and send out those emails. But what about for emails at 2:16? I am using a shared hosting provided, so cant have a continously running script. Thanks

• Slow insert speed in Postgresql memory tablespace

  Hi, I have a requirement where I need to store the records at rate of 10,000 records/sec into a database (with indexing on a few fields). Number of columns in one record is 25. I am doing a batch insert of 100,000 records in one transaction block. To improve the insertion rate, I changed the tablespace from disk to RAM.With that I am able to achieve only 5,000 inserts per second. I have also done the following tuning in the postgres config: Indexes : no fsync : false logging : disabled Other information: - Tablespace : RAM - Number of columns in one row : 25 (mostly integers) - CPU : 4 core, 2.5 GHz - RAM : 48 GB I am wondering why a single insert query is taking around 0.2 msec on average when database is not writing anything on disk (as I am using RAM based tablespace). Is there something I am doing wrong? Help appreciated. Prashant

• TypeInitializationException When Getting an NHibernate Session

  I’ve run into what appears to be an NHibernate config problem. Basically, I ran up a simple proof of concept persistence integration test using NUnit, the test simply querys an Oracle database and successfully returns the last record received by the underlying table. However, when the assemblies are taken out of the NUnit test environment and deployed as they would be for an actual application build, my call for an NHibernate session results in a ‘TypeInitializationException’ whilst executing the code line: sessionFactory = New Configuration().Configure().BuildSessionFactory() The application is a vb.net console app running against an Oracle 9.2 database, using a ‘coding framework’ published on the web by Bill McCafferty entitled 'NHibernate Best Practices with ASP.NET' (pre S#harp Architecture).   At the moment I'm working through "Practical Common Lisp" from Peter Seibel. In the chapter "Practical: A Simple Database" (http://www.gigamonkeys.com/book/practical-a-simple-database.html) Seibel explains keyword parameters and the usage of a supplied-parameter with the following example: (defun foo (&key a (b 20) (c 30 c-p)) (list a b c c-p)) Results: (foo :a 1 :b 2 :c 3) ==> (1 2 3 T) (foo :c 3 :b 2 :a 1) ==> (1 2 3 T) (foo :a 1 :c 3) ==> (1 20 3 T) (foo) ==> (NIL 20 30 NIL) So if I use &key at the beginning of my parameter list, I have the possibility to use a list of 3 parameters name, default value and the third if the parameter as been supplied or not. Ok. But looking at the code in the above example: (list a b c c-p) How does the lisp interpreter know that c-p is my "supplied parameter"?

• Which internet scenario would be better?

  I currently have an 8mbps (down) / 512kbps (up) telephone ADSL solution. I must say the reliability is excellent, and up until now its been the fastest connection I could get because I don't live in a cable zone. The real speed of my connection is around 7mbps, but sometimes I manage to get the full 8mbps. I use my connection for work, so it needs to be at least 99% reliable. Recently I was told by a guy who lives up the road that he has a wireless connection with an external antenna and his speeds are 20mbps / 512kbps - he's also paying about 1/2 of what I pay for my wired telephone connection. My question is, is wireless internet good enough for a power user who uses his connection for work 8 hours a day, including VPNing into servers remotely. Besides this I also enjoy playing the odd network game, not a WoW freak, but sometimes I do pick up the odd MMORPG and at times do indulge in some semi heavy gaming sprees. Will this wireless latency drive me crazy and seem slow in comparison? Will it be reliable enough, I also live in an area that snows heavily in winter. I guess its a question of - should I go wireless or not. I've only had 1 wireless connection before and that was years ago using iBurst technology and I remember it was terrible for VPN, but I guess the technology might have been improved since then? What do you guys think?

• "The specified table does not exist" - for the administrator it does! Vista only issue

  Hello, I've got a weird bug occurring in a compact database on a Vista deployment machine. Basically the sdf file seem to be schizophrenic. The client application get the entitled error when running as a user but not when I use run as administrator. I don't see this problem on my XP development machine. I installed management studio onto the deployment machine and opened two versions of the application, one as user and one as administrator. When I query: SELECT TABLE_NAME FROM INFORMATION_SCHEMA.TABLES I see 21 tables on the one and 26 on the other, and the administrator is seeing less tables. It turns out that the user version, with 26 rows, is a previous incarnation of this database. Any ideas on why this is happening?

• Brick-level backup and restore with exchange 2007

  In the company I'm working for, we use exchange 2007 and backup it using netbackup. The backup is a daily complete backup of the information store and the direct corollary of this is that restores are hell. We need to restore the entire information store (over 80 gb), somehow merge it back with the original store, which causes problems. Alternatively, we tried using QUEST software to emulate exchange and restore mails from the emulation. However, this proved unreliable. The main problem with this entire situation is that we have to restore the whole information store and walk it through the restore process manually, and its quite absurd to be forced spend more than a day restoring even one erased email. (we have erased mail retention, but sometimes we need to restore older mail). in comparison, back in the day of XCH2003 and backupexec 12, we had complete brick level backup and restore at the push of a button. I've spoken to one of our chief sysadmins who claimed that the official response from microsoft to this issue was - "sorry guys, no brick level backup in XCH2007" which sounds ridiculous to me. Can someone shed some light on the situation? How do you backup your exchange2007 stores? Can you restore a single email quickly? A mailbox, perhaps?
