• Why does ATI 5570 HD video card driver installation cause Windows 7 To Blue Screen?

  This one is for the hive mind. I have a brand new Dell Optiplex 760 workstation with 4 gigabytes of RAM running Windows 7 Professional (32bit). This is a new box with nothing installed other than what was provided for directly by Dell. I installed a Saphire ATI PCI Express 5570 HD. Upon trying to install the 10.4 Catalyst drivers the system will blue screen. It blue screens during the hardware detection phase of the installation process. I have already performed the following trouble shooting steps: Changed system RAM Installed only 2 gigabytes of RAM Installed different versions of Catalyst drivers (10.4 - 9.12) Tried to install video only component of driver (vs entire Catalyst suite) Made sure Windows 7 was fully updated Flashed mother board BIOS to current version Removed and re-seated video card Contacted ATI Support (We all know how this went......) Verified supply outputting properly The blue screen error (via Windows BugCheck entry in event log) is a 0x000000CA and refers to a plug and play error most likely caused by a bad driver. The problem is that the driver installation process never gets far enough to actually install a driver. The resolution center in Windows provides a solution of installing the 10.4 Catalyst driver to resolve issue (which fails). Looking for some alternate views to resolve.

• can't access SATA card config screen on boot, nor access the disks

  We've just upgraded our file server using an ASUS P6T WS Pro board, running FreeBSD-RELEASE 8.2 and using zfs to manage 12 WD20EARS disks. Since our 3ware card has been giving us trouble we started using the six on-board SATA connectors and got a SuperMicro USAS2-L8i to provide eight more ports. Mechanically, the card is an awkward fit but electrically it all seems ok. Upon boot, the LSI controller shows up and states that pressing ctrl-c will bring up the LSI Config Utility. When doing that, the message changes to state that the utility will be started after initialization, however that never happens. There does seem to be an error message that's only displayed too briefly to read and seems to be about PCI and "not enough space". (That message is pushed off by a hardware summary and I've found no way to scroll back at this point.) The disks do not show up in any recognizable ways after booting, either. I found a hint in another discussion to check the address mapping on either the card or the motherboard BIOS, but have found no way to do that. So what I tried on a hunch is to disable everything that's on-board, including network adapters, Firewire controller and SATA. In fact, after doing that, I can successfully launch the LSI Config Utility. As far as I can tell, all looks well in there, and when booting in that configuration it also displays a list of the disks connected to it, which looks just fine as well. Only problem now is that I can't boot that way, because I need the on-board SATA controller and network adapters. As soon as I re-enable any of them I'm back to square one. That discussion I mentioned about mapping addresses said to try D000, then D7FF, then DFFF, in order. The LSI Config Utility shows the card address as D000 but offers no way of changing it. Any tips or insights would be appreciated.

• Fedora 9 not reconizing hard drive

  I am installing Fedora 9 to a PC (specifications at the bottom) and have had a lot of trouble with it recognising the hard drive. To get the Fedora installer to recognize it in the first place I had to pass "ata_generic.all_generic_ide=1 pci=nomsi" to the kernel, after which it installed OK. However, now when I boot the installed OS, I get a "could not find filesystem '/dev/root'" error. I tried passing the same arguments to the kernel at boot as I did when installing but to no avail. I have tried using the default LVM layout and defining manual ones but it made no difference. There is no option in the BIOS to enable AHCI or anything like that, in fact the BIOS is very limited in most respects. I can get into the system by using the installation CD in rescue mode (with those extra kernal parameters) but I'm not sure what to do once in there... Unfortunately using a more recent version of Fedora or even another Linux distribution altogether isn't an option becuase of outside constraints - which is annoying since I know for a fact Ubuntu works fine on this setup. I have not been using Linux that long, so treat me like an idiot - I am one. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks! • What parts should I get for an ASRock x58 Extreme motherboard

  I just received an ASRock x58 Extreme motherboard, for my post on this question. It was a 2009 Tom's Hardware recommended buy. It is a Core i7 motherboard, with an X58 Express Chipset. It uses DDR3 RAM. What I want to know is, what parts should I get to finish it off. I'm looking for some good bargains, because of a lack of funds. The most taxing game I will probably play on it is OpenTTD. The only parts I currently have that are compatible: A Dynex 400W power supply. It appears to be an ATX 2.1 power supply, with the addition of a -5 rail. Apparently designed to be compatible with most ATX-style motherboards. Several PCI add-in cards. Mostly 10/100 Network cards Some sound cards Some video cards with a VGA connector Plenty of PATA drives. 8 GB - 80 GB Hard-drives A dozen or-so CD-ROM drives, only a handful of them are CD-RW drives. One DVD-ROM drive I have one LCD, with a 15 pin VGA connector, which I salvaged from the dump. The only thing wrong with it was some dead capacitors. It also has a stuck pixel.

