  • C#: Installing a new version over old version

    - by sbenderli
    I have a deployment project which will not let me install over an older version. The msi file says to uninstall the program first from Add/Remove programs. This is not a good user experience. How can I do it so that the installer will simply remove the software first and then install the new version?

  • Swing: does DefaultBoundedRangeModel coalesce multiple events?

    - by Jason S
    I have a JProgressBar displaying a BoundedRangeModel which is extremely fine grained and I was concerned that updating it too often would slow down my computer. So I wrote a quick test program (see below) which has a 10Hz timer but each timer tick makes 10,000 calls to microtick() which in turn increments the BoundedRangeModel. Yet it seems to play nicely with a JProgressBar; my CPU is not working hard to run the program. How does JProgressBar or DefaultBoundedRangeModel do this? They seem to be smart about how much work it does to update the JProgressBar, so that as a user I don't have to worry about updating the BoundedRangeModel's value. package com.example.test.gui; import java.awt.event.ActionEvent; import java.awt.event.ActionListener; import javax.swing.BoundedRangeModel; import javax.swing.DefaultBoundedRangeModel; import javax.swing.JFrame; import javax.swing.JPanel; import javax.swing.JProgressBar; import javax.swing.Timer; public class BoundedRangeModelTest1 extends JFrame { final private BoundedRangeModel brm = new DefaultBoundedRangeModel(); final private Timer timer = new Timer(100, new ActionListener() { @Override public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent arg0) { tick(); } }); public BoundedRangeModelTest1(String title) { super(title); JPanel p = new JPanel(); p.add(new JProgressBar(this.brm)); getContentPane().add(p); this.brm.setMaximum(1000000); this.brm.setMinimum(0); this.brm.setValue(0); } protected void tick() { for (int i = 0; i < 10000; ++i) { microtick(); } } private void microtick() { this.brm.setValue(this.brm.getValue()+1); } public void start() { this.timer.start(); } static public void main(String[] args) { BoundedRangeModelTest1 f = new BoundedRangeModelTest1("BoundedRangeModelTest1"); f.pack(); f.setVisible(true); f.setDefaultCloseOperation(EXIT_ON_CLOSE); f.start(); } }

  • Is it any loose coupling mechanism in Objective-C + Cocoa like C# delegates or C++Qt signals+slots?

    - by Eye of Hell
    Hello. For a large programs, the standard way to chalenge a complexity is to divide a program code into small objects. Most of the actual programming languages offer this functionality via classes, so is Objective-C. But after source code is separated into small object, the second challenge is to somehow connect them with each over. Standard approaches, supported by most languages are compositon (one object is a member field of another), inheritance, templates (generics) and callbacks. More cryptic techniques include method-level delagates (C#) and signals+slots (C++Qt). I like the delegates / signals idea, since while connecting two objects i can connect individual methods with each over, without objects knowing anything of each over. For C#, it will look like this: var object1 = new CObject1(); var object2 = new CObject2(); object1.SomethingHappened += object2.HandleSomething; In this code, is object1 calls it's SomethingHappened delegate (like a normal method call) the HandleSomething method of object2 will be called. For C++Qt, it will look like this: var object1 = new CObject1(); var object2 = new CObject2(); connect( object1, SIGNAL(SomethingHappened()), object2, SLOT(HandleSomething()) ); The result will be exactly the same. This technique has some advantages and disadvantages, but generally i like it more than interfaces since if program code base grows i can change connections and add new ones without creating tons of interfaces. After examination of Objective-C i havn't found any way to use this technique i like :(. It seems that Objective-C supports message passing perfectly well, but it requres for object1 to have a pointer to object2 in order to pass it a message. If some object needs to be connected to lots of other objects, in Objective-C i will be forced to give him pointers to each of the objects it must be connected. So, the question :). Is it any approach in Objective-C programming that will closely resemble delegate / signal+slot types of connection, not a 'give first object an entire pointer to second object so it can pass a message to it'. Method-level connections are a bit more preferable to me than object-level connection ^_^.

  • I want to compile a batch file into an exe using c++, i can get through parsing the batch file and w

    - by Nareshkumar Rao
    Ok, here's the thing, I am creating an application in DevC++ that will read in a batch file. then, one by one parsing it using: system(getline(myfile,line)); After setting everything up, I save the newly created file as "main.cpp". The problem is, I want to compile it into an exe, from my program, for the end user. So basically, I'm asking whether I can compile a C++ file from a C++ Exe..

  • Aquaterm: titles and axis labels getting cut off

    - by VL3East
    I'm using aquaterm 1.0.1 through octave and gnuplot - on my mac - to generate printable plots. When aquaterm generates my plots, it has a habit of cutting off or cropping all of the titles and axis labels. Is there another imaging program that works with octave that won't have this problem? Or are there other fixes I haven't thought of?

  • Prevent Application Shutdown iPhone

    - by Paul Alexander
    I'm building a little dialing program for my kids so that only 4 "safe" numbers are available for them to dial. I'd like to start the app, hand them the phone and have the app be the only thing running until they come back home. Is there a way to keep the application running and prevent the iPhone from shutting down the app?

  • Detect/Redirect core dumps (when a software crashes) on Windows

    - by ereOn
    Hi, For my work, I need to create a service that will detect an abnormal program termination and, instead of displaying a message to the user (default behavior), send the generated core dump to a remote server. I'm pretty sure this can be done, but I have absolutely no clue on where to start. Is there any API/registry settings for this ? Thank you.

  • Go - Raise an exception

    - by nevalu
    I would want to raise an exception as it's made in Python or Java --to finish the program with an error message--. An error message could be returned to a parent function: func readFile(filename string) (content string, err os.Error) { content, err := ioutil.ReadFile(filename) if err != nil { return "", os.ErrorString("read " + filename + ": " + err) } return string(content), nil } but I want that it can be finished when the error is found. Would be correct the next one? func readFile(filename string) (content string) { content, err := ioutil.ReadFile(filename) defer func() { if err != nil { panic(err) } }() return string(content) }

  • Using a Hash table

    - by Maria Attard
    I have 2 lists in my program one that store objects of type student and another one which stores objects of type marks. I have 3 methods one that inputs the details of the students, one that inputs the marks and one to view student details and their marks. My question is how I can use a hash table to get the Id of a student and then use it to input the marks and then how to retrieve both the student details and their marks altogether. Please help me if you can.

  • How to make OSX application that just runs opens some file type and runs arbitrary Ruby code?

    - by taw
    It's trivial to make a program executable from shell - just put #!/usr/bin/ruby on top, chmod +x it and done. Unfortunately OSX won't let me associate file type with such scripts - it requires its .apps instead. This sort of distinction doesn't seem to exist on other operating systems. What's the simplest way of making such .app, which would merely execute some arbitrary Ruby code?

  • R segfault when running via Rpy on linux

    - by Zhang18
    I'm running R via Rpy on a redhat linux distribution. Periodically I'll encounter this error message: *** caught segfault *** address (nil), cause 'unknown' And the entire program dies right there. It usually occurs when I run a lot of regression r.lm(). But by simply running the identical code again, the problem may or may not go away (so not always reproduceable). Does anyone know what might be causing this, and/or how I can prevent it from happening?

  • Postgres turn on log_statement programmatically

    - by rwallace
    I want to turn on logging of all SQL statements that modify the database. I could get that on my own machine by setting the log_statement flag in the configuration file, but it needs to be enabled on the user's machine. How do you enable it from program code? (I'm using Python with psycopg2 if it matters.)
