  I'm trying to use fread/ifstream to read the first 2 bytes of a .csv with BOM info. But following code always skips the first two bytes (which are 'FF FE'): ifstream is; is.open (fn, ios::binary ); char buf[2]; is.read(buf, 2); is.close(); using FILE*/fread does no better.

  I'm reading through a tutorial on using voice commands to control applications and, in an example of controlling rhythmbox, it suggests commands such as the following can be executed: rhythmbox-client --play rhythmbox-client --pause Why does this not simply open a new instance of the program, and how can I emulate the functionality in my own programs? For example, how could I pass a string to a particular instance of a program? Thanks

• GCC: Compile to assembly with clarified correspondence to code?

  When you break into the debugger in VS and open the disassembly window, each assembly fragment is displayed below it's corresponding code section (more or less). GCC with -S outputs only the stripped down assembly. Is there an option in GCC to show some correspondence to the original code? Source code is C++.