• Automatically install driver on headless WHSv1 system

  I have one of the HP Mediasmart Windows Home Server v1 boxes. It's network port appears to have died a few days ago but the system is not giving any other sign of failure: No activity lights activate on either side of the cable when connected to my gigabit switch; when connected to one of my routers 100 megabit ports the lights turn on but it remains unreachable over the network and my router never lists it as among DHCP clients. I bought a USB-ethernet adapter to temporarily get it back online; but the adapter needs a driver to work which I can't install because the system is headless by design (no video out, no PCI/PCIe slots) with admin access only available via the WHS client or remote desktop. Both of those options require network connectivity and are consequently unavailable. I tried copying the drivers to a flash drive; but Windows either didn't look there or none of the drivers provided were suitable (Win8, Win7, or combined XP and Vista). I've been told that a USB WiFi adapter would have the same driver problem.

  Can anyone help with me configure my dual-screen monitors for rotation? I have xrandr 1.1. Have tried various approaches, nothing takes. I can't even get the xrandr options to show up in KDE's Display control panel. • When gaming computer freezes with a blank screen and a buzzing sound

  I have a problem with random freezes when playing games. Sometimes it's fine for hours, other times it dosn't last even one. I tried googling around and I found recomendations to update my graphics drivers and to test for overheating. The graphics drivers haven't helped worked and Furmark created a consistant heat higher than I get during a crash. I even tried running a game using the Linux dual boot and WINE, that crashed too. Here are the tempreture logs leading up to the latest crash. The GPU dosn't hit 80, and I've hit 90 with no crash on firmark. In my windowsXP guest I tried to connect to the FTP server on my host machine(which used to work well) but it didn't work. I tried to ping my host machine, but it didn't work either. • USB mouse disconnecting and reconnecting in windows and linux

  I have a problem similar to what is described at "Why is my USB mouse disconnecting and reconnecting randomly and often?" except is is happening in both Windows 7 and Linux (Ubuntu 12/04TLS, fully patched), multiple mice, multiple OSs. It stops responding to input for about 3-5 seconds, then starts responding again. It's more frequent and lasts longer when running games (TF2, L4D, Dishonored, Borderlands 2, and more), but happens when just running the OS as well. I was hoping it was the motherboard so I bought a USB 2.0 PCI card to try that, but it's still happening. I've stripped it down to just the keyboard and mouse (different keyboard too just in case the keyboard was the problem), but it's still happening. All the hardware (mice and keyboards) work fine on other computers. I have literally pulled the mouse and keyboard out and plugged them into another computer (laptop) and re-joined the online game and had no problem with the keyboard and mouse combo that just failed on my gaming rig. Please no driver / Windows or Linux only suggestions, as that wouldn't effect both OSs. edit: known good mice I've brought home are now going bad. I suspect the hardware is messed up (voltage?) and has been frying the mice.

• Basic multicast network performance problems

  I've been using mpong from 29west's mtools package to get some basic idea of multicast latency across various Cisco switches: 1Gb 2960G, 10Gb 4900M and 10Gb Nexus N5548P. The 1Gb is just for comparison. I have the following results for ~400 runs of mpong on each switch (sending 65536 "ping"-like messages to a receiver which then sends back -- all over multicast). Numbers are latencies measured in microseconds. Switch Average StdDev Min Max 2960 (1Gb) 109.68463 0.092816 109.4328 109.9464 4900M (10Gb) 705.52359 1.607976 703.7693 722.1514 NX 5548(10Gb) 58.563774 0.328242 57.77603 59.32207 The result for 4900M is very surprising. I've tried unicast ping and I see the 4900 has ~10us higher latency than the N5548P (average 73us vs 64us). Iperf (with no attempt to tune it) shows both 10Gb switches give me 9.4Gbps line speed. The two machines are connected to the same switch and we're not doing any multicast routing. OS is RHEL 6. 10Gb NICs are HP 10GbE PCI-E G2 Dual-port NICs (I believe they are rebranded Mellanox cards). The 4900 switch is used in a project with tight access control so I'm waiting for approval before I can access it and check the config. The other two I have full access to configure. I've looked at the Cisco document[2] detailing differences between NX-OS and IOS w.r.t multicast so I've got some ideas to try out but this isn't an area where I have much expertise.   First some background information on the server: Host OS: Debian Linux Squeeze + qemu-kvm version 1.0+dfsg-8~bpo60+1 Guest OS: Debian Linux Squeeze I use qemu-kvm via libvirt. I have set up 9p VirtFS with the following in Guest's XML config: <filesystem type='mount' accessmode='passthrough'> <source dir='/srv/www'/> <target dir='wwwdata'/> <address type='pci' domain='0x0000' bus='0x00' slot='0x06' function='0x0'/> </filesystem> That is, I want to share /srv/www to the guest OS using mount tag wwwdata. When I try to mount the VirtFS share from the guest, I get an error message: root@server:~# mount -t 9p -o trans=virtio,version=9p2000.L2 wwwdata /srv/www/ mount: wwwdata: can't read superblock I also tried virtfs target dir/mount_tag www at first. I got the same error message. However, I was able to mount the VirtFS share using mount tag www1111, or www1 or similar. Some more notes on this one. dmesg doesn't show anything useful either in guest or the host. • Frame Accurate Browser Launchable Video Player ... ?

  I have a requirement where I need to enable playback (full screen) of a h.264 MPEG4 (thanks for the correction!) video from a local network, launchable from a browser link on a Windows workstation, and be frame accurate. By frame accurate I mean that I need to be able to scrub through the video in the same way you would with a vtr, stop at a frame, and then move backwards and forwards frame by frame (it is for a very specific compliance requirement where have to be able to check every frame if there is something that is potentially against broadcasting guidelines). The application itself is used to capture notes while viewing the material, so the end model is for a dual monitor workstation, with a web form in one, the video playing full screen in the second (no issue launching the video and manually having to move it to the second screen), and then the user controls the video via keyboard shortcuts or a jog shuttle. I have looked at QT, but the java bindings seem to be dead or nearly so, flash isn't frame accurate, VLC given its streaming heritage seems to be only able to move forward by a frame and not backwards, and all I have left are commercial offerings that in my experience are difficult and expensive to change. Any ideas of where I should look or alternative options? Any advice appreciated!

  I've just bought a second monitor for my PC which happens to be a pivot monitor. I've already read lots of forums related to my problem but haven't come across a solution - I have the same symptoms as dozens of posts but no matter whatever I try it just doesn't work. I've already changed the xorg.conf file and added in the device section just under Driver "nvidia" the following for my second monitor: Option "RandRRotation" "on" When I save and reboot I try to rotate my screen with the nvidia X server settings by choosing the second monitor and clicking either "left" or "right" for the rotation. It immediately exits the nvidia settings window and does nothing. I tried within the terminal by typing: xrandr -o right I get the following error: X Error of failed request: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes) Major opcode of failed request: 154 (RANDR) Minor opcode of failed request: 2 (RRSetScreenConfig) Serial number of failed request: 14 Current serial number in output stream: 14 I actually manage to rotate it with Option "Rotate" "CCW" instead of "RandRRotation". The problem with this solution is that you get the second monitor in the right position, but any window you open on that screen is practically unchangeable. You can't change the size nor move it, making it useless for reading PDFs, which is the main reason why I bought this second screen to help me write my thesis.   I get a blue screen of death in my windows 98 machine every time I boot it. I can't reach to my desktop. The error is like this: A fatal exception 0E occured at 0028:C003CC2F in VxD IOS(01) + 0000156B This was called from 0028:C0082E60 in VxD VKD(01) + 000001D0 I have to then give it a three finger salute to restart the system. There is no other way to shut down the system at this point except pressing the CPU power button. What could be the problem? So, instead of just telling those that ask what to buy that it's not allowed, let's tell them how to figure out what they need. When looking forward to build a computer, how do I know what to buy? How do I find out if a given CPU will be enough for a certain game or application that I want to run? How do I find out if a given graphics card will be enough for a certain game or application? What is important when looking at motherboards? How much memory do I need? How do I know how much wattage I need for a power supply? What size case do I need? What relevant standards do I need to read up on and be aware of? PCI, PCIe, SATA, USB 2.0, USB 3.0, etc... What "gotchas" do I need to be on the lookout for? • Media Center - TV constantly pauses 1/2 second then plays 1 second

  I have a problem watching TV in Media Center. The TV constantly pauses 1/2 second then plays 1 second, pauses 1/2 second, plays 1 second - it is constant and does not vary. I know the problem is Media Center because I can use Pinnacle's TVCenterPro and there is no skipping/pausing. I was using cable, and switched to DirecTV (satellite). Trying to do "Set up TV signal" in Media Center seems to be what broke it. I get an error "IR Hardware not detected." I can use the remote to "try again" - so the IR hardware works fine (Media Center's remote/sensor). I tried plugging the IR Blaster into both ports, and I tried a different USB port for the IR receiver. I can't complete the setup. Media Center was playing it okay before I tried to run setup. (I ran setup to try to do recording with Media Center.) Pinnacle PCTV 800i HD PCI card, ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics, Windows XP SP3 Media Center Edition, AMD Athlon Dual Core 2.5 GHz, 1.75 GB RAM.

• None of usb-controllers are working after a crash

  So I have a GA-p35-DS4 mboard with a Q6600, running windows7-x64. After a random crash with a bluescreen (not caused by anything particular as I recall), none of the usb-controllers are working. (And none of the devices connected to those usb ports). All the controllers are showed up in the device manager, but every one has a warning-icon (as they are not functioning properly). The windows identifies them correctly, it shows exactly the model of each controller, and it says that the driver is installed. Now, when I try to reinstall the driver (Update driver menu item in the device manager), it tries to find it, finds the driver, but quits saying that the driver was found but could not be installed. Additionally, it displays "This operation requires an interactive window station", whatever that means... Now get this, the same thing happens with a new pci-usb controller card! It is found (actually each time the machine starts, it is found as new hardware), but trying to install drivers leads nowhere, I am getting the same message about an interactive window station. (tried to install drivers from the acoompanying CD) I have tried deleting those devices from device manager and let windows find them again, but that leads to same results. None of the ports on this extension card work either. This should not be a hardware problem, a usb keyboard connected to the builtin usb controller works in bios, and even in another OS running the same computer (old xp installation) What to do? Will I have to reinstall? Can deleting infcache.1 help? Is there some way to let windows remove all old drivers and try to find all hardware again, this time only looking for drivers on a windows install disk or something?

• SATA HDD stuttering on reads (LED on)

  I hope I can get some new ideas to solve the issue. What I have: AMD Phenom II X4 905e Box, Sockel AM3 Gigabyte GA-MA790XTA-UD4, AMD 790X, AM3 ATX WD Caviar GreenPower 1,5TB SATA II 4GB Kit OCZ DDR3 PC3-10666 Platinum Low-Voltage CL7 HIS HD 4670 iSilence4 DDR3 1024MB Native HDMI Dual-DVI, PCI-Express Behavior: Everything works normally excepting the HDD accesses. The drive seems to get stuck in reading data (LED drive by Mainboard is on for a while) then recovers and goes on. There is a delay of more than 30s sometimes. Often it is a matter of 5-10s. This does not seem related to the workload of the disk. What I tried so far: Use different SATA port: I switched from the SATA3 to SATA2 then the SATA driven by the CPU, no difference. Turned AHCI off, drove the SATA in IDE mode, same behavior, now I felt like the HDD has problems Deactivated energy saving settings (BeQuiet, ...), disabled 3 CPUs (msconfig) supposing some race condition or trouble with changing freqs, same trouble With Windows7 Professional 64Bit, I installed the hotfix http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb%3Ben-us%3B976418&x=8&y=9 with no success. The problem description matches what I experienced, so I felt lucky but was quite in a sad mood after being deceived. Burned the DLG 5.04f DataLifeGuard CD from WD to check the drive. All tests passed, to my surprise! Installed an Ubuntu on the same drive i386 flavour. Drive still in IDE mode, exactly the same behavior. So the OS does not matter. Using another HDD drive Does someone have other hints or a similar issue? Maybe it is neither the HDD nor the Mainboard/BIOS?

• Subscription Based Billing

  Hello All, I'm putting together a small start up company which will be set up with a subscription based billing model. The bill will go to customers on either a monthly or quarterly basis depending on the end user's preference. My question is two parted: I'm new to online billing and I'm only really aware of Pay Pal when it comes to third party bill payment, but this seems more like a check out system. I'm sure there are better alternatives than PayPal for third party billing processors (I have tried Googling for them, but I'm having trouble finding exactly what I'm looking for). What options (companies) are available for third party payment processing and what types of experiences (good or bad) have you had with them? We would like to give our customers the ability to set up recurring payments. I'd rather not store a customer's credit card number on our database as I imagine there are a plethora of compliance guidelines around this. Is there a third party solution for recurring payment processing? On a side note, this is not necessarily a code related question and is more business focused. I wasn't sure if there was a better route for posting this question, and please commont or modify this if there is another route I should take. Thanks!!

Why it's happening, but still I can not resolve this issue. Any ideas on what is happening here?

• Static noise in headphones

  I have a Asus P6T based system. I was using the on-board sound (plugging in Logitech X-230 2.1 analog speakers in the green "front speakers" 3.5mm analog output, then plugging in my headphones in that). I was quite happy with the sound quality (didn't hear any static noise if volume was turned down to my normal listening level). Then about a week ago I started having terrible static noise from the left channel, and no normal audio on that left channel. Right channel had more static noise than usual but did have a bit of sound. I tried using the AC'97 in front of my case but that seemed to have no signal. I decided my on-board sound card has gone bad and bought an internal sound card to replace it (Startech 7.1Ch PCI). This fixed the "no sound from left channel problem", but I had much more audible static noise. I decided the card was low quality and/or it had interference from all the other things happening inside the computer case, and bought a Sweex SC016 external USB sound card. But even with that I have static noise in headphones. Positioning the USB sound card differently doesn't seem to help. Trying the other analog outputs (e.g., surround) doesn't help. The static noise in all cases is proportional to the volume. I have tried different headphones, but the situation is situation though perhaps the flavour of the static noise changes slightly. So what are my options? a) Get another, more expensive, external USB sound card hoping the quality will improve? b) Get another, more expensive, internal sound card (PCIe 1x perhaps) hoping the quality will improve? c) Get a dedicated DAC box? d) Get some Hi-Fi earphones? Suggestions? tl;dr - Two different sound cards both still have static noise in headphones.

• No signal on monitor after plug it to a linux box

  I use my old computer as an NAS, so I remove the monitor after I installed linux on it (disconnect vga cable). I use ssh to control the machine and it works fine. Until some day, after kernel/softare upgrade or messing up some configs, I cannot connect to it through ssh, then I have to plug the monitor back, but the monitor says "No input signal". So I have to restart the computer WITH the monitor connected, and the monitor's back! I think the computer/linux kernel doesn't detect the monitor plug-in event. So how can I start my linux box without a monitor, but when it goes wrong I can still plug my monitor (vga) back and use the console. Edit: just one pci-e video card, has dvi, vga, tv/out (s-video) Edit2: Xorg is not running. I just need the console (CTRL+ALT+F1). The problem is, if the machine booted without a monitor connected, it won't give me a pseudo terminal after I attach the vga cable while it's running. Clearly the monitor is not auto detected as usb device. I'm wondering how to let the monitor auto detected.

• How to test an application for correct encoding (e.g. UTF-8)

  Encoding issues are among the one topic that have bitten me most often during development. Every platform insists on its own encoding, most likely some non-UTF-8 defaults are in the game. (I'm usually working on Linux, defaulting to UTF-8, my colleagues mostly work on german Windows, defaulting to ISO-8859-1 or some similar windows codepage) I believe, that UTF-8 is a suitable standard for developing an i18nable application. However, in my experience encoding bugs are usually discovered late (even though I'm located in Germany and we have some special characters that along with ISO-8859-1 provide some detectable differences). I believe that those developers with a completely non-ASCII character set (or those that know a language that uses such a character set) are getting a head start in providing test data. But there must be a way to ease this for the rest of us as well. What [technique|tool|incentive] are people here using? How do you get your co-developers to care for these issues? How do you test for compliance? Are those tests conducted manually or automatically? Adding one possible answer upfront: I've recently discovered fliptitle.com (they are providing an easy way to get weird characters written "u?op ?pisdn" *) and I'm planning on using them to provide easily verifiable UTF-8 character strings (as most of the characters used there are at some weird binary encoding position) but there surely must be more systematic tests, patterns or techniques for ensuring UTF-8 compatibility/usage. Note: Even though there's an accepted answer, I'd like to know of more techniques and patterns if there are some. Please add more answers if you have more ideas. And it has not been easy choosing only one answer for acceptance. I've chosen the regexp answer for the least expected angle to tackle the problem although there would be reasons to choose other answers as well. Too bad only one answer can be accepted.
